The big carroussel is inside, because it is over 100 yrs old. And the Efteling people are not "thrill ride builders", they're story tellers. And it shows. Nice to see you enjoy our Dutch park so much.

It's so refreshing to see this park from an "outsider". Most Dutch people just grow up with a regularly visit to the park so they see it as normal/the standard. But seeing it from a different perspective you really get to appreciate what kind of a special thing we have. Thanks for the extended video!

Glad you liked it. This park is really a national treasure and its almost like a theme park museum. Like 95% of all the Dutch visited at least once for generations. They dont like to replace rides here unless they really have too, but rather try to keep it as is and take good care of them to preserve everyones favorite childhood memories.

I could recommend any foreigner who goes to the Efteling to invite a Dutch person who knows a bit about the park. There is such a long history to the park and the rides, so many details you can easily miss on your first trip, many back stories to the rides that are only in Dutch, little Dutch delicacies to try out. (Why yes, i WOULD recommend myself, haha)

It's actually contected to a story nowadays. A story of a king with 5 sons. Each son had a sense that was out of the ordinary. The king remarried and got a daughter. By the time she was 14 all of er brothers moved out. One day the king and queen died but the king wasn't able to name his legacy. The sons went home to their own castles because they were overthrown with grief and weren't able to rule the land. But the sister got them back together because the people of the land started riotting. She had a gift of bringing people together. Now they all live in the palace of the 5 senses to rule over the land. The end. This is the short version anyway.

Oh man, I am so happy you truly enjoyed this park. It's made to enjoy and experience at a slower pace. Thrillseekers often seem to have a hard time, simply don't understanding and just being freaked out by the "weirdness". It's a different mindset I guess. Taking in the sights, having a picknick (you can bring your own food and drink from home, don't need to buy it in the park - although it's relatively cheap), getting lost. I can't imagine my childhood without wandering, and discovering. Peeking through all the toadstool windows and enjoying all the moments. So glad you also took time to do this, and not be as rushed as in the previous vids. Don't know if you've been to, or are going to Phantasialand. It's amazing as well, on the other end of the scale. High thrills and such. Either way thanks for these vlogs, they are very welcome in current times.

Like you said about the park being different with the seasons, You just absolutely have to try the winter Efteling, it makes the whole park even more magical than it already is. Every inch is winterthemed decorated, people singing carols, you can ice skate in the park and even more traditional dutch winter foods to complete the whole experience. Last year was my first time winter efteling and i felt the same magic from my first efteling visit when i was 5.

When Baron 1898 opened, some of my friends and I went to Efteling to do shrooms and go absolutely out of our minds on the new dive coaster. We ended up spending half the day in the fairy tale forest before going on an actual ride even came to mind. ;)
I've been to many theme/amusement parks around the globe, but the unique weirdness, the fact about every ride has its own, unique story and a lot even have their own soundtrack, the amount of care they put in their operations, maintenance and creating a magickal atmosphere, the landscaping, design, the authenticity, history, natural elements and the location make it my number one theme park in the world to which I returned many times.

Fun Fact about the boat rides 'Gondaletta' and 'Fata Morgana'. Fata was actually planned on the central lake in a different form. You would float around the lake and on the island you now go around there would have been the palace which you entered with the boat. After the dark ride part the boat would leave the palace again and return to the station.
Tho the ride system was still kinda in development and the island was/is kinda protected for wild life. So they made 'Gondaletta' as a bit of a prototype and due to it's success it stayed as was.
The continued developing the design (different boats etc) and used this for Morgana in a show building.

The place with the Snail Ride has its own little story attached that is hard to 'get' when you're not Dutch. It's more aimed for children as well, the entire area.
It is the Land of the Laaf, the Laaf being a race of people who had been on the run from terrible oppressors and dug their way into Kaatsheuvel where they ended up at the Efteling. They met the children at the park and were immediately enamoured and decided to found a new village. The snail ride used to be a self-pedaling ride way back at the beginning. But people ended up stopping in the middle of the track and blocking the ride for others so they automated it.

The story of villa volta: in the 18th century there was a group of criminals that called themself bokkenrijders (goat riders), they lived in that part of The Netherlands. In the first room you hear some people tell about how bad they are and an introduction of who they are. In the second room you see the leader of the bokkenrijders that tells this story: one day he and his group were in Belgium, it was getting late so they were looking for a place to stay that night. They saw the abby of Postel and went there. When they arrived there was no-one so they went in and started to rob the place. Suddenly a white ghostly woman was behind them and was very angry and warned about God and that they will get a lot of problems if they rob the place. Hugo (the leader) didn't care and kept going. When Hugo came home (Villa volta is his home) the woman was on the roof (the statue on the roof is her) and cursed the house. Zo everything starts turning etc. Only when someone with a clean conscience enter the house the cursee will dissapear. So Hugo asks the visitors to help him and enter the house.

    • @Flup2
      @Flup2 4 года назад +12

Keep in mind the curse will only be lifted when a pure soul enters the house. The ghostly female apparition literally says: "as clean as the soul of a newborn child".
However, the house is still going to spin around, the curse is not lifted, insinuating that no one in the room had a clean soul. We're all sinners according to the Efteling, and the funny thing is, they're probably right!

Additional fun. The steam-engine caroussel was a thing the original owner/creators of the park wanted in because they were enormous fans of the things. When the park finally changed hands, one of the contract points was that it would always remain a maintained part of the park. And so it is one of the oldest, original and well-maintained steampowered caroussels around.
The same building also houses a water-fountain musical show and a whole train diorama.

7:31 I kinda disagree, if not for nostalgia then because the technique behind them is very interesting. Most of the animatronics do not contain any motors (the only exception being the larger aniamtronics). Instead the different moveable parts are connected to wires, which are pulled by a machine below the animatronic. The machine consists of a series of code wheels with rollers on them (similar to what you would find inside a music box). The entire stack of wheels is rotated, which causes the rollers to move up and down. These rollers in turn pull on the cables to move the animatronic. the movement of the animatronic is programmed in the shape of the wheels ^^

About Villa Volta. I guess not being able to understand Dutch makes it hard to follow the story. It's about Hugo from the Loonsche Duinen (an area of natural beauty nearby) who was part of a goatrider gang that plagued the nearby towns many years ago. One day he and his gang stole all the gold from a church. An angel tried to stop him, but he laughed the angel away. When he came back to his estate, he saw the angel again. The angel had cursed his house. "Nowhere here, nor in the entire world, will you find peace until one with the pure conscience of a newborn baby enters this house." The pre-show is basically Hugo begging the visitors to enter the house to see if they are pure enough so the curse can be lifted. And of course, the curse hasn't been lifted and we get to experience all of it. ;-)

Maybe someone told you already, but just in case they haven't: Story of Villa Volta.
In the middle ages, in an area on the Belgium-Netherlands border called 'De Kempen', there once was a satanic band of thieves called the Buckriders. These guys would rob as they pleased, kill if they desired, and disappeared without a trace leaving only a goat's leg as a souvenir. Because of this, people believed they had made a pact with the devil and that they could ride across the sky on giant goats.
Now the attraction tells the story of Hugo, the leader of his faction of the band. He tells that one night him and his men rode out across the moorlands, only for a single church to suddenly appear in the distance. They rode up, broke in, and were immediately bewitched by the piles and piles of gold and offerings on the altar. They were about to grab it when a white woman (another Dutch mythological being) suddenly appeared before him, warning him not to steal from God. Hugo, did not heed it.
So as he returned back to his villa, he saw the lady standing on his roof, waving her arms as she cried: "Never again shall you find peace in your own home. Only if a man with the innocence of a newborn enters, shall your curse be broken."
And that's where the people come in, invited by Hugo himself in the hopes someone can bring back peace to his house. (So far, no success.)

I absolutely love the Efteling, even though I haven't been there for 20 years now, I will go back some day. But your equipment needs an update. It's too dark on the inside footage and the sound is very quickly distorted when there's a bit of volume

My most fave attraction is the Fata Morgana. I was 7 years old when I went to the Efteling for the first time and that was in 1992. It was the most beautiful attraction in that time and I never forget the feeling I had as a child when I was on that ride. I think the music of that attraction is still amazing! I also love the music of Villa Volta.

The octopus restaurant is in the place where there used to be an early 3d ("4d" movie) about wildlife, hence the overkill theming for a pretty standard restaurant.

I have great memories of the bobsled in Efteling. Sadly it’s replaced, although it’s very unlikely that I will ever visit the park again. I always thought that the ticket price was high, until I visited parks in the USA… Efteling has a lot to offer for a fraction of the price.

So some of the heat against the teacup ride (monsieur cannibale):
The ride features a large caricature african canibal with a bone through its nose, cooking the guests for dinner. Besides that caricature representation of african tribal life it is also in French which only emphasizes the colonial views of africa. There are actually also some dubious implications in Carnival Festival, Fata Morgana and Piraña with complete misrepresentations of cultures, but who the hell goes to the efteling for that anyways, besides there are a lot of european caricatures as well.
Hope this info is interesting to someone :)

It is based on an old French song by Sacha Distel ruclips.net/video/VgnhHF0BEeQ/видео.html Efteling opened in 1952 so some of the attractions are decades old when people had different attitudes. I don't understand the brouhaha about Carnival Festival, sure it shows national stereotypes, but it also does that for the Dutch and many other European nationalities. Are there any Chinese or Japanese who are offended about it? Or is it just whiny Dutch people with nothing better to do who complain?

Sadly you didn't even realise you had another awesome "theme park" credit!?
Now that I'm ranting. (apologies). Pagoda works on a counterweight, NOT A CRANE ARM!
oh!, by the way, the Halve Maan is the largest swinging boat ride in the world, also a super credit.🌼
Here in the Netherlands, we love Efteling.....We don't have a storybook forest. Instead, we have the worlds oldest fairy tale forest, based on the fables from Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Anderson.
Disney was inspired by Efteling. xxx
So next time you see sleeping beauty...remember the prince didn't just kiss the sleeping beauty, he totally ...... ?
Toto you are not in Disneyland.

Probably someone already mentioned this, the backstory of the madhouse villa volta is based on a dutch/belgian folk etymology of the buckriders and it's focussing on the leader of the raiders which tarded faith and will never get rest in his house

Nope. Walt Disney never visited Efteling as is was just a sport and recreation park, with a kids playground, when he visited the studios doing the Dutch versions of the movies in 1951. The Fairytale Forest opened in 1952, a year after Disney visited the Netherlands. He did visit Tivoli in Copenhagen though.

villa volla is about robbers. They rob a church when the leader feels a slim hand on his shoulder. The woman told him to leave everything and go home. They went home, but took the stuff with them. When the leader came home, the woman was stanf i ng outside on his toof. Saying only a person with a pure heart could lift it. Thats the spinning you do in the main room. Thats the curse.
