The petrol cover switch is inside is because in alot of countries, especially Asia, there are petrol attendants that pump petrol for you. So which means when you pump petrol you dont have to get out of your car and your doors will still be locked even when your pumping petrol. As for the plug for the Hybrid, its likely you will plug it yourself in your home hence you open from the outside.
There is also a button on the BMW X5 45e. The reason in that case is that since it’s a PHEV, you might use EV mode exclusively for a while and not use any fuel. The fuel tank is pressurized to prevent a buildup of excess fuel vapors in the fuel tank
@@yungboicontigo9278 because wages are high, compared to gas prices in the USA, there's more cheap labour and opportunities to have gas station attendants, more waiters and cashiers in countries with lower GDP. Lucky for you to live where you are.

@carwow Regarding the fuel filler cap: on all plugin hybrids you have to press a button first. That is because they try to vacuum the fuel tank and this vacuum has to be released before opening. Vacuum is there because it should prolong the life of the fuel in the tank. In an odeal world you would always charge your hybrid and never use petrol. @Matt @everyone The reason they waited so long to introduce a plug-in: They didn’t want to build a car with a big battery because it’s not environmentally friendly, so they needed time to design very reliable batteries to withstand 1.000.000 km of runtime.

It's cool tech no doubt but it really isn't a special feature anymore. German brands have that feature since almost a decade now and you could get it on something like an Audi A1.
Reason why the fuel flap is button activated is due to legislation, when you press the button the fuel neck is vented to avoid fuel vapours being released. All PHEV's are the same. Bmw had a huge issue with this on the i8.

Plus you get the reliability of toyota and somewhat ridiculous value retention. Nice stop gap until real 5-600 mile evs come out (new battery tech) that you will need to charge at least every 2 days
The reason for the fuel filler release is because with these hybrids people can often go extended periods of time without refueling and so to stop the fuel going stale they pressurise the tanks, hence the button to release the pressure before you open. At least that's what I was told about the Range Rover P400e..

I think plug-in hybrids are the best of both worlds. Enough EV range to do 90% of peoples normal commute without using fuel, and can take on a long drive with the ICE engine.
Exactly and in an electric car you are also driving around with the additional weight of the larger battery unless you are using the full capacity all the time. So I see what Matt means here but I think I would prefer a PHEV vs full EV.

@@intergalacticsucker1724he doesn't measure like that. He always has rollout included. He's shown and said that time and time again in some of his videos
Regarding needing a button to open the petrol cap: In order not to have fuel evaporate into the atmosphere, a lot of PHEVs have pressurised petrol tanks (only slightly above atmospheric pressure). More needed in PHEVs because petrol more likely to sit there unused for ages and traditional techniques to deal with this in ICE cars require the engine to run more regularly. The button depressurises the tank before unlocking.
A great review, however I would have liked to have seen the results of fuel economy when driving in full hybrid mode on the plug in/self charging model, maybe over a journey of around 150 miles. I'm an owner of a 2020 NX and would have been interested to see if the mpg is better or worse in the new model, bearing in mind the increased weight.
The fuel cap has to be locked as fueling a hybrid requires the car to depressurize the tank. So you have to tell the car to ready itself for refueling.
I am big fans of PHEV. We currently having a Prius Prime and Volvo XC90 PHEV, which are absolutely doing their job, and can do road trip without range anxiety. The Prius can do over 1000km with a full charge & single fill and the Volvo can do over 750km.
Wow! The new NX is BEAUTIFUL! My wife has the first gen Nx200t, 130k km and never ever had any problem, maintenance cost is as much as a Toyota! She loves it! However the hybrid one really felt weak... I wished NX would come in the new 2,4L 275hp PLUS plug in hybrid and make it over 350-400hp! I would sell my car for it in a heart beat!
@@Tron2011ch is it available for test drive? where do you live mate? What else can you tell me about the 350h? I've pre-ordered it here in Australia and I'm waiting for a test drive.
The Lexus grill looks like a combination of a garden net and a snow plow, but as you can see it doesn't bother fanboys. As is the fact that Lexus is largely the more expensive Toyota.
I’d go with the plug-in. Fully loaded everything between 450h and 450h+ is around $2000. Besides, here in the US, I think the plug-in variant is eligible for federal incentives of around $7500. If this is confirmed, the plug-in would be significantly cheaper and have all the capabilities of a plug-in should you need it. I am in with the 450h+ Just gotta find one.
When Mat says, "Well firstly its a Lexus, it's never going to break" that really reassures me & others as (Petrol Heads, Owners & Car Enthusiasts) that Japanese cars are the best when it comes to dependability & reliability & of course quality, other manufacturers by country such as Germany & Great Britain is also where you look towards quality & luxury such as the VW Group (Porsche, Audi, Bentley & Lamborghini) & the BMW Group (BMW, MINI & Rolls Royce Motor Cars) & of course Jaguar Land Rover & Aston Martin.
The body of this Lexus NX, especially in side-rear angle profile, reminds me of Mazda CX-5, a bit sportier and perhaps overall better looking and more luxurious.
The fuel caps are different because people try to steal petrol out of cars circa the fuel crisis last year. If your fuel gauge could be opened externally you would be a big target for theft.
I really appreciate your reviews man. I've been car hunting for months and you're literally the only person who's opinion I trust. Didn’t they already have adaptive headlights on all their models with matrix LED. I drove the LS500 president line and the automatic high beam was fantastic with it exactly following oncoming traffic and leaving a blank space in the light beam to not dazzle

Have to disagree at 21:10. If your daily routine only involves around 40 miles of driving and you want to drive electric, the net result is you’ve done all your weeks driving emissions-free as you would have in a full EV. If you typically do 5k miles in a year, that’s a huge reduction in petrol over the course of a year. Maybe you do a few road trips in hybrid mode, and even then you would maybe have used 500 miles worth of fuel in a year. People buying it just for tax benefits may not use it this way, but for people who want to actually drive electric and can charge at home this is a serious option.
The fuel filler cap has a button because its a safety feature. Look it up, you won't be disappointed at the attention to detail that Lexus/ Toyota put into small things like that.
The tax advantages are real, but even disregarding that, plug-in hybrids are not pointless at all for a very large group of car users. And I'm one of them. Most days I do no more than 20 miles just locally, and then every couple of weeks I am likely to do a 500 mile round trip. With a plug-in hybrid, I will have no significant fuel cost in everyday use, and no need to wake the petrol engine for a lot of cold-start short local runs. Yet I will also have no range anxiety or charging delays on the long trips. For someone who wants one car to do it all, something like this is a very attractive proposition.
Well they're pointless from the perspective of "doing something for the environment". Only that. And can only be used by people who own homes with garages, for the rest of us living in the city buildings (ca.60%) this is overpriced, useless ,virtue-signaling tool of the dimwits.
One thing you have to know with Lexus: they never do sth by accident. I guess that the wobble on the center console is intentionally. If you put it in too tight, it’ll loosen over the time and will start to make noises whereas if you have a bit of controlled play it’ll never make any noises as if in eg BMWs
i didn't find the petrol fuel lock annoying, i think its a good feature, someone can steal petrol or maybe can put something in the tank like sugar, which causes issues. whereas with electric there is less chance of sabotaging it. (or i lack the imagination that someone can severely sabotage the charging port too 😉).
The wabble in the centre console is because the model you tested is preproduction. Production models of the Lexus NX are bolted together tightly as you would expect from a lexus
You can’t open the fuel door without pushing a button, because for the hybrid system and emissions, the tank is pressurized and the car has to know when to release the pressure
I believe that in Europe, the categories for luxury cars are Rolls Royce, Bentley, etc. Brands such as Lexus, Mercedes and the like are considered 'premium' cars
@@ekgcanadianenthusiast9961 I truly think it's just the way they categorize things but (many not all) are totally snobs and xenophobic about Asian brands tbh. We have all seen the comments online.
The petrol tank inlet is only openable from inside and not press and release probably because people will try to steal petrol from the car. The charging socket on the other hand can be press and release.

The Good: looks stylish compared to the competitors, seats look great.. Infotainment is much better than previous (but still behind the class leaders), quiet car, good performance, Toyota reliability, decent interior space, EV only range reasonably decent.. Plus no range anxiety for EV only.. The bad: dash looks cluttered and not easy to read at a glance, infotainment still dated. Decent PHEV vehicles from toyota/lexus are too expensive and it's not going to be possible to recover the outlay unless it's a company purchase.. You still have ICE costs and servicing. I watch a lot of car reviews, and Mat is just the best out there. Smart, funny, easy to listen to. Points out the things you want to know. I'm on a waitlist to get this car in the US. It's just what I've been looking for. Thanks carwow for another great review!

I find it difficult to listen to American reviewers
@wass006 it's usually the monotone delivery some seem to have, I find it difficult too
He tends to swallow his words.
That 0-60 is actually impressive from a plug in Lexus SUV, wasn't expecting that.
his "specialist timing gear" is set up in rollout mode. therefore almost all his 0-60 test seem to be quicker that manufacturers claim. but you could not know that because this is not car enthusiasts channel. only consumers.

Love your no nonesense style. It's like having a freind telling you all the good/bad of their car. Great job!
Regarding needing a button to open the petrol cap:
In order not to have fuel evaporate into the atmosphere, a lot of PHEVs have pressurised petrol tanks (only slightly above atmospheric pressure).
How much mpg do you get on your 2020?
The fuel cap has to be locked as fueling a hybrid requires the car to depressurize the tank. So you have to tell the car to ready itself for refueling.
I was expecting a “just go right ahead and buy it” . That is a great looking car 👍
I can totally recommend the new hybrid! 350h is a huge step up from the old one. I‘ve driven it last friday
The 350h has more power than the previous 300h. Hopefully shouldn't be a slouch. I've pre-ordered 350h F Sport AWD
@@Tron2011ch is it available for test drive? where do you live mate? What else can you tell me about the 350h? I've pre-ordered it here in Australia and I'm waiting for a test drive.

@@SergCarReviews 27th Jan? :( I was also told that most of the orders were for the 350h. Hard to keep waiting
Plus the larger charge spaces in car parks.
Mat, your genuine passion for cars shines through, always. It’s great to watch.
He’s soo good so easy to watch 😄
When Mat says, "Well firstly its a Lexus, it's never going to break" that really reassures me & others as (Petrol Heads, Owners & Car Enthusiasts) that Japanese cars are the best when it comes to dependability & reliability & of course quality, other manufacturers by country such as Germany & Great Britain is also where you look towards quality & luxury such as the VW Group (Porsche, Audi, Bentley & Lamborghini) & the BMW Group (BMW, MINI & Rolls Royce Motor Cars) & of course Jaguar Land Rover & Aston Martin.
It does actually look very nice both interior and exterior
Well its a lexus
Don't joke, every Lexus is exaggerated and the grill looks ugly, but Toyota fans don't mind it.

As a Lexus fanboy, I can safely say they have done me proud with the infotainment. It’s about time!

Ux and ct200h are not my favorite lexus models .nx is a fantastic luxury suv focus on comfort and mpg
I have had Discovery’s ,BMW X5,Audi Q5 and there is no doubt my Lexus NX is better built than anything else I’ve owned
The body of this Lexus NX, especially in side-rear angle profile, reminds me of Mazda CX-5, a bit sportier and perhaps overall better looking and more luxurious.
Ngl the design paired with the color and the grille looks gorgeous
looks outdated and old asf

The fuel caps are different because people try to steal petrol out of cars circa the fuel crisis last year. If your fuel gauge could be opened externally you would be a big target for theft.

Didn’t they already have adaptive headlights on all their models with matrix LED. I drove the LS500 president line and the automatic high beam was fantastic with it exactly following oncoming traffic and leaving a blank space in the light beam to not dazzle
I think so
I believe he is referring to this model only
the real lights are copied from bmw 3 series lol
imagine this brand new amazing technology... only issue is that I have this on a frigging corsa lol
These headlights will have the blade scan technology, it’s actually pretty amazing. But yes you’re right the headlights are the triple led headlight system where it can automatically un illuminate any high beam. It can turn of the middle high beams if there’s a car in front or turn off the right/left side high beams for opposite incoming cars.
The fuel cap only works like that is for safety reason, to prevent someone from stealing your gas/petrol.

@@vinayshsureshram277 I probably prefer the 350h as well but the non fsport. Cant wait to test drive it in January 2022.
350h f sport may be over $90k AUD considering the current NX300h awd (with enhancement pack) is already $88k (non f sport). Personally I think $75k-$85k is more ideal for NX because if it’s over $85k I would prefer to buy a 1-2 year old RX

It will all be very interesting and can’t wait to put up some reviews on it when it lands in Australia 👌
bulletproof reliability. Have one for 4 years. Absolute nothing gone wrong.
I have adaptive LED on ES and LS. 🤷🏻♂️ Not too new for Lexus
I would take the NX over an Q5 because it's more quality and style
Great test! 👌The best suv!👌 Bravo Japan! Germany out!
Won't happen lol

Great for sharing this car has heated backseats; I have the feeling this is missing in other caras that may have.- Thanks
Lexus NX design is so beautiful I love it. The headlights is so beautiful 🚗💖
Agree
the look is from 2010 LOL
@@MrBreakingBud you dont like it .its ok.
i didn't find the petrol fuel lock annoying, i think its a good feature, someone can steal petrol or maybe can put something in the tank like sugar, which causes issues. whereas with electric there is less chance of sabotaging it. (or i lack the imagination that someone can severely sabotage the charging port too 😉).
Most cars have locking fuel flaps, but when the cars unlocked you can just push them to open instead of messing around with a button.
@@Xenon0000000000001 I didn't know that, I drive a 2 wheeler 😂
The wabble in the centre console is because the model you tested is preproduction. Production models of the Lexus NX are bolted together tightly as you would expect from a lexus
You can’t open the fuel door without pushing a button, because for the hybrid system and emissions, the tank is pressurized and the car has to know when to release the pressure
Thx for the review Matt. i requested this one for two month ago and here we are so thank you very much .
I never understood that every car tested should have space for a big 1 liter bottle..! 2 half liter bottles is much easier to handle.

👍
The Good: looks stylish compared to the competitors, seats look great.. Infotainment is much better than previous (but still behind the class leaders), quiet car, good performance, Toyota reliability, decent interior space, EV only range reasonably decent.. Plus no range anxiety for EV only..
The bad: dash looks cluttered and not easy to read at a glance, infotainment still dated. Decent PHEV vehicles from toyota/lexus are too expensive and it's not going to be possible to recover the outlay unless it's a company purchase.. You still have ICE costs and servicing. It's not a ground up EV so space isn't as good as it could be..
My thought... Wait for the market to produce better.. Maybe 600km range EVs for example..
