One of the finest Smiths songs, played it to my 15 year old daughter and it blew her mind. Out went One Direction and in came The Smiths. Thank you boys.
This is right up there with "Well I Wonder" and "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" as one of my favorite songs by The Smiths. This song is amazing geniusness.
I remember in high school when this came out...there were people that were obsessed with Bon Jovi, people that were obsessed with Poison, and people who were obsessed with George Michael. But me and my pack of friends loved The Smiths and would always sneak in some of the "Louder Than Bombs" songs on the stereo at parties...especially "Panic", Shoplifters" and this one
Yes, those good old 80s high school parties. Crashing those were so much fun because we and my friends would also take over the record / cassette player. The next thing everyone knew Sex Pistols, Cult, Killing Joke, and The Smiths would be blaring through the speakers! Those were some fun times! 😁
For Smiths aficionados. A song written about their then Rough Trade boss Geoff Travis who when questioned by Morrissey about their lack of promotion for the brilliance The Smiths were consistently putting out replied with the phrase of this song title.
the year is 2008, I bought the smiths greatest hits, I used to walk in the ice cold winter at 5am to my job listening to this song thinking that things will get better
I love it when Moz uses this line on the song Paint a Vulgar Picture !!! First time I heard someone quoting he’s own song on another one of he’s songs, pure genius !
Another case is Sting and his song "Seven Days" 😀 He used the line from his earlier song when he was with The Police ("Every Little Thing She Does is Magic") 😄
Hilary Hancocks Hilary you’ve made my day, just when I thought that I knew everything about Moz and the Smiths, bam ! Someone like you brings me an awesome fact like that, if it’s true, that’s a cool ass origin story. From what I gather from Morrissey and especially, Frankly Mr Shankly, Geoff truly was a pain in the ass ‘
The Smiths are among my most favorite musical groups of all time--their melodies are engaging and the lyrics are truly poetic. This song is a particular favorite as it is has been the anthem of my life since 1987. 🙂
There's a Smiths song that you can apply to every trial in life. Where would I be today without this band? Went through hell in my 20s, and I didn't think I would make it. Morrissey was was.. "You just haven't earned it, yet." Give it some time, and you'll get there.
If you're wondering why All the love that you long for eludes you And people are rude and cruel to you I'll tell you why I'll tell you why I'll tell you why I'll tell you why You just haven't earned it yet, baby You just haven't earned it, son You just haven't earned it yet, baby You must suffer and cry for a longer time You just haven't earned it yet, baby And I'm telling you now If you're wondering why When all I wanted from life was to be famous I have tried for so long, it's all gone wrong I'll tell you why I'll tell you why I'll tell you why I'll tell you why But you wouldn't believe me You just haven't earned it yet, baby You just haven't earned it, son You just haven't earned it yet, baby You must suffer and cry for a longer time You just haven't earned it yet, baby And I'm telling you now I'll tell you why I'll tell you why Today I am remembering the time When they pulled me back And held me down And looked me in the eyes and said You just haven't earned it yet, baby You just haven't earned it, my son You just haven't earned it yet, baby You must stay on your own for slightly longer You just haven't earned it yet baby And I'm telling you now You just haven't earned it yet, baby Oh, oh You just haven't earned it yet, baby Oh Oh Oh Oh

Always been one of my favourite Smiths songs ever since I was 11yrs old and heard those infectious guitar riffs of this song bellowing from the vinyl record player coming from my older brothers bedroom in 1987. I loved it instantly, the very next day I went into primary school and asked if I could start guitar lessons. Had my first guitar lesson that day and there’s rarely been a day ever since that I’ve not picked up a guitar and played whether it be for 5mins or 5hours. I remember that day like it was last week and I’m so glad it happened as has given me the beauty and wonderful skills of being a musician/producer/engineer, playing guitar, keyboards, piano, vocals, drums, percussion, saxophone and others. It’s given me various jobs in the music industry over the last 30yrs, sound technician, road crew, guitar technician. And playing in my band for years, guitars, lead vocals and keys, songwriting and recording and producing all our own songs and the amazing feelings you get playing live playing our own songs in an immense feeling when on stage that you don’t really get from anything else in life. Basically it’s given me a huge variety of skills in music and many other areas in life. Plus a great knowledge and live of music. The musical influence from Johnny Marr’s beautiful individual melodic guitar playing unlike any other guitarist and the understanding and depths of writing meaningful lyrics from the amazing lyrics and vocals of Morrissey, it’s shaped my life into what it is today for that I am eternally grateful and so happy I fell in love with the songs of The Smiths at such a young age. And now my son is a young adult and also loves The Smiths and singing and playing guitar is a truly wonderful thing to be able to pass on. And living Manchester my son, myself, my mates from my band all try and go to The Smiths Disco every month at The Star and Garter in Manchester City centre for great nights out singing and dancing all night to The Smiths.
they go deeper than that: if you want love you have to earn it. If people are cruel and rude to you for no reason: you have to earn a different behavior. Basically, if you're a loser you've brought it on yourself.
Even tho it was the Kristy MacColl version in the film and on the soundtrack, this song always makes me think of the film She's Having a Baby. Lyrics were a perfect fit for the film.
When your crush is going out with you after you told them you are in love with them. There they kiss you and now you want them even more but you already really fear losing them and now they didn´t find time to meet you in a few days and you really struggle to pass the time without them.
I was introduced to this through a program syndicated on US radio called, "Rock Over London." The show played A-side singles every week, but chose one week to play this, the B-side of "Shoplifters of the World Unite." I prefer it to the song it's backing.
The Smiths were so good (and prolific) that this didn't even make it to a B-side. Just included a couple of months later on The World Won't Listen (and then Louder Than Bombs).
If you ever run into an incel, just point them to this song. It will help them in so many ways, most of all it will likely improve their musical taste.
This is slightly different than the version I have of this song, with the most notable difference being at around the three minute mark with the high note. Anyone know what's up with that?
