*I cannot believe it... I finally found this f**king song!* Ever since I was 5 years old, I’ve been trying to search this song... but I literally mean this, I’ve spent over *5.5 thousand days* looking for this song. No f**king joke, i’ve spent every single day of my entire childhood and teenage years i’ve been trying to search for this tune. It sounds like i’m over exaggerating, but this is honesty something that has been pounding in the back of my head for over a decade. Ironically, last month I heard this song played at a pizza shop, and tried to Shazam it, but it was too low to pick it up. Then it played a month later at a coffee roaster shop, and it was loud enough to pick it up on my phone, and I FINALLY FOUND! My 15 years of searching for this song has finally come to an end, my stress is honestly, and literally no more! I kid you not, i’ve tried remaking the instrumentals, spent years looking up accordion like tunes just to find this song. I’m so relieve... that’s is honestly all I can say. Thank you :,)
I was 21 in 83' when this song came out. I bought Soul Mining in 84' and listened to it all through my Navy days. I wore that cassette out. 36 years later and it still sounds as good as when I first heard it on my local college radio station.
You what Kevin, the world needs more people like you. They call us boomers but we're Generation X kids meaning we were exposed to the best music not the shit that the kids are exposed to now.Soul Mining is a timeless album.God bless Kev wish you all the best.
Was 14 or 15 when I got into this song. Now 52 and the radio still goes full volume when this is played. Really helped me learn to accept small successes in my life. Took me a while to realize every day is the day!
Traveled with a casette and walkman all over the world, this was my fav song. Still brings tears to my eyes. So nice to read everyone's feelings about this song. It's brilliant. That melancholic accordion riff, very few songs have violins or accordion. Beautiful.
Thanks, man. I needed that. "Every day is the day." I've been desperately awaiting that epic moment when they all have been and, Lord-willing, will be.
I found it dad, the song that came on the radio the neighbor was listening to that time we were sitting on the front porch. I couldn't remember any lyrics until I heard it in a dream about you. It was the first time I felt a real connection with you and it was for some weird random song we accidentally heard. It was also the first time we had a beer together and the first time you put your arm around me and told me you were proud of me. It was all I ever wanted to hear my whole life. It was also the last time I talked to you in person and you were awake. I don't know if you know about me posting this or can read it but it feels good to say it. I miss you.
ahhh your comment has touched me deeply and makes me want to cry. more than that, it makes me want you to know that things happen "as they are meant to" and yes, you are still connected, and always will be. We all are connected, and part of a bigger picture. be strong and be well.
My father showed me this song. He listened to this like 20 years ago when he worked in Finland as student. Thank you dad for teaching me what the real music is.
The The is one of the most underrated overlooked bands out there. Matt Johnson. Is a musical genius. I had the privilege of seeing them in New Orleans at Tipitina’s. I’ve seen a lot of shows however this is by far one of the best things that I have ever seen. Look deep. Their music is forever.
I was working at the Watergate Hotel back in the early 90's Matt Johnson was not able to find his room, because who ever gave him his room key forgot to write the room number. I was able to get him to his room and told him that I really liked his music. He made sure to leave two tickets to see him live that night. It was really a nice gesture from such a down to earth artist with so much talent.
Nigel Kennedy, Plácido Domingo , Isaac Stern ,Jean Pierre Rampal were regulars at the hotel . Keith Richard’s and Meatloaf were so down the Earth . The guy from the Eagles Don Henley came across as a total conceited prick but I may be wrong. That Hotel was a great place in the 90 ‘s .Sumner Redstone would always stay in the two bedroom Presidential suite and pay rack rate for the tax expenses.
My dad always had music playing in our house. But when he heard this song, he always stopped what he was doing to dance to this song. I remember being a little girl, and my dad grabbing me and putting my feet on top of his, and he danced us around the room, picking me up and swinging me around. It was the best feeling.
I grew up listening to radio playing music not in a loop...this was one song. And...the cure doing the unstuck... Ask your dad what a mix tape was lol This was on " don't give up mix"
My dad introduced this song to me and my siblings as kids. He has great music taste like Billy Bragg, The Pogues, Bob Marley and The Smiths and I gotta say, this is one of my favorite needle drops. Thank you James Gunn. Its such a beautiful song about nostalgia, living in the moment and gratitude.
I just watched 'Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol.3, i never dreamed I'd hear a 'The The' song in a Marvel movie. James Gunn, thank you, i hope the millions who watch your movie appreciate one of the greatest songs ever written. ❤🎸✌
Watching Rocket Racoon singing along to one of my all time favourite songs (that very few other people I've known have been into) was a strange but awesome thing.
One of the best songs ever. Send it to my daughter almost daily who struggles with anxiety. For good reason I believe. Gives me hope for myself and her when it feels as though all is lost. May the good Lord bless you all!
I listen to this song really often. Most of my days have been the same for the last few years. Directionless lonely and standing in my own way. Whenever I hear “your life will surely change this is the day when things fall into place” I feel a bit better, it hasn’t been that day so far but it gives me hope eachtime that it’s possible
I feel like the song is being optimistic when he says “it will surely change” but it’s also too hopeful, you know? Things might change but you might be waiting forever unless you set things in motion and make changes yourself! Just my thoughts
Groundhog Day. Nothing worse than that feeling. Change happens slowly. We just have to take little steps toward where we want to be or at least point ourselves in that direction. That’s all we can do but it’s actually a huge thing. I stand in my own way to. That’s the biggest obstacle to get past I think. Try and shove yourself out of the way😁
I listened to this song every day while getting sober after 28 years. 3 years on- still sober, still listening to it💪🏽❤️❤️❤️ *UPDATE* make that 4 years!✨😊 *Now 5 years!*
Thanks Jangles 123. Same here. Don’t wanna patronise but it really is one day at a time. And it does get easier believe me, the cravings ease and the temptation goes. Don’t be afraid to ask for help either and don’t hang out with ‘enablers’, those who want u to drink for old times sake etc. Three years is a long time but it’s really just today which becomes yesterday. Take care, stay safe and good luck, Stu X
It was early November 2020. I got the call from the hospital. My beautiful wife was going into early labour. They’d held her the night before to keep her under observation. As I drove to the hospital, this song suddenly came on to the 80’s radio station that I listen to. As I drove, I started listening to the lyrics and they really hit me! I teared up. This was the day that things were going to change. Less than 12 hours later, I became a first time father to beautiful twin baby girls. As I held them in my arms for the first time, I discovered unconditional love. It was the day that my life surely changed and things fell into place. Having and raising twins is transformational. The last two years have had their fair share of challenges, but without a doubt - the best two years of my life. I love being a father.
I hope you do everything to love that women that gave birth to your unconditional love. I hope it keeps for the duration of your life and hers and your childrens.
This song gives me chills every time. Such a beautiful reflection of hopelessness and despair, with just the right amount of irony and a little bit of hope to top it all off (but is the hope sarcastic? It's hard to tell). And the melodic complexity of it all...Just brilliant. One of my favorite songs of all time, hands down.
This was my favourite song at 24 in the 80s. I was captured by the melancholic, bittersweet atmosphere of the song and this parisian charm of the accordeon. I haven't listened to it for about 30 years but it still works....
I think this is one of the most beautiful songs I've heard. The way that the low notes resonate with the accordion and that smooth voice... perfection.
This song is in my top 50 songs of all time (and I love a lot of songs!). There are a few songs that bring tears to my eyes nearly every time I hear them, and even fewer that actually give me chills in certain parts. THIS song has the ability to do BOTH! "....but the side of you they never see is when you're left alone with the memories that hold your life together like glue." Here come the tears.
@Ishaan Oh my goodness. I can indulge you if you'd really like to know. Slave to the Rhythm (Grace Jones), Wave (Carlos Antonio Jobim covered by Oscar Peterson), Coming Up (Paul McCartney) and This Must be the Place (Talking Heads) to name a few. You?
@Ishaan Thank you - love Stepping Out, Doctor Doctor, and Freebird is a staple at any backyard BBQ, road trip, etc.. I love thinking about that, though - if you had a list of 50 top songs, what would they be? What would be in your top 10? What's the criteria? The top 50 are songs that have the ability to give me the chills/move me, and I've played 50 times or more by choice. :) Thanks for sharing some of yours!
I've listened to this song through every recent major event in my life. A depressive mental breakdown, my first real break up (who ended up dating one of my best friends), and one of my best friends committing suicide, all over the last 6 months. I'm finally swinging out of it now, but I don't think I'd be as happy as I am now without this song to help me through those rough spots. Bless you The The! 1 year anniversary edit: I was just scrolling through here, when I found this comment I had forgot I had even posted. How I felt last year feels like a world away now, it's strange, but life's been looking up ever since! Even if 2021 has been a terrible year for everyone. I'm still rocking out to this song though, so don't fret lol. 2nd year anniversary: Covid's been a pain, but I'm still hanging in there! Life has offered me more challenges since those dreadful few months 2 years ago, but what's life without a challenge, eh? In any case, The The is definitely still helping me through it all. And finally, thank you for all the kind words! Coming back and reading these replys has really helped me through alot.
I couldn’t read this comment and let it pass by. I hope you get through any hardships to the best of your ability for I know it may be tough but keep on pushing.
This song came at the perfect time for me. After listening to this for the first time while watching GOTG Vol. 3, I feel rejuvenated - full of life, hope, and love. It feels like things are going to be okay... like *I* am going to be okay. Thank you for this beautiful piece of music. It has given me the strength not to get over, but through, my struggles. This song is a reminder to push forward, to keep trying. I did not expect this song to impact me so deeply and heavily, but am and will be forever thankful it crossed my path.
I loved this song since 83/84. But the lyrics meant nothing to me until, 30 years later. That was when I lost my friends, wife and kid, family, career, money, etc, to a crippling heroin addiction. After rehab, staying clean and being left with nothing but memories, did this song suddenly have such a profound effect on me.
I listened to this song after moving out of sober living that I was at for 18months. been clean off heroin for 4 years and 6 months! keep going bro stay clean man!
It's not optimistic. He's on record as saying the 'this is the day...' line is sardonic. Still doesn't mean people can't take what they like from it though.
@@Spectrescup it has a cheery beat and a nice surface-level message (unless you think about it too much) so its a pretty happy song if you take it at face value! love songs like this, that are kinda depressing really but sound really happy and make you feel good (mostly)!
Reminds me of a similar misunderstanding of Bruce Springsteen's song "Born in the U.S.A." But here I'm ok with people putting a positive spin on this song. Isn't it the ultimate irony that a song meant to be optimistic only in a sarcastic sense has taken on a true optimistic meaning for some listeners?
Discovered the band a few years ago. It is baffling that they aren't hugely known. This album is absolutely some of the best music I have ever heard, and there is never a time I wouldn't want to hear it
A beautiful melancholy, yet hopeful and uplifting song by one of the world's greatest songwriters of all time. I first heard this track in late 1983, as an 18 y.o. in Melbourne, Australia.
The first time I heard this song was this year, it was my first night living in london and i was restless and homesick. I ended up on a bench in a random park and watched the sun rise. I put in my headphones, shuffled my recommended and this was the very first song that played. I had just made the biggest change of my life so far and I was terrified that I had made the wrong choice. I was completely alone in an entirely new country, in a huge city, thousands of miles away from everything i'd ever known. Hearing this song felt like fate, I'd never had lyrics speak to me so directly- it felt like the universe was telling me that everything would be alright. I made the right choice, I worked so hard to get here and now I could finally let go of that fear and truly start living. It felt like everything that had happened, everything I had been through was leading me to this moment on this park bench. I sat there and sobbed my eyes out hahaha. This song means more to me than i'd ever be able to put into words, I don't think I would've been able to be where I am now without it.
The first time I listened to this song I was playing GTA with some friends. I was having an argument with them. I just left the party and heard this song as I was driving. I started crying because I thought I had friends that cared about me, but in reality they were just people using me. I talked to them a week ago. And they said they were sorry.
yes, i first heard this song decades ago and it hit me like a brick wall and the opposite of that wall at the same time, like a huge opening/awareness. i couldn't stop listening, it still has the same resonants 40 years later. i can alway hear it when i need the message. this is the day.. this is the day.
My mom just passed. I'm a drunk. So was she. Life is a constant change, hang on and hang in there. Try to enjoy the ride. Don't let the downs get you too down. And don't let the highs pass you by...
I'm here with you brother, my mom passed away 3 months ago at 49 ....... I'm devastated. Never knew how taking things for granted can be so real , until it hit me right in the heart. All in all they want us smiling. They worked so hard for us to have that. We owe it to them to not lose that ❤️🩹
My ex, in his year of sobriety, played this EVERY morning when he woke up. Loved him so much. He inspired me in so many ways with his determination to have a better day, "one day at a time," fighting those demons and getting his mind/body right. If anyone is out there struggling, YOU GOT THIS! THIS is the day your life will surely change! 🎶
Every day is a struggle for everyone we just don't know it. I've had a terrible year but then I remember the 80s and 90s and things don't seem so bad, great memories, wish I could go back x
I just listened to this song, and shortly after paying attention to the lyrics, I was sobbing uncontrollably. Nobody told me that living my 20s would be this tough, I just got home from my soul-crushing dead-end job. It's not the job I wanted, it's the only one I got, I have been battling depression and hail from a long history of being abused, just trying to make it out alive seems hard enough. I think I've learned by now, that the goal in life is to live without regrets. It's easier said than done, but surely looking at things from a different perspective might help, it's all a matter of perspective or so they say. I don't know if I will make it but I still hold hope, but if there's one thing to learn is to never take anything for granted, some of you have it really good and you might not even know it, comparing yourself to others will hurt you, don't do that. Surely, this is the day.
Don’t let anybody’s expectations- including your own- keep you from enjoying the present moment. A moment you’ll never get back. You’re amazing- don’t forget it.
I'm old enough now to give advice..just be your best self and if people don't like you for no apparent reason then it's there problem, not your. Plus, check out everything The The have done. All the best. 👍
Enjoy to-day," the mother said; "Some wait for to-morrow through many a year It is always coming, but never is here." - M. B. Johnson You've learned from your past-it cannot be changed; you can only live your present. Enjoy it! It is as it says: "a present"!
I'm told that's actually pretty much what the song is about. Someone looking back and realizing they didn't live the life they wanted, and maybe they've been waiting for something to happen instead of making it happen. But time has flown by.
How right you were, when you said, "All the money in the world wouldn't bring back those days", but now isn't so bad, and here I am able to listen to your music which has been in my life for too many decades..And lots of new music...Nice one...
I’m 19, this summer (2024) my father show me this masterpiece and now im addicted to it, also now, every time I listen to this I remember him…this has became,to me, my father’s song. Love it! Life it’s great, enjoy it! Cheers guys
this song gives me hopes about the future, despite what already happened, and that you feel down about the little negative elements of life, there's still hope
This song drifted back into my life during the 2008 financial crash. I was out of work for the first time in two decades and was giving up hope of ever finding another good job. Every day I would repeat the lines "This is the day your life will surely change. This is the day when things fall into place." Then that day came when the phone rang...
The The and Talk Talk got me through some bleary, WTH am I doing days while living in Crewkerne Somerset in the early 80's. I was there from the States, going back and forth to France while selling surfboards for a CA shaper. So thankful for all of the great music in England during that time period but this was some of the best! 63 years old now and still love this music.
The musical group "The The " .. has always been great therapy ( through the years) for my personal internal fight with the disgusting misogynistic thoughts, ( cos in my case I fell in love with my abusers) I had about my interactions and relationships, and my environment... So now I've reached the stage where I continue to strive in being a better + more caring, empathetic man, and a better human being. ( You live with the night tremors and flash-backs from events from over 40yrs ago on a daily basis. But you know what? You are a better person than your dreams)🙏
I’ve been looking for this exact song for 40 years since I fell in love with it in high school, but didn’t know who sung it. Thanks Guardians of the Galaxy 3!
I was 18 y.o. when this song found me. I was living abroad on my own for the first time in my life and felt so free and independent. Sometimes I was feeling melancholic, but when I was feeling good and optimistic I always played this song. "This is the day your life is gonna change", while I was making coffee and looking out of the window, I really felt this lyrics!
Really? 6 mil views is "underrated" to you? Listen to Nathan Whitey's work, that's where underrating starts. No seriously, he's great, and this song sounds a lot like what Whitey himself would do
Lyrics: Well you didn't wake up this morning 'cause you didn't go to bed You were watching the whites of your eyes turn red The calendar on your wall was ticking the days off You've been reading some old letters You smile and think how much you've changed All the money in the world couldn't buy back those days You pull back the curtains And the sun burns into your eyes You watch a plane flying Across a clear blue sky This is the day, your life will surely change This is the day, when things fall into place You could have done anything, if you wanted And all your friends and family think that you're lucky But the side of you they'll never see Is when you're left alone with your memories That hold your life together, like glue You pull back the curtains And the sun burns into your eyes You watch a plane flying Across a clear blue sky This is the day, your life will surely change This is the day, when things fall into place This is the day (This is the day) Your life will surely change This is the day (This is the day) Your life will surely change This is the day (This is the day) Your life will surely change This is the day (This is the day) Your life will surely change This is the day (This is the day) Your life will surely change This is the day (This is the day) Your life will surely change This is the day (This is the day) Your life will surely change This is the day (This is the day) Your life will surely change 🖤
my life is complete!!! i've had lines from this song stuck in my head for the last 25 years and I never knew who sang it. I'd google the lyrics that I remembered but nothing would come up. I was up at 4 in the morning with insomnia watching trashy netflix movies to help my head and was watching "i feel pretty" and the song came on!! Thank god I had shazam on my phone and finally got the song. I've had it on repeat for 5 days straight going from crying to feeling absolutely amazing. I got my 20 yr old daughter to listen to it and she's like no wonder you had it stuck in your head for years mum. Best best best song - it brings back all my good memories of the 80's. So many amazing lines in the song - "This is the day your life will surely change!!!"
Well, you didn't wake up this morning 'cause you didn't go to bed You were watching the whites of your eyes turn red The calendar on your wall Is ticking the days off You've been reading some old letters You smile and think how much you've changed All the money in the world Couldn't buy back those days You pull back the curtains And the sun burns into your eyes You watch a plane flying Across the clear blue sky This is the day Your life will surely change This is the day When things fall into place You could've done anything If you'd wanted And all your friends and family Think that your lucky But the side of you they'll never see Is when you're left alone with the memories? @@michaelwertzy9808 why are you so bitter? for no reason? him posting the lyrics really got you heated. maybe reevaluate your mindset? just a well thought out suggestion!
lindsay o. Some people are just assholes and bullies, they will never self reflect, just let them be the pathetic person they wanna be, they don’t care... so don’t let them disturb your peace... i know, easier said than done right... ENJOY the song, and now we can directly follow the lyrics, I’m happy :)
First heard this song one year into my teaching career, just about holding onto my sanity. The line 'all your friends and family think that you're lucky' almost brought me to tears. Complete classic.
This song reminds me of my childhood. My dad would play this song when I was a baby, he also made a cute slide show of me and my family with nice pictures with this song playing. Dang, I was like three but still remember him showing that video to me..those good old times.
When I hear first time this beauty I was 12. It was played everyday on the radio as part of a night fixed playlist. I was so addicted to this wonder that I never miss a time since, alone in the dark with my big headphones on to enjoy it fully. But I never knew artist and song name. Then the playlist changed and I lost it, and no luck to hear it again on the radio, but the melody stuck in my mind. Recently I zapped on youtube, try this. 😳😳😳 OMGGGG!!! After 40 years 🥰🥰🥰 Alone in my room, I hope nobody come in now. I am crying. The sweetest tears ever. Luckily nobody broke that holy moment thanks God. And thank you The The 💕💕💕
What an utterly wonderful song. Fiddles, accordians, synths. Upbeat yet downbeat. You could've done anything If you'd wanted And all your friends and family Think that your lucky But the side of you they'll never see Is when you're left alone with the memories? That hold your life Together like glue
@@keggs73 Uptick! Thank you for that! Totally forgot about that song. I live in Vietnam now, and that song has a totally different meaning to me now than what it did all those years ago. Pity, really. I had picked Morcheeba - The Sea as my perfect retro song for here.
This song is just so relaxing & just makes me feel good. I recall buying the TheThe album for another song but quickly fell in love with the entire album & trust me thats not easy for anyone to do.
I love this song. I remember carrying mail in a Northern suburb of Chicago, walking along with my Walkman (🤣) listening to WXRT. And my pace quickened when this song (among many other songs that WXRT played in the early 1990s) came on.
Timeless, beautiful song... makes you feel like smiling though tears... "Drops of God", the series, totally got Matt Johnson's sentiment when the added it as the end song of the story! 40 YEARS LATER!!!
Brazil here. Its like you've made this music for me at this moment of my life haha. Thank you The The. Facing depression and anxiety by myself, running away from everyone, hiding myself at my house, so I dont need to crush down everyone's expectation about me being happy and full of life, has been like a prison. I felt connect with every phrase of these lyrics, like all those things already happened to me again and again and happened to me today (besides the blue sky part haha today its cloudy) thank you guys for all the sensitivity of making this melody, lyrics, this song. Greetings from Brazil
Hola Me Also been doing it for a long time.music isALL i have and thats k .cause Mo one is gonna take it away.and that makes me smile .stay positive plz.ur not alone...a friend LIO
"...but the side of you they'll never see, is when you're left alone with your memories..." maaaaaan i can smile and cry at the same time with this :')
Thanks Matt, for the fantastic, thoughtful music. This song was always on the record deck when my days were long & our nights were even longer!! Thanks for all the memories. PEACE AND LOVE TO EVERYONE ❤❤.
This song is therapeutic AF! Could listen to it all day. ♥️ For anyone going through hard times I truly hope this is the day for you. Keep on keeping on boss! You're more of a Killa then you realize.
This song will haunt me one day. I remember listening to it when I was 17 after I got kicked out of school, smoking cigarettes in front of the fireplace drinking a bottle of wine I stole from my parents. Now pushing 30 and I still don’t know where my life is going. Good things have happened since then, but I was never present enough to truly enjoy them. God please don’t let me waste more time. I can feel the years getting shorter.
It's OK dear Robert - someone close to me is like this too - there is always today to start to really see the wonder of the world around you, this beautiful, fragile, hurt world is still so painfully stunning! xxx
I was a runner for a video duplication company in Soho, I was 16 and this song was one of the ones we were putting onto a compilation for video a jukebox, it was around 1988 and one of the guys I worked with liked this band, I was a Hip hop kid at the time but I was introduced to a lot of pop music while I worked there.I really liked this tune, it brings back a lot of nostalgic memories of another time, I time when I was innocent and naive, the future was unmapped and I was optimistic
Can you believe it: I have never heard this song before today. I just caught the end of it on the radio and got a title.. Good song. My thoughts are with the people who are hurting.
I still have this cassette. Played in 100,000 times in my '72 VW Beetle with a killer stereo that was worth 5 times the value of the car. First car. First real love. Music. Joy. Introspection. THE THE
I turn 54 this year. I have mental health problems namely depression, body dysmorphic disorder and undiagnosed avoidant personality disorder. I first heard this tune way back in 1989 and it was the best tune of that summer. I love this song now as I did back then.
I first heard this song when I moved across the country and sat down at my boring desk at my boring office job. Needless to say, my life definitely changed since then.
*I cannot believe it... I finally found this f**king song!*
Ever since I was 5 years old, I’ve been trying to search this song... but I literally mean this, I’ve spent over *5.5 thousand days* looking for this song.
Thank you :,)
Where did you hear it for the first time?

itisimpossibleto 16 years ago, when i was 5 years old, it was at a store in Canada called, Giant Tiger.
It's a shame you never saw the movie "I Feel Pretty". This song plays right near the beginning. That's where I first heard it.
This is amazing Spectrum, your story gave me a little shiver. Well done! It's an amazing song too
I was 21 in 83' when this song came out. I bought Soul Mining in 84' and listened to it all through my Navy days. I wore that cassette out. 36 years later and it still sounds as good as when I first heard it on my local college radio station.
I memorized every word in '84. Of every song .

Same, walking to work grinning ear to ear
It's been over 30 years for me and it's still amazing
Just found this song yesterday while watching a documentary of Scottish independence. There is some many great music from the past.
Awesome! Great tuuune innit?
You lucky bastard. I bought this CD when it was released and the first time I listened to it was truly a great day that changed my life.
Beautiful.
Same here, 52 too and this is still as amazing as the time I heard it first
Thanks, man. I needed that. "Every day is the day." I've been desperately awaiting that epic moment when they all have been and, Lord-willing, will be.
O TIME DOS 50 ANOS AMA ESSE SOM DO the THE... EU 51.
I love "everyday is the day" it's a great attitude and value to liveby
This song kept me alive mentally and emotionally since 1986. Bless you
James Gunn knows how to hit me with nostalgia my dad used to play this and Mr blue sky all the time
"But the side of you they'll never see is when you're left alone with the memories
that hold your life together like glue" love that line
I read that line you wrote at the exact time the dude sung it.
Yup, that's the killer line... he was only 21 years old at the time... scary.
I saw this comment at the exactly moment the song was playing this part
except, it's not glue. But "you and me"
@@Cyberhog1959 No, it's glue.
Just fantastic interplay between the accordion and fiddle. Undoubtedly one of the top 10 greatest singles of all time.
yes!
I miss you.
Just crying a little is all, don’t mind me
He knows...
How great that he got to tell you, and did!
He’s proud of you man I’m sure he is, I’m sure he is
god bless him. and you.
ahhh your comment has touched me deeply and makes me want to cry. more than that, it makes me want you to know that things happen "as they are meant to" and yes, you are still connected, and always will be. We all are connected, and part of a bigger picture. be strong and be well.
My father showed me this song. He listened to this like 20 years ago
when he worked in Finland as student. Thank you dad for teaching me what
the real music is.
Same story, now i have only 15 Years but i listen this Song from 8 years
Word , it’s a beautiful realisation when you see your parents in a different light . Very special time
The Stranglers are another band for listening pleasure
What does "real music" even mean?
djt6fan
A tad pugnaciously pedantic la, you know what he means.
Music to feed his particular soul, opposed to music that doesn’t.
And did you go?
Yes , I did and it was a great show .
Right in the fkking feels
What a beautiful memory
Your dad showed good taste in music. :D
I grew up listening to radio playing music not in a loop...this was one song. And...the cure doing the unstuck...
Ask your dad what a mix tape was lol
This was on " don't give up mix"
Yes!
Me too
Watching Rocket Racoon singing along to one of my all time favourite songs (that very few other people I've known have been into) was a strange but awesome thing.

Forgot about this brilliant song.
Guardians are great films with great music
THATS WHAT I SAID I never thought I’d ever hear this song in a movie in general
@@VitoScaletta1951I first heard this in an M&M commercial when you used to design your own M&M character back in the late 2000’s

Whenever I hear “your life will surely change this is the day when things fall into place” I feel a bit better, it hasn’t been that day so far but it gives me hope eachtime that it’s possible
yup feel the same but remember your life will surely change this is the day xxx
I know this song since the late 80. And trust me this things happen. But you have to be pantient and help them to happen 😉.
Try and shove yourself out of the way😁
love you fam
The Netflix Series ONE DAY has fantastic music. How have I lived so many decades without hearing this song ? SOOOOO GOOD
Sim .... tocou muito aqui no Brasil... são Paulo capital....
Lost a good friend today. Will remember forever her dancing this music…smiling…special…in 84…rip my sweet Paula. Love ya ❣️

I listened to this song every day while getting sober after 28 years. 3 years on- still sober, still listening to it💪🏽❤️❤️❤️ *UPDATE* make that 4 years!✨😊
*Now 5 years!*

Well done mate
Félicitations ! 👏
I just got my 1 year chip yesterday x ODAAT my friend x keep it simple x and keep coming back it works if you work it.
M8...my Mum was diagnosed with Cancer.....lost her....but this album and song sad as it is.....has personal meaning and strengh.
I hope you do everything to love that women that gave birth to your unconditional love. I hope it keeps for the duration of your life and hers and your childrens.
I wish you all the luck of this planet, fellow!
Twins!....Congratulations 💞
There is nothing like fatherhood to add some perspective to a man's life.
Everytime I listen to this song, it really does feel like I've arrived at the moment where my life will surely change, no matter how bittersweet.
I agree but I been listening to this song for decades on n off. Only when I am soul searching I find healing.
Listen to Star Fucker "Golden Light". It works.
And it doesn't change. That's the funny bit.
@@Requiredfields2 yeah. Action is the context that makes this song enjoyable.
Agree
You summed up this song and my thoughts on it so well, good effort. I like to think the hope is not sarcastic..but it could be.
This was my favourite song at 24 in the 80s. I was captured by the melancholic, bittersweet atmosphere of the song and this parisian charm of the accordeon. I haven't listened to it for about 30 years but it still works....
This wonderful song makes me cry and smile at the same time, pure genius, thank you Matt Johnson....
Agreed this guy is a visionary
Same here louise
I recomend this to anyone I come across that is having a rough couple of days, weeks, months. It has helped me and I must share it on
This song gives me goosebumps. So many memories of my teenage years. Still absolutely love it and it has stood the test of time ❤
I think this is one of the most beautiful songs I've heard. The way that the low notes resonate with the accordion and that smooth voice... perfection.
The bestest song ever
This song is in my top 50 songs of all time (and I love a lot of songs!). There are a few songs that bring tears to my eyes nearly every time I hear them, and even fewer that actually give me chills in certain parts. THIS song has the ability to do BOTH!
"....but the side of you they never see is when you're left alone with the memories that hold your life together like glue."
Here come the tears.
You?
Matt is a genius!
1 year anniversary edit:
I was just scrolling through here, when I found this comment I had forgot I had even posted. How I felt last year feels like a world away now, it's strange, but life's been looking up ever since! Even if 2021 has been a terrible year for everyone.

2nd year anniversary:
Covid's been a pain, but I'm still hanging in there! Life has offered me more challenges since those dreadful few months 2 years ago, but what's life without a challenge, eh? In any case, The The is definitely still helping me through it all. And finally, thank you for all the kind words! Coming back and reading these replys has really helped me through alot.

Keep doing it bro, just chill, everything will be okay, dont think too much ✌️
ok
Such a wonderful song. However many times I listen to it, always the same ray of sunshine that is the accordion spurting in my ears. So wonderful.
THAT'S LIFE 🤷♂️
Nailed it
I listened to this song after moving out of sober living that I was at for 18months. been clean off heroin for 4 years and 6 months! keep going bro stay clean man!
Hope your still hanging in there buddy.
May you find strength brother from all us strangers here truly meaning the best for you. From the heart.
Isn't it amazing when you see other people's perspectives on important songs from your life? I have never seen this song as optimistic
@@Spectrescup I don’t think the poster it is criticising that. Songs are so personal to people, it’s Interesting reading what it means to other people
Except I don't give a shit about other people's perspectives.
Reminds me of a similar misunderstanding of Bruce Springsteen's song "Born in the U.S.A."
But here I'm ok with people putting a positive spin on this song.
Isn't it the ultimate irony that a song meant to be optimistic only in a sarcastic sense has taken on a true optimistic meaning for some listeners?
Discovered the band a few years ago. It is baffling that they aren't hugely known. This album is absolutely some of the best music I have ever heard, and there is never a time I wouldn't want to hear it
Been listening to this for 38 years and it's never gotten old.
Brilliant track. Matt Johnson is so underrated. Glad that young GTA 5 fans can discover his music.
A beautiful melancholy, yet hopeful and uplifting song by one of the world's greatest songwriters of all time. I first heard this track in late 1983, as an 18 y.o. in Melbourne, Australia.
I would’ve heard it for the first time at around that same age, albeit it 30 years after you did. The big wheel keeps turning.
Beautiful
yes, i first heard this song decades ago and it hit me like a brick wall and the opposite of that wall at the same time, like a huge opening/awareness. i couldn't stop listening, it still has the same resonants 40 years later. i can alway hear it when i need the message. this is the day.. this is the day.
My mom just passed. I'm a drunk. So was she. Life is a constant change, hang on and hang in there. Try to enjoy the ride. Don't let the downs get you too down. And don't let the highs pass you by...
Take care brother,it’s a tough life and we all doing our best 👊🏻
It sucks. Others don’t get it. You fall into addiction and you can’t find your way out. I am healing from the.3 head injuries.

This song has a sound that was way ahead of its time. I loved it from the beginning, and I still do.
Agreed. It was so ahead of its time ❤
Yes, I've heard for first time, it's good
It was exactly it's time. Nothing has compared in the 40 years since this song
Getting nostalgia for days I never lived.
I'm told that's actually pretty much what the song is about. Someone looking back and realizing they didn't live the life they wanted, and maybe they've been waiting for something to happen instead of making it happen. But time has flown by.
This fuckin comment on every (even barely) nostalgic video 😂
Makes sense to me.
It was good, but you have the present and future. The past is only a memory.
A fair point, however, many people RELY on memories...when their “present” isn’t so pleasant &/or their “future” may be BLEAK or a mere CONCEPT.
How right you were, when you said, "All the money in the world wouldn't bring back those days", but now isn't so bad, and here I am able to listen to your music which has been in my life for too many decades..And lots of new music...Nice one...

this song gives me hopes about the future, despite what already happened, and that you feel down about the little negative elements of life, there's still hope
Hmmmmm……..
This song drifted back into my life during the 2008 financial crash. I was out of work for the first time in two decades and was giving up hope of ever finding another good job. Every day I would repeat the lines "This is the day your life will surely change. This is the day when things fall into place." Then that day came when the phone rang...
Yes!!! The mantra 😂
The musical group "The The " .. has always been great therapy ( through the years) for my personal internal fight with the disgusting misogynistic thoughts, ( cos in my case I fell in love with my abusers)
I had about my interactions and relationships, and my environment... So now I've reached the stage where I continue to strive in being a better + more caring, empathetic man, and a better human being.
( You live with the night tremors and flash-backs from events from over 40yrs ago on a daily basis. But you know what? You are a better person than your dreams)🙏

40 years is wild!
Ridiculously underrated song
Hi I recommend checking out a song called 'Where I Come From' By Robert Nix
Really? 6 mil views is "underrated" to you? Listen to Nathan Whitey's work, that's where underrating starts. No seriously, he's great, and this song sounds a lot like what Whitey himself would do
@Frank ikr? The chorus has been playing in my brain.. I finally had to look for it, couldn't recall th artist's name.
Totally agree! 58 here and still love Matt
I would say Dick this song is difficult to dance to but worth a listen.
Lyrics:
Well you didn't wake up this morning 'cause you didn't go to bed
You were watching the whites of your eyes turn red
The calendar on your wall was ticking the days off
You've been reading some old letters
You smile and think how much you've changed
All the money in the world couldn't buy back those days
You pull back the curtains
And the sun burns into your eyes
You watch a plane flying
Across a clear blue sky
This is the day, your life will surely change
This is the day, when things fall into place
You could have done anything, if you wanted
And all your friends and family think that you're lucky
But the side of you they'll never see
Is when you're left alone with your memories
That hold your life together, like glue
You pull back the curtains
And the sun burns into your eyes
You watch a plane flying
Across a clear blue sky
This is the day, your life will surely change
This is the day, when things fall into place
This is the day (This is the day)
Your life will surely change
This is the day (This is the day)
Your life will surely change
This is the day (This is the day)

This song reminds me of my childhood. My dad would play this song when I was a baby, he also made a cute slide show of me and my family with nice pictures with this song playing. Dang, I was like three but still remember him showing that video to me..those good old times.
I loved your comment. Your dad sounds like a sweet and caring person with excellent taste in music that he gave you. Very cool. 👍👏👏👏
I’m cleaning up my room after a depressive episode listening to this song
hell yeah!
At least you are honest.
🌟🌈
❤️❤️Hope you’re doing better now
I felt that
all the money in the world couldn't buy back those days
We still have the music 🎧😀
@@sonickicks Still constantly discovering great music that is 30+ years old. If anything, good music gets better with age.
I spent a good 6 weeks of last year's hot summer listening to this. Put it back on tonight....roll on summer
kenopsia that is a myth. There is great music these days, with great soul, look for it.
These are the good times. All we have is now.
And thank you The The 💕💕💕
So good to hear this again. Brings back so many memories. Some good, some bad....
Beauty and melancholy wrapped up in one perfect package.
For me also...happy en sad..feelings....with this song...i am dancing in and on live..
One of the best and most underrated songs of all time
This song is such a vibe, The perfect antidepressant
My favorite song in the world.
Uma música PR dançar e relaxar ..🥰
Olha os brs da sessão
... también es mi favorita; sólo esoooo!
Brasil sil sil
What an utterly wonderful song. Fiddles, accordians, synths. Upbeat yet downbeat.
You could've done anything
If you'd wanted
And all your friends and family
Think that your lucky
But the side of you they'll never see
Is when you're left alone with the memories?
That hold your life
Together like glue
30 years later ... when lyrics comes true ...
Right
36, but who's counting :)
So did Sweet Bird Of Truth..
@@keggs73 Uptick! Thank you for that! Totally forgot about that song. I live in Vietnam now, and that song has a totally different meaning to me now than what it did all those years ago.
Pity, really. I had picked Morcheeba - The Sea as my perfect retro song for here.
Well said.... 👏
And my pace quickened when this song (among many other songs that WXRT played in the early 1990s) came on.
this song has one of the best lyrics ever written ... touching and deep. and the sound is hypnotizing. fvcking love it!
Gotta love that Omnichord intro. The touch pad and chords are just iconic
Timeless, beautiful song... makes you feel like smiling though tears... "Drops of God", the series, totally got Matt Johnson's sentiment when the added it as the end song of the story! 40 YEARS LATER!!!
‘but the side of you they’ll never see is when you’re left alone with your memories’ wow, i never realised how sad this song is before
Brazil here.
You’re going to Brazil.
Was that the day your life surely changed?
Foda

We are the Brasil 🇧🇷
You caught the groove with this.. that simple bass line & syncopated accordion groove thing.. great vocal vibe - sentimental serendipity ~ Peace
"...but the side of you they'll never see, is when you're left alone with your memories..." maaaaaan i can smile and cry at the same time with this :')
Timeless. Heard it before I’ve heard it. Thank you for this amazing song
felt this so hard lol
I can't believe guardians of the galaxy used this song. Another reason to come looking for it once again.
Yeah i come here after watch the movie 🤓🤓
I was so happy when I heard this song in the movie... ❤

Pure childhood nostalgia just knocked the door of my heart and of my mind!

Ah 17 ans ! quel splendide album, que j'ai en cd et écouté en boucles avec mes amis !!! whoua ça manque des groupes comme ça !!!!!
This song is therapeutic AF! Could listen to it all day. ♥️ For anyone going through hard times I truly hope this is the day for you. Keep on keeping on boss! You're more of a Killa then you realize.
Underrated band this whole album needs more recognition
This song will haunt me one day. I remember listening to it when I was 17 after I got kicked out of school, smoking cigarettes in front of the fireplace drinking a bottle of wine I stole from my parents. Now pushing 30 and I still don’t know where my life is going. Good things have happened since then, but I was never present enough to truly enjoy them. God please don’t let me waste more time. I can feel the years getting shorter.
It's OK dear Robert - someone close to me is like this too - there is always today to start to really see the wonder of the world around you, this beautiful, fragile, hurt world is still so painfully stunning! xxx
I can relate so so much.. In a weird eery kinda way...
One of the greatest most underated songs of all time.
That M&Ms commercial from around 2007 or so is what led me to this song. And it has been on a playlist where I work at recently as well.
Hang in there my friend
I first heard this song when I moved across the country and sat down at my boring desk at my boring office job. Needless to say, my life definitely changed since then.
The poetry back in the days is so untouchable. ❤️❤️❤️
Underrated band. My dad had one of their albums and a t-shirt for this band. This is nostalgia.
The most perfect start to the day...
