That's because the German translation/interpretation of his movies is exceptionally good. I don't speak Italian but I've seen most of his movies that were filmed in English in the original version as well as the dubbed German version. The German versions are practically completely different movies. I don't like to watch dubbed movies and usually before watching a movie in a dubbed version I rather don't watch it at all. But the German versions of his movies are brilliant. So much better and funnier than at least the English originals. Whenever I watch one of his movies one quote from a completely different movie genre comes to my mind: "You've not experienced Shakespeare until you have read him in the original Klingon". Makes perfect sense now: you've not experienced a Bud Spencer movie until you've seen it in the original German version. 😂

Sandra Bullock and Mark Strong were clearly the best speakers, but that's not surprising since both have a parent from Germany (Edit: Strong's father is of course from Austria and not Germany). You can still hear their dialect relatively clearly, but in one or two sentences they almost sound like native speakers.
Considering that he only learned it through singing and acting, Christopher Lee's German was pretty good.

    • @Danisachan
      @Danisachan 11 месяцев назад +42

Ooooooh, there is actually a pretty strong theory that Christopher Lee was that good in German, because he was not only an activice soldier but - most specifiically - a German translator, for Britain in WW2. How true that is I don't know. He seems always pretty reluctant to speak in German though. And interestingly (unrelated) enough, he knew exactly that men don't scream when getting stabbed in the back (like in his Saruman role where he argued with Peter Jackson about that scene). That man has clearly seen some things in his life. That much can be said.

Even though Mark said his German was rusty, to me he just sounded totally German.

About "deutsche Familie": she said that she met many, many people (in Germany) who are now her German family.

Sandra Bullock and Mark Strong could pass as native speakers, but given that both have parents who are native speakers, that's not too surprising, but it's very cool to see that both have kept up their proficiency with the language well enough even well into adulthood in English-speaking countries.
I had seen versions of this video before, but not this specific one.
Also Christopher Lee, being put on the spot at the red carpet there, probably also didn't want to mention that he learned some German during the War, but I also highly recommend the German dub of The Last Unicorn, where Lee also voiced King Haggard like he did in the English original. His voice always had so much gravitas.

Almost the same with Leonardo Dicaprio - his mother is german, too. If I remeber it right, his father is an american, but his roots are german and italien. That's probably why Leo is so cute! Christopher Lee was moderate about his German speaking skills - and he spoke a lot of languages. He was with the SAS in special operations in WWII in Germany. Though he never studied German in school or at university, he probably needed to speak German back then to accomplish his missions. In the bonus material of Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers he told Peter Jackson what sound a person makes that is stabbed in the back ...
I never knew Mark Strong grew up in Germany. His German amazed me. He's speaking fluently and his accent is even better than Sandra Bullock's.

Four, however, already due to his origins. His grandfather was a German of Russian descent, his grandmother had German and Senegalese roots (which was a French colony at the time).
He was born in England, but at that time his father was a German diplomat.
Only when his father refused to produce an Aryan certificate in 1935 (which would have revealed that his mother was not only half Senegalese, but also half Jewish) was he dismissed from the civil service and emigrated with his family to England.

His grandmother died in 2008 and that’s the last time he visited the village she lived him. I guess speaking German only when visiting his grandmother, and the fact that his mother didn’t bother to raise him bilingually are the reasons why Leonardo’s German isn’t as good as for example Sandra’s. I was raised in a big Multicultural area of Sydney. It was my job in grade school to teach new Australian’s English so I speak a little of a lot of language’s. I didn’t realise I still knew much until I went to an Italian page and I realised about halfway through a post I was reading Italian and turning it to English. I taught my first daughter to count in 4 languages at two years old and to speak many words in those languages. She was very bright and started school at 4. I got a letter asking me to come in as my daughter was stupid and couldn’t speak properly. I love those kinds of notes. I arrived and my daughter was alone with her teacher as it was lunchtime. She told her to count to 10 and she did perfectly in German. Then I told her in Italian to do it again in Italian, she did. Then I looked at her teacher and told her to ask in English or French because she had already done it perfectly in German and Italian. Teacher was really sorry.
Now her daughter who is about to complete her Masters degree as a research Scientist and has taught 3rd year Biology and Chemistry while she was doing it. Besides her Bachelor’s and Honours Degree her reseach will not be funded by Australia so she must work overseas. She also got separate degree’s in Biology and German and Germany have just made an offer for her. She has already been published last year but we have to let her go.
My two youngest grandchildren who just turned 16 and 17 are both fluent in three languages. They use them when they don’t want their parents to understand. They speak English, French and their favourite because most of the world don’t speak it is Canadian Inuit or what we called Eskimo. They went to school on the Polar Cap. There wasn’t an English school. They make me laugh.
I think my grandchildren are more entertaining than that video.😂

I was born in Italy and my ex Wife of 23 yrs. Was born in Germany. I allways loved Foreign languages our tree children had good opportunity to learn Italian and German but in the early seventies for some reason it was frownd opon to speak another language. So my Ex Wife and I thought we would be wasting our time. My partner speaks 4 languages we can go anywhere in the world and not have a language problem.

Sandra and Mark for sure. To us they sound like native speakers who may have lived abroad for a few years, so the vocal color is a few percent off here and there, but the order of words in sentences is correct, the melody of their speech is spot on.

Sandra Bullock speaks the best German, almost without an accent. If she does, she has a Franconian accent, which is no wonder, because she lived in Nuremberg for 12 years.

Sandra Bullocks German is very good. Christopher Lee was really okay. Donna Summer has a good vocabulary, but has problems with the grammar. Bud Specer had enough German to get by. The Pope has studied for some time in Germany, his pronunciation is horrible. Chris Pratt was okay too. Djokovic didn’t have a good teacher it seems, at least not for pronunciation. Pep Guardiola should definitely had taken a language course before going to Bavara. Mark Strong was really good. But his mother is Austrian, so I guess he was brought up bilingual. Leo seems to understand more than he can speak.
Mark Strong and Sandra Bullock were the best

Pep is the most extraordinary. He was just Bayern's manager for about 3 years and there was clear progress, from one press conference to the next. In the end you could tell he knew all 4 cases (the ones where the english speakers only have one 😁) and even took over the german pronounciation and melody quite well. You could still tell he is originally a spanish dude, but still that was super impressive and unlike anything, I've ever seen before.
Mark Strong also super impressive, almost native. Apparently he has an Austrian mother, and tried to study law in munich... so that is not a surprise.

Wanted to write the same. Guardiolas german developed very soon after he took the Bayern job. he's very talented to learn languages in a short time. Do you remember how another Bayern coach tried to speak German? "Was erlauben Strunz? Hat gespielt wie Flasche leer!". Legendary speech also in german by Giovanni Trapattoni 🤣

    • @MatthiasSchlenger
      @MatthiasSchlenger 4 месяца назад

@@janka1981 Of course it's easy to compare Trapattoni (55 when becoming coach in Munich in 1994) and Guardiola (42 when coming to Munich in 2013). Guardiola kept speaking English in interviews with German journalists even after 2-3 years in Germany - so I wonder what anyone who sees an improvement/development in his skills relates to. Right now, Xabi Alonso as head coach of Leverkusen seems to do very much better!

sandra bullock: almost perfect (one slight grammatical mistake)
christopher lee: very good with some minor accent
donna summer: quite good (sounds almost like a dutchie speaking german)
bud spencer: easily intelligible, but very thick accent
pope/pep guardiola: you have to listen very closely, but generally intelligible
john kerry/chris pratt/leonardo dicaprio: easily intelligible with an accent
novak djokovic: easily intelligible in the beginning, but got a little harder towards the end
mark strong: almost perfect (could easily be mistaken for a 'slight accent from a german dialect')
it's probably generally easier to understand someone with a 'non-german germanic accent' than e.g. an italian/spanish/slavic accent - esp. when you're able to speak english yourself.

I almost agree, but like to add some points:
I have the impression that the Pope probably does not speak German at all. I think he was given a sheet of paper with some German words and was told how pronounce them. So he is merely imitating German.
John Kerry probably used up all his German in those 10 seconds. It was completely out of context and perhaps just the usual stuff like "Dankeschön, bitteschön, Wiedersehen, noch ein Bier, kommen Sie her."* 😉
Sandra Bullock's speech was much longer and contained - as far as I remember - a number of jokes.
I wish the Mark Strong portion was a little bit longer to compare it to Sandra Bullock's speech, but I was really impressed.
