  • I had the pleasure of doing a tour of the South Tower of Cologne Cathedral while I was staying in Germany, and at the end the full peal rang out! I didn't record the whole thing but here is a collection of snippets for you to enjoy. It was so loud all you could hear was hummmmmmmmmmm.
This video is dedicated to my friend Peter Maddams :))

When the full peal started, that must have been such an intense atmosphere... Tons upon tons of metal swinging around with a defening hum

It must’ve been loud I’d think, at least over 120 decibels almost enough to cause ear damage!

@@sebastiangrunewald9094 The people visiting the bell tower (South Tower), are given head phones to wear to protect their hearing.

@@sebastiangrunewald9094 beh ma nel 1925 quando suonava con il vecchio sistema con il motore che tirava la corda suonava ancora più forte

The sound of cathedral bells is very healing as it resonates throughout the body. Thanks for posting this!

Its hard to imagine how it have felt to see this magnificent structure not only be built as you go about your day but as someone seeing and hearing this for the first time when never seeing anything like it before. It must have been life changing

Das "hmmmmmm" geht tatsächlich durch Mark und Bein. Hab es auch schon live erleben können. Welche Geläute wirst du auf deiner Deutschland-Tour noch besuchen?

You lucky so - and - so ! How did you manage to be in the right place at the right time? Surprising some elfansafety do - gooder allowed it, the noise must have been deafening!
I've been up Koln tower 2ce, the first when I was 9, I was so scared it would collapse, mother should have told me it was hit by 70 bombs during WW2, I recently checked this story, more like 14 explosive bombs and the rest were those little incendiary thingies. 2/3 of the vault collapsed, we are lucky to still have the cathedral :)
Since then, the internet has convinced itself I want to go there and do the walking tour and the river cruise, yes, I have already done it! And I can read a map!
Ulm is a really scary ascent, and you can get higher up. Definitely recommended,

I don't think this bell is named great peter I think it's named St Peter's bell which the other name was in York Minster's

Yes, the dedication of the bell is St. Petersglocke. However the locals call it “Dicke Pitter” which literally translated means “Fat/ Big Peter” - therefore Great Peter :)
