My Father drove the two of us through Death Valley in the 60's in the middle of the day (Summer, 120F) in a car with no AC. I was about 9 and kept telling him I was too hot, but he was a military vet and said to sit upright, chest out. I tried that for a few moments then started complaining again. He said, "This isn't too hot. When I was stationed in Hong Kong in WW2 it was hot & humid. This is a dry heat. You'll be fine." But I could feel I was getting ready to pass out, then I saw green liquid on the passenger floor. My father said, "Look at the anti-freeze." So I fell forward on to it and used my hands to elevate my head out of the liquid, which felt cool and passed out. My father yelled at me to get up but he never pulled over or anything. Near dusk I came to and got back up in my seat. My father said, "Boy I sure am glad you're ok. Your Mother would have really gotten after me if anything happened to you." On the radio the local news was about a married couple and their daughter whose car broke down that day in Death Valley and all 3 were found dead. So I guess I dodged a bullet that day thanks to the anti-freeze but wow, did I ever have a bad headache and green hair. Nothing like some severe child abuse to remind you you're not in control at that age.
Sure, these visitors are fine as long as they are only briefly exposed to triple digit temps and then can get back into their highly air-conditioned vehicles or go inside the air-conditioned ranger station. However, if any one of those vehicles breaks down more than a 20-minute walk from rescue, those humans would be in serious trouble if no one came to their rescue. Clearly with all that exposed skin, these visitors do not know how to dress for intense desert heat or intense sunlight and have little appreciation for how quickly a human can become dehydrated and dangerously over-heated in triple digit temperatures. I visit Death Valey in the winter and early spring when temperatures are reasonable. I would never visit during the summer when my life would depend upon my vehicle and its air-conditioning not malfunctioning.

I'm wondering about that too. Did the park ranger realize if your car breaks down the air conditioner won't be working. Maybe if you have a flat, but if the motor isn't running the same with the AC, except if it's electric. In that case, the heat will probably play havoc with the batteries.

There are quite a few medical conditions that extreme heat can make worse! I know, I have high blood pressure and am on lots of medication for it. Also skin conditions such as Rosacea and Eczema can be made worse by the heat! In this summer, The Summer of 2024, several people have literally died from being out in the 110+ temperatures walking! Healthy, young people in great athletic shape!
I don't think the issue is record temperatures altogether, it's the fact that record temperatures keep happening at a more frequent pace. In the summers you'd get 2-3 heat waves maybe lasting a week at most and one really hot summer every 5-6 years. Now it's an annual thing.
Try taking the temp in the dirt without any concrete around im sure will will be normal and not be a record stop trying to find new ways to set a record by bs
