This is the kind of car, I have been waiting for. It's got the best of both worlds with it being a 4wd plugin hybrid with no range anxiety and very good horsepower. Finally Lexus ..... Thank you for massively upgrading the infortainment system. Now it's the complete luxury package. I would by this over any German brand!

The petrol cover switch is inside is because in alot of countries, especially Asia, there are petrol attendants that pump petrol for you. So which means when you pump petrol you dont have to get out of your car and your doors will still be locked even when your pumping petrol. As for the plug for the Hybrid, its likely you will plug it yourself in your home hence you open from the outside.

There is also a button on the BMW X5 45e. The reason in that case is that since it’s a PHEV, you might use EV mode exclusively for a while and not use any fuel. The fuel tank is pressurized to prevent a buildup of excess fuel vapors in the fuel tank

@carwow Regarding the fuel filler cap: on all plugin hybrids you have to press a button first. That is because they try to vacuum the fuel tank and this vacuum has to be released before opening. Vacuum is there because it should prolong the life of the fuel in the tank. In an odeal world you would always charge your hybrid and never use petrol. So the fuel might get old with all the oxygen and will not ignite properly.

Reason why the fuel flap is button activated is due to legislation, when you press the button the fuel neck is vented to avoid fuel vapours being released. All PHEV's are the same. Bmw had a huge issue with this on the i8.

@@funkyhouseman I do not know those exact models, but still it is hard to believe that. At first, there no reasons to make extra steps on hybrids, why!? European cars have it connected to central locking system and opening doors, opens also fuel flap.

The tax advantages are real, but even disregarding that, plug-in hybrids are not pointless at all for a very large group of car users. And I'm one of them. Most days I do no more than 20 miles just locally, and then every couple of weeks I am likely to do a 500 mile round trip. With a plug-in hybrid, I will have no significant fuel cost in everyday use, and no need to wake the petrol engine for a lot of cold-start short local runs. Yet I will also have no range anxiety or charging delays on the long trips. For someone who wants one car to do it all, something like this is a very attractive proposition.

    • @ms-jl6dl

Regarding needing a button to open the petrol cap:
In order not to have fuel evaporate into the atmosphere, a lot of PHEVs have pressurised petrol tanks (only slightly above atmospheric pressure). More needed in PHEVs because petrol more likely to sit there unused for ages and traditional techniques to deal with this in ICE cars require the engine to run more regularly.
The button depressurises the tank before unlocking.

Have to disagree at 21:10. If your daily routine only involves around 40 miles of driving and you want to drive electric, the net result is you’ve done all your weeks driving emissions-free as you would have in a full EV.
If you typically do 5k miles in a year, that’s a huge reduction in petrol over the course of a year. Maybe you do a few road trips in hybrid mode, and even then you would maybe have used 500 miles worth of fuel in a year.
People buying it just for tax benefits may not use it this way, but for people who want to actually drive electric and can charge at home this is a serious option.
