How to replace a Porsche 944 sunroof seal

- In this video I'll be replacing the sunroof seal on my Porsche 924S and showing you how to do it yourself. I also show you how clean the drains and perform other maintenance.

Just bought the sunroof seal for my 944. The seals are the first steps to bringing it back to it's glory!!
I never cut the seals to make them fit. They're usually cut to a specific length to account for expansion and contraction. If you cut them, you may end up with a gap where the two ends meet over time. When installing them, never stretch them. When I get a couple of feet away from where they mate up, I'll go ahead and butt them up and work backwards from there till it's seated. Great videos though, man... Been watching the others too.
I also use the weed eater twine method but never compressed air. Running the twine down in there to bust up any clogs and pouring some HOT water down into the holes usually takes care of the clog.
Yeah I wasn't sure if I was supposed to cut it or not since it was supposed to fit correctly but it wouldn't go on any other way. I originally had it squeezed on there but was still way too long and the roof wouldn't go back on the car. So I had to stretch it out and trim it, but as mentioned a few mm longer as to not have a gap. Its been a year now and still perfect! Thanks!
It does sound like it was a little long if you did all that. I guess it depends on the vendor. Some people make the mistake of unintentionally stretching them all the time and wonder why they have a gap after a few months.
No telling, I had heard that there were issues with some new seals not allowing the roof to sit flush after installation so I went with the Genuine Porsche seal. I assumed it would not need to be trimmed but you could tell it was just randomly cut off a spool. I have another genuine seal here and its even longer.

I have the same problem. I solved my leak though by keeping it in the garage unless it is a nice, sunny day. lol
Great video, I'll refer to this when I need to do mine! Your balance shaft video is brilliant too. Your tips worked perfectly for me when I had to reinstall the balance shaft belt as the lower shaft had been misaligned by the previous owner when they did the belts. Will you be doing a video on resealing the hatch? Pelican have a blog on how to do it but video is always best. Thanks
Thanks! I have two hatches that need resealed but I don't know that I really want to tackle that right now. I've been looking around for shops to reseal them but if I don't find one, I might try it someday...

I don't think I've ever seen any glue there, so I believe it's also held on with tension. I hope that helps!

Excellent video.! Only thing I would suggest is if you’re going to blow out your drain hoses with compressed air is that you don’t do it from the area of the sunroof- do it from the engine bay - otherwise you could blow the drain hose off the mounts.
Yeah, that would be ideal since most of the dirt would collect at the sunroof and you wouldn't have to blow it all the way out the other end, but its a hard to get to them from that side. They're really far back in there and on early cars the lines are cut at an angle making it hard to get a seal. Thanks!
I replaced mine this year, no leaks but very stiff and the motor wont lift it. It's easy ish to remove but takes a push to get it back in! Anyone have any tips to lubrication???
Great video, very informative.
Could be that the slip-clutch on the motor needs to be tightened a little. Not too much as you run the risk of stripping the gears. Check out Clark’s garage for instructions on how to adjust it.

Hey man, I’ve been watching your videos for about a year now, taking a lot of them as a guide on how to fix my own (1986 944) I recently lost all back pressure in the clutch pedal, so the pedal would go down with easy, but not come up. I’ve since replaced the master and slave cylinder, and screwed with the linkage between the push rod into the master and the clutch pedal, but I cannot, for the life of me. Get the pedal to build any pressure. Still straight to the floor. Any suggestions?
I know It's waay to late, but perhaps others wonder. You gotta pump it real slow when you're bleeding it, so the reservoir compartments has time to fill up, on the newer models at least. it needs to be straight (cant be jacked up in front) , and you need to constantly top up the reservoir as far as it can be filled .Or else you'll only pump more air down there...
Or use a power bleeder of course
This is insane timing. I fixed the issue, but now back on it. Do you mean pump the pedal real slow? I've tried reverse bleeding it, and it only barely works. And then it kinda takes me back to square one. Car has become a sitting duck for the past year. Which breaks my heart, but I'd love to have it back on the road. @@happyfox711

Nice job! Learned a lot from this video. Question: have water on my rear passenger side floor. It’s not coming from sunroof. Only when it rains. Ideas?
Door seals and even the rear window seals can cause this. I recently removed my rear window to install some new speakers and found water was getting in behind the trim under the window. The seal looked fine and so I reused it just making sure that it had a better seal and its it's been fine since. So I think sometimes it can just be from a poor seal in that area where someone has messed with it. I hope that helps!

Nope, no glue. Just a metal band in there that holds it tight. I replaced this seal many years ago without a single issue so far.
@@edredas You're right, I just found out myself. It's quiiite tight though, until it gets its shape right. Let's just say I ain't gonna open it no mo, (for a while)

What do you think about getting parts from the Porsche Dealer than thru Pelecan? Just thinking.
I say go for it! I have bought several items from the dealership before when Pelican doesn't have the part. The prices were sometimes better than Pelican but for the most part I usually don't have time to go there. My closest dealership is about 30 minutes across town so Pelican is far more convenient for me.
Now that I'm learning so much I am revitalized. just want to find out why I can not get my hood down

How can I settle the seals so the sunroof sits flush?
One thing that makes this job a little easier is spritzing the seal with some WD-40. That will make sure it fully seats on to the lip. Then make sure to pull it snug as you work your way around since any excess material will keep it from sitting properly. I hope that helps!

I have an 86 944, and I know about the sunroof seal being changed. Pelican parts doesn't differentiate between the years though, and they show me that all the seals fit. I'm confused as to which one to get.
Only944 is where I got that information. I didn't have a late 944 here when I making the video, so I couldn't check. According to them, the later seal is supposed to be a solid loop. After reading their information again, it looks like my car should've had the later solid loop but as you can see didn't. So I guess it makes no difference... I thought I would just point out that information in the video in case I was missing something and there were two parts needed. Sorry about the confusion, but I hope that helps clear it up!
I appreciate your reply! I guess there isn't much difference between the two. I was wondering something else as well, in your video you put the line through on the driver rear sunroof drain tube. I tried that today, with the same line you had, and it wouldn't go all the way through. Water seems to be flowing properly, and I used an air compressor and felt air on the other side. But I can't get the line all the way. I'm thinking it's still clogged, but I'm not sure. Any ideas?
There might be some crud built up in there, but if its flowing properly then I wouldn't really worry about it. If you start having issues then you could always go back and clear it out.
Well, just like you were, I also am having water get in. Mostly all in the driver rear floor. I hope that after messing with it today, and getting a sunroof seal, it won't leak anymore.
Part number for this seal please, Pelican shows 5 different items.
I ordered the genuine Porsche seal that's $141.00. I believe that it was part #944-564-114-06-OEM but its now saying its superseded when I click on it. So I'm not sure which one I actually received but that's was the part number I clicked on when I ordered. I hope that helps!

What would a 86 Turbo, 199k miles be worth you think?
@@benjaminhavrilak8484 Hard to say without pictures and service history. I would say that if it looks great with recent belts, rollers, water pump, and oil console seals, then it could perhaps be worth as much as $12-15k. However on the flip side, if it is rough looking with no service records and ripped seats it might only be worth $3k. So there is a wide margin there...
these is easy now do the new seals on the two rear side windows...those are a bitch
