Another great video. My eyebrows raised when I saw how many pads you use. Then I realized car enthusiasts don't have to worry about ROI (return on investment). So 5-6 extra minutes cleaning two pads with an APC by hand is no big deal.
Request: Can we tap into your vast years of experience and do a BEST OF products? You choose your products based on the best bang-for-the buck and getting the highest ROI. However, if you were just an enthusiast, like many of your viewers, what's the Best of the Best? What's the best liquid wax? What's the best paint sealant? What the best glaze? I've been watching you for 3 1/2 years.. started when I bought a new black truck. At first I thought you talk way too much. After about 6 months I realized you really get into logical reasoning which helps my mindset grasp the mechanics of the process so much better and keeps me on track with how I proceed. Mike Phillips at a minimum recommends 6 for corrections. Here is his breakdown- 1 for the hood
1 for the roof and trunk lid
2 for driver's side

Scott, I am now getting into polishing and your advice in this old video I just found, verifies everything I was thinking with your real-world experience. 8 it is! And for polish, the 4 makes so much sense because the pads are not even being stressed as much in a polish versus cutting. GREAT TUTORIAL, thank you.
Hey there Scott! I'm new to the detailing world and your channel. Mang, I gotta give you praise as your videos are very informative and straight to the point. At first I did think it was excessive that you used soo many pads but after realizing that I wouldn't use just one microfiber towel to wipe my whole car down it made sense. Also want to thank you for your video on polishing for beginners. It gave me the push and motivation to overcome my fear of doing my own paint correction. Just recently ordered a polisher and looking forward to take my vehicle to the next level of shine! Thanks again for the awesome videos, keep up the great work! Much respect from SoCal.

Scott, it takes me approx 15-20 seconds to clean a pad in the pad washer. In order to remove my old pad and put a new pad on, it takes approx 30+ seconds. I'm always trying to get the best alignment for the center. So for me the pad washer is a time saver! Plus I like the idea of the pad being slightly damp with ONR to help the product work longer. Not to mention i'm not spending 20 minutes in the kitchen at the end of the day cleaning the stupid freaking pads.
I used 1 pad for that entire Chevy truck I sent you and I spent approx 5hrs doing a thorough decontamination wash and using Griot's Boss Sealant. I figure that's pretty good. :P
Trent Hallmark and the pad washer needs to be filled with water and cleaner plus one more large object you need to bring to the job plus the plastic grit guard can ruin the surface of the pad and diminish it's life..it cost 150 dollars and i can by 20 pads for that cost! If you want to condition your pad just use distilled water in a 32oz bottle because remember compounds are more water based these days..i can wash my pads when i get home within 5 minutes because i don't work them long and never dirty or saturated

Get some d-limonene and and APC and clean a pad in about 60 seconds. I use 6 to 10 pads and take 10 minutes to clean them at the end of the day.
Hi Scott I sometimes use the rupes 5 inch blue/green cutting pads and find that they are so thick and hard that they barely get saturated, when washing I just soak the pads over night and they are totally clean. I end up using 4 pads on a 4 door sedan however when it comes to microfiber pads I totally agree with using several pads. Great advice keep it up.
Man I finally found the answer to this question!!!! I polished my entire 37 ft 5th wheel trailer with 1 pad 😁😁

Appreciate the information, when I am making similar decisions it's all based on condition of the paint. If you are really in this as a business having enough pads won't be an issue.
this is what I do as well it keeps me going and only need to clean up at the end of the day. I also like how i am not over using the pad to the point its destroying my pads and only getting a short life span. A good pad is around $20 so as a business owner its not that expensive to get 5-8 for each step

I really respect all detailers techniques but in my world I don't need 9 pads. Maybe one 6" and one 5 " is more than enough to do the job. Of course you have to clean them regularly.

Hi great video, when you release pads do you put them in water so they dont dry until you get home and wash them or just let then dry.

I use a pressure washer to clean pads. Microfibre pad come out soft like new .
I use about a pad per panel. If it's a very large panel, like, say a roof on a hatchback, it's two pads. The result seems easier to achieve, as well as longer life for the pads.
Thank you Scott , if you will using Megs MF cutting pads how many pads you need ? and what is you tecnique to clean MF cutting pads during work ? I hope you can show the pros and cons of MF cutting pad in your videos.
Try experimenting with the Americana pads. might cut down on the amount of pads you have to use. generates less heat and easy clean. thanks for the video

How many pads for a Texas Limo otherwise known as a Chevy Suburban? Can you describe in further detail?
not a professional by any sense, but one thing i did notice even after clay baring, i noticed polishing step did remove a bunch of embeded dirt. so what i incorporated in my routine is to first polish with a medium pad (one with a lot of pores) with a bunch of lubercant and polish, to cut off all the high level easily removed contamination. This is what i noticed that makes the pad black. then from there I move into heavy duty cutting. so that way i'm not rubbing that lose level contamination on the car when i have the most pressure and cutting step.
you have traffic film that has stained the clear coat or possible migrated into the clear coat because most will use ph neutral soaps exclusively to wash their car..even with a wax on the car the traffic film will go through it and bond to the paint and you will notice it even after claying the vehicle than when you polish it will show up on your pad..i have made many videos about this issue and one reason i believe we should be CLEANING the car more often with a better soap than a traditional car soap to limit this issue in the future

blue333 the level of clean you want ? Wtf is that? Something is either clean or it isn't. Don't use that over priced crap that doesn't clean any better then the 5 dollar a gallon Walmart special. Scott would say use the purple power vehicle and boat power washer concentrate. Sell at Walmart near the power washer supplies only 8 bucks a gallon and actually cleans great.

how do we know if we need 2 steps or 1 step correction
john quiñones it’s actually your choice you can choose to do a Compound and then Polish or just an all in one
avgrim77 well it depends by brand I personally I like the Chemical guys Hexlogic pads and if you’re doing a 2 step use a Yellow pad with your compound and a White pad with your polish of choice
avgrim77 and make sure you use an IPA spray in between each stage especially if you’re using different branded Compound and Polishes
1 for the roof
1 for half the trunk and rear panel
1 for both doors
1 for half the hood and front panel
Times that by 2 is 8 but.... then
you said you use another for the front and rear bumper so doesn’t that add up to 9 pads?

a car enthusiast can use this option as well but i also understand your not up against the time clock or worried about profit margins and giving the customer back the car in a timely fashion .....so you could use less pads but clean them more often but remember to clean your pads throughly and don't let them saturate with compound so your working clean which translates into a better cut and polish..i hope that helps..much love my friend:)

but can you just mention the systemic pad requirements for enthusiast also.for less pads i assume it to be 4 pads each for cutting, polishing and sealing n waxing with pad cleaning in between so the distribution be like = 1 pad for bonnet / front fenders, 1 pad for roof and boot lid ; 1 pad passenger side doors n rear fender ; 1 pad for driver side doors n rear fender.
What’s the best way to clean pads I am not in the business but like to care of my car. I don’t have a pad cleaner.

Cost and price have nothing to do with each other. You charge what the customer is willing to pay (what the going rate is), then your job is to keep costs below that to make a profit for yourself. The more you can charge and the lower your costs translates into the most you can make.

Hey Scott great idea and great procedure. I'm going to have to build up and save up to get a few pads. I have a question though. When you discard your pads in between your polishing job do you throw the pads in a bucket of warm water and a little bit of a PC while you're working that way the compound doesn't dry into the pad? Or does it really matter is it necessary to do that?
i think thats a good idea..but typically i just throw them in a bag and wash them when i get home..but your idea could make cleaning them later easier...so i like it:)

even as a home detailer, doing this once or twice a year... I think I'd rather have a bunch of fresh new pads to get the job done. I have another car to drive. but I don't wanna have one in the garage forever washing and reusing one pad. hmm.. I dunno.
Scott, I used purple power to wash my car for the first time. I then followed it with HD Speed. Guess what, for the first time, my pad was only dirty with clear coat and product. The pad wasn't black after working on my white car!
Driveway Reflections Detail so it worked out nicely then? What are your final thoughts about purple power Vehicle and boat wash?
Lucas Ornelas it cleans the paint well. The only issue I found is that I had a few brown specks on the horizontal panels of my car (maybe sap or rail dust) that were very hard to get off. It cleaned bugs very well and even though I flayed my car back in May, it did not need claying again before my wax application which the purple power may have played a hand in it.

detailed image is great!..i found those griots orange correcting pads for 23.00 dollars for 3 pads...so i purchased 4 bags for a total of 12 pads..thats less than 8.00 dollars a pad and with the way i use them they will last longer and provide me great cut for longer:)

lsxnation I'm guessing you need less to polish because you aren't taking off as much clear coat or other contaminants because it's not aggressive and the compound has already done that. I'd assume you divide the use of each one as evenly as possible. Just divide the car into approx. quarters and let it go. Don't over think the moment.
You can do it even with 2 pads it just gonna take you a lot of time cleaning them

Isn't this method 9 pads , 1x roof, 2x quarters and half trunk, 2x doors each side, 2x fenders and half hood, 2x bumpers , I did the math and it confused me for a sec cause I was coming up with 9 .. Unless your using 1 pad for both bumpers =) , Either way , I love the info thanks as always !!

You got to wash the pads eventually anyway so I don't know if you're not accounting that time for this job but technically it's still time from that job. besides that if you're not washing them immediately after use. isn't it harder to wash ones the stuff dries completely in your pad. Completely disagree with your statement. I think you're kind of fooling yourself there. But all the other videos I've watched are pretty good so far
