- In this video I take multiple different brands of 350 Chevy oil filters. I didn’t cut them open and take a look at what’s inside of the different filtration elements and gaskets and material make up. Comment down below which one you use and what oil filter is your favorite.
Авто/Мото
Thank you for doing this video. I never thought of a disparity between oil filter designs. Definitely eye-opening on the FRAM.
Yeah well don’t buy orange fram unless you’re changing oil every 4-5k miles
I use the mobile one filter. And I knew Fram was cheap but wow this video explains everything. Never fram
Always run NAPA-Wix filters. The quality control out of Wix Platinum filters is solid. The pleats are thicker & sewn into an internal metal wire mesh that helps the filter media hold up after long periods of hard driving at high oil pressures. They're rated for 10,000 miles but I always change mine every 6k per vehicle manual.
Fram Ultra synthetic is just as good. Buy a cheap filter and it’s going to be cheap, all brands make garbage to compete with each other’s garbage and they make premium ones. You reach diminishing returns eventually with the premium filters.
@@linkgroundwalker No, Fram's lower end stuff's just garbage.
I've always run Wix XP if I can or Napa Gold Purolator is another good brand and Bosch if you can find them
Been using Napa Gold (made by Wix) for over 15 years, with Purolator Pure One as my backup. Used to use Fram until I cut one open after taking it off my car. The filter media had completely separated from the fiber end caps in two spots, and there was a hole where the seams weren’t joined together properly! The filter offered absolutely zero protection! Back then the seam was pieced together with a metal clip, but I believe that they just use glue now on the cheaper filters.
I've always used Fram and never had a problem. Interesting video..thanks....
I've used mostly Wix, have used microgard and Fram, had no problems but I change my oil every 2500 miles no matter what
Sadly, I have used mostly Fram filters but had no filter related problems that I'm aware of. Besides that, I'm surprised at how similar all of the filters are by design with mostly quality differences in material. Good video 👍
Pleat count and total surface area of the filter media for each would be cool to see. Nice video!
All about the same except the Fram its inner filter is made from leftover McDonalds french fries
I always use K&N filters on my truck. The socket lug is not a gimmick and use it for new placement and replacement.
Guess I’m not buying Fram anymore. Thank you sir.
Never enough oil filter scrutiny! LoL
I’ve always gotten K&N and a few fram but I’ll stick to my K&N. Awesome video man.
Yeah, I can't believe how garbage Frams build quality is. Pretty crazy honestly.
Yeah bud. I got an oil filter cuter from amazon (bc racecar) and The micro guard was starting to fall apart and crumple after >500 mi. Haven’t tried wix or fram, but bosh and motorcraft are fine but had rust inside. The mobile 2 is cheaper than k&n but k&n has plastic inner tube. I do like the wrench off part though. Mobile 1 definitely favorite, but the royal purple one was fantastic and cheaper than k&n. It has a metal wire and glass fiber media and after cutting it open, I’m genuinely impressed. (Using castrol edge 5-30 on my vq)
Nice! If I had a canaster style filter car I'd do a after change check to see how they look. I almost bought that cutter but figured I'd save the money and just cut it on a bandsaw.
@@BlakesGarage 😂 yeah. 20psi life, gotta check for glitter 😆
I like using OEM filters (Motorcraft, Mahle). Wix is backup.
OEM is made by someone, most likely Wix
But definitely not making it themselves
Wiz XP filters…. With Pennzoil Ultra Platinum Synthetic
PUROLATOR Boss is THE standard. Period.
For BMWs the best is Hengst, followed very closely by Mann. On BMWs there have been reports of the K&N collapsing in on itself
Can you do a review on the K&N “select” oil filter found at Walmart?
Thanks for the video. Not using Fram anymore.
All these filters brands are good .
For my car i'm using Mahle and it's very nice
Either stock Subaru or Wix, I totally don't trust fram since I've always found surface rust in them and the quality of their rubber etc. To be honest I've never really tried any other filters, I think I had a couple bosh filters on my 91 gti hatch back when I had no idea what I was doing and buying parts from a local German mechanic who is that one mechanic you hold onto for dear life because they're super honest and incredibly helpful. Don't have a euro car anymore so there goes that.
The Wix filter looks to be a synthetic media, that's good.
I’ve always bought the Hp-1004 K&N for my car! The bottom hooks up perfect to a socket, if you’re directly underneath it and put even pressure! I think it’s great! I’ve had trouble with other brands just not coming off easy! It’s pricey but I never want to get another filter stuck on again, what a headache 🤕
I crushed a Fram with a standard metal strap type trying to get it off. Always lubed the gasket and never went further than my hand could tighten the filter when its new, so I dont know why it got stuck. Then later felt the difference in "stoutness" in some other oil filter brands,,, . now I pretty much only buy Wix XP or k&n and try to stock up when they are on sale.
@@dennisgreiwe2078 smart 👍
I like these also 👍
definitely thought mobile 1 would be better for the price
Good general video
You need to do some graphics for comparison
And get into the technology differences such as PTFE Media filter vs PVDF media filters
You showed both. Also microns of filtration etc.. I have also used PTFE (Teflon) for the known properties that Teflon provide to metal surfaces. But I don't really know "everything" that is to be known about why it's good and why it's not
I use Mobil-1
Mostly Mobil 1. Bosch, Purolator, K&N, Honda filters. Never had an issue with any of them.
Thanks Blake
Used to put Frams, since ProjectFarm did a video a couple of years ago, I only put Bosch, Amsoil ans K&N are rather expensive here in my country, Bosch mixes decent quality at good price. 4$ here in Guatemala.
I have to say I was pretty impressed at the microgaurd for the price I'd say it's a great filter. I also thought the K&N was pretty good but definitely a costly choice. Wish I had a Mann Cartrage filter to see what that would look like as I love there filters for BMW's that's basically all I use now.
So Project Farm has a video? First thing, I tried doing a search on his channel, couldn't find it.
@@MattB787 ruclips.net/video/kkdZ_iX-hws/видео.html sorry, it wasn't PFarm, it was this guy, it was like 5 years ago that I watched the video and I was pretty sure it was a PF video but no, it was Dan
@@MattB787 used to and it showed that the ultra synthetic fram was a good filter and should have been what moron here tested against these more expensive filters. Orange fram is crap.
Great breakdown. Going to check out your other videos. Going to stick with k&n.
I've been using Purolator one. They are made by wix. Wix had the white filter lining for full synthetic oil at high mileage change introviles. Purolator boss rated for 15,000 miles, has the same filter lining.
Fram will always be known at the orange can of death for a cars motor. I've always used Wix filters and I think is best along with mobile 1 for long engines life. K&N is best for performance applications.
I use to buy Bosch at Walmart, but now seems they push Fram 😩 Also some filters only do 30 microns vs 20 microns. Some AC have card board in them like the Fram. You get what you pay for!
Mann and Bosch are the best test after test...
Wix xp
Even though this video is somewhat recent, the filters themselves are three years old. Some of the features talked about probably will have been changed by the manufacturers in the past three years.
Yeah, you’re correct these were hanging out in the corner of my garage for at least two years of “oh man I need to make that video” space.
@@BlakesGarage There still was much value in your video. Thanks for making it
Bosch for my car 👍
It’s not listed but a moroso racing filter is top of the line.
Acura RDX, Mobile 1 filter, Mobile 0W-20 full synthetic oil.
Always Mobil one on my Mercedes’ and my Porsche
I use that on my cheap vehicles too still running at over 200k miles
Same I only drive Toyotas and Mercedes Mobil one, Wixom and Purolator has always worked for me along with top tier gas/petrol
You should be using Mann or Bosch.
Wix! Or K&N
Where the hell do I even get a Wix filter? Is it NAPA filters?
Appreciate the time and effort you put into the video, BUT you make a video about filters for a 350 Chevy yet you don’t have an AC Delco filter? Hmm.. As someone who has put 277,000 miles on a 2011 Silverado I’ve only used oem filters. Would have been nice to see the inside of an AC Delco filter.
Unfortunately this was every brand they had at the time.
I use the Purolator Boss.
I don't think you understand how oil filters work. That said, it's nice seeing inside them.
k n and ford racing oil filters
Forgot Fram Ultra, prices are also all over the place, don't get me wrong not a fan of the orange can of death but besides the Microgard all of these are not only significantly better but cost significantly more.
I think the general consensus is every company can make a good product, the debated question is who makes the best product at a certain price.
In defense of the orange can of death end caps don't matter all of that much from a manufacturer/engineer point of view. People meme it saying the end cap is cardboard but it's not, any non synthetic filter will have some cellulose in it, but cellulose will fail across the board at a certain PSI.
The end cap does have some fiberglass in it but it's also rated above in PSI, so if the conditions are right for the end cap to fail, than the conditions are also right for the filter media to fail as well.
That's kinda why end caps material doesn't matter, the filter media will always be the weakest point on a filter, so it will be the first to fail regardless of end cap design. I will say thought, metal does look nicer, and it will cost more, the cheaper end cap will not compromise the filter, as it's more durable. Filters are not that restrictive though, so the pressure on end caps is minimal, I think most consumer oil pumps are rated for 2 gallons per min, most oil filters can easily filter 15 gals per min, so the filter isn't a pressure point.
Wix for any car, truck or tractor except GM motors.
Ac Delco for GM
Never use Fram or Mobil One on anything
Who makes the STP filters?
I believe it's champion filter.
Lol microguard all the way!!
Fram and Motorcraft
Used Fram my entire life and never had an issue.
You’re really trashing fram filters but I can tell you that I’ve used them for years and never had a problem I do use K&N now fram is always been decent to me also your video is based on how good they look not how well they filter
Yeah this definitely isn't science but man they cut costs at every corner. I used to use Fram on my old Ford Mustang back when I was broke. But honestly I wouldn't trust that thing. I feel like internally it could just collapse the cardboard and do some weird stuff.
Vic hit it spot on, this was pretty much a waste of video, if we are going to go by how it looks/feel makes it hard to follow your advice.
@@fabiogallardo9051 yeah this is a fun video to see what's inside sorry I don't have any way of actually testing filtration. But I think build quality says alot about a product. It's the difference between a Kia and a BMW they both do the job but one copycat piece of garbage.
100%; oil filters are commodities. Fram is the OEM for Subaru "blue" and Honda. Differences between designs may matter if you push each filter to the edge of their operating ability, but If you follow your OE recommended change intervals you will be fine.
I enjoyed the video and it brings up a great conversation around this topic - how do you define the "best":
I would argue that the best is the one that does the job without waste. If the O ring is thicker, is that better? Did the thinner one leak? If not, then it's not actually objectively better.
You need to learn what an O ring is.
Fram the death filter
I use mobil1. Wix is decent, k&n and mobil1 are decent but you pay for the name. I've used a bosch cartridge filter and had poor results because the pleats folded over and the glued on ends came loose only a couple hundred miles in. Fram is absolute garbage.
bosch & mann are my go too
Napa gold just as good as any
What about Stp filters
The cheapest Fram vs the more expensive filters...not even close to apples to apples.
K&N
You should be comparing evenly priced filters. That’s a $4 fram filter while the rest are like $15 lol compare the fram ultra to the rest since it’s comparable in price. It’s laughable. Like really. This is no comparison.
Trust me I wish they had more $4 filters to cut up. 😂 this was everything they had for a 350 Chevy
Very scientific
The best filters are the OEM filters. They have been designed to work with the car. Some may be made by some of the brands in this video, but they are made to the manufacturer specifications.
So are the others you 🤡💩. That’s like saying you need to only put oem brakes on your car when the brakes that came with it wear out after 10k miles🤣🤣🤣🤣
Why don’t you test on how well they actually filter?
How??
That’s a great question. You need to contact a business that analyzes oil samples for metal. They can analyze for many different types of metal and amount. You need several engines with similar mileage and replace the oil with new oil, same type for each engine that has been previously analyzed. Then run the engines for the same amount of time and distance. Then compare the before and after metal content for each engine. Then repeat the process but putting on a different filter on each engine again with new analyzed engine oil. You could use one engine but if your testing a lot of filters you could cut your testing time. The engine oil analysts can determine which oil filter traps the most metal particles.
It would also be good to run a control on each engine by not putting on a filter but using a hollowed out filter to compare each control with the filtered oil.
You getting paid to hate on fram
bosch looks good.
Mann
Hardly a scientific survey. I've used each over the years, never any issues or failures. I didn't learn anything from this. Disgruntled former Fram employee?
Fram=cardboard Wtf? No more fram for me ,wix or k&n thanks
Fram is really bad
Fram is crap.
