I remember having a random respawn on Rainbow Road when I was younger. I was so perplexed by me just randomly being counted as out of bounds, I wanted to recreate it for a long time, but to no success.
@@MKWilliam This is so true. Every time something extremely unusual has happened to me in a video game, I've always completely failed to document it in any way even if I had the resources to lmao. For example, and this is the most recent something like this has happened to me, I remember playing Bowser's Castle on Mario Kart Wii, and suddenly, Funky Kong stopped playing voice clips when he'd trick or hit walls. Guess what I did? Instead of saving the ghost, I just shrugged it off and thought it was strange. This was in 2021, and only played MKW for a few months and just assumed it wasn't that unusual. Then I see months later, one of the best MKW players Logan, made a post on twitter showing the same glitch and asked if it has happened to anyone else before. Given that Logan has been playing MKW for years and has thousands of hours on the game, it's safe to say it's pretty rare lmao
this glitch happened to me on dino dino jungle i was racing and randomly it respawned me onto another section of the track i was shocked and i thought i had broke my game but after watching this video i can confirm that im extremely lucky to have experienced this its a shame i didnt record it but thanks for this amazing content william
I still haven't experienced it, but yeah the thought of thousands of people around the world being scared by it randomly happening to them really amuses me
Yeah, it's not something that's ever happened to me either. There's somebody in the community who said it had only happened to them 3 times in 10,000 hours of playtime which is pretty insane.
It’s crazy impressive how good you are at finding new things, like with what you did at the end with the wall!!! I’m still new to this community and you blow my mind every video XD
Thank you! Finding new things is really fun for me, it really feels like a puzzle a lot of them time. Although there really isn't really much left to find in this game sadly :(
Thank you! There are actually a couple of other places where they could theoretically save time, it's just it's so rare that there's only one video of anyone ever actually getting one that saved time
What a strange glitch. Also, love your content man. Mario Kart 7, being my favorite Mario Kart game, is underrated as it is. Thanks for being so active about it, and keep up the phenomenal work.
Cool video! I haven’t seen any content like this for Mario Kart 7. :D By the way, are there any TASes that use the “random” respawn? How precise exactly does your position need to be for it to work?
Thanks! I made one for Mario Circuit 2 a couple of months ago, but yeah there really aren't that many for this game. There aren't any TASes that currently use a random respawn, but if we ever get brute force tools it's possible that we might be able to force them to happen. I couldn't say for certain how precise it is, but given that the game tracks lap completion to 16 decimal places, it's possible that the gap genuinely is about .0000000000000001 big
With this one we knew where a shortcut would be because of the random respawn, so it was (quite literally) just banging your head against a wall until something happened XD
i got a random respawn on cheep cheep cape and skiped a good bit of the course. you should make a discord server where people can show gameplays of glitches and come up with ideas for potential shortcuts.
We actually already have a discord server for mk7 speedruns, I just haven't really promoted it on my channel before. Here's the link if you're interested though :) discord.gg/PeQj4GV
Yeah, I've personally never actually experienced one lol. Most players who have played a long time have had it happen at least once, but it is still very rare
@@MKWilliam It happened on Kalimari desert, just before the second crossing next to the big ramp. 1st to 6th in seconds. I was trying to get 3 star rank on the mirror cups at the time as I only recently got my 3DS up and running again after a few years (charger broke lol)
Random respawns are honestly one of the coolest things about Mk7, it’s so wild to watch it happen to you. I’ve only ever had it happen 1 single time from memory, and it was on a custom track in CTGP-7
I am two weeks lates, but I really love discovering glitches like that. I didn't even know it existed random respawn like that. Also congrats for discovering this trick!
I didn't discover random respawns, but yeah Mario Circuit glitch is cool. It was actually the 16th glitch discovered in the game which makes it a lot cooler
@@MKWilliam I am impressed to know there's more glitch in this game. But yeah the fact it's the 16th glitch made it cooler. I love how huge game with cool glitches like that is awesome!
In music park at the last corner with the drum you can actually glitch into the wall by hopping and turning right at a frame perfect moment and respawn behind the drum
Thanks! I got kind of burnt out from TASing so I wanted to try something new and I've really been enjoying making these. I have started slowly getting back into TASing again though, it's just nothing has been finished yet XD
This makes me think, I know it sounds ridiculous, but couldn’t there be any way to try and make a set up for one of these random respawns, even if not for speedruning purposes?
The precision required is pretty much inhuman. I think it might be possible for a TAS run if we got more tools to be able to try and bruteforce it, but I don't think anyone has ever had it happen intentionally, it's always just been while playing the game
Something you might want to look into more: every single random respawn (at least that you showed) was in first person. Maybe there were others that you didn't show, but it's interesting to me that everyone who got that glitch was using first-person mode. And more notably, in you're in first person, you're probably using motion controls, so I think maybe the motion controls allow for more precise frames to be hit, perhaps from it restricting your movement? This is just speculation, but it's something I did notice...
First person is because of the replay point of view, it's either that or cinematic camera, they weren't actually driving in 1st person. the replay system really sucks lol
Thank you! It's actually not even a free cam, it's a modified version of a live replay code. Essentially I drive the track normally (while trying to stay as straight as possible and without drifting), and then I play back the run using a modified version of B-squo's live replay code that also makes my kart invisible. I think there are texture modifications on gamebanana that might be able to be used instead of modifying the live replay code if you're wanting to recreate it
All the examples of the respawn happening were in First Person mode, is that just from ghost playback? Is there any correlation with that if not? Either way, kinda interested in seeing what a TAS would look like if it could replicate the respawn.
Yeah, it's just because of Mario Kart 7's replay system. All of them were most likely driven in 3rd person, there are very few players who actually use 1st person. I think with more tools we could definitely start to use random respawns in TASes, there are a lot of really cool theoretical spots that they could be used, so I really hope that one day they will be usable
If random respawns are only based on player input, shouldn't it be easy to replicate it on short race examples (1:35)? And have you tried clipping the glitchy wall in the MC castle with tas (shown somewhere at 4:26)?🐉
Cf said in dms to me that he had a ghost that got a random respawn once, and that the ghost also respawned, so theoretically DK Jungle should be one of the easier ones to replicate it on, although it would still need to match the inputs from stelzigs video perfectly which may be impossible. I've never seen anyone get anything that even looked close when trying to clip that wall, I probably did try for a couple of minutes but idk
@@MKWilliam aw, that's unfortunate. we should gather all of the mk7 community for a replay with random respawn. sucks to think that TAs tools aren't good enough (yet) to reproduce it
Also, at that same corner in music park random respawns aka (rr), happened to me. When it happened i was like, DID I JUAT GLITCH INTO THE WALL!?!?! Or DID I FALL INTO OUT OF BOUNDS INSIDE THE RACE TRACK WHERE YOUR SUPPOSED TO BE!!?????!???
Yo I had a really weird respawn glitch on the second Maple Treeway glider section at the end of an online race one time! Might be quite a bit different from this one too. I was in dead last so I did some weird maneuver to hook hard to the left and fall out of bounds as second-to-last inevitably crossed the finish line. The race finished right around when I triggered the out of bounds effect (IDK if that’s relevant). For whatever reason though, Lakitu put me on the complete other side of the track, at the end of the FIRST glider section. Too many potentials factors at play here to say for certain, but I was never able to recreate the glitch again so maybe it’s something that’s super unlikely like this is
Do you remember where exactly you jumped off? If it was immediately after the bridge, then I have a pretty good guess as to what happened, although I have literally no idea how it happened. I had a similar respawn happen to me on daisy cruiser where I respawned in a place that should have been impossible based on what key checkpoint I was in. What ended up happening in that case was that the normal checkpoint thought i was halfway around the track, while the key checkpoint still thought i was at the start. Before that happened to me a couple of years ago that was thought to be completely impossible, so it'd be really cool if it's actually the same thing that happened to you, because it would mean it wasn't just a one-off thing
@@MKWilliam I was way too vague in certain spots with my earlier explanation. I also stopped actively playing MK7 around 2017-2018, and only came back as the servers were nearing shutdown, so I am definitely an unreliable narrator who’s washed up on the terminology. Here’s a hopefully better explanation that you can maybe partially quote me on. Maybe. The parts I know for absolutely certain: Last lap on Maple Treeway, last place in an online lobby. I’m using my Mii with the meta combo (you know the one LOL) with Flower Glider. I hit the second glider pad and do some weird maneuver to hook to the left. As I’m in the air heading to the left, the race auto-finishes and I lose control of my kart. My kart continues forward + to the left then eventually triggers the out of bounds effect. Lakitu drops me back to where the “cannon” shoots you. Some other details I don’t have exact memory of but am mostly sure about: My kart managed to glide further left (i.e. towards the empty center of the track) than I have ever been able to recreate, seemingly past the invisible walls that glider section has. The out-of-bounds effect triggered a little later than it should have (just enough to make me go “huh?” when it happened) And here’s some less certain details as well. I think I probably hit the glider pad on the right side at an angle while releasing a normal Mini Turbo. Knowing me, I almost certainly did one of those glider strats to gain altitude that you might use for, say, the Dino Dino Jungle glider shortcut. But whether I did a pure “hold down-left on the joystick” strat or performed a dive before or did something else entirely, I can’t recall at all. My gut says I was just doing down-left. Also, I don’t believe the glider auto-retracted at all until I triggered the OOB, but also I have conflicting memories which would suggest that I manually retracted it… the manual retracting might have been from when I was experimenting, trying to recreate the glitch in the days right after it happened. I also don’t think the kart changed course at all after I lost control of it - just a straight line in the direction it had been heading. I may have had a boost item, but I think me falling off the course is how I ended up in this situation to begin with. So yeah, too many potential factors indeed. Depending on which parts of my recollection actually happened, the respawn glitch could’ve had something to do with the game taking control of my kart as I finish last. Or maybe I clipped over/through the invisible wall in some bizarre precise way, or it’s some random rare online-only jank, or it’s one of the rare checkpoint cases you’ve described. At any rate, I revisited that section of the course just now and continue to have no luck recreating what happened, or getting anything close
Reminds me of the position precise frame perfect trick on mk8 raindbow road that you can do after the first glider on the two green and red tracks. It's happened to me a lot of times in my ~100 or so hours of playing the track but it's not exactly common
I've never had a random respawn in Mario Kart 7, so it's probably not exactly comparable, but that does sound pretty rare. I'm not actually that familiar with mk8, that sounds cool i might look into that
@@MKWilliam it's not comparable at all I've had it happen 4 times in a 5 hour session and there have been spans where I didn't see it for weeks, random respawns are a once in a lifetime thing it seems like from this video so yea. Just a weird anecdote from my mk8 rainbow road grind
I borrowed my friend's 3ds and was playing mk7 for the first time in a while and I got a respawn in the middle of the road in rmc2 in a world wide race that didn't make sense lol.
@@wiirambo7437 savestates and slowdown (both built into citra emulator), and a code that copy's the inputs from a ghost to the player (which lets us collaborate on runs, and also optimize further since we can compare to a ghost more easily). There's also quality of life things like a ghost always saves code, a code to force 3rd person, and an instant finish code, but those just make things look better and take less time, they don't necessarily help with with TASing itself
From a personal perspective it has to be my Rosalina's Ice World world record, since that was my first world record and it was a really incredible journey to get there
Not with the current tools we have, but theoretically there will come a day when it will be possible. I'm definitely looking forward to it though, there are several theoretical random respawn spots that are really cool shortcuts
If the glitch occurs due to being in a specific spot during a frame, wouldnt slowing down increase the chance of not passing through that spot? Also, are there no ways of creating setups that either guarantee, or greatly increase the chances of the glitch? Unless im not understanding something, doing the glitch more consistently seems fairly simple. (Though it would still be inconsistent)
Yeah you can probably make a setup to make it more consistent, but it's still way too inconsistent to ever be useful in a run. I think we might be able to do it in TASes if we ever get bruteforce tools though
i remember posting a video of this happening to me on mushroom gorge back in feb 2012. it put me back down right where the phantom OOB happened so i never thought much of it. very curious what causes it.
some of the ghost files from the TASes we have made are available at docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1kzQFXDus08MkSCOBCTcxoB4GFgmjOAF_MQ28Ee5EanE/edit#gid=1369354970, but not all of them have ghost files for various reasons
@@Goku_Black133 I have another video with voice over coming out soon, and Hgt did just release a new TAS that I helped with a lot of the strats on. I've worked on a few TASes recently, but I've mainly been strat finding instead of working on completing a full run
Hey! As far as I know, there aren't any TAS servers for Mario Kart 8, however you should be able to find some of the community in the mkleaderboards discord server (should be able to find it at mkleaderboards.com). There are also some fairly high ranked mk8dx players in the mk7 server, so if you end up not being able to find anywhere to share it, I can always send you the link to that server as a starting place.
rMT would definitely be an interesting video, I just know of somebody else in the community who has been working on a video for the track for a really long time so unless they aren't working on it anymore, I don't really want to take away from their efforts
@@GloobaTSX it's possible it'll be done this summer, I'm not sure. I don't really know exactly what it will cover, I just know they've been working on it for a long time off and on
Maybe one day :). But it's honestly just really cool to be able to have so many people interested in such niche things, the internet can be a really cool place sometimes
There were 2 ways of calculating the odds, either using the estimate for how small the gap between the checkpoints is or using community data. I ended up just asking the community how many times they had experienced a random respawn and how many total hours they had on the game since it relied on less estimating. I then calculated how frequently players will on average cross a checkpoint. It's likely a little bit off since the sample size was quite small, and also because most of the people that responded had at least experienced it before, but it's hard to say for certain. I did at least try to make sure any bias kept the numbers smaller rather than larger though
Within a month :). I have one that I've fully recorded voiceover for and have done most of the editing, but I'm on holiday rn so i probably won't be able to finish it until I get back

The out-of-bounds effect triggered a little later than it should have (just enough to make me go “huh?” when it happened)
And here’s some less certain details as well.
Damn, this game is 12 years old.
Well, 11 and a half, but yes :(
Reminds me of the position precise frame perfect trick on mk8 raindbow road that you can do after the first glider on the two green and red tracks.
I'd love to know how many people it's happened to that just think they're going crazy
Cool video 👍
Thanks!
Is there a way of brute forcing input sequences which work for the "random" respawn glitch?
Unfortunately not, we don't have any brute force tools yet
@@MKWilliam What tools do you currently have? (I know nothing about MK7 TASing)
@@MKWilliam can you alter the ghost inputs in any way?
Will you upload soon
Hopefully! I have a video that's nearly finished so I should be able to get that out soon
What’s your favorite mk7 time trials that you have completed?
From a personal perspective it has to be my Rosalina's Ice World world record, since that was my first world record and it was a really incredible journey to get there
Could random respawns be done in TAS?
Not with the current tools we have, but theoretically there will come a day when it will be possible. I'm definitely looking forward to it though, there are several theoretical random respawn spots that are really cool shortcuts
If the glitch occurs due to being in a specific spot during a frame, wouldnt slowing down increase the chance of not passing through that spot?
Also, are there no ways of creating setups that either guarantee, or greatly increase the chances of the glitch?
Unless im not understanding something, doing the glitch more consistently seems fairly simple. (Though it would still be inconsistent)
Or you could just drive back and forth until the spot is hit.
Yeah you can probably make a setup to make it more consistent, but it's still way too inconsistent to ever be useful in a run. I think we might be able to do it in TASes if we ever get bruteforce tools though
"fear of the unkown" dis a mario kart vid what bro talken about
the fear of the unknown
i remember posting a video of this happening to me on mushroom gorge back in feb 2012. it put me back down right where the phantom OOB happened so i never thought much of it. very curious what causes it.
I explained in this video what causes it a little later on :)
How do i download a MK7 tas?
some of the ghost files from the TASes we have made are available at docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1kzQFXDus08MkSCOBCTcxoB4GFgmjOAF_MQ28Ee5EanE/edit#gid=1369354970, but not all of them have ghost files for various reasons

Is the mk7 tas glitch and ultra shortcuts possible in Mario kart 7 v12?
Yup!

Thanks!

@@Goku_Black133 I have another video with voice over coming out soon, and Hgt did just release a new TAS that I helped with a lot of the strats on. I've worked on a few TASes recently, but I've mainly been strat finding instead of working on completing a full run
I love these vids
Hey are there any discords for Mario kart tas in general I think I might have found something game breaking in Mario kart 8 and wanted to share
@@MKWilliam i would love the link if you have it

How do you record MK7 in 4k? It looks so good!
Citra emulator
You should cover the wiggler boost on rMT
rMT would definitely be an interesting video, I just know of somebody else in the community who has been working on a video for the track for a really long time so unless they aren't working on it anymore, I don't really want to take away from their efforts
@@MKWilliam Nice. Hopefully they are covering the history of the wiggler boost. Do you know when the video will be done and who is making it?
@@GloobaTSX it's possible it'll be done this summer, I'm not sure. I don't really know exactly what it will cover, I just know they've been working on it for a long time off and on

Maybe one day :). But it's honestly just really cool to be able to have so many people interested in such niche things, the internet can be a really cool place sometimes
the are the best videos
Thanks :)
How did you calculate those odds?
There were 2 ways of calculating the odds, either using the estimate for how small the gap between the checkpoints is or using community data. I ended up just asking the community how many times they had experienced a random respawn and how many total hours they had on the game since it relied on less estimating. I then calculated how frequently players will on average cross a checkpoint. It's likely a little bit off since the sample size was quite small, and also because most of the people that responded had at least experienced it before, but it's hard to say for certain. I did at least try to make sure any bias kept the numbers smaller rather than larger though
