Sticky tack is your best friend for round objects.
I've always loved flat lay photos, I never realized why until my son became obsessed with ISpy books. All of those shots always simply tell a story. Nice to learn the simple little touches and details, and how much they change a shot.
1:35 Those on-tempo photo changes are so satisfying 🤤
it's a bop
So satisfying. I wish it could go on forever! The photos are stunning too
Peter: “Balance is what you need.”
Thanos: “Just what I was thinking...👌”
Shane Gooden kawhi would agree
😂
As everything should be
LMFAO!!!
As all things should be
I love how you can tell how enthusiastic he is about this. This is his passion and i can 100% tell that he is genuinely happy about what he does. That’s what I’m striving for
I know right. I was feeling it too Lorenzo. I’m excited to get started. Blessings! 🙏🏾❤️
Shutter sound synced with music during showing Denis photos, amazing! So satisfying!
Should’ve also included how to set up the actual camera and find the lighting
He already had such a video
@@youtubeaddict1 link?
@@youtubeaddict1 yeah, please, give us a link.
Sometimes all you need is an open window/natural light. Or a softbox - but in either case it's usually directional light from one side. Experiment!
He should have just taken all the pictures for me so I dont have to learn another hobby.
Peter, I noticed something you said around the 6:20 mark, with regard to placing/arranging large and small objects. I'm a professional artist and one of the things I've learned from the best artists is what is referred to as "unequal distribution of mass" in compositions and you're teaching your viewers how to do just that! You've made photography an art form. The thing I love most about your work is your attention to detail. Absolutely love your enthusiasm. It's infectious and inspiring. More, please.
Sweet editing Mr McKinnon! The beat with the Photos, the bottle cap noise. Love it!
I love how the cracks, the textures, create a narrative-maybe beyond the visual even. Peter's videos have really helped me to fall in love with photography (and making photos).
Dang! I just listened to this on an actual speaker and not just my laptop speakers, the audio on that intro is so fresh!!
You did a video a while back called "Product Photography". It inspired me to do a top down photo for a thumbnail of my review of the Ring Video Doorbell. It was very well received and now it's my #1 viewed video. Thank you for all your tutorials. They have helped me SO much.
PRO TIP......Make friendships with flooring companies!! You can get your hands on some good flooring samples that they no longer use
Kevin Myers This has been in my mind. I was even thinking of attending a convention or conference or trade event on flooring and surfaces ala-NABB!
Great tip! Thank you for that!
Kevin Myers wow that’s a super good idea. Thanks for the tip man!
Great idea!
Kevin Myers absolute genius
I unintentionally took a photo with the principles that you explained in this video. I did not realize it was the details that made the photo looks so much better than if there were no details.
This video/Peter's Channel is a great example of why you SHOULD be able to post images as RUclips comments. Would be great to see people's work as a comparison.
Agreed
The passion you give off is how I hope my clients see me when I talk to them about their website. I probably end up sounding like a screaming lunatic, but in my head it comes off just like this. Thank You for your videos. I'm fairly new to photography and your approach really works with me. Best of luck to you and yours.
you should make a videos about food photography
He did one with his buddy Dennis the Prescott awhile back.Highly recommend his Instagram and RUclips!! I discovered him through Peter :)
Ya
Dennistheprescott does insane shots ... It seems simple when you see him do it but man you can never replicate that , it's always close to perfection , CRAZY good
At first glance I thought it was food pornography😂😂😂
I wholeheartedly agree
As soon as this video was over, I grabbed my camera and immediately started shooting flat lay photos! Learned so much from this tutorial, so thank you!
This has to be one of your best lessons yet! I've been thinking of going into product photography and this technic has really inspired me.
Captain Jack I too was thinking of product photography! It’s so cool and brands will pay you lots of money for it. Do you have an Instagram?
I'm glad I'm not the only one who has to do multiple takes when I'm talking! Sometimes I almost feel like I'm speaking a foreign language and the words don't make sense any more. Another awesome video, as always. Thanks for the tips!
in the middle of the night and i´m still awake to watch your video! Greets from Berlin Germany

12 minutes of intense awesomeness and proof why this legend is known as Lord Pete!
Thanks for inspiring us photographers/filmmakers out there
Yes
Your films are good Tom. New sub
Enjoying the BTS at the end because the video definitely makes it seem like setting the items up is accomplished quickly!
Great video man! Really great tips and the way you break it down makes so much sense and is really quite simple 👌
NEVER STOP MAKING VIDEOS! I enjoy everything you create/teach/share.
Definitely learned a lot and really enjoy learning from you!! Keep it up
Balance.... Creamy.... crystal clear.... color symmetry.... and interesting. That's what makes the photo. NICE JOB with yours Peter!! I thoroughly enjoyed the lesson!
Loved this video... learned some really cool things i can definitely put to work. Awesome work pete!!
I am literally doing this right now for my ecommerce website, and need some inspiration. My flat boards, light box and products are 3 feet from my left arm. PERFECT PERFECT timing! Thank you Petrus!
Hands down best video you have done in awhile. I hope you do more product photography videos maybe talk about how to light product photography In the next one but I think it’s what you are the best at and I just started a EDC Instagram account and this video really helped me out a lot and gave me so many ideas for EDC pictures I wanna take! Thanks Pete!!
Hi there..i really like the photos shown on this video.. do you have any idea on the camera settings on this? (apperture, speed, iso, photoshop filters etc etc.).. any help would be appreciated. thanks in advance and goodluck on your EDC instagram
Love that you share your passions and tips/tricks with the world. Seeing you set-up and prepare that flat-lay at the end makes me wish we could have a vlog/video/series shot by someone else where you're the one intently working and showing everyone that you not only share the things, you DO the things. Let the world see you walk the walk, too!
Peter you make youtube! Thank you for all your videos and tuts!
Idk about anyone else but the shutter sound effects with the transitions was super satisfying 😂😂
Thanks Pet, I sometimes loose my inspiration in photography, but you always bring it back with videos like this one 👊
You're either from Up North over here in the UK, or your phone autocorrected Pete to Pet. 🤔
This bloke is a genius!
It's 4am in India and I am here to watch your video!!

Love your videos and your ideas. Since I started with photography I didn't know nothing now I can say that I'm not really bad. Thanks to God for people like you! Enjoying all time 😊
Oh yes I need to try this! What a great tip :-)
You’re literally growing up right before our eyes 😍😢. You’re not wearing a black shirt, with an owl hat and long hair. I’m loving this green shirt short hair Peter!
If it's a tutorial where's the
PFSWHAT'S UP EVERYBODY?
I always wondered what a good way to spell that would be. Well done.
He gave a small one in the collab with MKBHD
Thelack of PFWATSUP makes this the best video he’s ever done.
The intro means everything to us 😊.
Need that "WUTS UP" lol
Peter, your use of window light is very inspiring to me. I did a newborn photo shoot using window light, and a lamp, and also made a little drone, b-roll video, 00:59 long, using 100% window light. Keep up the awesome work, videos, and influence! You are the best personality on RUclips!
Hair cut!!! Damnnnnn. Nicely done with the video as always. Much peace and love.
I find myself watching your back catalog more and more often. Always leave me with so much inspiration and aspirations to improve on my work. I have a little hack, I have many samples of wallpaper, and use them as the base for my flat lay photos. I think there is so much variety and it's cheap, and when it's ruined you simply roll out more.
waaaait a minute!!! i think you need to show how you create your notes. That sneak peek looked dope!
Peter this video is jam packed with incredible tips. I'm not a real photographer nor do o aspire to be, BUT I have a bunch of photography gear that I'd like to use for business. I'd been struggling with flat lays and you just changed my world. Thank you for this buddy. Love your channel and love this video.
Pete! You gotta paint your wall-vent to match your wall. Sticking out like a sore thumb. Its easy: 4 screws, a 1-inch paint brush and do 2 coats.
I like how the bloopers let you see the actual creative process. So nice!
Hey man I love the videos I learned form your videos and now 3 months into photography i am making good money thanks for your videos.
How did you start making money if you don't mind me asking?

Better get on the ball! Your pops is out doing you, you young whipper snapper! Lol. Just kidding. Your pops has actually given me some new found inspiration. It’s just amazing what’s he’s doing.
1:34 OMG! That click synchronized with the music :O
I just took screenshots of your rapid fire flat lay shots to observe and learn. Thank you Peter McKinnon. 🙌🏻
Colour scheme plays a big part as well.
I'm going to try this, but I'm going to make the picture using items from around the various offices within the company, so that each will have a unique contribution in a way that compliments the whole. Also, when everyone inside the company sees the final photo, they will say "Hey, that's my pen...", etc. allowing everyone to celebrate in their own way.=, creating a great piece to market to potential customers, but also to accomplish what I call "internal marketing" to the people within our company. Thanks for all you do Peter!
Pleas do a vlog on how you makes you videos from idea to how you plan it, plan you shots, and how you get the shots, makes that perfect timeline 👌🏻🙏🏼
Thanks for the tips. I struggle with adding depth to my flat lay photos and not taking away from the product itself. I appreciate the tips you shared.
Me: "I dunno how these IG guys think through those top-down shots... would be really cool thing to do for the National Park Service site where I volunteer's museum item of the week series...."
Peter: "FLAT LAY PHOTOGRAPHY, YO!!!"
Me: "Get the F out of my head, Peter! This is like the 4th damn time you've done this."
That office space at your home just rocks!
The flat lays that I gravitate to are the forest floor. I can go from ambient light to flash with modifiers, reflectors and flags. It doesn’t hurt to include moving water and snow.
Super cool concept!
Not judging! It's your toolkit. I dig it actually. This photography is fun in so many ways. I love it when it's done with food.
Thanks for the knowledge bombs and vid Peter.
Peter: "opposed to shooting on a white flat no reflection IKEA desk"
Me sitting at my white IKEA desk: :(

Ha!
It's time to wrinkle up a t-shirt! 😁
This is why you inspire me BIG TIME - your passion.
Great video! Could you make a follow up about how to light these types of photos?
Peter you are the man! Jumped up this morning, found this video (sorry it's 3 year late, my bad bro') and shot a flat scene using items from my trip to Hannibal Mo. Now I'm looking for video of that new studio from 2019! Thanks so much!
Nice the KrewKast music ( is a German podcast for technic stuff) 😂
Ich bin schockiert! ich bin wirklich erschrocken xD

Yup! As a graphic designer hierarchy is HUGE! And in a way a flat lay is like designing a page layout.

Who else would love to have a peek into Petes notes? 🤓
Peter, show us your notes!!! :)
Leon Saß I would! This guy never seems to run out of great ideas...until he does and he makes a video about it haha😂
Off topic, but the absolute delight in your face when you said "My wife bought me this." :')
But what about the actual taking of the photo, Pete? Like where are the tips on how to actually take the photo and get it perfectly top down without it being at an uncomfortable slight angle? And what focal length do you recommend? Stuff like that?
This is what I was hoping for as well... Maybe next one..
That's where you'll have to experiment with... 😁

You are one of the most influential individual / Every time I watch your videos I end it off saying to myself "That's My Boy" / Keep up the great work / You helped me shape the videographer I'm becoming!
I instinctively cringe when I see a $240 ND filter sitting on the floor.
I did too. 🤦♀️😬
That's my whole gear worth :O
I used to do a lot of intricate flat lays but it takes sooooo long that I was spending hours every day just to get one photo for Instagram that people are gonna scroll past in 1.5 seconds. Then do it all over again the next day. Just didn't make sense time wise to continue doing it. But you have inspired me so maybe I will try to do them from time to time. Also, using fabric as your background can really help with objects that roll.... like pencils and paint brushes, etc.
