Hameln: The story of the rat catcher goes back to the 16th century (illustrations in Hamelin date back to 1592), so it were not the Brother's Grimm connecting the story of the lost children with the pied piper as a rat-catcher. The tale names the year 1284 for the events, which would be a bit late for the Children's Crusade of 1212 (starting from Cologne). There are however multiple hints for young settlers from the region of Hameln founding settlements in the regions of Prignitz and Uckermark in the state of Brandenburg from that time. So they migrated not to Eastern Europe, but only to the eastern border province of the German Kingdom (whose eastern border during the 13th century was nearly the same as nowadays).

Was stationed near Kassel in 68 and 69, ( then to Eschwege for 20 months). There is a great but small museum in Kassel, and ,like the map shows, lots of road trips in every direction to see their influences. We'll worth skipping Munich and lots of the south, for a change!!!

Thanks for the guide, as I'm tossing up that route from Frankfurt to Berlin. Interesting the real source for the Grimm tales. There seem to be a disproportionate amount of evil stepmothers in those tales so perhaps the women were saying something about society at the time.

@Peleski Thanks for taking the time to watch the guide. We enjoyed finding out the stories. Your theory could have some truth in it. That's the beauty of literature, it's open to your interpretation. We are happy and grateful for your comments. The trail is worth doing to find out for yourself. Have fun choosing.

When I did the route with my girlfriend we came to Rapunzel's castle...and it was under construction and closed. 😞

Argh how frustrating for you! Was it off-season ) winter? I hope the rest of your trip went well.

@@BreakawayBravehearts First two weeks of June with absolute beautiful early summer weather. It was just under heavy re-construction. Trip was nice other than that.
It was especially bad, because this castle is in the middle of nowhere, hard to find and it took us a while to find it, but the landscape and being all alone for many kilometers was a rare thing to experience in crowded Germany.
