  • Wood Shed Build - Part 2. Levelling the ground. Setting Deck Blocks. outdoor channel.
Back at it today to finish levelling the ground and setting my deck blocks for the wood shed build. I use an interesting way to find level, and learn a few new things along the way.
Please note I am not a craftsman or skilled carpenter. The manner in which I am building the shed may not be the best or the correct way of doing it - it's just the way I am doing it. Hope you enjoy it.

On those blocks just get them set, level and close to where they need to be. you can cut wood spacers to place between the joist and the block to get things level. no need to dig out from under the blocks or add material under the blocks. I’m like you not a professional just sharing how I have used those blocks in the past. My shed is still level 12 years later.

If you had done better in your high school physics class, you won't have doubted the accuracy of a water level. As long as there is no air bubbles or ice in the tube, it can't be wrong. Cheers.

The old guys used water levels to build 100 ft. barns back in the day. Every bit as good as any tecky stuff they have today.

How's she goin'? Gord I have built many sheds and buildings over the years and what I have found out is we usually over do the construction details. The main thing is, are you content with the structure. Being as how we aren't structural engineers, our building practices may not be a professional grade, but we can all build sturdy and safe buildings by doing what you are doing. And if we feel safe and comfortable with what we have done, then the goal has been attained!!! Great start and looking forward to seeing the shed come together!! Take are!!

I don't get it. Unless you are building on bedrock, those blocks will sink to off level eventually.

Easy one man way to get grade on the ground is string, a string level and a tape measure.... Place your string at any height you want from stake to stake, mine is usually waist high so I don't have to bend to far over to read measures. 😀... Level your string and measure from the string down to the ground to see how much fill you need to equal your high spot measure from string to ground. Simple, very effective, and I've used it out up to 60 feet and got grade pretty accurate. Not laser accurate but darn good enough... Just got to move one end, usually low side, re-leveling string, from place to place checking grade of the area you want leveled... I did my 30x30 shop this way and not a low nor high spot anywhere before concrete pour. 👍

Great video Gord . Crusher run is great stuff . We use that name down here . When I built my shed 6 years ago I dug 2ft holes and filled them with crusher run . Pound it down really hard and it turns almost like cement . Put the blocks on top . My shed is 10X12 . Hasn't moved and inch . Put a 1/4 screen between the deck and the ground to keep out the critters from living underneath . My 3 neighbours didn't do that and now they have skunk problems . Of course you won't need to do that . The hardest part of building these days is finding the lumber . Lumber prices have gone through the roof . I always over build . That shed is going to be there for years after I'm gone . I always wanted to build my own cottage but never did . I built that shed just like the way I would have built a cottage . No short cuts . With Guy having a sawmill I would have thought that you might have cut some lumber for the shed . You had some pretty good size logs there to cut many boards . Take care .

Good day Gp I used the chip and dust for a Second driveway. I put 4 inches and Contacted and it’s been good for 8 years now my wife parks her school bus on in every school year for the past seven years. And remember that there maybe a better way “ I don’t know of one” but there’s no wrong way. Have a good day
