@the baron hi u se joike is a kinda song that dosent mean stuf like words but u can dedicate joiks for stuf so its kinda singing u can sing about ur dog whit a joik
@the baron ~ in very old teachings about the joik, the song is non-different from the person, place, event, or obejct that is being sung to or about. So, if you sing about someone who has died, you are literally calling their essence into presence. If you sing about a river, you are singing the essence of the river and the sound of the song is considered the subtance and force of the river. (For those who are science fiction and fantasy readers, Ursula K LeGuin used this concept for "A Wizard of EarthSea" about how everything has a unique signature n sound and knowing the name or sound of a thing gives you power over it). The intimate connection of the Sami with the natural world is expressed in joiking as are the sacred relationships between people. Having this band win and win big is a BIG deal in Norway for Sami people, who are the Indegenous people throughout Northern Europe and parts of Eurasia. Their language and joiking were outlawed for MANY generations and so were their spiritual traditions, traditional crafts, and artwork. I can only imagine how much pride Sami people have to feel at these younger musicians really claiming their dignity and sovereignty. Some of my ancestry is Sami and *I* am bursting with pride from across the pond in America.
I'm so happy of your reaction because that is exactly how I felt watching Keiino's performance the first time. There's so much joy I couldn't explain watching the three unique vocals perfectly harmonized. Until now, I'm still addicted to it.
An electropop song With sami Language and sami joik is what make this song special and it brings something New in ESC. “Spirit in the Sky” is a story about brave men and women that have fought, and are fighting, for the right to be RESPECTED and LOVED for the person you are. It hasn’t always been easy to be the «different one» in a society/community/group (something Fred, Tom and Alexandra can relate to). According to pre-Christian Sami religion, the people had helping spirits. These could be in the shape of an animal, called Sáivu-loddi or Sáivu-sarvvát. So they wrote a story set in Sápmi many years ago, where a person is calling upon hers/his helping spirit for extra strength in a difficult situation. With the joik the singer try to convey the feelings that the Sami have gone through, having been discriminated against for hundreds of years. The song also contains a Sami stanza: “Čajet dan čuovgga”. It is translated into “Show me the light”.
Fred Buljo... comes from Sami musical "royalty" of sorts, for lack of a better word. His father is the Sami musician and artist Georg Buljo who was a pioneer in merging traditional Sami music and joiking with modern techno. Georg also recorded and toured with Mari Boine who is the godmother of Sami music.
Love your reaction - it was similar to mine when I first heard this song. It feels kinda special - a bit like when ABBA hit the Eurovision stage in the 70’s. It’s a brilliant song and they all look beautiful !
Hi, AJ! Thank you for your video and reaction! I have already listened to this modern pop song with an ethnic soul for more than 10 times and I can't stop! Love this song so much. Norway, you are incredible this year! 💖12 points from LATVIA!
Your face when listening to this!❤️❤️❤️Had to watch you several times!🥰I’m Norwegian and for the first time in 10 years I love our entry!! Thank you for this!
Also remember Norway wins every 10th year so this year is about time! It's been ten years since Alexander Ryback won... so it might goes well for Norway 🇳🇴!! Cheers from Sweden 🙌🏽🇸🇪😉
This will be in the final and hopefully get a great result..Really good songs this year...Lithuania,Sweden,Switzerland, Norway and Denmark get my attention.Greetings from Ireland.
Sami, or he joiker, a spesial way of singing familiar to other indigienous. Their culture and language was tried to been eradictated by the Norwegian Society from mid 1800 century til after 2. World war. Joik was forbidden in schools.

@@louisesn8319 ja, den med Norge i. Og det er ikke første gang det feires 17.mai borte! Did they win on 1999? If so we may be getting a trend here xD
Yes they did. 🙌🏽🇳🇴🤣
@@iamdaverodriguez 1989, 79? I know they didn't win on '69 (If my memory doesn't fail me)
Norway won once in the 80's, once in the 90's, once in the 2000's. This is the last chance to win it in the 2010's and keep the streak going.
Not every 10 years, but each decade - 1985,1995, 2009.
Fingers crossed for this year, last chance for a win this decade.
