@@taikang Me too. Political comedians like Schramm and Pispers are dearly missed. I can imagine how frustrating it must be to talk about the same topics over and over again for decades and nothing changes. As someone who is specialized in political science and media science, I think that the means of propaganda today are stronger and more subtle than ever before, to the extent that we don't see it. We even don't believe that it still exists in our western media, governments, or institutions. Hence, it has become nearly impossible for society to free itself from propaganda.

I know Volker personally. I run a video production company and have edited some of his videos for DVD releases. He is a very warm and smart person. I had the great honor to have dinner with him a few times and recorded his last performance in December 2016. He unfortunately leaves a big vacuum in the German cabaret scene. Especially now in these exciting times we would need people like him to bring enlightenment. He decided to leave the stage at the peak of his career, probably saddened by the fact that his efforts did not really improve people's insight.

He improved people's insights immensely - it just didn't make a fucking difference, because people are lazy and inert when they are mostly comfortable. I guess that was what frustrated him so much. I saw him performing in Hameln, and he seemed pretty burned-out and sour and disillusioned at that point, so I wasn't really surprised when I heard he retired. The thing is, _cabaret_ doesn't quite convey what this is. Maybe we should be going with the German term ("politisches Kabarett") and call it _political cabaret_ . In Germany - and Austria and Switzerland for that matter - this is a category of its own. It's not just meant to entertain people, like comedy, it's meant to get uncomfortable truths through to the audience _by means_ of being entertaining, rather than instructive.

However, yes he is a brilliant, intelligent cabaretist (there's a distinction between political cabaret and just joking comedy that is kind of important for Germans) who simply told the truth. The trick there is to let pretty bad facts clash in such a way that for the audience, the only way out of the emotional dilemma you put them in, is laughter.

Right. The presentation of complex political topics and putting focus on the important bits is one of the functions a cabaretist has. It's a quite important role for society and democracy. I was looking out for his spin on certain things in the past but on his website he made it clear that we won't come back. Sad but I think it's the right decision for his mental health. The newer generations have different sources anyways. Lets just hope that sanity doesn't go down the drain.

He retired because conservative right-wing and conspiracy ideologists have used most of his statements in a for them against democracy and against the then-ruling government and Volker Pispers became more and more the mouthpiece of a community that he vehemently opposed. He is an intelligent man who tried to hold up the mirror to the people through his art in which he made fun of politics because in truth the people are to blame for the choice of politicians. Not everything they do wrong, but if people would not choose such a money-hungry, inhuman machinery, there would be no reason for cabaret.

My favorit is especially the show where he shows his mathematical skill when calculating, based on offical german governmental statistics, the best solution for the struggling german social pension system: pensionists and society would be better off (not only financial but also healthcare) when sending all pensionists on cruise ships over the oceans.

This kind of comedy is really part of the genre of political cabaret (satire) that is very widespread in Germany. I do recommend reacting to the rest of this series by Pispers.
Other political satirists worth watching are the TV show "Die Anstalt" (which means the Institution, but old-style mental institution). They take a broader view like here of national or international topics.
"Die Heute Show" with Oliver Welke is another TV show that sends up current affairs items, whether politics or not.

As other commentators have already written below: in Germany (and the German-speaking area) we distinguish between different forms of humor. 1) the simple (often silly) comedy, 2) the cabaret, where serious political and economic issues are examined in more detail, and 3) the political satire, which puts its finger deep into the wound... and often even causes the wound, then stick the finger in and flip!
The boundaries between 2) and 3) are fluid - there are some videos on RUclips in the "(Political) Cabaret" section, e.g. the "Münchner Lach- und Schießgesellschaft"("Munich Laughing and Shooting Society", 1956-), "Scheibenwischer" ("window wipers", 1980-2008), "Neues aus der Anstalt" ("News from the institution", 2007-2013), and the follow-up "Die Anstalt" ("The institution", 2014-).
To Volker Pispers: with his solo programs he clearly belongs in 3), because he doesn't work through a small incident, but puts forward a thesis that he then confirms in a large arc - with various side swipes.
The reaction of the listener/spectator: first you start laughing, then your brain understands what he said and the laughter gets stuck in your throat!

    From Cabaret Wikipedia:
German Kabarett developed from 1901, with the creation of the Überbrettl (Superstage) venue, and by the Weimar era in the mid-1920s, the Kabarett performances were characterized by political satire and gallows humor.[14] It shared the characteristic atmosphere of intimacy with the French cabaret from which it was imported, but the gallows humor was a distinct German aspect.[14]

The sad thing about Pispers is, that he quit performing because he felt its a wasted time. People laugh a bit and applaude, but they never demand changes, like in the elections. That frustrated him, so he gave it up years ago.
The currently most popular comedian in Germany is probably Torsten Sträter. He is not so focused on politics, but he is a master of the German language. He started with poetry slams and so on. Another comedian with a similar talent is Olaf Schubert, a guy from Saxony. But both of these will require a really excellent translation to transport their humor properly. And even then it may be difficult in Schubert's case, because he like to invent words sometimes. But have a look and see what you can find from them, and what you think.

I like Sträter and Schubert, too, but I fear their humour unfortunately won't work without much knowledge of language and culture. Even Pispers talks in a way the subtitles just can't deliver.
But sure, he can look them up, I am kind of curious, too, what he thinks of them. I just hope he will be aware of the language barrier possibly making it unfunny instead of just thinking of these comedians as being not funny.😅

Pispers was (he is alive, but he is more or less retired) a prime example of german political comedy (we even have a different term for it, Kabarett, cabaret. I think most of it is more or less left). AFAIK, in Britain things like this are just mixed in with other stuff, comedians do superficial stuff and political mixed together. Whether Jimmy Carr does alternating knob jokes and societal observations or Romesh Ranganathan alternates between observations on racism and jokes about how his family is weird, it's more of a mix. Sure, there are people who lean more toward the serious stuff, like Frankie Boyle. But even in shows that are clearly leaning more towards the political and societal stuff, like Have I Got News For You or Mock The Week, stuff is mixed.
If you want more of the German political comedy, remember that Pispers more or less retired in the early 10's. "Die Anstalt" is a regular ensemble show that is today's prime example of political comedy (and kinda a who is who in political comedy, both the old version ("Neues aus der Anstalt") and the newer ("Die Anstalt")). Urban Priol is kinda retired like Pispers, Hagen Rether will probably not come across as well in translation because he peacefully and calmly talks about the most terrible things and that dichotomy is both striking and hard to translate. Piet Klocke is also hard to translate.

Many here have commented that this is not comedy, but cabaret or "German Cabaret". This was an attempt to translate the German term "Kabarett" into English. I find that problematic, because most non-Germans associate the English term cabaret with a revue, as in the film of the same name starring Liza Minelli. Although the name Kabarett was taken from the French cabaret, the German Kabarett developed as an independent art form very early on in Germany. Kabarett is closely related to comedy, but unlike comedy, it‘s always political and requires a certain level of knowledge and intelligence from the viewer.
