society of the snow is also based on the book by the same name! it's about the 1972 plane crash in the andes, and the survivors' experience during those 3 months. highly recommend both the movie and the book!

You really get to hear from each of the survivor's perspective and motives in some cases. What was going on in their minds, etc. I really recommend it.
@@saraloveslfci read the book and didn't watch it yet, but i can say it brings the real story as well as the survivors' perspectives of it at the same time, which makes it really emotional at times. you get to know their roles a bit better, and it definitely is the best book about the tragedy in my books
The society of the snow is also a movie adaptation. The book has the same name and we get to know more about the victims of the accident. I highly recommend it.

I read ‘Erasure’ for a module at uni and it’s an all time fave. I didn’t even realise it had been adapted because they changed the name, but I’d love to see it
I’ve read most of those books - the only one I have yet to read is the first one. Zone of Interest is quite different because in the film they used the real family. Gives the movie a sense of potency. I love American Prometheus - such a weighty biography that deep dives into the life of Oppenheimer where the film interweaves between three events/time periods. Killers of the Flower Moon focuses more on the family and less on the investigation. Preferred the Spielberg version of The Colour Purple. You didn’t mention Society of the Snow which is about the 1972 Andes crash. Again the book gives more detail as you’re condensing 72 days into two hours. But highly recommend both. Most of these you can watch the film then read the book later.
Poor Things is a great book. I read it on my degree and really enjoyed it. I’m sure there’s a term for this kind of book but it’s a book that really tries to convince you that it’s actually a true story.

It's not that long, the cinematography is exceptional (also has a termal camera night shot) and the subject was a real event from a horrible time in history. We should not forget the past so that we won't repeat it! At the same time, dealing with a gut punch subject, the movie does not show the horrors. Truly a masterpiece!

It’s a beautiful lesbian story and so poetic! I think you might really like it! I also think “gone girl” is a great psychological character study! :)

I think on average, films aren't getting longer, it's just that people are now so used to watching tiktoks, reels and youtube shorts that their attention span is getting shorter. But there is the occasional long film, and 3.5 hrs IS definitely a long film.
I think adaptation covers any previous IP. There are so many Barbie books and movies already out there it makes sense for them to consider it one. It doesn't necessarily have to be from a book to be an adaptation.
I love when people who know nothing about making movies confidently say "this could've been 20 minutes shorter" lmao Killers of the Flower Moon is longer than average but so worth the time, one of the best movies of 2023. I feel bad for anyone who missed out on seeing it in theaters... it really felt like one of those that's meant to be seen on the big screen with the full effect of the sound design, and it helps when you're forced to give it your uninterrupted attention and can't pause or glance at your phone like a lot of us would be tempted to at home. I don't get how you can have the attention span to read over 100 books a year but not to just sit and look at a screen for 3 hours lol
You def should read the Oppie book. It’s not only well written but also there is sosososo much more to know about Oppenheimer and the history of the atomic bomb
I hadn't realised that All of Us Strangers was the Taichi Yamada book until last week when I went to see if there were any novels of his I hadn't read (yes, I Haven't Dreamt of Flying in a While). I was shook to discover that the book inspired the film and now I absolutely have to see it. I also learned that Taichi Yamada died last year which is also very sad.
i’m late to the party but I watched killers of the flower moon three times now and in my opinion it was really worth it. Will I watch it again, was it my favorite movie? probably not… but it was such an emotional movie and watching lilly gladstone felt like a present from heaven!! such an educating und thought provoking movie
With poor things I both loved the book and the movie for different things, the adaptation was unique to the director and he took, in my opinion, a different direction from the book. Nonetheless I thought both of the pieces of media/entertainment I consumed were good. I loved the book and the movie, although their connection is a bit weaker than expected. Both still were brilliant.
I watched American fiction, not knowing it is an Oscar nominee. At the end, it says that it's based on a novel - of course I added it instantly to my tbr. With the story within the story situation, I am really interested how that is done in the novel. I think the book was published quite a while ago, so I'm interested if in the movie, there were many changes compared to the novel to reflect more recent events. Also, I highly recommend the movie. I laughed out loud several times, while some scenes were heartbreaking
Well I would largely agree if you've seen the movie or show about a real event you don't need to read the book however my exception has and always been We Own This City while I mostly liked the show the book has so many details that have stuck with me, also I think the book does a better job of keeping the events in an order that's easier to follow.

I’ve read David Grann’s work before - he writes fiction like a novel! I read The Wager and couldn’t put it down or stop talking about it. Gasped at every twist and turn. He has a knack for showing you that real life really IS stranger than fiction. I never knew how attached a could be to sailors from the 17th century. Real housewives has nothing on those sailors’ drama.

So, the dog in Anatomy of a Fall wouldn't get a best ensemble Oscar because the category being introduced in a few years is not about the actors, it's about the Casting Director. Therefore, the person in charge for choosing the cast will get the Oscar. ;)

I love adaptations of books in Oscar history especially in the 20th Century. Of course, there were (and still are) barriers in casting and lack of age gap discourse. The most botched up adaptation was ‘The Good Earth’.
Erasure is an amazing book. If you want to get even more out of it, you can read Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man first, but it's not necessary. I refuse to believe a movie adaptation could be better, absolutely refuse. With Percival Everett, I feel like you should start with whichever book of his you have at hand that interests you.
So interesting hearing you read the synopsis of the book Zone of Interest - the movie is not even remotely similar (the movie is excellent). Killer of the Flower Moon (the book) is on my list as I thought the movie was very good.

I saw criticism of the Poor Things adaptation that said the book is like a metaphor about Scottish Nationalism and the film just cuts that out entirely, making it an entirely different thing.

It's so disturbing that back in the day they would not feed the dog actors until they "performed" and only then food was given as a reward. Animal cruelty is horrendous. Hopefully, times are better, at least for animal actors. That dog deserves the award!! They should totally have a dog Oscar!
because most people who choose not to go only do so because of stigma and not cus they actually don’t like musicals. It’s just a trend to hate them right now. As a musical fan it does suck to see things not being marketed as they are but as we saw from wonka, this method works for some reason. And if i have to deal with that marketing in order to still get musicals i’m ok with that. I think the Wicked movies are gonna be a good test because everyone is going in knowing it’s a musical.
American fiction honestly fell flat for me in terms of pacing, character development, and even writing sometimes so I’m excited to read the book and see if how it compares!

A lot of the cast is Osage and even off camera lot of the crew and consultants were Osage as well. The credit individually names many people.

The book is so different from the movie. The movie is exceptional, the way was shot, but the topic is horrific, but real historical and tough. Everyone should watch it!

The film team has said several times their intention wasn't a faithful adaptation but to do their own thing.
