I’m glad to see Little Shop of Horrors nominated. That animatronic for Audrey II still holds up very well today and is still believeable as a living creature with its own goals and personality, even if it’s for world domination. The upcoming reboot can never top this animatronic or the puppeteering put into it.
Update: Never mind, the reboot’s been canceled according to Taron Edgerton, who was supposed to play Seymour.

really curious what's up with that audio about the 4 minute mark onward, couldn't even hear them announce Aliens, and what I do hear I thought it was a hot mic or something but the voice sounds too comical, or maybe a young child speaking gibberish, and there's the clear sound of a sprinkler which doesn't make any sense

  • @ManiacKomplex

man they really sucked at producing these award shows back in the 80s. interesting tho, 2 movies involving Giger art going up against each other for an award. One featuring his actual designs, Poltergeist 2, and the other heavily influenced by but NOT done by the actual artist, Aliens. i wonder how many times this has happened in the history of the academy awards

And it's a severe shame that The Voyage Home didn't get a visual effects nomination this year because the work ILM did on that Star Trek film remains impressive and near seamless to this day. It literally fooled people into thinking they photographed and used real whales when they were full animatronics, aside from a bit of stock footage. The matte paintings, model work, and optical composites are magnificent!

    • @craigdavidson5613
      @craigdavidson5613 9 месяцев назад

I know. This marked the only year in the decade where ILM didn't win anything. Heck, none of their films that year received any nominations. They instead nominated Stan Winston and the Skotak brothers for Aliens (the winner), Lyle Conway and Associates & Ferren for Little Shop of Horrors, and Richard Edlund and Boss Film Corporation for Poltergeist II: The Other Side. The latter being the only thing close to ILM as you could get that year.

How did Leonard Nimoy screw up the Announcement of the Winner for Best Special Effects?
He read the Winner before the "Clips" for each had finished! "Their Here" or "Their Back" was played over Leonard's Announcement of the Winners..it appeared to be a very awkward moment for Bill. Who must have seen that Nimoy was wearing HUGE GLASSES (remind anyone of the Revenge of the Nerds?) and thereby "possibly" missing a "Pause" on the teleprompter and then to just "Blurt" out the Winner at Percisely the wrong MOMENT!
OMG! William Shanter must have been going OUT OF HIS MIND!
And as the Nominated had to just sit and wait until it was the right
time/moment for them to react to their Win, it only added to their MISSING of that Memorable Moment of the Announcement!
    It is truly Heartbreaking.!
    How bad is this?
    On a scale of 1 to 10 it's a
$100,000.00 mistake and l'm surprised l didn't hear more about it at the time.
But I was going thru a Divorce with my 1st Wife, (my High School Sweetheart) and was dating my Bosses 18 year old daughter(I was 24 in 86') so l kind of missed it.
But from the clips l've watched of the 1987 Academy Awards there seemed to be LOTS of Technical issues with the Broadcast so let's give Leonard the benefit of the doubt...
    He is Definitely
"Not Spock" at this moment forever captured on Flim..
Ps, it almost looks like they each had the other's "Hairstyle" from the Original Series!
Was this by Plan or by Accident?
    Can you see it?
    WOW!

I had to re-watch it to understand what you mean (I'm not very familiar with award shows, I'm Swiss lol), but YES! Suzanne benson was the wife of LA effects director that were fired of the Visual effects for aliens, and replaced by Brian Johnson. In fact Brian johnson should have had the awards.
