  • In this video I'm going to show you how to troubleshoot some of the issues you might be having with your Porsche 924 and 944 passenger side window. Typically there are three situations, one where the neither switches operate the window, another where the drivers switch operates the window, but the passenger switch does not, then also a situation where the passenger side switch works but the drivers switch doesn't. I will be showing you what is causing these issues and how to fix all three!

    This video was great. I was trying to figure out the window switches in my early 85 944 yesterday. Passenger window would only work by pushing both switches simultaneously. 17 years with a 944 and didn't know there was a "correct" orientation to the contacts inside. Everything works now. Thanks !

    Previous owner of my 924S went further... instead of fixing the switch configuration so the driver's switch will operate the passenger window, they just cut and spliced the wires so the passenger window would work. Just not the driver's side switch being able to operate the passenger window. I guess they were ok with leaning over to press the passenger window switch.

    My 1985 V2 electric windows where working perfectly, but this morning go figure my wife’s first ride, the passenger switch only works going down now, but the driver side switch is able to drive up/down the passenger window. Weird. Again the passenger door switch only now allows down. Could it be that when she slammed the door shut for the first time something happened. This is such an educational channel.

    • @edredas
      @edredas  4 года назад

      Could be corrosion in the switch. May have been making good contact until it was used then made a bad connection. I see something like this quite a bit. Sometimes just opening them up carefully and cleaning them will help.

    Thank you for your help! I’ve got my passenger side window working but have determined that one switch doesn’t work. All contacts clean and correct. The bad switch was blowing a 25amp fuse but now cleaned and put back together it doesnt blow the fuse anymore but still dorsnt work. New switch?

    • @edredas
      @edredas  2 года назад

      If that one switch doesn't work when you plug it into the drivers window socket then it should be replaced. I personally haven't had much luck buying new switches since they are designed differently than the originals. So I often replace them with original ones from a breaker or junkyard and clean them up to get them working.

  • @jackallen6261
    @jackallen6261 7 лет назад

    German engineering! Gotta love it!! Why they didn't run power to each switch separately and an additional two wires from the drivers side door... I already have one of your shirts and I have to comment on that, very nice quality shirt! Keep up the good work!!

    • @edredas
      @edredas  7 лет назад

      Good question! Because if the driver decided to put the window up when the passenger wanted it down, it would blow the fuse. Wiring it like this means that the driver switch overrides the passenger switch! I hope the helps!

    • @edredas
      @edredas  3 года назад +1

      Yup! Also be sure to check the power at the plug to make sure you have battery voltage there. That could indicate that the motor isn't getting enough power through the switches. Once that is done you can grease everything up and don't forget to remove the motor and grease the shaft. Good luck!

    Another great video. What I think would be a great video and might get quite a few views would be a buyers guide. I really enjoy your videos and have learned quite a bit by watching them. I will soon be buying my first 944 and know about timing belts and such but what would really be helpful is what to look out for when purchasing one. For example are there things specific to the 944/924s to pay more attention to. Just a suggestion. I can't find anything like this on RUclips. In any event please keep posting these and thanks.

    • @edredas
      @edredas  7 лет назад

      I'll see what I can do! The belts and the clutch are perhaps the two common issues that would cost the most money to fix. I'm sure I could do a video on what to look for. A lot of these cars have been neglected, resprayed, stripped down or repaired by ham fisted teenage mechanics. So you'll want to to buy the best best example you can afford. That said, what makes you want to buy a 944? While I'm sure I could make one dimensional video of common issues, I would like to know what makes someone want to buy a 30 year old car with a huge lumpy inline-four cylinder?

    • @cet777
      @cet777 7 лет назад

      edredas I remember when these were still in production when I was a kid and I always loved the way they looked. I have been looking for a fun vintage sports car for about a year and went through a couple of options, Triumph TR6, Porsche 914 for example but always come back to the 944. I'm not in need of a lot speed but I would like handling which from what I have read is the car's strong point. It just seems to tick all the right boxes for me. They also seem to be gathering more interest these days so I think there may be more people like me out there.

    • @edredas
      @edredas  7 лет назад

      Sounds good! Nice to have some insight, I know how I got into them, but that won't be everyone's story. I'm sure most people would prefer the cars with the oval dash, since it looks more modern. Not to mention, the last early car that I drove was really had some really bad road noise and I think it was due to the steel control arms. I'll see if I can't drive an early and late car back and take a sound measurement. Regardless, cars have come a long way and the harshness of the engine and road noise even on the later cars wouldn't be acceptable on a tractor today, but they are fun and unbreakable cars when put together right!

    My driver, passenger and even sunroof switches don’t do anything. Any ideas?

    • @edredas
      @edredas  2 года назад

      Does the car start and run? The power comes straight from the ignition switch into the fuse box at plug E. It then goes through the fuses and the relays for the power windows and sunroof. For neither of these to work it sounds like you have some corrosion on plug E. However, the coil also receives power from the same plug that the windows and sunroof does, so if the car runs its likely something past plug E, perhaps another plug at the fuse box has corrosion which is causing an issue. I hope that helps!

    • @edredas
      @edredas  6 лет назад +1

      I haven't looked at the wiring diagram for the later cars but I would assume that the wiring is similar. • @edredas
      @edredas  4 года назад +1

      Could be the issue since the windows should only work with the key in the on position.. Sounds like someone wired something up wrong and perhaps something on that circuit is draining the battery. I once saw someone do something similar on another car where the wipers weren't working so they straight wired them. They not only worked all the time but it caused the blower motor to run all the time until it drained the battery. Good luck!

    Hi. I have what might be a similar problem in my 1988 944 turbo. But it's regarding the power central locking system. The switch on the center console operates both door locks. The lock on the passenger's side door operates both door locks. But the lock on the driver's side door does not do anything for the passenger's side door lock. When i turn the key in the driver's side door lock, there is no electrical switch activity at all. It just manually locks or unlocks only the driver's side door. I assume the problem is in the driver's side lock somewhere since that side has been used to lock and unlock the door for 30 years. Any ideas what the problem might be? Thanks. Most of the time with the later cars replacing the switch itself will fix the issue. To test it before buying one you can try swapping in your driver side window switch to see if that solves the problem. Good luck!

    Could you make a video showing the location of the relay for the passenger window? I've already done all 3 switches and it still won't work. But if I put direct power to the motor itself it goes up and down. So it's got to be the relay. And also do you know where the cooling fan relay is for the radiator? Thanks in advance

      The power window relay supplies power to both windows, so if the drivers side window is working then the relay is working properly. Hopefully, someone hasn't bodged your wiring to it. I'll see what I can do as far as making a video on the window relay location, but for now you can can find it behind the center console where the HVAC controls are. As for the cooling fan relay, it is the very first relay on the left side upper bank of the fuse box. I hope that helps!

      edredas that does help tremendously! The wires have been messed with though it's very apparent. I had thought about trying to run them to toggle switches I have mounted in the center console area, But I want to keep that factory look.

    So none of mine are working. Bad switches or something else?

    • @edredas

      There is a single fuse and relay for both windows. Could be either of those.

      Where is the relay? Trying to locate it. Easy to source a replacement?

      @@ballvice7861 it's behind the radio in that area. Hard to describe since it's just a lone relay on the harness not affixed to anything usually. I hope that helps!

    Remember that the drivers side switch only controls 1 window
    So that is a good way of testing all three
    Cleanlness is important

      The drivers side window will work with any switch, even if it's assembled incorrectly. The passenger side switches have to pass power through them in order to operate the windows. So you can stick a bad switch in the drivers side and it won't tell you anything because the window will work perfectly fine.

    Problem is they been working fine for 6 year and never been removed. Ill check the assembly if correct then its a bad switch. "UPDATE" I used contact cleaner and it fix the problem! Those funky looking Springs we're on in the right order too

    So in a scenario where the passenger side won’t roll down at all, neither switch operates it, what would be your first thought on the problem? Thanks

      I believe that if both switches are assembled incorrectly you can end up with this issue. It might be a long shot, but checking them would be easier than pulling the door panel and checking the voltage at the plug or testing the regulator. I hope that helps!

      My nails and hands are clean 90% of the time, but touching even little things like switches makes them dirty. I mean work on cars not try to look pretty. Thanks!
