If Tera Blast returns without Tera then I could see a few ways it could be handled -Mostly untouched and becomes a normal type attack that can be special or physical -Pokemon needs to hold an item to change the move’s type -A new item or NPC is added to change it’s type -It can only be the same type as the Pokemon (with an item or method that can change if the move matches the Pokemon’s primary or secondary type) Also if any of the above still makes the move unhealthy then the move can be turned into a 2-turn attacking move for balance
i basically only have contact with VGC this generation, and tera blast being basically non existance in the Official Format TM, i had no idea how unhealthy to the singles metagame it was really cool video
the only real users of tera blast in vgc are gyarados and lando t, they often run tera flying tera blast because gamefreak has a hobby of making flying type pokemon with no flying stab
Your editing is really good. Was surprised at the amount of subs you have. Well now you have at least one more. Fun video, and I also hate tera in general. Can't wait for the likely return of megas
I think terestalizing itself is unhealthy. Changing types and flipping counterplay on offensive mons in one turn is absurd. Kingambit is an especially bad case since it turns many games into a guessing nightmare. In the past gens, when you got off guard by hax, you could usually recover from that. The combination of getting off guard by a tera into hax is way more punishing and potentially game ending. Some offensive mons are barely checked in this tier and the fact that battle dont take long at all makes it even worse I wont deny that tera can be skillrevolving and in some games it looks like a fun and balanced mechanic. It helps making comebacks with well calculated plays afterall. However I think Pokemon doesnt need a comeback mechanic as strong as this (and Gambit) and it should focus more on progression. I think tera does more harm than good overall
from my understanding of what you're saying, it seems like most of the problems that people have with tera pretty much just revolves around tera blast there's still being able to suddenly answer a defensive check at the press of a button, but i think people have largely gotten used to that play pattern and can acquire knowledge on what teras are good on which pokemon. i'm still a firm believer that i feel like Game Freak should've initially went the item route and turn tera's ability into something enabled by a held item a la a mega stone/z-crystal, and i think in those circumstances that tera blast could be a sort of "helping glue together your build-a-pokemon" sort of thought. but as it stands, where tera can just be dropped on a dime via dynamax, i can understand why you push for it so hard.
Nah the biggest problem is Tera enabling setup mons. Even with hidden power volc was fine for years in the weaker gens before now. Because volc had to work for its setup. On a fundamental level Tera is broken with setup moves and it’s the reason why the meta is pretty much dominated by hyper offense. You Tera click a setup move and win that’s how mafia works. Volc was essentially using its same old sets just using Tera blast as hidden power but it was ban worthy this gen because of Tera enabling setup mons so much. Tera disproportionately benefits hyper offense and stall is pretty much straight up unviable this gen especially when combined with the recovery move nerf.
I love Tera Blast. It gives every Pokémon good coverage, and is very useful for filling otherwise empty move slots. Honestly one of the moves of all time.
Hi Ausma, what do you think there is to do in trying to actually take tiering action on Tera Blast? Correct me if I'm wrong but, my understanding of the situation is that TB doesn't have enough support to take action on it because it's not broken, only unhealthy. As someone who wants TB to go but is new to smogon, I don't have enough experience to really know how to go about garnering support to ban something unhealthy rather than broken, so would you mind sharing your insight?
hi! things that are unhealthy can and have been acted upon. a really infamous example this gen has been with sleep. it was very contentious on whether or not sleep was problematic, but many of the reasons that were argued against it were on the basis of being generally considered uncompetitive and a way to introduce variance into the tier. if you want to vocalize your thoughts and take a stab at rallying support yourself, i would super recommend making a post in the metagame discussion thread we have over on the ou forums; garnering discussion there is a good way to catch attention of mods and the council by proxy
Yooo can't believe I caught the next big poketuber at 3-digit subs! I think something that demonstrates these issues really well is randbats. In randbats, Tera Blast is perfectly healthy and honestly pretty meh much of the time - it can help certain sweepers overcome types that wall them (often Steel), but it overall feels balanced and manageable. It adds nuance and strategy rather than removing it. And that's because you always know exactly what kind of Tera Blast an opposing mon has! Tera Blast basically turns into another coverage move that you have to account for like Dazzling Gleam on Ghold, rather than a wild card that's down to matchup luck. And it helps rescue a lot of low-tier pokemon that would otherwise really struggle to be the sweepers they want to be, like Lilligant or Florges. In randbats Tera Blast is a further investment on an offensive tera - if you get it then that's one less crucial move you have, but also an opportunity to get extra value out of your tera if you're willing to spend it and can position it right.
@@ImplodingChicken that’s a really interesting thing to hear, i think it defo makes sense since you can’t build and tech specific meta targets, but it still gives you a reliable ace in the hole that can actually succeed at propelling weaker mons into stardom. just a shame its dynamic is so skewed in builder-based formats also thank you!!!! i don’t know if ill pop off anywhere near that hard but we’ll see lol
@@ausma9350 Bro the quality is already better than some mid-to-large size poketubers, plus you've got the skills and know-how to back it up. But this is exactly the same thing that was always happening for Hidden Power, just a little bit stronger of a move, people have clubg to certain competetive mainstays for a long time no matter how good, bad, healthy or unhealthy they are and no matter the format

And this has been going back as far as Competitive has been a thing." Hidden Power is just the perfect example because of similarities to the meta warping properties of Tera/Blast and itself being one of the oldest examples of this
Hidden Power is *significantly* weaker and a far healthier coverage tool as a result. After STAB, which you will always have after Terastallizing, Tera Blast is always 120 power while Hidden Power is stuck at 60, and you'll basically never see STAB Hidden Power. Honestly were it up to me, we'd being it back in Gen 10, but have it capable of being Physical as well as Special. Then we could have Tera Type carry over (even if we don't still have the Tera mechanic) and use it to determine your Hidden Power Type instead of IVs.
Hidden power does almost half the damage and isnt close to as usable on physical attacks which yea terablast has a high commitment cost but then again it still has some extra utilities like tera changing your typing

Compared to what? Hidden Power also gives people whatever type move they want and doesn't require Tera. I know it stopped existing at some point, but none of the previous metagames with hidden power removed it as far as I know. Is the STAB boost on Tera Blast really what sets a more limited Hidden Power over the edge?
i don’t find hidden power to be a healthy option either, but yea it is far more tame due to the reliance on hitting super effectively and only being on special attackers. main advantage is that you don’t need to commit your mechanic either, which makes it less matchup fishy
there are a couple issues with that. the first is that tera starstorm is only part of what makes terapagos busted with tera, and the second is that tiering precedent blocks banning complex banning moves on only one pokemon since you can’t definitively prove it’s the move that breaks them. so no this would definitely not be feasible unless we outright banned tera
