Heartfelt thanks for posting this video, Rick. I’ve been so struggling with SSHL for the past 28 days. Sadly, I was misdiagnosed by my primary care physician...and by the time I got into my ENT, I had far surpassed the window where Prednisone will have a potential impact. Audiology tests confirm SSHL and 70% loss...and I’m scheduled for an MRI in two weeks. I’m in Upstate NY and feel like I’m in a U.K. health system. As a fellow believer I so appreciated your testimony. I’ve been praying and praying, have sought prayer at my church...and have faith that whatever happens, He works all things for our good. I will say...your comments regarding the early stages, it’s been an emotional roller coaster. The depressing feelings and anxiety = real...but I am 100% committed to overcoming this, whether that’s full and complete healing with a testimony of a miracle, or adjusting as necessary and giving thanks to God for the hearing I DO have. Same here. Mine started on May 10, 2021. Misdiagnosed and didn't get a chance to have hearing test after a month. Down to 38% on the left ear vs 95% on the right. I'm now on both steroid injection and prednisone, even trying acupuncture. After confirmation of SSHL, I'm very frustrated and depressed. Trying really hard to convince myself not to blame my PCP as a Christian. I've to accept that if God allow this to happen to me, He must have a good reason as I believe He loves me very very much. Thanks you guys sharing your testimony so I know I am not the only one!
Hey Dan. I had to really check to see if I had posted this. This is exactly how I am going through my SSHL and Leukoaraiosis diagnosis. I have Multiple churches praying for me earnestly. You certainly are a child of God with what you are saying. Either way, I'm good. God will eventually heal all his children one day. All lifes struggles will end and Satan will be bound. We win in the end. We do struggle at times and this SSHL and tinnitus is hard. I now have empathy with others that have this. My hearing presently is total loss in left ear BUT GOD!
This was a great witness. Thanks so much. I have delt with hearing loss my whole life. Very difficult when you are young. I am older now and can handle it much better. Anyone new to hearing loss please realize that it will be ok. I acknowledged this is the cross I have to carry in life that will be with me the rest of my life. That is ok. You can do it. Hi Rick, thanks for sharing your story. It's inspiring how you handled it in a positive way and how you're actually using it to help others who are on the same issue. I experienced SSNHL 10 days ago. Not being able to listen from one ear is far worse than it seems so I feel you. The first day I woke up hearing less in my right ear with a ringing noise that became worse during the day. I thought it might be wax and tried to individually clean my ear. However, I hoped it would get better the next day, but next morning I was completely deaf from that ear. Living in a farm in Argentina I drove 50 km to the nearest town where I found an ENT who checked my ear and ordered to do an audiogram which I did in the afternoon (36 hours since the incident started). She prescribed the max dose of corticosteroids which I started. Five days forward no improvement, I was still deaf in my right ear and wasc starting to get desperate. I started reading a lot and found some positive reviews using hyperbaric chamber oxygen therapy so I called one, made an appointment and started the next day I started the next day. From there on magic happened. The first session I heard a little pop in my ear for the first time. During the following sessions my hearing started improving significantly. I already had 4 sessions and I have already recovered 90% of my hearing loss. I still hear the ringing sometimes but it's less frequent and smoother. I wanted to share this because if someone is suffering from SSNHL hyperbaric chamber therapy is a great alternative. Cheers
Went through and prayed for all the comments as well as you Rick! I got SSNHL too and possibly getting a bout of another onset with it. Working with my ENT about it right now. Please pray for any lost hearing to return and for my tinnitus (ear ringing) to cease. The tinnitus is what really gets to me.
Hi Rick. It’s great you have adjusted to your new life. I recently was hit by it as well and I’m trying Prednisone now.. One thing that stroke me right away was to find out how many people out there are suffering the same or even worst then me. Like you I’m a spiritualist as well and do believe whatever happens to us either by accident or karma, it always has a purpose in our lives. When I look down at my challenges I’m still very healthy and I’m thankful for what I have. Suffering belongs to this world and my own privilege.. it belongs to all of us. I am going through the same story of hearing loss since Feb 28, 2021. I placed on Prednisone by the next day of the onset till the moment. I just watched your video and it gave me hope, I believe in god and I do agree with you. Thank you for sharing your story. May God bless you.
I had SSNHL and I took oral steroids and after that I received three intratympanic steroid injections. I believe it’s the injections that brought back 50% of my hearing in the ear that went deaf. I also believe that my faith that I would improve also was the cause for my Improvement.
Thank you for sharing. I loss my hearing a couple of years ago. I was already deaf in my right ear from birth. So when SSHL occurred in my left ear, I became deaf. Fortunately it was only for about 2 months. Over time some hearing came back in my left ear. I am what they label as hard of hearing now. And I agree with you, that over time you will begin to adjust. I was able to get a hearing aid for the left ear. It does help but of course it’s not 100%. But I’m thankful for what I have. Hi Rick, thanks for your story, it's very encouraging. I was diagnosed with SSHL 5 years ago and as you experienced I was put on steroids for a couple of weeks. I only regained around 15% of the hearing in my right ear. I too am a born again Christian and it really rocked my world. I had been involved in audio engineering and music for many years prior, so this was my worst nightmare. Hearing loss was like a death to me. I thought I would never play or record music again. But by the Lords grace He comforted me and strengthened me to carry on. I was resigned to the fact I would never play or record music again. Then I got to the point where I realized it wasn't the end of the world and He would always be my Lord and God. As He say's, all things work out for good for those that love the Lord. As time went on I persevered through the whole hearing aid ordeal. First with my deaf ear and then eventually surrendered and got the two hearing aids. Praise god He slowly taught me to manage with the hearing change and to this day I still lead worship at my church and record music. In fact over the lock down period we had here in New Zealand I wrote some of my best music. He taught me to trust in Him. I don't understand why He took away the sound in my right ear but I know He always has his reasons. He created us before the foundation of the world and He is the one who numbers all of our days. Praise God we can rest in Him
Sir I am also suffering from sensorial neural hearing loss from last 2and half years back in my right ear but my left ear is normal..and now at present I'm 24years old..I also believe in God..I hope that one day I will get back my hearing and hear from both my ear..Please pray for me also
Dear bro, I am also suffering from sudden hearing loss for 19 days. In these time I also suffering from vertigo / dizziness. Even I can't stand up from bed. Is this permanent hearing loss? Please say something & pray for me.
Thank you so much for sharing your story ..I am having some pressure in my ears along with tinnitus..I was treated for Acute otitis media with an antibiotic along with a decongestant..but so far it has not helped..I am at the point where now I just have to suck up and go and see an ENT to be properly diagnosed..I will be praying for you and Thanks again for sharing.
@@wildermccool1623 the steroids helped, I was lucky to get into an ENT even after my GP told me to wait a few weeks. I've regained most of my lost hearing to the point where the impact is much less sever, I think it's important people know you can have a positive outcome!

Thanks for your video. It struck a chord with me. I just turned 50 back on Jan 18, 2020. Had perfect hearing. I have always loved music, and I also like writing music. Music is my life. Back on Feb 1st, 2020, I woke up in the morning, and as I stepped out of bed, my right ear started ringing a little bit, and it sounded muffled. I chalked it up to sleeping all night on that side, and it probably got clogged up. I went to rinse out my ear canal, which usually always works. This time, it didn't. I was hearing perfectly the night before. I did notice my blood pressure was a bit high, so I took a hot bath the night before to calm my nerves. I have panic attacks from time to time. Anyway, I went in to work that morning that it happened, and I noticed when I got there I suddenly felt very tired, and I felt really dizzy and I had to concentrate just to walk straight. The rest of the day, I felt really tired and dizzy, and the hearing just got worse and worse. When I left work that day, I went to a quick clinic, and they said I had a lot of ear way, and recommended an ear flush. The amount of ear wax that came out was startling, to say the least. After they were done, they said looked in my ear and said clean as a whistle, and asked me how I was hearing. I told them my left ear was clear, but I still couldn't hear much out of my right ear. The doc said to give it a while. It may have to repressurize from so much ear wax being removed. I went home, and a few hours later, still nothing changed. I turned out the light to go to sleep, and as I turned over on my side, my eyeballs were spinning in my head. It felt like I was falling. I turned on the light, and the room was spinning, but it stopped. At this point, my mind was racing, and my blood pressure had skyrocketed. I thought I was starting to have a stroke. I drove to emergency room, scared as hell, and they did an EKG. EKG was perfect. The doc came in, and seemed bewildered as to why I was there, wasting their time. I told him I thought it might have been the prelude to a stroke, since I have high BP issues. He said it wasn't a stroke, and did some coordination tests. Sent me home, and said it might just be a bruised eardrum. I told him my ear was ringing. He said he could refer m to an ENT, but I couldn't call for like 2 days, since they were closed on the weekend. I called the ENT in a couple of days, and they agreed to meet me immediately the next morning. Doc looked at me, did tuning fork test, and mentioned sudden hearing loss, but didn't go in to detail. Said I needed to go to an audiologist the next day and he would look at results. The audiologist said low frequency in right ear was a little below normal, but high frequency hearing was severely lost. Doc ended up putting me on 60mg per days, for 2 weeks, of pregnizone. It seems like a lot to me! The after two weeks, taper to one less pill per day, since I now take 6. All of last week I was an emotional roller coaster. I had really dark thoughts, and was worried to the point of crying.. A 50 year old man. Really. I was frantically reading everything online I could, and feared a tumor. or autoimmune inner ear disease, whch almost always spreads to other ear quickly. I feared going deaf, and how I would miss listening to music. I don't mind not hearing people. Just don't take away the music!! Anyway, this is my 5th night taking the corticosteroid. I noticed when I first started taking it 4 nights ago, the ringing intensified. But during the way, I notice it less. It seems loudest around 8pm at night. Weird thing is, I sleep like a baby. I don't notice of hear it in my sleep. Just tonight, the high pitch ringing is loud, but I feel like I can hear sound a little better out of that ear. I can turn down the volume lower, and still hear in that ear, albeit still a little muffled. I heard from other people that after taking the pregnizone for a few weeks, the hearing got better, but the ringing was the last thing to go, or diminish. I am hoping all goes well. At this point, I just want the ringing to stop, because it never ends!
Charles Sidwell you have such an amazingly similar story to mine. I am about to hit the 3 year mark and holding steady. Still have ringing but I don’t think about it too often. It’s disappointing to pick up a guitar because the sound is on my right where I can’t hear well. Electric guitar is ok if I keep the amp on my left! Most people say I don’t want to hear myself play anyway, lol. Praying for recovery for us all. God bless you.

Thank you for sharing your story. I have also experienced sudden sensorineural hearing loss almost a year ago. I can really appreciate your outlook and the comfort that comes from the Lord. As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I have found great comfort in knowing that someday I will be "whole" again and I thank our Heavenly Father everyday for His plan for us and for His Son Jesus Christ who died for us. It it through this knowledge and testimony that I am able to get through the days with this new challenge. I have found that, because of my deficits in physical hearing, I have learned to "listen" with my spirit and in some ways it's actually easier get in touch with God. One of the most disheartening things for me has been what this condition does to my ability to hear music as it really is. The organ is always off key for me (almost painful at times) and yet I can now focus even more on the words of my favorite hymns and their meaning. When I listen to "oldies" from my favorite groups from the 60s and 70s, I can still smile as I remember the good times I had in those days. There is ALWAYS something to be thankful for, even on the worst days. And I have become more compassionate and empathetic toward people with ANY physical challenge. I have been surrounded by my own disabled children, worked with the elderly with hearing and other impairments and have friends with physical disabilities. And yet, this experience with my hearing has done more to make me "understand" than anything else ever has. And for that I am grateful. Wishing you many more blessings in your journey .....
IRick, thanks for your story. I would encourage anyone who has suffered sudden hearing loss to get an MRI. I already suffer from hearing loss in both ears, moderate in one and severe in the other. FYI - loss of hearing in one ear compared to the other can be a major red flag that something could be wrong. The only reason, I believe, the ENT didn't order other tests before was because I was insistent that my hearing loss was due to an injury from firing a pistol. I also have severe tinnitus. I wear hearing aids for the last couple of years which helps obviously with hearing and it also dampens the tinnitus because it picks up so much background noise. Also, having bluetooth available at all times is really nice. Fast forward to one month ago and I suddenly lost hearing in my right ear. Went to the ENT after 10 days (way too long) and was given a steroid shot and a 10 day regiment of oral prednisone. I was also scheduled for a MRI and a follow up shot of steroids through the eardrum. After taking the shot and only one of the oral steroids before bed that evening, I awoke the next morning and could hear again. I waited one day and cancelled the terrifying shot through the ear drum but kept the MRI appt. Good thing....results found a tumor which they call Vestibular Schwannoma or Acoustic Neuroma. These are benign tumors that grow on the Vestibular balance nerves going from your inner ear (cochlea) to the brain. After much research over this past weekend I heard one doctor say that 10-20% of all people with Acoustic Neuromas will experience a sudden hearing loss like this. I'm simply suggesting to ask your doctor about an MRI if you have this type hearing loss as it would be a good idea to rule out an Acoustic Neuroma.
Hi Rick, Thank you for sharing your story. I experienced my first episode of SSHL 2yrs ago (June 2017) I didn't realize it at the time that's what had happened or was happening. My initial hearing loss episode was accompanied by mild symptoms of vertigo and dizziness that seemed to subside within a day or two. I saw my PCP within a couple of days as well. She recommended flonase and offered to refer me to ENT. It took me 4 mos or so to get into an ENT...upon learning the results of my hearing test at the apt, I learned I had permanent hearing loss. She recommended a hearing aid. In the health field myself, I was on board with the idea, knowing there are mental health and possibly longer term cognitive consequences for failing to do something. Fast forward to 4 weeks ago, again in June, 2yrs after my first episode. I suffered another event, this one was more severe. The vertigo and dizziness were nauseating and impossible to navigate. I couldn't stand up or walk a straight line from one room to the next. Knowing there were the symptoms of my first episode. I went straight to emergency...hoping that immediate steroids would prevent additional hearing loss. It didn't work. Within 12 hours, I lost the rest of my hearing. It attached the same ear. Both episodes occurred to my left ear. My only hope for restoring bilateral hearing is a cochlear implant...and I'm seriously considering it. While my right ear hears perfectly I'm now permanently deaf on my left side. This second attack has left me with a lot of uncertainty and anxiety about the future of my one good ear. There's not a lot of research on SSHL and they don't really know what causes it. My ENT attempted to reassure me that it's unlikely or extremely rare that my good side will be compromised later...but they can't say for sure. Even though SSHL have a track record of targeting only one ear...it's not unheard of for it to hit both sides. They're calling it Labyrinthitis but those patients don't normally suffer permanent hearing loss and I equally don't know how common it is to experience more than one episodes like have.
Debra Warrick hi Debra. Thanks for sharing that. Sorry to hear about your hearing loss. At this point I have not taken any action on getting a hearing aid. Maybe one day. I, too, worry about my other ear but I don’t think about it much. As it is today, I can still work so I am counting my blessings. Hope you get some relief. 🙏🏻

A month ago I experienced sudden sensonural hearing loss, I took the steroids didnt do much for me, my ear problem is driving me crazy. I'm so depressed and I feel so alone in this because my family doesn't understand that although I cant hear anything from my right ear...that loud noises really hurt my ear and give me headaches. I feel severe brain for and it feels/sounds like I have a blow dryer in my ear all day. What has helped you deal with this? Please help
CUBAMEX I haven’t had any improvement since making this video but that doesn’t mean you won’t have improvement. As a Christian, I leave everything at the cross. I’ll endure anything Jesus allows in my life. He suffered and died in order for my sins to be forgiven. I hope you have put your faith in Him. I will pray for your healing. You are not alone. @@wildermccool I went through with the Cochlear Implant, in January, 6 mos after my final hearing loss event. It's a process. It's not as sensitive as nature made but with the help of Science, my binaryl hearing has been restored. Perhaps, more than that, my new bionic ear has helped reduced my anxiety about the future of my remaining hearing, restored sound localization and given me the confidence to navigate busy environments and hear in crowed settings again. It's a game changer.
I woke up on April 7 2023 with total deafness in my right ear after a high fever. Exactly as you describe, the Prednisone, 10% restoration (but very screechy) etc. But I also had an MRI this week which discovered a large brain tumor which the doctor says is non malignant but was totally unexpected. So this was a rough week. I believe in Jesus Christ too, and that may be the only reason Ive been able to take this catastrophic news in stride.
Wow, David. That must have been shocking news. Praying for you. These trials most certainly develop character, hope, and perseverance in us. Read Revelation 21:1-7 for some encouragement and hope. God bless you. Keep the faith.
Thank you very much for sharing! I have had the same problem for about 3 weeks now and the specialist could not offer any solution but prednisolon. I am taking that now, but I also believe that there is a reason for everything that happens in life, and there is a lesson in everything good or things that we deem as less good or bad. @@54031f glad you're improving. Yes i was diagnosed on friday with sudden sensonural hearing loss. Been taking the steroids for 4 days and i see no difference in my hearing loss 😭
@@MsCubanmex I am sorry to hear that!!! (it is ironic right? "to hear that"!!!). Prednisolone (steroid) did not work for me at all. The improvement was not because of the medicine. But I did notice though that if water goes into my ear, I get more tinnitus. It has been a month since I saw the specialist. Since there has been some spontaneous improvement without taking any measures (save for not letting water to go into my ear), I decided to wait it out and see how far it goes. Need to be patient and hopeful! Hang in there!

@@wildermccool This is brother Peter again to you......Thank you, I won't take much of your time but let me encourage you with this one. I don't have the problem you have regarding your ear, but for me it all started in High School, my right ear will suddenly block and after two days or so it will open up by itself, that was very annoying and frightening for me, sometimes in the middle of a Class it will just block yet it was clean inside and I used to stuggle with that. That went on for years even after High School, they checked it and everything was always perfect yet they couldn't explain the pain/aching that came with it you see. Finally God heard me one day, I had a dream one night that a bird flew by me and perched on my right shoulder, as I was wondering what was going on, it stuck its beak right in my ear and started to peck, I remember going "ouch, ouch", it went on for a while then I woke up. Ever since that dream, my ear never blocked again, it hears clearly like the other one, from time to time I have a bit of pain in it especially when I get flu and all but other than that God healed me through that bird in the dream, I just went to the Odiologist a couple days ago, hearing is still normal in both ears, wonderful, God is our healer brother, blessings to you and keep the hope!

Dennis, lots of people improve and many completely recover. Don’t give up hope. I just went for a one year re-evaluation and my hearing has improved more than I thought. Word recognition is way up, and I only have loss in my right ear that is profound at 2000 hertz and above. (Hopefully you’ll learn to read an audiogram). The TInnitus was terrible the first 3 weeks then got WAY better. Now I hardly notice it. Check out the Facebook group- Sudden Hearing Loss. A great community for support. Good luck!
You are still lucky Rick, God with you. I am suffering hearing loss and tinnitus of my left ear and after few treatments that did not work. I just started 2 days ago with acupuncture and do hope God will help me to heal it.

Thank you for your testimony. I found my husband passed away in bed on 11 July - shocked beyond belief as he had had a recent Dr exam and was healthy. Woke up 12 July, I was totally deaf in R ear and half L ear, still am deaf. I’m also a very active Christian so your encouraging words have helped. 😔🙏🏻
Amen. I am experiencing this now and not confident about things turning around with my sudden hearing loss; I have an upcoming 2nd hearing test and meet with an ENT. From what I researched and heard on several occasions form first time SSHL folks is there not much Dr can do and they also don't know the cause of SSHL but only have some ideas. I hope and pray my hearing returns to my left ear. The sovereign Lord allowed this to happen to me and I am mostly prepared to not regain my hearing. I would be a terrible tv preacher for I have believe that christians are not exempt from suffering in life. My strength and hope are in Christ and will be more so in the days to come. He can heal me miraculously or through medicines/Dr. it does not change, God is good!
I have to give a shout out to my Lord and savior Jesus Christ!!! I was very pessimistic about my hearing loss and even the prednisone that the general Dr prescribed until I could be seen by ENT Dr. They did consult him on dosage/length that I should take. Anyways after two week on it, I regained hearing in left ear; I was seen by the audiologist for a follow up hearing test to see if any progress was made. and I had an apointment with the ENT Dr; both were blown away with the recovery of 40% almost back to normal; although I still have minor tinnitus but overall almost back to normal. The ENT wanted me to go ahead and get an MRI to make sure not tumors were present to cause this. Again clear no tumors. God has been gracious to me in giving me my hearing back; I am thankful for his goodness in my life.
i hear you brother, pardon the pun this happened to me 6 months ago went to bed one woke up with full ear thought must be wax but nope i ended up with an ear infection walk in centre 2 times antibiotics 2 times back to Drs more antibiotics had terrible headaches was eating pain killers like sweets eventually wen to a private hearing clinic to see if they could clean my ear as it had stopped leaking from a perforation they looked and said tell your Dr to refer you ASAP to the ENT dept after 3 visits cleaning and a polyp removed long story short honest i was pretty suicidal lost all confidence hated going out only felt better in bed i bought an ear amplifier from Amazon and it was a Godsend its gave me balance and i could hear much better its not perfect but its better than it was i was told i have mild hearing loss after a hearing test i prayed it was a eustachian tube symptom ( same symptoms ) that could be treated and my hearing would return but no, sensory loss, now have a hearing aid again not perfect but i get by i am still pretty much damaged mentally and i might never by the same person but i have a partner and grandson who rely on me so i'm plodding on for them, pretty sure if not for them i might not be here to write this story so give the hearing amplifiers a try then move to hearing aids if need be
I lost my hearing in my right ear too, yes it sucks! I went to an ENT specialist and they recommended ear injections. I had only 18% hearing left and after the 1st shot I went to 56%. Just got a second shot last week. It's a injection straight through the ear drum, it hurts but it's worth the pain. Don't give up my friend Good luck and God bless
Rick Weaver, thank you for this post. I just found out about my ear condition last Thursday. To start from the beginning I started hearing buzzing sound or like little wind blowing in my right ear on April 5 Thursday and thought it was nothing of a big deal which will go away in a day or two. It was bother some but I didn't have any pain or was able to sleep normal. I never had this experience before and was not aware of tinnitus. I waited few days and by Tuesday I noticed not just the buzzing/hissing but also I am hearing less volume on my right ear compare to the left with the same TV volume sound. It' not that I can't hear on right ear, it's just little tiny bit less volume sound hearing if we put it as a tv or radio for an example. On Wednesday April 11, I went to see my Doctor who had me get x-ray done for sinus and referred me to see an ENT doctor the next day. So on Wednesday April 12, I had my hearing test done and was seen by ENT doctor. He said it's a mild hearing loss on the right ear but hearing it, I got sad, scared and worried and started crying. Along with lots of medical terms that I didn't catch, he said its sort of tinnitus. He prescribed me meds for a month and wants me to come back for follow up and re do the hearing test again. He said meds sometimes help patients with hearing but can't guarantee. The doctor has prescribed me Prednisone for a month that will start from high dose to low. My medication for a month Prednisone 60mg daily for 7 days ( 12 tabs - ( each tab is 5mg ) Prednisone 40mg daily for 7 days ( 8 tabs - ( each tab is 5mg ) Prednisone 20mg daily for 7 days ( 4 tabs - ( each tab is 5mg ) Prednisone 10mg daily for 7 days ( 2 tabs - ( each tab is 5mg ) I started my meds from Friday April 13 and will finish up on Thursday May 10. And I have the follow up appointment on Tuesday May 15. I would really appreciate any advices or tips you can give that you wish you knew for your self or have learnt through your experience. Are there any medical test or meds you wish your doctors have done differently? Do you think I should wait and finish the med and do the follow up or would it be better to see another ENT for second opinion? If or what kinda things should I look for thats not right and go see my doctor or ER. So sorry for all my questions. I am just so worried and scared and want any help or tips that will help me in my mission to regain my hearing. Thank you in advance.
kelly c Thanks for sharing your story. I, too, was in tears at the beginning. It’s scary and it is like mourning the loss of a loved one. Unfortunately I was not one of the ones that regains their hearing. But, I have so adjusted to it, it is not a big deal at all anymore. I hope your prognosis is better than mine. Theres a clinical trial on the clinicaltrials.gov website going on right now with the drug a FX-322 for Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss, hopefully this will work and be approved by the FDA as I suffer as well.
Thank you for sharing. I accidently came across your testimony. I am a believer and hearing what you had to say really blessed me. I lost 100% hearing in my left ear. I still struggle after a year. It is very hard to be in a crowded room and the music at church is almost impossible for me to spend much time worshipping. I make myself stay because I love to worship. Enough said. Thank you Rick for your video. Really interesting how you told about one ear taking over since this is the same that happened to me. Actually (I have SSHL on left ear) when I cover my right ear, I sometimes have the feeling to hear less left ... In fact I always don't hear much left anymore at all - even though I am wearing a hearing aid since years now but my good ear compensates a lot of it and I am really thankful for this. We all should heep in mind that the treatment doctors give in sich cases are only based on theorys. There are no scientific studies that actually prove that those coriosteroids will help and as you said there is absolutely no reason to try injections if tablets did not help you since the only difference is the time it takes to have a potential impact. Also there is no proven timeframe in which you can say for sure that your hearing won't get better anymore - doctors simply don't know. The only tell you their experiences and what they read themselves. Unfortunately SSHL is still a big mystery and doctors are assuming. Best thing you can do is to adjust - just like you did. It is not the end of the world and there's still much you can do and enjoy the same you could before. Yes, it is a bad thing but it is up to ourselves how bad we let us impact it. To everybody who is experiencing SSHL I wish you all the best and don't give up hope.
Hello sir and happy new year. I have just got out of the hospital having the same issue. My case was even worst because i had dizziness and tinnitus. Sudden hearing loss with dizziness and tinnitus means that there is already an extend damage , not only in the area responsible for hearing called hair cells inside the cochlea organ. Please allow me to go to some vital details for everybody as this is a situation that needs high dose of cortizone in less than 12 hours to have some more chances to restore SOME of the hearing. We are talking about inner ear damage. It cannot be prevented as many different reasons can create this issue but we DO know that poor blood circulation may cause among others this problem.Poor blood circulation may definitely occur even in healthy people when they have an eating disorder (ex. eating too many sweets at once) . There are levels of severeness in this issue. First level is only hearing loss , now , this is quite tricky because the lack of other symptoms leeds more of the people to think that their ears are just blocked. How can you tell the difference from just cold (flue) , blocked ear - you can push air holding your nose and that should work , and severe sudden hearing loss ? Its very simple , many people at least a few times in their life has experienced a small high pitch noise in their ears that gone away after seconds.That noise is the creation of the brain. The brain creates that noise to cover up lost sound information that have just got lost in the inner ear. At that moment some of the ear hair tiny cells or even a small part of the acoustic nerve stopped feeding the brain with information. The brain reacts trying to keep the initial balance of sounds by creating this short high pitch sound that goes away in seconds meaning that the sound information has been restored. There is ABSOLUTELY no good reason , to have any sudden change in volume , high frequencies or low frequencies in your hearing , flue needs days to block the ear and you WILL have fever , inchy noise as the virus passes from respiratory system first. Middle ear otitis can be a reason and yes , you need some experience to self exam this but just to give a point , with middle ear otitis you have fluids after the ear drum which again means that holding your nose and pushing air will interfere with the existing fluid (divers have a lot of experience in this ) Second level is hearing loss with tinnitus , probability of (partial always) recovery is against you here . Third level is Hearing loss with tinnitus and low sense of balance.Here we have an extend damage as hair cells are gone , the semicircular canals and the otolith - responsible for balance are gone too. The whole inner structure has been attached here and probability is really against you.The only good thing is that losing balance may alert you to go to the hospital, and that was my case. Hearing ability is measured with volume (db) and frequencies starting at 125(bass) up to 8000hz. People can hear up to 20.000 when they are young but normally an adult can hear up 14000hz which gives that extra quality in sounds , so you can hear leafs falling , small birds . If suddenly and for no good reason(ex. a good explanation losing some of our hearing can be a gunshot) you realize that your hearing has change you have to go to the hospital right away.Time is against you. Its similar to heart attack. I do hope that this may help people to get some more chances of recovery. God bless you all !
Hi Rick, thank you for sharing your experience and I have just been diagnosed by the ENT specialist yesterday that my left year has a severe hearing loss. It was depressing to me and I was very disappointing as I love listening to music and singing, with this left ear hearing loss, it is a major blow to my personal life while I am relaxing and at rest. Same situation with me, I am now on Prednisone with a taper schedule for two weeks starting today. Pray for me... A couple of questions, if I may, did they ask you to check out your brain behind your right ear via MRI to be sure if there is anything blocking the SSHL ? Also, you mentioned that you now have about 15% hearing capability back, are you having this recovery in a gradual situation or all at a sudden it came back ? Again, I am grateful for your sharing this special experience and I am very happy that you are able to deal with this loss by trusting God. For sure we Praise Him for this glory as he has been carrying us through all trials, challenges and adversity, even with the hearing loss. BTW: I am thinking about getting a sound amplifier bud (SMB) for my ear...know sure if you have researched about that and if you could share with me the best choices for the SMB? Thanks for writing. The MRI supposedly checked my brain and ear structures and no issues were seen in either area. The 15% was gradual over a few months I’d say. I haven’t done anything to augment the hearing in my bad ear. No hearing aids or other devices. I use earbuds for listening to music and phone conversations and the hearing is pretty good. In regular conversations I do have to turn to my good ear to hear better but I am used to it. Maybe one day I will look at hearing aids but for now I would rather avoid them. Thanks. Prayers...
Ty for sharing I am having issues with my ears right now its beein 3 months I feel worse I can hear out of my ears but I sometimes can't hear every word someone is saying they say I have ETD, they say different things I seen two ent's passed the hearing test but I feel so awful, my ears hurt they don't know why loud music bothers my ears please keep me in your prayers! I pray but sometimes I can not stand how I feel : ( stay blessed God will heal your ear!
Last week I lost my hearing at the right side completely overnight. Just the way this man describes. I can only hear muffled rumbling, crackling and a constant noise and funny plinking sounds from time to time. I went to see the specialist doctor, who put me on prednisone (oral). It does not make any difference, no improvement whatsoever. In six weeks I can get an MRI scan. In the meantime I panic as I think time is playing against me. I fear I will never hear music again, which is a big deal for me.
UK here ... had this during lockdown in 2020 I was very lucky and had two intratympanic steroid injections which saved my hearing ... I have two hearing aids now but without urgent help I would be completely deaf in my left ear ... if this happens to you get it sorted immediately
Glad you had a better experience than most. Many of us had immediate treatment with little or no results. It’s largely an unknown and affects each of us differently. Stay well.

I have moderately serve high frequency noise induced hearing loss from my time in the military. Before going into the army I had perfect hearing and knew nothing about noise damaging hearing. I blame myself and also suffer with tinnitus in my left ear I’m only 31 and have been diagnosed in November. I struggle with the acceptance and try to hold onto my faith in Jesus christ and knowing i’m not alone helps me. I am inspired to see soo many hearing impaired people with such a positive outlook and in so many ways I wished I had my hearing loss back but proud to be associated with such kind loving community as the hearing impaired. 🕊🙏🏼💆🏻♂️
Did you get loud tinnitus that lasts a long time? Has it since calmed down at all? I have SSNHL in my right ear. Woke up on Feb 1, 2020 with half my hearing (high frequency) in moderate to severe range of hearing loss. A few days,I started losing more hearing in that ear and my low frequency went from normal range to profound hearing loss. Now I can barely hear anything in that ear, the tinnitus has come roaring back, but now not only do I have high pitch tinnitus, I have crickets and low hum mixed in. It is giving me panic attacks day and night. It's a living hell. I should have called an ENT sooner, but 7 days after losing more and more hearing, I finally seen an ENT today and hope to get on the Prednisone right away if there is any chance of recovering some or most of what I lost over the past 5 or 6 days.
My tinnitus has been pretty consistent since my event 7 years ago. The first month was terrible but it now is just a high pitched whine. Occasionally it seems louder but pretty much the same. I’m sorry you are having so much trouble. Not sure if Prednisone will help but don’t stop looking for a solution. 🙏🏻
Thanks for sharing Rick. I had a question for you. I was wondering if you are able to "pop" your ears after the flight? I am trying to see if there is a correlation between the changes in pressure, the effects that has on the eustachian tube, and the hearing loss. Are you able to clear you ears (pop them) at this point. Thanks
My ears do clear after most flights but I have become convinced that my hearing loss is a result of that flight and the pressure in my ears and the hard sneezes I had the next day that structurally made a change inside my right ear. If that’s true then perhaps technically it’s not SSHL. Who knows at this point.
Hello Rick. Actually I am sad and crying since I loss my hearing in my right ear. That was 3 days ago, just like you my left ear is taking over, and I feel like I'm not hearing anything in my right ear. I'm not in US, I'm Peruvian (South America) and a ENT give me Corticoids shots. I am with COVID right now and I don't know if that was the trigger for this. You video made me feel better because I would really like to recover my right ear hearing. I hope with time that can happen to me. I would like to know how you feel in your ear that little improvement. How was like. I will pray for you. Sorry about my English. A hug.
Hi Micky. Sorry you’re having to go through this. I have gotten so used to my situation I rarely think of it. Only difficulty is I do have to ask my wife to repeat herself often. I try to appreciate what I do hear rather than focus on what I’ve lost. I hope and pray your hearing returns.
You are very lucky to have had any return of your hearing. I have had 100% hear it loss in my left ear. Was able to see a very competent truthful ENT who told that 100% hearing loss never d returns. Have tried bilateral hearing aids but the left didn't add anything.Have some additional hearing loss on the right. I have found when talking t o people who eo I can't hear it helpsto.let them know that I can't hear them and we make accomodation. It is interesting that this so often happens in the left ear.
I too suffer from hearing loss. Left side completely gone , ride side fading. Been deaf on left side for about 9 yrs now. Have been wearing hearing aids for approx 8 yrs. They don’t seem to be working like they use to. Considering being evaluated for BAHA or such like, but I’m a little nervous about it. Have scheduled 3 times and backed out. Can any one give me some pros and cons? I do a good bit of public speaking, in crowds quite a bit.
I am 48. On 31/08/2021, after a short afternoon nap, I suddenly could no longer hear from my right ear. The conduit to the tympan had been swollen for a couple of days but nothing serious. I went to the ER and diagnosis was otitis (there was redness surrounding the tympan) with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drops for 5 days. No change. In the shower, could not feel the water jet hitting my tympan. It was that bad. Went back to the ER. Now prescribed oral antibiotics for 5 days. Amoxicillin. No change. Finally went to my GP who diagnosed SSHL and immediately put on oral steroids by an ENT specialist for 10 days 60mg of Prednisone. I did get more flexibility in the ear but no change as to my hearing. Oral steroids were extended for another 4 days at the same dosage and tapered for 3 days. No change. First injection into the ear via the tympan. 1 week later no change. Audio still shows -60 to 80 db for lower frequencies and between -60db and -120db for higher frequencies. Now on a further 7 days of oral steroids, 60mg Prednisone. No change. Absolutely devastated. The literature says early treatment (within 2 weeks) but I doubt this now. I started steroids after 10 days and well within the 2 weeks period. A buzzing noise in my ear outside when there is a lot of traffic. And it feels blocked. Still clinging to hope but time is against me....
So sorry to read this. I pray you discover in time that you will adjustment to this. It may never be what it was, but you will settle into a new normal. That won’t seem very comforting now but in the grand scheme of things, think how much worse off some other folks are. If you can walk and talk and see and carry stuff, you can do more than many others. And for me as a Christian, it’s all small stuff to me compared to the glory that awaits as a forgiven child of God through Christ.
@@Truthseeker1515 For me, they likely will not help. Since I have only 60-65% comprehension in my right ear, a hearing aid will likely just amplify garbled sound for me.
I had stroke bad insurance, and I can't get a doctor here won't help me because of that, trying for a clinical trail for help throws my balance off as well
Hi, I am on week 6 of my SSHL, I’ve lost 100% of my left ears hearing. I was put on prednisone within 48 hours of this happening and was told there is a small chance I will regain some over the next couple of months. I am still dealing with balance issues but it’s better than it was in the beginning. It was such a quick loss that my brain is still trying to compensate, it damaged my balance center but there are exercises that you can do to retrain your brain. It was very difficult emotionally and I am still adjusting. My family had been great. I am hoping to go back to work in another week. Because of my job I didn’t trust my driving but I’m out and doing most things. The balance issues are as bad as the deafness. But I was told it would get better with time and vestibular exercises. Let me summarise: I got SSHL, I took steroids, I took antivirals (which are not supported by any study), I did not take steroid inner ear shots because these are not supportes to be more effecive than orals although there is anegdotal evidence of ppl regaining hearing with shots long past due oral steroids efficacy window, I did not try hyperbaric chamber (which is supported by many studies), I did not try hearing aid to stimulate my weak ear... Praise Jesus! ... Man, you gotta love US healthcare.

Thank you so much for putting this video up. It is one of my life lines right now. I am also a believer in Jesus. I’m about 12 days into my SSNH. The noise in my ear is what is causing me the most anxiety. Do you have any more words of encouragement regarding this? I am beginning to taper off prednisone and will see my ENT next week for audiogram and possible injections. I just started hyperbaric therapy per ENT suggestion. My loss is moderate in lowest frequency then steeply sloping to profound. Thank you for sharing your story and saying “you will adjust”. I’m impatiently waiting to adjust. Thanking God for you. Hi JR, I am now 3 yrs and 2 months in and I literally never think much of it. I sense no real loss of quality of life as I am so adjusted to anything, I do not sense a loss of anything. I am sure that is hard to believe at 12 days but trust me, the same will happen for you. I always remember though that this world is not the end. Whether hearing loss, financial loss or covid-19, I just need to trust Him through it all.
Wow I totally relate to your story. I am going on month two and I have had the exact same experience with my right ear. I had pink eye in my right eye right before it though.
@@wildermccool1623yea idk, my ent seems to think it was caused by a viral infection and she said it was most likely that since it was right before it and on the same side as the ear that was affected. Who knows though.
I have hearing aids for SNL my left being worse, then 3 weeks ago I experienced sudden drop in right ear but couldn't get to audiologist for 2 weeks. He said it should have been treated as an emergency but now after a round of tests I've lost 15 decibels so he's had to adjust the aids to compensate. He did say to go to ENT or at least get on the books for next time. In my case it might be autoimmune and steroids may have helped initially.
@@drayp253 mine are resound rechargeable which I can optimise through my phone if I enter a hall, or shops or watching TV etc. They are a few years old now and the only thing it missed was connecting to ipad or tablets but I did get the gizmo that helped that. In Australia the government does help with costs for seniors but they were still expensive. I think they were $5k I paid $3k. Also if my tinnitus is really bad the aids do help.

No, I can’t say it’s better. I think the coping just comes naturally as you adjust everyday to the new reality. It takes time. Each person will be different due to how they’ve been affected. Hope you’re ok.
I’m am 14 and can’t tell if I have this or not It’s been hard to hear for about 1 month now and I went on an anti biotic and it didn’t help at all I’d say I have about 25% hearing please help me I have been praying and would ask if you guys can as well
I am deaf left ear 20 years and now my right ear is being attacked with deaf episodes and I only had 60% hearing in the right ear. So I’m not too positive because I wonder when the next attack will happen a month a year or never. I now have to wear a hearing aid always that how bad the right has become
Mine occured in mid december, i sought treatment on dec 26th. 2 weeks pred, now 4th cort injection today. Most likely i waited too long. Its only the left, i have lost the bads decibels and has been very hard on me......i am trying natural remedies. Ues, it felt like clogged ear for a week and the hearing got worse. It has leveled, dont know that i will receive any further help. A hearing aid will be the next step, i am 45. Thank God the right is ok still.
Jason Oquinn so sorry this happened to you. You will adjust to it. There may be improvement at anytime so don’t lose hope but keep an eternal perspective. Praying for you.
Hi, so I was sitting on the couch and for about a minute I heard a ringing in my right ear and during that time i lost hearing in that ear, but after the minute I could hear again, now maybe 2 hours after this i feel a dull pain in that ear. Is this sshl or something else??
KingDragon777 I don’t know but I would consider going to your doctor to discuss it. If he doesn’t know what SSHL is then I’d go to an ENT. The earlier the diagnosis and treatment the better. Maybe it’s just an infection. See a doctor.
Going through the same struggle, started prednisone today, also had neglected the fact that my wisdom teeth are are impacted. Have you had your wisdom teeth pulled?
I've just learned to deal with it, i did gain some hearing back. Prednisone got me really sick, angry and i lost a lot of weight when i was on it. MRI results came back negative for any Acoustic Nueromas or brain tumors.
CUBAMEX its been 3 years. I have bouts of anxious dizzieness at times, random tinnitus flares in the affected ear. It is much more tolerable now. I am diagnosed with TMJ. Im still in the process of figuring it out still. I have gotten a little better.
@@jacobdalton6868 its funny you mention tmj ...i suffer from that too. In fact, the day before i experienced my sudden hearing loss, i was feeling a little tightness on my jaw, ( where the ear is) and i tried popping it to see if i can get relief like i normally did. However this time when i tried popping it.....it felt completely different from any other time. It was difficult to pop but i popped it and knew at that point that perhaps i may have caused damage...not to my ear, but to my jaw. Well, next morning ....i had no hearing from my right ear...i had bad vertigo and nausea and it pretty much went downhill from there. I asked my ent if it could have anything to do with my jaw popping and he said no
My story is way worse, but there is hope. I had SSHL over the course of 5 years once a week at least - always with recovery but of course it would lead to a lot of tinnitus. My advice: Take plenty b12 injections (i take 1ml a week) of hydroxocobolamin (which is the only version of b12 you should be looking for). Doctors didn’t help. If you have SSHL i can guarantee you: you don’t need to see a doctor because a doctor will not do anything helpful at all - they lack the knowledge. It’s there in science articles but for some reason it doesn’t seem to be anything doctors would learn about these days.
Actually my cholesterol had been bad for several years prior to this. A year ago I actually was diagnosed with CAD and now with the help of Lipitor my cholesterol is under control. No improvement in hearing now though.
@@wildermccool I’m wondering if there is truly a link. I’m going to a neurologist now. I’ve heard ear stroke as a cause. My LDL and triglycerides have always been high.
I am training, or my brain is to use the full right ear to compensate for the left. I hear treble in the left, lower volume, but it does have some capacity. Try doing binaural and hair cell repair forced RUclips videos. I am doing that. You are not alone bud. Yes, i love God and Jesus. Cling to your wife, i am all alone, no family, no partner, i am all alone except for Christ. Cling to family......
I argued with the ENT. Deep down I suspect it was the sneezes. Nevertheless, there is nothing they can do. The MRI did not show any structural damage that might have resulted from a forcible sneeze. If I kept looking for a doctor willing to go in there and see if they could find/fix any damage, it is probably more likely that my hearing could be lost completely or the tinnitus would be much worse or I could have persistent dizziness issues. I have grown accustomed to how I hear and the grace of God is sufficient for me to deal with it. Thanks for commenting.
@@wildermccool the reason why I decided to look up sshl was because 5 or 10 minutes after sneezing, I experienced near complete hearing loss in my left ear. There was an intense ringing, and my hearing came back completely 5 to 10 seconds later. This has happened to me before and I never think much about it because it always comes back. I'd say it happens to me a couple times a year. Do you think this is sshl? Should I see a doctor? I'm a musician and I'm only 22. It scares the life out of that apparently, people suddenly lose their hearing and never get it back. Thanks for your response!
@@lucid685 No. All the research said that as long as you could stomach the oral prednisone the injections showed no better results. Lots of studies showed that and my ENT said the same thing.
Not joking, this happened to me and I was told it is also a side effect of viagra. Just throwing that out there. They call it viagra deafness. I'm 60 years old by the way. Good luck to you.

Heartfelt thanks for posting this video, Rick. I’ve been so struggling with SSHL for the past 28 days. Sadly, I was misdiagnosed by my primary care physician...and by the time I got into my ENT, I had far surpassed the window where Prednisone will have a potential impact. Audiology tests confirm SSHL and 70% loss...and I’m scheduled for an MRI in two weeks. I’m in Upstate NY and feel like I’m in a U.K. health system. As a fellow believer I so appreciated your testimony. I’ve been praying and praying, have sought prayer at my church...and have faith that whatever happens, He works all things for our good. I will say...your comments regarding the early stages, it’s been an emotional roller coaster. The depressing feelings and anxiety = real...but I am 100% committed to overcoming this, whether that’s full and complete healing with a testimony of a miracle, or adjusting as necessary and giving thanks to God for the hearing I DO have. Same here. Mine started on May 10, 2021. Misdiagnosed and didn't get a chance to have hearing test after a month. Down to 38% on the left ear vs 95% on the right. I'm now on both steroid injection and prednisone, even trying acupuncture. After confirmation of SSHL, I'm very frustrated and depressed. Trying really hard to convince myself not to blame my PCP as a Christian. I've to accept that if God allow this to happen to me, He must have a good reason as I believe He loves me very very much. Hey Dan. I had to really check to see if I had posted this. This is exactly how I am going through my SSHL and Leukoaraiosis diagnosis. I have Multiple churches praying for me earnestly. You certainly are a child of God with what you are saying. Either way, I'm good. God will eventually heal all his children one day. All lifes struggles will end and Satan will be bound. We win in the end. We do struggle at times and this SSHL and tinnitus is hard. I now have empathy with others that have this. My hearing presently is total loss in left ear BUT GOD!

I experienced SSNHL 10 days ago. Not being able to listen from one ear is far worse than it seems so I feel you.
The first day I woke up hearing less in my right ear with a ringing noise that became worse during the day. I thought it might be wax and tried to individually clean my ear. However, I hoped it would get better the next day, but next morning I was completely deaf from that ear. Living in a farm in Argentina I drove 50 km to the nearest town where I found an ENT who checked my ear and ordered to do an audiogram which I did in the afternoon (36 hours since the incident started). She prescribed the max dose of corticosteroids which I started. Five days forward no improvement, I was still deaf in my right ear and wasc starting to get desperate. I started reading a lot and found some positive reviews using hyperbaric chamber oxygen therapy so I called one, made an appointment and started the next day I started the next day. From there on magic happened. The first session I heard a little pop in my ear for the first time. During the following sessions my hearing started improving significantly. I already had 4 sessions and I have already recovered 90% of my hearing loss. I still hear the ringing sometimes but it's less frequent and smoother.
I wanted to share this because if someone is suffering from SSNHL hyperbaric chamber therapy is a great alternative. Cheers
Went through and prayed for all the comments as well as you Rick! I got SSNHL too and possibly getting a bout of another onset with it. Working with my ENT about it right now. Please pray for any lost hearing to return and for my tinnitus (ear ringing) to cease. The tinnitus is what really gets to me.

Like you I’m a spiritualist as well and do believe whatever happens to us either by accident or karma, it always has a purpose in our lives.
When I look down at my challenges I’m still very healthy and I’m thankful for what I have.
Suffering belongs to this world and my own privilege.. it belongs to all of us.

I am going through the same story of hearing loss since Feb 28, 2021. I placed on Prednisone by the next day of the onset till the moment. I just watched your video and it gave me hope, I believe in god and I do agree with you.

I had SSNHL and I took oral steroids and after that I received three intratympanic steroid injections. I believe it’s the injections that brought back 50% of my hearing in the ear that went deaf. I also believe that my faith that I would improve also was the cause for my Improvement.
Thank you for sharing. I loss my hearing a couple of years ago. I was already deaf in my right ear from birth. So when SSHL occurred in my left ear, I became deaf. Fortunately it was only for about 2 months. Over time some hearing came back in my left ear. I am what they label as hard of hearing now. And I agree with you, that over time you will begin to adjust. I was able to get a hearing aid for the left ear. It does help but of course it’s not 100%. But I’m thankful for what I have. Again thank you for sharing your experience with others.

I was diagnosed with SSHL 5 years ago and as you experienced I was put on steroids for a couple of weeks. I only regained around 15% of the hearing in my right ear.
I too am a born again Christian and it really rocked my world. I had been involved in audio engineering and music for many years prior, so this was my worst nightmare. Hearing loss was like a death to me.
I thought I would never play or record music again. But by the Lords grace He comforted me and strengthened me to carry on. I was resigned to the fact I would never play or record music again. Then I got to the point where I realized it wasn't the end of the world and He would always be my Lord and God. As He say's, all things work out for good for those that love the Lord.
As time went on I persevered through the whole hearing aid ordeal. First with my deaf ear and then eventually surrendered and got the two hearing aids.
Praise god He slowly taught me to manage with the hearing change and to this day I still lead worship at my church and record music. In fact over the lock down period we had here in New Zealand I wrote some of my best music. He taught me to trust in Him. I don't understand why He took away the sound in my right ear but I know He always has his reasons. He created us before the foundation of the world and He is the one who numbers all of our days. Praise God we can rest in Him

@@wildermccool1623 the steroids helped, I was lucky to get into an ENT even after my GP told me to wait a few weeks. I've regained most of my lost hearing to the point where the impact is much less sever, I think it's important people know you can have a positive outcome!

Thanks for your video. It struck a chord with me. I just turned 50 back on Jan 18, 2020. Had perfect hearing. I have always loved music, and I also like writing music. Music is my life. Back on Feb 1st, 2020, I woke up in the morning, and as I stepped out of bed, my right ear started ringing a little bit, and it sounded muffled. I chalked it up to sleeping all night on that side, and it probably got clogged up. I went to rinse out my ear canal, which usually always works. This time, it didn't. I was hearing perfectly the night before. I did notice my blood pressure was a bit high, so I took a hot bath the night before to calm my nerves. I have panic attacks from time to time. Anyway, I went in to work that morning that it happened, and I noticed when I got there I suddenly felt very tired, and I felt really dizzy and I had to concentrate just to walk straight. The rest of the day, I felt really tired and dizzy, and the hearing just got worse and worse. When I left work that day, I went to a quick clinic, and they said I had a lot of ear way, and recommended an ear flush. The amount of ear wax that came out was startling, to say the least. After they were done, they said looked in my ear and said clean as a whistle, and asked me how I was hearing. I told them my left ear was clear, but I still couldn't hear much out of my right ear. The doc said to give it a while. It may have to repressurize from so much ear wax being removed. I went home, and a few hours later, still nothing changed. I turned out the light to go to sleep, and as I turned over on my side, my eyeballs were spinning in my head. It felt like I was falling. I turned on the light, and the room was spinning, but it stopped. At this point, my mind was racing, and my blood pressure had skyrocketed. I thought I was starting to have a stroke. I drove to emergency room, scared as hell, and they did an EKG. EKG was perfect. The doc came in, and seemed bewildered as to why I was there, wasting their time. I told him I thought it might have been the prelude to a stroke, since I have high BP issues. He said it wasn't a stroke, and did some coordination tests. Sent me home, and said it might just be a bruised eardrum. I told him my ear was ringing. He said he could refer m to an ENT, but I couldn't call for like 2 days, since they were closed on the weekend. I called the ENT in a couple of days, and they agreed to meet me immediately the next morning. Doc looked at me, did tuning fork test, and mentioned sudden hearing loss, but didn't go in to detail. Said I needed to go to an audiologist the next day and he would look at results. The audiologist said low frequency in right ear was a little below normal, but high frequency hearing was severely lost. Doc ended up putting me on 60mg per days, for 2 weeks, of pregnizone. It seems like a lot to me! The after two weeks, taper to one less pill per day, since I now take 6. All of last week I was an emotional roller coaster. I had really dark thoughts, and was worried to the point of crying.. A 50 year old man. Really. I was frantically reading everything online I could, and feared a tumor. or autoimmune inner ear disease, whch almost always spreads to other ear quickly. I feared going deaf, and how I would miss listening to music. I don't mind not hearing people. Just don't take away the music!! Anyway, this is my 5th night taking the corticosteroid. I noticed when I first started taking it 4 nights ago, the ringing intensified. But during the way, I notice it less. It seems loudest around 8pm at night. Weird thing is, I sleep like a baby. I don't notice of hear it in my sleep. Just tonight, the high pitch ringing is loud, but I feel like I can hear sound a little better out of that ear. I can turn down the volume lower, and still hear in that ear, albeit still a little muffled. I heard from other people that after taking the pregnizone for a few weeks, the hearing got better, but the ringing was the last thing to go, or diminish. I am hoping all goes well. At this point, I just want the ringing to stop, because it never ends!
Charles Sidwell you have such an amazingly similar story to mine. I am about to hit the 3 year mark and holding steady. Still have ringing but I don’t think about it too often. It’s disappointing to pick up a guitar because the sound is on my right where I can’t hear well. Electric guitar is ok if I keep the amp on my left! Most people say I don’t want to hear myself play anyway, lol. Praying for recovery for us all. God bless you.

Thank you for sharing your story. I have also experienced sudden sensorineural hearing loss almost a year ago. I can really appreciate your outlook and the comfort that comes from the Lord. As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I have found great comfort in knowing that someday I will be "whole" again and I thank our Heavenly Father everyday for His plan for us and for His Son Jesus Christ who died for us. It it through this knowledge and testimony that I am able to get through the days with this new challenge. I have found that, because of my deficits in physical hearing, I have learned to "listen" with my spirit and in some ways it's actually easier get in touch with God. One of the most disheartening things for me has been what this condition does to my ability to hear music as it really is. The organ is always off key for me (almost painful at times) and yet I can now focus even more on the words of my favorite hymns and their meaning. When I listen to "oldies" from my favorite groups from the 60s and 70s, I can still smile as I remember the good times I had in those days. There is ALWAYS something to be thankful for, even on the worst days. And I have become more compassionate and empathetic toward people with ANY physical challenge. I have been surrounded by my own disabled children, worked with the elderly with hearing and other impairments and have friends with physical disabilities. And yet, this experience with my hearing has done more to make me "understand" than anything else ever has. And for that I am grateful. Wishing you many more blessings in your journey .....

I would encourage anyone who has suffered sudden hearing loss to get an MRI. I already suffer from hearing loss in both ears, moderate in one and severe in the other. FYI - loss of hearing in one ear compared to the other can be a major red flag that something could be wrong. The only reason, I believe, the ENT didn't order other tests before was because I was insistent that my hearing loss was due to an injury from firing a pistol. I also have severe tinnitus. I wear hearing aids for the last couple of years which helps obviously with hearing and it also dampens the tinnitus because it picks up so much background noise. Also, having bluetooth available at all times is really nice.
Fast forward to one month ago and I suddenly lost hearing in my right ear. Went to the ENT after 10 days (way too long) and was given a steroid shot and a 10 day regiment of oral prednisone. I was also scheduled for a MRI and a follow up shot of steroids through the eardrum. After taking the shot and only one of the oral steroids before bed that evening, I awoke the next morning and could hear again. I waited one day and cancelled the terrifying shot through the ear drum but kept the MRI appt. Good thing....results found a tumor which they call Vestibular Schwannoma or Acoustic Neuroma. These are benign tumors that grow on the Vestibular balance nerves going from your inner ear (cochlea) to the brain. After much research over this past weekend I heard one doctor say that 10-20% of all people with Acoustic Neuromas will experience a sudden hearing loss like this.
I'm simply suggesting to ask your doctor about an MRI if you have this type hearing loss as it would be a good idea to rule out an Acoustic Neuroma.
Hi Rick, Thank you for sharing your story. I experienced my first episode of SSHL 2yrs ago (June 2017) I didn't realize it at the time that's what had happened or was happening. My initial hearing loss episode was accompanied by mild symptoms of vertigo and dizziness that seemed to subside within a day or two. I saw my PCP within a couple of days as well. She recommended flonase and offered to refer me to ENT. It took me 4 mos or so to get into an ENT...upon learning the results of my hearing test at the apt, I learned I had permanent hearing loss. She recommended a hearing aid. In the health field myself, I was on board with the idea, knowing there are mental health and possibly longer term cognitive consequences for failing to do something. Fast forward to 4 weeks ago, again in June, 2yrs after my first episode. I suffered another event, this one was more severe. The vertigo and dizziness were nauseating and impossible to navigate. I couldn't stand up or walk a straight line from one room to the next. Knowing there were the symptoms of my first episode. I went straight to emergency...hoping that immediate steroids would prevent additional hearing loss. It didn't work. Within 12 hours, I lost the rest of my hearing. It attached the same ear. Both episodes occurred to my left ear. My only hope for restoring bilateral hearing is a cochlear implant...and I'm seriously considering it. While my right ear hears perfectly I'm now permanently deaf on my left side. This second attack has left me with a lot of uncertainty and anxiety about the future of my one good ear. There's not a lot of research on SSHL and they don't really know what causes it. My ENT attempted to reassure me that it's unlikely or extremely rare that my good side will be compromised later...but they can't say for sure. Even though SSHL have a track record of targeting only one ear...it's not unheard of for it to hit both sides. They're calling it Labyrinthitis but those patients don't normally suffer permanent hearing loss and I equally don't know how common it is to experience more than one episodes like have.

I, too, worry about my other ear but I don’t think about it much. As it is today, I can still work so I am counting my blessings. Hope you get some relief. 🙏🏻

A month ago I experienced sudden sensonural hearing loss, I took the steroids didnt do much for me, my ear problem is driving me crazy. I'm so depressed and I feel so alone in this because my family doesn't understand that although I cant hear anything from my right ear...that loud noises really hurt my ear and give me headaches. I feel severe brain for and it feels/sounds like I have a blow dryer in my ear all day. What has helped you deal with this? Please help

@@wildermccool I went through with the Cochlear Implant, in January, 6 mos after my final hearing loss event. It's a process. It's not as sensitive as nature made but with the help of Science, my binaryl hearing has been restored. Perhaps, more than that, my new bionic ear has helped reduced my anxiety about the future of my remaining hearing, restored sound localization and given me the confidence to navigate busy environments and hear in crowed settings again. It's a game changer.
I woke up on April 7 2023 with total deafness in my right ear after a high fever. Exactly as you describe, the Prednisone, 10% restoration (but very screechy) etc. But I also had an MRI this week which discovered a large brain tumor which the doctor says is non malignant but was totally unexpected. So this was a rough week. I believe in Jesus Christ too, and that may be the only reason Ive been able to take this catastrophic news in stride.

I am taking that now, but I also believe that there is a reason for everything that happens in life, and there is a lesson in everything good or things that we deem as less good or bad. @@MsCubanmex I am sorry to hear that!!! (it is ironic right? "to hear that"!!!). Prednisolone (steroid) did not work for me at all. The improvement was not because of the medicine. But I did notice though that if water goes into my ear, I get more tinnitus. It has been a month since I saw the specialist. Since there has been some spontaneous improvement without taking any measures (save for not letting water to go into my ear), I decided to wait it out and see how far it goes. Need to be patient and hopeful! Hang in there!

I don't have the problem you have regarding your ear, but for me it all started in High School, my right ear will suddenly block and after two days or so it will open up by itself, that was very annoying and frightening for me, sometimes in the middle of a Class it will just block yet it was clean inside and I used to stuggle with that. That went on for years even after High School, they checked it and everything was always perfect yet they couldn't explain the pain/aching that came with it you see. Finally God heard me one day, I had a dream one night that a bird flew by me and perched on my right shoulder, as I was wondering what was going on, it stuck its beak right in my ear and started to peck, I remember going "ouch, ouch", it went on for a while then I woke up. Ever since that dream, my ear never blocked again, it hears clearly like the other one, from time to time I have a bit of pain in it especially when I get flu and all but other than that God healed me through that bird in the dream, I just went to the Odiologist a couple days ago, hearing is still normal in both ears, wonderful, God is our healer brother, blessings to you and keep the hope!

Dennis, lots of people improve and many completely recover. Don’t give up hope. I just went for a one year re-evaluation and my hearing has improved more than I thought. Word recognition is way up, and I only have loss in my right ear that is profound at 2000 hertz and above. (Hopefully you’ll learn to read an audiogram). The TInnitus was terrible the first 3 weeks then got WAY better. Now I hardly notice it. Check out the Facebook group- Sudden Hearing Loss. A great community for support. Good luck!

Amen. I am experiencing this now and not confident about things turning around with my sudden hearing loss; I have an upcoming 2nd hearing test and meet with an ENT. From what I researched and heard on several occasions form first time SSHL folks is there not much Dr can do and they also don't know the cause of SSHL but only have some ideas.
I hope and pray my hearing returns to my left ear. The sovereign Lord allowed this to happen to me and I am mostly prepared to not regain my hearing. I would be a terrible tv preacher for I have believe that christians are not exempt from suffering in life. My strength and hope are in Christ and will be more so in the days to come. He can heal me miraculously or through medicines/Dr. it does not change, God is good!
I have to give a shout out to my Lord and savior Jesus Christ!!! I was very pessimistic about my hearing loss and even the prednisone that the general Dr prescribed until I could be seen by ENT Dr. They did consult him on dosage/length that I should take. Anyways after two week on it, I regained hearing in left ear; I was seen by the audiologist for a follow up hearing test to see if any progress was made. and I had an apointment with the ENT Dr; both were blown away with the recovery of 40% almost back to normal; although I still have minor tinnitus but overall almost back to normal. The ENT wanted me to go ahead and get an MRI to make sure not tumors were present to cause this. Again clear no tumors. God has been gracious to me in giving me my hearing back; I am thankful for his goodness in my life.

went to bed one woke up with full ear
thought must be wax but nope
i ended up with an ear infection
walk in centre 2 times antibiotics 2 times
back to Drs more antibiotics
had terrible headaches was eating pain killers like sweets
eventually wen to a private hearing clinic to see if they could
clean my ear as it had stopped leaking from a perforation
they looked and said tell your Dr to refer you ASAP to the ENT dept
after 3 visits cleaning and a polyp removed
long story short honest
i was pretty suicidal lost all confidence hated going out
only felt better in bed
i bought an ear amplifier from Amazon and it was a Godsend
its gave me balance and i could hear much better
its not perfect but its better than it was
i was told i have mild hearing loss after a hearing test
i prayed it was a eustachian tube symptom ( same symptoms )
that could be treated and my hearing would return
but no, sensory loss, now have a hearing aid
again not perfect but i get by i am still pretty much damaged mentally
and i might never by the same person
but i have a partner and grandson who rely on me
so i'm plodding on for them, pretty sure if not for them
i might not be here to write this story
so give the hearing amplifiers a try then move to hearing aids if need be

I lost my hearing in my right ear too, yes it sucks!
I went to an ENT specialist and they recommended ear injections.
I had only 18% hearing left and after the 1st shot I went to 56%.
Just got a second shot last week.
It's a injection straight through the ear drum, it hurts but it's worth the pain.

To start from the beginning I started hearing buzzing sound or like little wind blowing in my right ear on April 5 Thursday and thought it was nothing of a big deal which will go away in a day or two. It was bother some but I didn't have any pain or was able to sleep normal. I never had this experience before and was not aware of tinnitus. I waited few days and by Tuesday I noticed not just the buzzing/hissing but also I am hearing less volume on my right ear compare to the left with the same TV volume sound. It' not that I can't hear on right ear, it's just little tiny bit less volume sound hearing if we put it as a tv or radio for an example. On Wednesday April 11, I went to see my Doctor who had me get x-ray done for sinus and referred me to see an ENT doctor the next day. So on Wednesday April 12, I had my hearing test done and was seen by ENT doctor. He said it's a mild hearing loss on the right ear but hearing it, I got sad, scared and worried and started crying. Along with lots of medical terms that I didn't catch, he said its sort of tinnitus. He prescribed me meds for a month and wants me to come back for follow up and re do the hearing test again. He said meds sometimes help patients with hearing but can't guarantee. The doctor has prescribed me Prednisone for a month that will start from high dose to low.
My medication for a month
Prednisone 60mg daily for 7 days ( 12 tabs - ( each tab is 5mg )
Prednisone 40mg daily for 7 days ( 8 tabs - ( each tab is 5mg )
Prednisone 20mg daily for 7 days ( 4 tabs - ( each tab is 5mg )
Prednisone 10mg daily for 7 days ( 2 tabs - ( each tab is 5mg )
I started my meds from Friday April 13 and will finish up on Thursday May 10. And I have the follow up appointment on Tuesday May 15.
I would really appreciate any advices or tips you can give that you wish you knew for your self or have learnt through your experience. Are there any medical test or meds you wish your doctors have done differently? Do you think I should wait and finish the med and do the follow up or would it be better to see another ENT for second opinion? If or what kinda things should I look for thats not right and go see my doctor or ER. So sorry for all my questions. I am just so worried and scared and want any help or tips that will help me in my mission to regain my hearing. Thank you in advance.
kelly c Thanks for sharing your story. I, too, was in tears at the beginning. It’s scary and it is like mourning the loss of a loved one. Unfortunately I was not one of the ones that regains their hearing. But, I have so adjusted to it, it is not a big deal at all anymore. I hope your prognosis is better than mine. My buzzing/hissing in the ear have subsided and good thing I was able to hear even when all these things started. I just taking the meds, changing my diet and staying positive.

Theres a clinical trial on the clinicaltrials.gov website going on right now with the drug a FX-322 for Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss, hopefully this will work and be approved by the FDA as I suffer as well.

It is very hard to be in a crowded room and the music at church is almost impossible for me to spend much time worshipping. I make myself stay because I love to worship. Enough said. Thank you Rick for your video. Really interesting how you told about one ear taking over since this is the same that happened to me. Actually (I have SSHL on left ear) when I cover my right ear, I sometimes have the feeling to hear less left ... In fact I always don't hear much left anymore at all - even though I am wearing a hearing aid since years now but my good ear compensates a lot of it and I am really thankful for this. We all should heep in mind that the treatment doctors give in sich cases are only based on theorys. There are no scientific studies that actually prove that those coriosteroids will help and as you said there is absolutely no reason to try injections if tablets did not help you since the only difference is the time it takes to have a potential impact. Also there is no proven timeframe in which you can say for sure that your hearing won't get better anymore - doctors simply don't know. The only tell you their experiences and what they read themselves. Unfortunately SSHL is still a big mystery and doctors are assuming. Best thing you can do is to adjust - just like you did. It is not the end of the world and there's still much you can do and enjoy the same you could before. Yes, it is a bad thing but it is up to ourselves how bad we let us impact it. To everybody who is experiencing SSHL I wish you all the best and don't give up hope.
Hello sir and happy new year. I have just got out of the hospital having the same issue. My case was even worst because i had dizziness and tinnitus. Sudden hearing loss with dizziness and tinnitus means that there is already an extend damage , not only in the area responsible for hearing called hair cells inside the cochlea organ.
Please allow me to go to some vital details for everybody as this is a situation that needs high dose of cortizone in less than 12 hours to have some more chances to restore SOME of the hearing.
We are talking about inner ear damage. It cannot be prevented as many different reasons can create this issue but we DO know that poor blood circulation may cause among others this problem.Poor blood circulation may definitely occur even in healthy people when they have an eating disorder (ex. eating too many sweets at once) .
There are levels of severeness in this issue.
First level is only hearing loss , now , this is quite tricky because the lack of other symptoms leeds more of the people to think that their ears are just blocked.
How can you tell the difference from just cold (flue) , blocked ear - you can push air holding your nose and that should work , and severe sudden hearing loss ?
Its very simple , many people at least a few times in their life has experienced a small high pitch noise in their ears that gone away after seconds.That noise is the creation of the brain. The brain creates that noise to cover up lost sound information that have just got lost in the inner ear. At that moment some of the ear hair tiny cells or even a small part of the acoustic nerve stopped feeding the brain with information. The brain reacts trying to keep the initial balance of sounds by creating this short high pitch sound that goes away in seconds meaning that the sound information has been restored. There is ABSOLUTELY no good reason , to have any sudden change in volume , high frequencies or low frequencies in your hearing , flue needs days to block the ear and you WILL have fever , inchy noise as the virus passes from respiratory system first. Middle ear otitis can be a reason and yes , you need some experience to self exam this but just to give a point , with middle ear otitis you have fluids after the ear drum which again means that holding your nose and pushing air will interfere with the existing fluid (divers have a lot of experience in this )
Second level is hearing loss with tinnitus , probability of (partial always) recovery is against you here .
Third level is Hearing loss with tinnitus and low sense of balance.Here we have an extend damage as hair cells are gone , the semicircular canals and the otolith - responsible for balance are gone too. The whole inner structure has been attached here and probability is really against you.The only good thing is that losing balance may alert you to go to the hospital, and that was my case.
Hearing ability is measured with volume (db) and frequencies starting at 125(bass) up to 8000hz. People can hear up to 20.000 when they are young but normally an adult can hear up 14000hz which gives that extra quality in sounds , so you can hear leafs falling , small birds .
If suddenly and for no good reason(ex. a good explanation losing some of our hearing can be a gunshot) you realize that your hearing has change you have to go to the hospital right away.Time is against you. Its similar to heart attack.
I do hope that this may help people to get some more chances of recovery.

Hi Rick, thank you for sharing your experience and I have just been diagnosed by the ENT specialist yesterday that my left year has a severe hearing loss. It was depressing to me and I was very disappointing as I love listening to music and singing, with this left ear hearing loss, it is a major blow to my personal life while I am relaxing and at rest. Same situation with me, I am now on Prednisone with a taper schedule for two weeks starting today. Pray for me...
A couple of questions, if I may, did they ask you to check out your brain behind your right ear via MRI to be sure if there is anything blocking the SSHL ? Also, you mentioned that you now have about 15% hearing capability back, are you having this recovery in a gradual situation or all at a sudden it came back ?
Again, I am grateful for your sharing this special experience and I am very happy that you are able to deal with this loss by trusting God. For sure we Praise Him for this glory as he has been carrying us through all trials, challenges and adversity, even with the hearing loss.
BTW: I am thinking about getting a sound amplifier bud (SMB) for my ear...know sure if you have researched about that and if you could share with me the best choices for the SMB? Hearing aid device is next step as well. Thanks again and God Bless. David.
Thanks for writing. The MRI supposedly checked my brain and ear structures and no issues were seen in either area. The 15% was gradual over a few months I’d say. I haven’t done anything to augment the hearing in my bad ear. No hearing aids or other devices. I use earbuds for listening to music and phone conversations and the hearing is pretty good. In regular conversations I do have to turn to my good ear to hear better but I am used to it. Maybe one day I will look at hearing aids but for now I would rather avoid them. Thanks. Prayers...

Ty for sharing I am having issues with my ears right now its beein 3 months I feel worse I can hear out of my ears but I sometimes can't hear every word someone is saying they say I have ETD, they say different things I seen two ent's passed the hearing test but I feel so awful, my ears hurt they don't know why loud music bothers my ears please keep me in your prayers! How did your situation turn out did you get your hearing back?
Last week I lost my hearing at the right side completely overnight. Just the way this man describes. I can only hear muffled rumbling, crackling and a constant noise and funny plinking sounds from time to time. I went to see the specialist doctor, who put me on prednisone (oral). It does not make any difference, no improvement whatsoever. In six weeks I can get an MRI scan. In the meantime I panic as I think time is playing against me. I fear I will never hear music again, which is a big deal for me.

UK here ... had this during lockdown in 2020 I was very lucky and had two intratympanic steroid injections which saved my hearing ... I have two hearing aids now but without urgent help I would be completely deaf in my left ear ... if this happens to you get it sorted immediately
Glad you had a better experience than most. Many of us had immediate treatment with little or no results. It’s largely an unknown and affects each of us differently. Stay well.

I have moderately serve high frequency noise induced hearing loss from my time in the military. Before going into the army I had perfect hearing and knew nothing about noise damaging hearing. I blame myself and also suffer with tinnitus in my left ear I’m only 31 and have been diagnosed in November. I struggle with the acceptance and try to hold onto my faith in Jesus christ and knowing i’m not alone helps me. I am inspired to see soo many hearing impaired people with such a positive outlook and in so many ways I wished I had my hearing loss back but proud to be associated with such kind loving community as the hearing impaired. 🕊🙏🏼💆🏻♂️

Did you get loud tinnitus that lasts a long time? Has it since calmed down at all? I have SSNHL in my right ear. Woke up on Feb 1, 2020 with half my hearing (high frequency) in moderate to severe range of hearing loss. A few days,I started losing more hearing in that ear and my low frequency went from normal range to profound hearing loss. Now I can barely hear anything in that ear, the tinnitus has come roaring back, but now not only do I have high pitch tinnitus, I have crickets and low hum mixed in. It is giving me panic attacks day and night. It's a living hell. I should have called an ENT sooner, but 7 days after losing more and more hearing, I finally seen an ENT today and hope to get on the Prednisone right away if there is any chance of recovering some or most of what I lost over the past 5 or 6 days.
My tinnitus has been pretty consistent since my event 7 years ago. The first month was terrible but it now is just a high pitched whine. Occasionally it seems louder but pretty much the same. I’m sorry you are having so much trouble. Not sure if Prednisone will help but don’t stop looking for a solution. 🙏🏻

I am trying to see if there is a correlation between the changes in pressure, the effects that has on the eustachian tube, and the hearing loss. Are you able to clear you ears (pop them) at this point. Thanks
My ears do clear after most flights but I have become convinced that my hearing loss is a result of that flight and the pressure in my ears and the hard sneezes I had the next day that structurally made a change inside my right ear. If that’s true then perhaps technically it’s not SSHL. Who knows at this point.

I'm not in US, I'm Peruvian (South America) and a ENT give me Corticoids shots. I am with COVID right now and I don't know if that was the trigger for this.

Hi Micky. Sorry you’re having to go through this. I have gotten so used to my situation I rarely think of it. Only difficulty is I do have to ask my wife to repeat herself often. I try to appreciate what I do hear rather than focus on what I’ve lost. I hope and pray your hearing returns.

You are very lucky to have had any return of your hearing. I have had 100% hear it loss in my left ear. Was able to see a very competent truthful ENT who told that 100% hearing loss never d returns. Have tried bilateral hearing aids but the left didn't add anything.Have some additional hearing loss on the right. I have found when talking t o people who
eo I can't hear it helpsto.let them know that I can't hear them and we make accomodation. It is interesting that this so often happens in the left ear.

I too suffer from hearing loss. Left side completely gone , ride side fading. Been deaf on left side for about 9 yrs now. Have been wearing hearing aids for approx 8 yrs. They don’t seem to be working like they use to.
Considering being evaluated for BAHA or such like, but I’m a little nervous about it. Have scheduled 3 times and backed out.
Can any one give me some pros and cons? I do a good bit of public speaking, in crowds quite a bit.
I am 48. On 31/08/2021, after a short afternoon nap, I suddenly could no longer hear from my right ear. The conduit to the tympan had been swollen for a couple of days but nothing serious. I went to the ER and diagnosis was otitis (there was redness surrounding the tympan) with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drops for 5 days. No change. In the shower, could not feel the water jet hitting my tympan. It was that bad. Went back to the ER. Now prescribed oral antibiotics for 5 days. Amoxicillin. No change. Finally went to my GP who diagnosed SSHL and immediately put on oral steroids by an ENT specialist for 10 days 60mg of Prednisone. I did get more flexibility in the ear but no change as to my hearing. Oral steroids were extended for another 4 days at the same dosage and tapered for 3 days. No change. First injection into the ear via the tympan. 1 week later no change. Audio still shows -60 to 80 db for lower frequencies and between -60db and -120db for higher frequencies. Now on a further 7 days of oral steroids, 60mg Prednisone. No change. Absolutely devastated. The literature says early treatment (within 2 weeks) but I doubt this now. I started steroids after 10 days and well within the 2 weeks period. A buzzing noise in my ear outside when there is a lot of traffic. And it feels blocked. Still clinging to hope but time is against me....
So sorry to read this. I pray you discover in time that you will adjustment to this. It may never be what it was, but you will settle into a new normal. That won’t seem very comforting now but in the grand scheme of things, think how much worse off some other folks are. If you can walk and talk and see and carry stuff, you can do more than many others. And for me as a Christian, it’s all small stuff to me compared to the glory that awaits as a forgiven child of God through Christ.

Hi, I am on week 6 of my SSHL, I’ve lost 100% of my left ears hearing. I was put on prednisone within 48 hours of this happening and was told there is a small chance I will regain some over the next couple of months. I am still dealing with balance issues but it’s better than it was in the beginning. It was such a quick loss that my brain is still trying to compensate, it damaged my balance center but there are exercises that you can do to retrain your brain. It was very difficult emotionally and I am still adjusting. My family had been great. I am hoping to go back to work in another week. Because of my job I didn’t trust my driving but I’m out and doing most things. The balance issues are as bad as the deafness. But I was told it would get better with time and vestibular exercises. This video is funny in a sad way. Let me summarise: I got SSHL, I took steroids, I took antivirals (which are not supported by any study), I did not take steroid inner ear shots because these are not supportes to be more effecive than orals although there is anegdotal evidence of ppl regaining hearing with shots long past due oral steroids efficacy window, I did not try hyperbaric chamber (which is supported by many studies), I did not try hearing aid to stimulate my weak ear... Praise Jesus! ... Man, you gotta love US healthcare.

The noise in my ear is what is causing me the most anxiety. Do you have any more words of encouragement regarding this? I am beginning to taper off prednisone and will see my ENT next week for audiogram and possible injections. I just started hyperbaric therapy per ENT suggestion. My loss is moderate in lowest frequency then steeply sloping to profound. Thank you for sharing your story and saying “you will adjust”. I’m impatiently waiting to adjust. Thanking God for you. Hi JR, I am now 3 yrs and 2 months in and I literally never think much of it. I sense no real loss of quality of life as I am so adjusted to anything, I do not sense a loss of anything. I am sure that is hard to believe at 12 days but trust me, the same will happen for you. I always remember though that this world is not the end. Whether hearing loss, financial loss or covid-19, I just need to trust Him through it all.

@@wildermccool1623yea idk, my ent seems to think it was caused by a viral infection and she said it was most likely that since it was right before it and on the same side as the ear that was affected. Who knows though.
I have hearing aids for SNL my left being worse, then 3 weeks ago I experienced sudden drop in right ear but couldn't get to audiologist for 2 weeks.
He said it should have been treated as an emergency but now after a round of tests I've lost 15 decibels so he's had to adjust the aids to compensate.
He did say to go to ENT or at least get on the books for next time. In my case it might be autoimmune and steroids may have helped initially.
What type of hearing aids do you use to help with SNHL?
@@drayp253 mine are resound rechargeable which I can optimise through my phone if I enter a hall, or shops or watching TV etc. They are a few years old now and the only thing it missed was connecting to ipad or tablets but I did get the gizmo that helped that. In Australia the government does help with costs for seniors but they were still expensive. I think they were $5k I paid $3k.
Also if my tinnitus is really bad the aids do help.

No, I can’t say it’s better. I think the coping just comes naturally as you adjust everyday to the new reality. It takes time. Each person will be different due to how they’ve been affected. Hope you’re ok.

I am deaf left ear 20 years and now my right ear is being attacked with deaf episodes and I only had 60% hearing in the right ear. So I’m not too positive because I wonder when the next attack will happen a month a year or never. I now have to wear a hearing aid always that how bad the right has become
Mine occured in mid december, i sought treatment on dec 26th. 2 weeks pred, now 4th cort injection today. Most likely i waited too long. Its only the left, i have lost the bads decibels and has been very hard on me......i am trying natural remedies. Ues, it felt like clogged ear for a week and the hearing got worse. It has leveled, dont know that i will receive any further help.
A hearing aid will be the next step, i am 45. Thank God the right is ok still.

Hi, so I was sitting on the couch and for about a minute I heard a ringing in my right ear and during that time i lost hearing in that ear, but after the minute I could hear again, now maybe 2 hours after this i feel a dull pain in that ear. Is this sshl or something else??
KingDragon777 I don’t know but I would consider going to your doctor to discuss it. If he doesn’t know what SSHL is then I’d go to an ENT. The earlier the diagnosis and treatment the better. Maybe it’s just an infection. See a doctor.

I've just learned to deal with it, i did gain some hearing back. Prednisone got me really sick, angry and i lost a lot of weight when i was on it. MRI results came back negative for any Acoustic Nueromas or brain tumors.

CUBAMEX its been 3 years. I have bouts of anxious dizzieness at times, random tinnitus flares in the affected ear. It is much more tolerable now. I am diagnosed with TMJ. Im still in the process of figuring it out still. I have gotten a little better.
@@jacobdalton6868 its funny you mention tmj ...i suffer from that too. In fact, the day before i experienced my sudden hearing loss, i was feeling a little tightness on my jaw, ( where the ear is) and i tried popping it to see if i can get relief like i normally did. However this time when i tried popping it.....it felt completely different from any other time. It was difficult to pop but i popped it and knew at that point that perhaps i may have caused damage...not to my ear, but to my jaw.
Well, next morning ....i had no hearing from my right ear...i had bad vertigo and nausea and it pretty much went downhill from there. I asked my ent if it could have anything to do with my jaw popping and he said no
My story is way worse, but there is hope. I had SSHL over the course of 5 years once a week at least - always with recovery but of course it would lead to a lot of tinnitus. My advice: Take plenty b12 injections (i take 1ml a week) of hydroxocobolamin (which is the only version of b12 you should be looking for). Doctors didn’t help. If you have SSHL i can guarantee you: you don’t need to see a doctor because a doctor will not do anything helpful at all - they lack the knowledge. It’s there in science articles but for some reason it doesn’t seem to be anything doctors would learn about these days.

I am recently diagnosed with otosclerosis. Hope anyone help me how can I improve my hearing condition without surgery or hearing aids.

Actually my cholesterol had been bad for several years prior to this. A year ago I actually was diagnosed with CAD and now with the help of Lipitor my cholesterol is under control. No improvement in hearing now though.
@@wildermccool I’m wondering if there is truly a link. I’m going to a neurologist now. I’ve heard ear stroke as a cause. My LDL and triglycerides have always been high.

I am training, or my brain is to use the full right ear to compensate for the left. I hear treble in the left, lower volume, but it does have some capacity.
Try doing binaural and hair cell repair forced RUclips videos. I am doing that.

It was the sneezes
I argued with the ENT. Deep down I suspect it was the sneezes. Nevertheless, there is nothing they can do. The MRI did not show any structural damage that might have resulted from a forcible sneeze. If I kept looking for a doctor willing to go in there and see if they could find/fix any damage, it is probably more likely that my hearing could be lost completely or the tinnitus would be much worse or I could have persistent dizziness issues. I have grown accustomed to how I hear and the grace of God is sufficient for me to deal with it. Thanks for commenting.
@@wildermccool the reason why I decided to look up sshl was because 5 or 10 minutes after sneezing, I experienced near complete hearing loss in my left ear. There was an intense ringing, and my hearing came back completely 5 to 10 seconds later. This has happened to me before and I never think much about it because it always comes back. I'd say it happens to me a couple times a year. Do you think this is sshl? Should I see a doctor? I'm a musician and I'm only 22. It scares the life out of that apparently, people suddenly lose their hearing and never get it back. Thanks for your response!
Do you regret not getting the injections?
@@lucid685 No. All the research said that as long as you could stomach the oral prednisone the injections showed no better results. Lots of studies showed that and my ENT said the same thing.

Not joking, this happened to me and I was told it is also a side effect of viagra. Just throwing that out there. They call it viagra deafness. I'm 60 years old by the way. Good luck to you.
Never heard of that. I’ve never taken viagra. So different for me.
