Woke up with hearing gone in one ear on a Saturday. Saw an ENT on Monday, and was on the oral steroids that night. After a week of no improvement, I moved to the injections. 4 injections over the course of 2 weeks didn’t result in any further improvement. I now have the Oticon Ponto 5 SuperPower and couldn’t be happier.

I have had this and the way I was treated is exactly what you described re: misdiagnosed. It’s been 3 years. I plan to talk to my ENT about cochlear implants. I have CROS hearing aid (I use Signia) and it’s fine but I’m scared of losing hearing in the other ear and then where would be. That’s my biggest concern with just using the hearing aid for the rest of my life.
My condition was due to a viral infection. I went though all the stages of grief, like you described. I’ve come to acceptance but I got an ear infection in the other ear recently and freaked out so much, I need to know if a cochlear implant might make more sense for me long term. Now because I knew what intervention may have helped with the original issue, I knew what to ask for at the ER with the latest infectionand it worked but it was still scary.

I've had repeated surgeries in my left ear for Cholesteatoma and perf. Tymp. membrane. For years afterwards my right ear was my 'normal' hearing ear. Unfortunately, I'm one of the rare few people that then had multiple episodes of SSNHL in the same ear (right ear) spread out over a few years. Took steroids twice which helped recover significant hearing though not a 100%. Eventually lost further hearing and was then diagnosed with Meniere's disease as well. Eventually got a BAHA placed on left side to treat the hearing loss. A CROS or BiCROS solution wasn't recommended for me because due to repeated infections I was advised to keep the ear canal open and aired out. I'm glad I was fortunate enough to get the BAHA as its been a game changer for me. I just wanted to point out that you missed out on stating that abutment type BAHAs aren't the only option. I myself have the Cochlear OSIA device which is a magnetic solution and doesn't require an abutment. That has the added advantage of being removable and less of a risk of infection at the site of what would otherwise be the abutment. For anyone struggling with a hearing loss, the point is, ultimately, don't lose hope. There's almost always some solution or the other out there for any type of hearing loss.
I have an appt with an audiologist you recommended in San Diego today for hearing aids. Totally deaf in one ear post acoustic neuroma surgery 20 years ago. Now all of a sudden my good ear is funky. I was treated with azithromycin, prednisone and steroids injected into my ear, but my ear is still weird. Low frequency sounds are distorted. ENT says it’s Menieres. Thank you for all your information on hearing aides. I feel like I can make an informed decision at this point.
Happened to me about two years ago. The cause was unknown. I was put on oral Prednisone within the 72 hrs timeframe. I recovered the volume but not the clarity. Subsequently received three intratympanic injections which didn't help much. I was initially told hearing aids would be useless. A second opinion suggested trying them. I'm glad I did. They're not a cure but I'd be far worse off than if I didn't have them.

@@vladislavroytapel2830 Mild Tinnitus, nothing I can't handle. The distortion resulting from the cochlear damage is a far bigger issue, though still manageable.
I got severe high frequency hearing loss suddenly about 1 year ago. Likely caused by virus in vasculature that makes way to cochlea. I did oral and and intratympanic steroid injections with zero improvement. ENT told me hearing aids would not help - completely untrue. Found an audiologist who got me a hearing aid and that has been a life changer.

I didn’t realize how often single sided deafness happens yearly. I do love my Phonak Lumity L50 RT’s even on a bad day when my directionality is terrible and it takes a few seconds to get up to speed in a conversation. I am looking forward to exploring additional Phonak devices for complicated listening situations. It’s good to know how important early treatment is for SSD and that there are solutions should he hearing not return in the affected ear.

I have been suffering from SSHL (not Deafness) for nearly 10 years, and always on the look out for the right practical solution.
How does the Lumity CROS set-up work in background noise? (i.e. noisy bar, restaurants, simultaneous group discussions etc.).
Usuallly in such situations it's tough to hear & keeping up with conversations, even when the conversations are on my perfectly hearing side. How will the CROS input overcome this background noise? Does the Lumity CROS set-up auto-adjust the volume level of sound signal into good side to overcome the background noise naturally entering the good ear, whilst also taking into account conversations occurring on the good side? Thanks.

Dr. Cliff - is there a certain amount of time after SSHL that a person should wait before getting a hearing aid? I ask because I am 2 months in but still being treated with HBOT and am still gaining improvement. I don’t know if there are any studies that say how long after healing stops. Would be cool if you could do another video on SSHL and most recent treatment options. 😀
My left ear is affected with SSHL profound 90db loss. My right ear is exceptionally good. Is there a high possibility SSHL will occur in my right ear also? I have autoimmune hashimotos disease already.

Mr. Clif, I have a question out of curiosity, If one ear is completely healthy and the other ear is completely deaf. Do people use a hearing aid with Cross in that situation?

Does the Cochlear OSIA implant help to get rid of the tinnitus? I had a sudden hearing loss of my right ear in October 2020. Since that time I had issues with my balance and tinnitus in my right ear only. About 18 months ago up to now I feel a blockage in my left ear (good ear) and also I hear clicking sound on my left ear, when chew. I had been seeing three ENT in Houston Area, they couldn’t find anything wrong on my left ear. Would you kind to give some advice who should I contact? Thanks a new video.
Don't hope for the doctor to answer your question so keep asking around your area! Atleast thats what i would do
I hit a deer at 70 mph on an interstate freeway. I was fine, except for sudden high frequency hearing loss in one ear due to the loud pop of the air bags. While the first doc I saw at urgent care understood that quick treatment with prednisone or shots in the middle ear might be helpful, she handed me off to an emergency room doc who didn't and would do nothing. I asked for prednisone. He said, "Why would that help?" Ugh. He handed me off to an ENT doc who scheduled a hearing test, where they also understood the potential usefulness of quick treatment, but the ENT doc did not. Finally hunted around and found an ENT who understood and got me in for both oral and shots. But by then, it was about 9 days and neither worked. So why do so many doctors fail to understand the urgency of treatment for sudden hearing loss? ... Read (but too late for me) a study that suggests large oral doses of magnesium citrate also might be effective?
I'm sorry about your story. An airbag, if deployed, can cause acoustic trauma, in the worst case with lifelong consequences. To answer your question, it is a sad fact that otology has not evolved for decades. Concerning that branch one can speak of a standstill in medical research. Completely complacent, the medical profession believes that habituation and hearing aids are sufficient for the treatment hearing loss and Tinnitus. Patients are not taken seriously and sent home with statements like "learn to live with it". The level of medical development of ENT specialists has not evolved and there has been little progress. Some tests that are still used today are over 120 years old. Example: the Rinne test and the Weber test. It is primitive and backward! We know more about the moon than we know about human auditory system! In the 21st century, mind you! It can't work out this way. Human hearing is the most neglected organ in medical research. The institutes searching for a cure for tinnitus and hearing loss worldwide can be counted on both hands. At this rate, it will take decades, if not centuries, before a cure is found.
Wow so this is my problem. 😢 I got bit by a dog and two months later I lost my hearing. I went to my Dr and he gave me antibiotics then told my to try Flonase. I had to go out of town and when I got back I called the local ENT office. They got me right in and the ENT told me I had two weeks to save my hearing and my dr should of sent me to him especially since there was no fluid. I went through hell on high doses of prednisone that didn’t work. Then the ENT poked a hole in my eardrum and injected prednisone every couple weeks. I have some hearing but since the surgery to close the hole I’ve had tinnitus in that ear that drives me nuts. I have to sleep with an eye mask that has speakers so I can either listen to white noise or people talking just to get sleep. I’m just tired of the 24/7 ringing and sometimes clicking.
