the phrase "keep me in mind" is just so powerful. because no one ever asks, "remember me" or "think of me in the darkest hour of the night when you don't know who to go to". all everyone ever wants is to be "kept in mind", because to someone who's stopped expecting to be someone's first choice, just being kept at the back at someone's mind, that shows that you're not nothing, and can be lifesaving.
@Sasha - So true. Also that hope that she completely hasn’t forgotten ‘you’…. Although it’s been over six painful long years… that hope of “keep me in mind” and “gasping-dying”; breathing hurts ; sooo much when ‘you’ never had closure… it hurts so much….

This song, just shows how the smiths have mastered the emotion of desperation, in both sound and words. That “please keep me in mind” is just a request, it’s a plea. The speaker is begging to not only be seen, but to be spoken to, to simply be noticed during a dark lonely period in his life. Amazing.

WIW is an under-appreciated (and oft-overlooked) classic. In my humble opinion, this is without doubt one of the best songs in the entire Smiths catalogue. Morrissey's vocal and lyric is heart-wrenching, and delivered with both heavy emotion AND restraint- a very difficult thing to achieve. Andy Rourke's bass part is astonishing- I get the feeling that his main bass riff is central to the song's overall existence. Moerover, it's what Rourke DOESN'T play that makes his part so memorable.- the beginning of the first verse being a great example. The 'Meat Is Murder' LP was recorded in late 1984 (and released in Feb '85)- co-writer, guitarist and producer Johnny Marr was only 21 years old, and his production is nigh-on perfect. The mix is broad, crisp and immediate- hats off to both Marr and Stephen Street, who- as far as I can tell,- mixed the album together, with some input from the other band members. Everything sounds great, with the slight exception of the snare drum- to my ears, at least. Perhaps it could come down in level by 3 or 4 db, and perhaps tuned slightly higher for a more lively 'ring'. It might've added some brightness overall, but it's a minor complaint. The extensive use of acoustic guitars on this song really makes it stand out on 'Meat Is Murder'. The subtle use of volume swells on the electric guitar parts, deliberately back in the mix, underneath the acoustics- is a genius move. The ambience track, the rain... just brilliant. Regarding the ending, personally I could listen to that outro for another minute and a half or so, with a slow grand fade- in much the same vein as 'Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others'... yet I admit, I love it just as it is! They just don't make records like this anymore! DJH ; )

My wife told me about Rourke’s death this morning, and I said … he’s the guy who played my favorite bass line ever. I pulled up this song, and she said she forgot how much she loved it. 🙌
“This is the final stand, of all that I am” It’s a final plea for affection to be returned. I’ve been there before and it’s heartbreaking and yes you hope she keeps you in mind. Almost like she has an epiphany of what she could have but you have to learn to let it go and move on. It keeps you in bondage from potentially meet someone else
this song perfectly encapsulates what it's like to be desperately in love with your best friend and it's a rainy day and you just really want them to look up one day and see that you're not just an amazing friend. you just want them to keep you in mind

I have a very potent memory of this song, when I first started college. I was a very frightened awkward freshman who didn’t really know how to act on their own or interact with others. Everything was new to me, and wandering around a giant building going to classes frightened me. I remember listening to this each morning when I had to get up super early for my Mondays and Wednesdays and sometimes there’d be a sort of gloom over the campus, somewhat rainy and foggy. Each day, I’d try to build up a little bit of my courage each day to speak up more in my classes and think and act more for myself. This song reminds me of a lot that. I kinda miss college now.
The Smiths introduced me to the best period of my life in Manchester. It will never come back. Evenings with friends, grabbing a beer or two in pubs, listening to rock music. Miss those days, specially when listening to the smiths.
The band of my life. Loved them as a teenager in 84 and love them still. They spoke to me, moved me and saved me. R.I.P. Andy Rourke. You will never know just how important you were in my life. 💔
De las primeras que escuche de the smiths y sigue siendo tan poderosa, te smiths no solo es una banda sino también es un consuelo para muchos de nosotros
I will never forget the first time I heard this song - it was 1985, I was at university and we were on a road trip cruising through into a beautiful part of NZ called Leigh as the shadows were starting to appear and getting longer, due to the sun was going down in the early evening. We were listening to the new Smiths, Meat is Murder album and this song was playing! Had to rewind it again on the car cassette deck! I was 20 yrs old and have never forgotten that moment!
The Smiths had some amazing b sides, this being one of them. I still have all my 7" and 12" collection of vinyl Smiths records, safely packed away in relatively pristine condition. They were a huge part of my youth and will remain a part of my life, until my dying day.

Please, keep me in mind
[Outro]
Well, I wonder
Well, I wonder
Please, keep me in mind
Oh, keep me in mind
Keep me in mind
I keep listening again and again and I think I can never fully grasp the beauty of this melody, of this lyric. this song is indescribably beautiful.

RIP Andy. This was always my favorite of your deeply inventive work.
No one on earth and produce music like this...
Only the Smiths .
The magic of Andy Rourke's bass on this song. Just perfect.
One of the most poignant and beautiful songs i've ever heard.❤
De las primeras que escuche de the smiths y sigue siendo tan poderosa, te smiths no solo es una banda sino también es un consuelo para muchos de nosotros
It’s 2024. Never have The Smiths been more important. Such beautiful lyrics ❤❤❤
Will always love the smiths for helping me through the hardest times with their music. They are the best
RIP Andy! You made this song deep and powerful!
You people are so amazing that leaves these texts. I love all of you and you all are so glorified. It’s so beautiful to hear from you. Keep it up.
My favorite Smith’s song!! Been listening for over 30 years!
Ah, this song... ❤
Bruno Belo yes... this song... ❤️
The Smiths had some amazing b sides, this being one of them. I still have all my 7" and 12" collection of vinyl Smiths records, safely packed away in relatively pristine condition. They were a huge part of my youth and will remain a part of my life, until my dying day.

This is by far my favourite song by the smiths
Though when I was younger it would not have made my top 10 smiths songs
as I get older I have fallen in love with this haunting beautiful melody
same here, listening to the smiths for 20 years and this song floats to the top as one of my favorites.

Most underrated Smiths album and i love strangways ♥️
That magical moment, at 3:19, when the music just merges deliciously together, it's simply flawless
One of many beautiful bass lines by Andy Rourke. We'll keep you in mind.
I'll just leave this comment here and whenever someone likes it I'll be reminded of this masterpiece
And another comment.

Top 10 song by the Smiths
@@JimLagocki Yes & yes.
there's something absolutely magical about the way Morissey sings "gasping, dying" just... shivers...
2:52 I absolutely love the note drop at ''mind''
So genuinely melancholic..As if he sings with his soul..
The guitar on this is euphoric! 😍
I'm forever soaked to the bone by that rain.
_one of my favorite smiths songs for sure, here after a heart break of seven years...._
Bro, u all right? That's a pretty long time dude
This young guy on the cover of this beautiful LP will be around forever. Immortalised.
Love this song always.
I've heard it said Morrissey is The Voice of a Generation, I say Voice of a Century.
His talent serves a divine purpose, so grateful it happened in my time.
☮️
Ahhhh! What can I say. The Smiths....The best band ever.
So true!
This is seriously one of my favorite songs of theirs. It’s very relaxed but it still touches you.
Rest In Peace Andy Rourke, The Bassist Of The Smiths. I can't believe he died. I love the Smiths very much and today we lost such a great player today. RIP
An instrumental masterpiece. Like most of their songs.
My favorite from the Smiths to this day❤️
