Ah the dreaded beastie pests! I now think I have what is called a super spider mite! Those suckers love air flow! Yup I said LOVE AIR FLOW! I recently found a leaf on my Roy Tokanuga that literally sets right in front of an box fan!!! Literally inches away!!! Its the red buggers too! But the air flow don't bother them! At all! Pest buggers are about enough to make a preacher cuss! 🤣🤣🤣 great video! I enjoyed it!

I just use the moth strips that you hang in your wardrobe. I even hang them in my greenhouse. No more moth problem. But those spider mites always find a way back into my greenhouse.

Lots of great info there Nina!! I've been lucky growing indoors, not as many issues. The one pest I did get, from a nursery that sent a plant, was miniature snails!! 😱 Lordy what a pain! But a mild copper treatment and diatomaceous earth took care of that quickly! Needless to say, I'll not be ordering from that place again. They even denied it when I contacted them!! Moving on... HI Robert 🤗💐 I had snails come in the mail, with the orchid that featured recently... they loved the warmth and darkness of the shipping conditions and yes... the seller did not even bother to reply to my email, with pics... charming!! NOT! And I am sorry that you had that issues. So, hydrogen peroxide did not help at all, in your case... I am glad that the copper and diatomaceous earth did the trick, because, like caterpillars, they will really do a number on orchids! Day was 👍🏼and I hope, the same for you! There are a couple of growers on RUclips with different growing conditions who grow strictly indoors that have regular attacks of scale, thrips, aphids etc. and it always amazed me how they could get them so severely because it was thought that outdoor growers were more likely to be effected by the nasties, but how wrong that can be. Appreciate your candid video and bringing this to our attention.
Hi there, Renate 😍💐 these creatures are such a pain for anyone, but, their tenacity to get into a home, despite having the great outdoors .... nope, they find a way to come in! I understand opening windows etc, but that would not normally happen in winter if the temps are below 0. There is no room for complacency in this hobby, no matter indoors or outdoors. Sometimes I think that the orchids that can grow outdoors are a little more resilient than exclusively indoors. At least, for me, I find that during the outdoor season, I don't see as much happening as I do during the months that I have to juggle them inside. It is like our immune system ... the more we do not expose ourselves to certain conditions, the weaker the immune system becomes 🤷🏼♀️either way... we just have to be armed and ready to intervene as soon as something is on a leaf or bloom that was not there yesterday 👍🏼thank YOU for your kind comment and for your thoughts on the indoor growing and pest phenomenon. 🥰have yourself a beautiful evening, Renate! 😍🌸
I find my pets bring them in, particularly the cats as one really like to lounge on my shelves and smell the blooms. I also think sometimes I bring them into the house especially after doing yard work.

I try to brush myself off as best as possible after I am done pruning... but, still, short of working in a bio hazard suit that stays outside before stepping in to the house, nothing is going to stop these cretins from hitching a ride. I really do not know what purpose scale serves... really! I shall have to google that 🤪

"know what is legal in your country" almost everything. I think there are only three banned insecticides. (side note: pesticides include insecticides, fungicides, miticides, herbicides, bactericides, etc. because "pest" does, as you said, cover any organism other than the one you intend to culture) Now, should we, in the US, use _all_ of them? Perhaps not all, but rotating your 'cides will limit target organism resistance, so I alternate use of three. You've really got the whole spectrum of woes there. My biggest insect problem is scale and that mostly happens in the spring, just as the weather begins to warm and they become active and the plants are often somewhat stressed from colder than they would like nights. Thrips happen sometimes, mealies not too much because they prefer Hibiscus (same for aphids). But the hot, humid, wet summers in Florida invite all sorts of fungal and bacterial problems that growers in other climates may not have to worry about as much. Some people will spray their plants religiously monthly with antifungals, I don't because they can be particularly bad for the environment. Mostly I try not to treat unless I see something, I try to be kind to the environment. Even if that means a pot full of sugar ants attacking me when I repot a plant. (also, brrrrrrrrrrrr, boy did it turn cold. it was only 19 today for the high and it will be 8.5 overnight 🥶 🥶 🥶 🥶 🥶)

I can almost do it in my sleep 😂 I am so mad at the aphids on my Lutin Blan 😡I brush the buds now every day with the paintbrush, but sans alcohol seeing as I nuked the little spike at the bottom, I had to test how much the buds could take to remove the aphids, but, it was too much even though I only applied what was on the paintbrush. Like the ants in my Garren Weaver during the summer? 😅😅 now THAT is crazy cold, for FL!! That is crazy!!! Wow! Imagine the tourists coming to spend some time getting away from the cold and then encounter that! I would be really annoyed if that were me 😬I had a little lower today, so the orchids stayed inside, and the lights will go at midnight. The sun could not make up it's mind and I wasn't about to panic with who would be too cool when the sun is behind the cloud and who would be ok. 8.5 nights here, yep... got dem 😞 and the coming days are going to get nasty again. @@NinjaOrchids the tourists still seem to think this weather is great. I'm out walking the pups this morning, it is all of 9 C and these people are out walking in shorts and a tee shirt. I'm in long pants, a sweatshirt and a winter jacket and still I'm freezing. Excellent news today, another bud is just starting on the Huntleya. I still can't really tell if the first one pollinated, the ovary looks more swollen I think, but other than the lip curling to the column, that bloom still looks great. Hopefully by the time the next bloom pops, I'll know if the pollination worked, so maybe I won't have to sacrifice another bloom. Although it might be interesting to try and take that pollen and apply it to a Zygo if I have one in bloom at the same time.
oh yes... the distinction between tourists and nativos! I remember my first winter here and was laughing at people in fur coats while I was sitting in bermuda shorts and a light sweater with a sundowner after golf 😅 ... that was the first and last time I laughed at people dressed for antarctica. 🦒👌💖🙌 Another very interesting topic and very thorough information 🙏 In their adult phase mealy bugs and scale are different and easy to distinguish but thanks for clarifying the similarity between mealy bugs and scale in their early stages which was confusing me. It really pays off to look out for them and act fast. Because they are out there just waiting for an opportunity. It is amazing how we can so easily be defeated by such small creatures. I have always my bottle of garlic alcohol close by. They specially attack my epiphytic cactus, I have to keep an eye on them all the time to keep them in control. Meally bugs and scale are all called cochonilha (cochonille) here and the variety you can encounter is amazing. When I started as a gardener I saw mealy bugs the size of pealed hazelnuts, absolutely gross. I saw them in wild bushes and also in my friend's orange trees which I treated for her with a very effective product called summer oil which did not seem very harmful to nature but which we do not have access to anymore, unless you have a farmer's card. Snails and catterpillars are my nemesis these days though, in what concerns orchids outdoors😞😵, they are terrible... Thanks for all the information and have a lovely day 💖😍🤗

At first, I did not understand how mealy bug pesticides would have the same effect on scale, just because it is a cochinilla.... soft shell, hard shell... never made sense to me! Now, I do not care! I am so generous with my garlic alcohol... I really do not care who is who 😂the caterpillars... gee, I thought I would have a wonderful show on my antennatum, and every day ... something was not looking right, and then I saw the droppings. Those critters! 😖The worst one is the one you have at the moment! I saw a few baby scales on two of my paphiopedilum today 😖 so this will be the time to try the garlic infused alcohol! Not an easy subject to document, because I am so armed with my garlic alcohol as I go around, I do not wait to get the camera, set up the shot... all the while knowing those bugs have more time on my orchid. 🤯 normally I immediately apply the kill spray and if need be, the paintbrush to follow, so, your feedback is very much appreciated! If you know anyone that would benefit from this video as well, feel free to share 👍🏼 no need to spray the leaves with water. Let the alcohol evaporate, and leave it as is, because the essential oils from the garlic is what acts as the long term repellent. (7-10 days if treating a pest and as a preventative measure as you have time) it is just awesome stuff! I lost so many phals to scale and I thought it was me that caused stem rot. But... when I took the orchid apart, there was scale. Now, I have clean phals, and I have not used the alcohol for 8 months 👍🏼 Come warmer temperatures, I will do a preventative application just to keep up their 'guard' 😃 thank you very much for watching 🙌🏼🌸

I apologize for the late reply, Ruth! Spray the garlic water on the leaves as a foliar spray and leave to evaporate. No need to rinse off 👍🏼 If you may find that you have some mold in the pot, then spray the surface with hydrogen peroxide generously, let fizz and then flush the put by pouring water into it, not the submerged flush of the pot. 👍🏼
Loved this video and always love organic solutions as pesticides and fungicides as opposed to the commercial ones. I mixed up a batch today of the pesticide after watching the “recipe” video. My cloves were huge so I used only three instead 5. The solution is somewhat cloudy so I am wondering if I still used too much garlic-or does it matter? I admit I’m a little nervous using on my orchids. This recipe video is from awhile back. Are you still using the same ratio of garlic to alcohol.? As for the fungicide: is this used as a spray on the leaves or ford drenching the media? Sorry for all the questions. Thanks in advance as I am excited to try your remedy!
HI Barbara!! 🥰💐it is fine if the solution is cloudy... depends from garlic to garlic. The fungicide solution (water based) with the finely ground garlic will be more cloudy, because the particles are smaller. But the alcohol solution, with the chopped garlic, should not be as cloudy. But, it doesn't matter if it is. Too much garlic is not a problem. It is fine to go a little higher in garlic just to be safe, too little and the repellent effect will not be as effective, so... you're fine! I am still using the same concentration and have never looked back! The repelling effect of the essential oils in the garlic is incredible. It has been a true game changer for me. I am not nervous about anything getting out of control, and I don't have to be soooo paranoid about the pest returning over and over again! I do apply sporadically, as a prevention, especially on orchids I know that are more prone to pests, but that is me, just being paranoid, especially this time of year, when it is warmer and nicer for pests indoors than outdoors. The fungicide I apply on everything that looks suspicious. Leaves and the media. Sometimes I have flushed with the garlic water when I have an orchid that has nasty spots that seem to be spreading. The spots stop spreading, but of course, the spots stay behind, the fungus having damaged the cells of the leaves. And... there is no residual garlic odor on the orchid after the alcohol has evaporated. So... you can still smell fragrance orchids without them smelling like garlic. The odor is only there for a small duration and then disappears. No orchids that are misted will have their leaves smell of garlic for the foreseeable future. I have been using this since the recipe video aired 👍🏼👍🏼 never bought another pesticide off the shelves, and what a relief! I can tell you 🙏🏼thank you so much for revisiting this subject, Barbara!! Garlic ... I love it! I had to stop eating it while I was still employed just to be fair to my guests. But since lockdown started, and being unemployed now, garlic is back.... and not just for the orchids 😅

Poi filtrano e usano il liquido per disinfettare le radici, il substrato e anche il muschio. Poi dicono che è utile anche come fertilizzante e quindi fanno questa operazione 2 volte al mese. Io ho voluto provarlo ma solo sulle phalaenopsis perchè li c'è il substrato organico, e sono stata soddisfatta. Sulle piante grasse uso l'alcool all'aglio e in più pezzetti di aglio infilati nella metà superiore degli stuzzicadenti e con la metà inferiore inserita nel terreno. In questo modo l'odore di aglio va sia nella parte aerea che nel terreno e mi sembra particolarmente efficace per la cocciniglia che spesso si annida anche nelle radici
La ricetta per la soluzione all'aglio è quella che uso io, ma non l'ho presa dai canali dell'Asia meridionale. Non guardo quei canali a causa delle informazioni fuorvianti. Ah the dreaded beastie pests! I now think I have what is called a super spider mite! Those suckers love air flow! Yup I said LOVE AIR FLOW! I recently found a leaf on my Roy Tokanuga that literally sets right in front of an box fan!!! Literally inches away!!! Its the red buggers too! But the air flow don't bother them! At all! Pest buggers are about enough to make a preacher cuss! 🤣🤣🤣 great video! I enjoyed it!

There is nothing small in the US, everything is bigger 😅 but, that is not meant to be as a joke because dang, I am glad that I have never encountered that pest, and I hope I never will! I just use the moth strips that you hang in your wardrobe. I even hang them in my greenhouse. No more moth problem. But those spider mites always find a way back into my greenhouse.

Lots of great info there Nina!! I've been lucky growing indoors, not as many issues. The one pest I did get, from a nursery that sent a plant, was miniature snails!! 😱 Lordy what a pain! But a mild copper treatment and diatomaceous earth took care of that quickly! Needless to say, I'll not be ordering from that place again. They even denied it when I contacted them!! Moving on...

HI Robert 🤗💐 I had snails come in the mail, with the orchid that featured recently... they loved the warmth and darkness of the shipping conditions and yes... the seller did not even bother to reply to my email, with pics... charming!! NOT! And I am sorry that you had that issues. So, hydrogen peroxide did not help at all, in your case... I am glad that the copper and diatomaceous earth did the trick, because, like caterpillars, they will really do a number on orchids! Day was 👍🏼and I hope, the same for you! There are a couple of growers on RUclips with different growing conditions who grow strictly indoors that have regular attacks of scale, thrips, aphids etc. and it always amazed me how they could get them so severely because it was thought that outdoor growers were more likely to be effected by the nasties, but how wrong that can be. Appreciate your candid video and bringing this to our attention.
Hi there, Renate 😍💐 these creatures are such a pain for anyone, but, their tenacity to get into a home, despite having the great outdoors .... nope, they find a way to come in! I understand opening windows etc, but that would not normally happen in winter if the temps are below 0. There is no room for complacency in this hobby, no matter indoors or outdoors. Sometimes I think that the orchids that can grow outdoors are a little more resilient than exclusively indoors. At least, for me, I find that during the outdoor season, I don't see as much happening as I do during the months that I have to juggle them inside. It is like our immune system ... the more we do not expose ourselves to certain conditions, the weaker the immune system becomes 🤷🏼♀️either way... we just have to be armed and ready to intervene as soon as something is on a leaf or bloom that was not there yesterday 👍🏼thank YOU for your kind comment and for your thoughts on the indoor growing and pest phenomenon. 🥰have yourself a beautiful evening, Renate! 😍🌸
I find my pets bring them in, particularly the cats as one really like to lounge on my shelves and smell the blooms. I also think sometimes I bring them into the house especially after doing yard work.
oh yes... yard work! I try to brush myself off as best as possible after I am done pruning... but, still, short of working in a bio hazard suit that stays outside before stepping in to the house, nothing is going to stop these cretins from hitching a ride. I really do not know what purpose scale serves... really! I shall have to google that 🤪

almost everything. I think there are only three banned insecticides. (side note: pesticides include insecticides, fungicides, miticides, herbicides, bactericides, etc. because "pest" does, as you said, cover any organism other than the one you intend to culture) Now, should we, in the US, use _all_ of them? Perhaps not all, but rotating your 'cides will limit target organism resistance, so I alternate use of three.
You've really got the whole spectrum of woes there. My biggest insect problem is scale and that mostly happens in the spring, just as the weather begins to warm and they become active and the plants are often somewhat stressed from colder than they would like nights. Thrips happen sometimes, mealies not too much because they prefer Hibiscus (same for aphids). But the hot, humid, wet summers in Florida invite all sorts of fungal and bacterial problems that growers in other climates may not have to worry about as much. Some people will spray their plants religiously monthly with antifungals, I don't because they can be particularly bad for the environment. Mostly I try not to treat unless I see something, I try to be kind to the environment. Even if that means a pot full of sugar ants attacking me when I repot a plant.
(also, brrrrrrrrrrrr, boy did it turn cold. it was only 19 today for the high and it will be 8.5 overnight 🥶 🥶 🥶 🥶 🥶)

I can almost do it in my sleep 😂 I am so mad at the aphids on my Lutin Blan 😡I brush the buds now every day with the paintbrush, but sans alcohol seeing as I nuked the little spike at the bottom, I had to test how much the buds could take to remove the aphids, but, it was too much even though I only applied what was on the paintbrush. Like the ants in my Garren Weaver during the summer? 😅😅 now THAT is crazy cold, for FL!! That is crazy!!! Wow! Imagine the tourists coming to spend some time getting away from the cold and then encounter that! I would be really annoyed if that were me 😬I had a little lower today, so the orchids stayed inside, and the lights will go at midnight. The sun could not make up it's mind and I wasn't about to panic with who would be too cool when the sun is behind the cloud and who would be ok. 8.5 nights here, yep... got dem 😞 and the coming days are going to get nasty again. @@NinjaOrchids the tourists still seem to think this weather is great. I'm out walking the pups this morning, it is all of 9 C and these people are out walking in shorts and a tee shirt. I'm in long pants, a sweatshirt and a winter jacket and still I'm freezing.
Excellent news today, another bud is just starting on the Huntleya. I still can't really tell if the first one pollinated, the ovary looks more swollen I think, but other than the lip curling to the column, that bloom still looks great. Hopefully by the time the next bloom pops, I'll know if the pollination worked, so maybe I won't have to sacrifice another bloom. Although it might be interesting to try and take that pollen and apply it to a Zygo if I have one in bloom at the same time.
oh yes... the distinction between tourists and nativos! I remember my first winter here and was laughing at people in fur coats while I was sitting in bermuda shorts and a light sweater with a sundowner after golf 😅 ... that was the first and last time I laughed at people dressed for antarctica. Next winter, I had acclimated and was doing the same 😂 you are going to have options with your Huntleya! that is awesome 👍🏼

🦒👌💖🙌 Another very interesting topic and very thorough information 🙏 In their adult phase mealy bugs and scale are different and easy to distinguish but thanks for clarifying the similarity between mealy bugs and scale in their early stages which was confusing me. It really pays off to look out for them and act fast. Because they are out there just waiting for an opportunity. It is amazing how we can so easily be defeated by such small creatures. I have always my bottle of garlic alcohol close by. They specially attack my epiphytic cactus, I have to keep an eye on them all the time to keep them in control. Meally bugs and scale are all called cochonilha (cochonille) here and the variety you can encounter is amazing. When I started as a gardener I saw mealy bugs the size of pealed hazelnuts, absolutely gross. I saw them in wild bushes and also in my friend's orange trees which I treated for her with a very effective product called summer oil which did not seem very harmful to nature but which we do not have access to anymore, unless you have a farmer's card. Snails and catterpillars are my nemesis these days though, in what concerns orchids outdoors😞😵, they are terrible...

That horrible bougainvillea in the corner on my east side, if I let that get out of hand, I get those large mealies on that. That is why I call it horrible, because of what it brings to the corner... personally, I love bougainvillea, just not that one 😂cochinillas here yes. At first, I did not understand how mealy bug pesticides would have the same effect on scale, just because it is a cochinilla.... soft shell, hard shell... never made sense to me! Now, I do not care! I am so generous with my garlic alcohol... I really do not care who is who 😂the caterpillars... gee, I thought I would have a wonderful show on my antennatum, and every day ... something was not looking right, and then I saw the droppings. Oh well, now I know.... this one gets sprayed once a month from now on 👍🏼Thank YOU so much for watching, amiga!! The sun could not make up it's mind today, so every one stayed inside. The essential oils of the garlic stay on the orchid long after the alcohol has evaporated and they act as a repellent. Not an easy subject to document, because I am so armed with my garlic alcohol as I go around, I do not wait to get the camera, set up the shot... all the while knowing those bugs have more time on my orchid. 🤯 normally I immediately apply the kill spray and if need be, the paintbrush to follow, so, your feedback is very much appreciated! If you know anyone that would benefit from this video as well, feel free to share 👍🏼 no need to spray the leaves with water. Let the alcohol evaporate, and leave it as is, because the essential oils from the garlic is what acts as the long term repellent. (7-10 days if treating a pest and as a preventative measure as you have time) it is just awesome stuff! I lost so many phals to scale and I thought it was me that caused stem rot. But... when I took the orchid apart, there was scale. Now, I have clean phals, and I have not used the alcohol for 8 months 👍🏼 Come warmer temperatures, I will do a preventative application just to keep up their 'guard' 😃 thank you very much for watching 🙌🏼🌸

By spray on the leaves or pour it into pot?
I apologize for the late reply, Ruth! Spray the garlic water on the leaves as a foliar spray and leave to evaporate. No need to rinse off 👍🏼 If you may find that you have some mold in the pot, then spray the surface with hydrogen peroxide generously, let fizz and then flush the put by pouring water into it, not the submerged flush of the pot. 👍🏼

Loved this video and always love organic solutions as pesticides and fungicides as opposed to the commercial ones. I mixed up a batch today of the pesticide after watching the “recipe” video. My cloves were huge so I used only three instead 5. The solution is somewhat cloudy so I am wondering if I still used too much garlic-or does it matter? I admit I’m a little nervous using on my orchids. This recipe video is from awhile back. Are you still using the same ratio of garlic to alcohol.? As for the fungicide: is this used as a spray on the leaves or ford drenching the media? Sorry for all the questions. Thanks in advance as I am excited to try your remedy!
HI Barbara!! 🥰💐it is fine if the solution is cloudy... depends from garlic to garlic. The fungicide solution (water based) with the finely ground garlic will be more cloudy, because the particles are smaller. But the alcohol solution, with the chopped garlic, should not be as cloudy. But, it doesn't matter if it is. Too much garlic is not a problem. It is fine to go a little higher in garlic just to be safe, too little and the repellent effect will not be as effective, so... you're fine! I am still using the same concentration and have never looked back! The repelling effect of the essential oils in the garlic is incredible. It has been a true game changer for me. I am not nervous about anything getting out of control, and I don't have to be soooo paranoid about the pest returning over and over again! I do apply sporadically, as a prevention, especially on orchids I know that are more prone to pests, but that is me, just being paranoid, especially this time of year, when it is warmer and nicer for pests indoors than outdoors. The fungicide I apply on everything that looks suspicious. Leaves and the media. Sometimes I have flushed with the garlic water when I have an orchid that has nasty spots that seem to be spreading. The spots stop spreading, but of course, the spots stay behind, the fungus having damaged the cells of the leaves. And... there is no residual garlic odor on the orchid after the alcohol has evaporated. So... you can still smell fragrance orchids without them smelling like garlic. The odor is only there for a small duration and then disappears. No orchids that are misted will have their leaves smell of garlic for the foreseeable future. I have been using this since the recipe video aired 👍🏼👍🏼 never bought another pesticide off the shelves, and what a relief! I can tell you 🙏🏼thank you so much for revisiting this subject, Barbara!! Garlic ... I love it! I had to stop eating it while I was still employed just to be fair to my guests. But since lockdown started, and being unemployed now, garlic is back.... and not just for the orchids 😅
@@NinjaOrchids io ho visto in alcuni video sud asiatici che usano 1 spicchio di aglio a pezzetti in 1/2 lt di acqua e lo lasciano 12 ore a temperatura ambiente oppure 24 ore in frigo a macerare. Poi filtrano e usano il liquido per disinfettare le radici, il substrato e anche il muschio. Poi dicono che è utile anche come fertilizzante e quindi fanno questa operazione 2 volte al mese. Io ho voluto provarlo ma solo sulle phalaenopsis perchè li c'è il substrato organico, e sono stata soddisfatta. Sulle piante grasse uso l'alcool all'aglio e in più pezzetti di aglio infilati nella metà superiore degli stuzzicadenti e con la metà inferiore inserita nel terreno. In questo modo l'odore di aglio va sia nella parte aerea che nel terreno e mi sembra particolarmente efficace per la cocciniglia che spesso si annida anche nelle radici
La ricetta per la soluzione all'aglio è quella che uso io, ma non l'ho presa dai canali dell'Asia meridionale. Non guardo quei canali a causa delle informazioni fuorvianti. La sève heureuse est le terme couramment utilisé pour désigner le miellat que vous voyez s'accumuler sur les nouvelles pousses qui se présentent sous la forme d'un liquide clair et collant. Il peut apparaître sur les épis, les bourgeons ainsi que sur les nouvelles pousses à mesure qu'elles commencent à s'étendre à partir des pousses plus anciennes. Cela ressemble à des gouttelettes d'eau, mais si vous prenez votre doigt et le retirez, vous remarquerez à quel point il est collant. Si vous le goûtez, c'est super sucré, comme un sirop.
