@@H1SCOTTY What most people forget is the time of writing the stories. Grimm and Anderson told stories to warn. Bit like 'don't touch fire', and, what they couldn't have known because they just didn't have the science figured out yet. But that has other consequences too, most Americans are shocked to see a bra-less mermaid, whereas that is perfectly reasonable in Europe. Oh well, call it culturel differences.

Glad you enjoyed it! However, one of the best things about Efteling is the nature and landscaping, with all the beautiful greenery and flowers. There's also a TON of construction going on this year. Can definitely recommend going in summer and preferably after the Grand Hotel and new spooky area and ride, Danse Macabre, is completed.

Fun fact. Efteling opened before Disneyland.
Walt Disney learned about it's construction and also about the fairy tale park in Copenhagen's Tivoli Park (Hans Christian Andersen was from Denmark) and then decided to create Disneyland!

The Efteling is definitely not the only amusement park in the Netherlands. There are quite a few of them like Walibi, Duinrell, Slagharen and Toverland. If you like rollercoasters then Walibi might be the better option, but if you also enjoy darkrides the Efteling is not just one of the best in the Netherlands, but also in all of Europe

So good to see you at the Efteling park! The most amazing park from my childhood. It's all about fairytales and family.
Also in the Bosrijk and Loonsche Land park cottages and hotels.Amazing feeling. It goes way back into the 1950's.
It's all about magic. Just to be, once, in a magic like fairytale forest place.... For me it was (because we could not afford it once more).
Please remember that, when you go trhough the park. It's not a thrill seeking park like ALL things are roaler coaster stuff. Of course, there ARE some surprises!
Please come back in spring or summer with some weather that's pretty cool ... to say the least! Blue skies, sun. I'm not kidding! It's real!
Or not, depending on the day. It can be rainy. Sorry, but the weather can be, sometimes, unpredictable. Please check the local weather app.
Some better views and experiences in spring and summer times, but also: longer lines.
Well, hope to see you soon!

I was at the Efteling as well last week! Crazy that I could've bummed into you guys since I've been following the channel for a while now (And yes, I was one of those people that stayed in the ride to go for another round right away ;) ).
As for my favorite themepark it is Europapark (located in Germany). It's about a 4-6 hour drive from NL depending on where you're from and it's amazing. The theme of the park is (as the name suggest) countries in Europe, so it's a perfect way to get familiar with many different countries. Something great about it (aside from the awesome rides and general theming of the park) is that every "country" within the park serves the food that is known from that real country (poffertjes in NL, pizza in Italy, tapas in Spain, you name it). So if you haven't been yet I would highly recommend!

The Efteling park is really great, it is so nice to see you enjoy it :) I think that all the small theming details in the park make it my favorite park by far. Despite the weather, you chose a great day to go to the park, because normal lines take 30-60 minutes depending on the ride. Symbolica and Baron 1898 are always really busy. I expect the new attraction called "Danse Macabre" will be epic when it is done, and I also expect it to have really long lines... Looking forward to part 2!

Efteling is one of the best parks in Europe so it's definitely the best park in The Netherlands, hands down. It is said Walt Disney himself came to check out the park while he was in The Netherlands in what, the 60s? Though it hasn't been confirmed. Efteling's quality indoor rides give a lot of Disney rides a run for their money.
Other Dutch theme parks that come to mind are Walibi Holland, perhaps Drievliet... the latter being quite small and located not far from Rotterdam.
I can also recommend Bobbejaanland just across the border in Belgium. Great fun.
Still would like to go to Europapark in Germany or Energylandia in Poland.

The older part of the Efteling remains my favorite. It is family friendly, so the rides aren't too intense though. But very few parks can match the Efteling for its amount of love and detail. The carnival to my mind is an hideous example of stereotyping, but it has a strong local relation. If anything could be removed to make space for a new thing, that would be it.
My favorite ride was/is the "Spookslot", not a ride, but a walk with a diorama type theatre that would display a ghost story on the music of "Dance Macabre". That was so excellently choreographed. But I heard they wanted to replace it because of low attendance numbers.
Two days isn't quite enough anyway,.. try again late summer on a rainy day. Chances are that by the time you get there, the weather cleared up and everyone else stayed home.

    • @tijmen24nl
      @tijmen24nl Год назад

Spookslot was mainly removed because the building just wasn't up to scratch anymore, so they chose to replace it with something better!
Its now being replaced by danse macabre! And yes the music is staying, even better the new attractions focus is even more on the music. The story as far as we know now is based around the orchestra that played the piece which mysteriously vanished near a old monastery.
Efteling has now posted 2 making offs and a few blog post revealing parts of the new attractions!

Apart from that Duinrel near The Hague, Avonturenpark Hellendoorn near Overijssel, or what you think about Ponypark Slagharen or Plopsaland Coevorden? Last three are more catered to little children though. Walibi and Efteling can be for children and adolescents alike.

It's not the best season to visit the Efteling due to many maintenance happening atm, and the 2 building pits for a new hotel near the entrance and the replacement of the old Spookslot --> Danse Macabre (both a ghost story but it's going from a walkthrough to an actual ride system) the area will be (re)themed along with it keeping the creepy atmosphere
Efteling always has the aim to make it feel nostalgic, you can see that at the soon to open store/restroom near Danse Macabre's build pit it looks old, weathered and crooked etc. as if it's 100+ years old, but it's newly build ...
And everything they do is linked to a fairy tale (Some tales not or lesser known outside Europe/NL) or myths/folklore -either based on real stories or made up by Efteling them selves
Symbolica being an exception as that's the home of the park mascot(s) and his/their king and this dark ride should be sort of seen like the Castles in Disney Parks It marks the center-ish of the park

The Efteling is not Disney. That’s for sure. How the Efteling came to be is also different from Disney. The Efteling was in de beginning just a small park with just 10 fairytales, playground, swimming pool and tennis courts in 1952.
The real heart of the park is from Anton Pieck and Peter Reijnders. Anton Pieck made drawings how is should look and Peter Reijnders brought them to life. Sleeping beauty has been breathing from the start predating anything in the Disney Parks. The Efteling pushes what is possible with attractions. A lot of attractions where first of it’s type and development together with the Efteling.
The Efteling is not just Grimm. They use fairytales and legends from multiple writers. They tend to stay closer to the source material then Disney which is why it’s a bit darker.
The Efteling does not work with external investors or stockholders. Everything in the park has been paid with money brought in by the visitors. The budget of the Efteling is also a lot smaller than Disney.
Persistent rumor is that Walt Disney visited the Efteling prior to the announcement of Disneyland. What is true is that the imagineers of Disney visit the Efteling a lot. The designers of Efteling visit Disney.

Toverland in the Netherlands, Phantasialand and Europa park (can’t choose) in Germany are the best in Europe. I love the Efteling when I am with kids, I don’t feel it is a park most adults and especially teenagers will appreciate much. (As I have found out a few years ago when going there with a 15 year old)
Efteling is great for families, including grand parents. And for kids until the age of 12-13 max. However people that are really into theme parks should appreciate the high level quality and history attached to this park. Just look at the steam carrousel, fairy tale forest and the fact it has a museum.
I feel Toverland has the potential to in time get close to the Efteling, they just need more high quality dark rides. But they do have a great thrill ride setup. The Efteling has one MAJOR advantage, very loyal visitors who love to take their (grand)children to get the same experience they had when they were little. You have to keep this in mind when visiting as foreigners, that the Efteling has a very special place in many hearts of Dutch people.
If you purely look at the rides, than you can get a wrong image of the park. They tend to be highly themed but short, and less thrilling on purpose.

Efteling is definately our favorite. I've been to Disney Paris, but didn't like it at all. It just misses that Efteling magic and it's way too expensive. Being Dutch I must have visited like a dozen times by now. But two of my favorite times was when my parents invited the whole family over to celebrate their wedding anniversary. First time (40 years anniversary) they book us (me, hubby and two small kids at the time) in the circus room. It had a trapeze which played music and a huge bubble bath (my kids could swim in it) with a bubble machine mounted next to it. It was so much fun! for their 50th they rented a 12 people villa in Bosrijk and it was just so cosy and wonderfull there. Other favorites of ours not in the Netherlands, but easy to travel to are Legoland Billund and Nigloland France (that's the park where we always close of our French camping vacations before heading back home)

Don't know if it's true, but another rumour that Anton Pieck ordered the builders to work lefthanded if they where righthanded and vice versa. To ensure that their work wouldn't be to neat and would ensure an authentic old feel to the buildings. (Same with the jenever story: 2 jenevers before work)

Hi guys, great video! I saw a comment earlier mentioning that the park is supposed to be 'Grimm.' not Disney. It seemed that you interpreted this as 'gloomy,' but Grimm (capitalized) is actually referring to the German Grimm brothers: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brothers_Grimm

ah, yeah - grimm is dark though, especially compared to disney :)

Its not getting better than the efteling but the other ones are worth checking out certainly when you have kids. Next to this the walibi fright night during Halloween is kind of cool but that's mostly because horror figures will stalk you and you have haunted houses 😂👻.

I was in the Efteling on a rainy day and we went to ride the python and a bunch of schoolkids also did and after every ride they went AGAIN AGAIN AGAIN so the operator wouldn't let us out 😂 2nd time was fun, 3rd time okay but I was sooooooo freaking done after the 6th!! time. It started to rain so bad lol and the operator was like byeee and he just waved at us with a big smile when he sent us out there again 😂 it was kinda traumatic 😅

There's a madame Tussauds in Amsterdam, very touristy place though. As for aquariums. We got a dolphin/orca park called 'Dolfinarium' in Harderwijk. And some of the zoos also have more fish-oriented aquariums, some you can walk under or be surrounded by it. (The zoo in Emmen for instance, they also have seals and polar bears). There's also a rescue/recovery park for seals in Pieterburen that has a visitors center and tours I think.

Never visit Efteling after winter holidays. There's too much in maintenance and the weather is never nice. The flora is not blooming and the winter edition decoration is gone. Luckily for you, it was 2023 and not this year because the whole of Ruigrijk is in maintenance, and much more.
They, they the Efteling management, have the audacity to ask full price income for what can only be described as a build yard momentarily.
If you go back, wait till 2025 and pick a specific themed period like summer holidays or winter holidays.
