I don't know if others have said this, but damn, guy builds a Cromoly frame single speed mountain bike but then tries to save weight on titanium bolts!!! I love this.... :). You have a sub here.
You have an insane amount of specialized knowledge. Seriously, ..how so much? I would be happy just to figure out bottom brackets, so I could service one on a tour without a ton of drama. Thanks (subbed)
@@MulksBikes The bottom bracket is from Chris King and it's a threadfit 30. There's another video I published with more details on it with the White Ind crankset. Hope it helps!
Had my '18 K.M. as a single-speed for a minute; had gears reinstalled and my legs/body thanked me. Single-speeding not so good for anyone over 30 it turns out..
Hi Keith - yeah, there's been some updates to the bike, but with pre-covid pricing and some deals I found - the current build was a touch under $4k. With new fork, paul stem and sram g2 brakes it's probably just above $4700. Post-Covid prices I'm sure the bike would've been well above $5.5k. Hope that helps.
Hi, it is very cool bike ! Im thinking to get the same version ,but its a bit hard here in Hungary , to spend 860 euros just for a steel frameset ,might sell some of my bikes to get it. Do you know if I like to fit a 135 qr wheel ,will it run in the middle ,or need to dish the wheel ? thanks
Thanks so much! Based on Surly’s website you can run a 135 QR rear wheel, but you will need some adapters that they sell. You might need to dish wheel, but you may not know until you fit it on the bike. Luckily, dishing wheel won’t cost you anything except your labor or a bike mechanic labor costs. Sorry to hear the bike is expensive where you are. The great thing about Surly designs is that it is meant to be very versatile and unique. Good luck!
Very nice setup and bike..!...Can I ask if you had any problem with the Gnot dropout system?..I wonder if it the axle can accidentally slip rearward if you brake really hard..
Hi Luca, thanks for the compliment! Surly recommends 16nm of torque for their thru axles. Although I did not torque to spec, I have not run into any issues of the rear gnot boost slipping. The gnot boost allows for good flexibility, but the downfall is that you have make sure the tire is seated straight. I haven’t found it that big of a deal as it takes an extra few seconds to do it now. At first it took some getting used to, but now its fairly easy. Hope that helps!
Hey man! I am still referencing your Km build for inspiration. I am wondering if you have made any changes, or if you kept it the same? I ended up putting a Pike Ultimate on mine and am building a 29er wheel set with a Paul FHUB and Industry 9 hydra rear laced to Nox Farlow carbon rims. Your still looks great to me!
I'll be doing an updated video as soon as I can find some time! It currently has a Pike Ultimate 140mm fork on it, Paul components Boxcar stem (50mm), and Sram G2 RSC brakes.
maz ditzo the bike comes with both rear and front thru axles, so you will be fine with the supplied parts. The beauty of the gnot boost in the rear is that you can use either 12x142 or 12x148. The rear spacing is at 145 so it can accommodate both without any additional parts!
Nice bike! I just ordered one myself. It’s good to see it with the Problem Solver SS kit. I have SRAM Eagle on my full suspension and was thinking about borrowing the wheelset. What size frame is that one?
TuhanRock Yes, can fit both sizes. However, if you want to run 700c most of the time, you might want to get the Surly Krampus which is essentially the same, but optimized for 29”/700c wheels.
AstrayAgrarian haha, I ask myself this too. But mostly it forces me to work my muscles. It definitely has made me a stronger rider as I have no choice but to use as much muscle to get up those hills. I’ll put the gears back on if I do anything really steep or when I get bored! I use it for just mountain biking and fun. No commuting.
stefan85300 little over 5’9”. I think you’d be happy on a large. You could go either way with your height on the KM or the Krampus. If you wanted something more nimble then do 27.5” wheels on the the KM. If you wanted 29er then def go Krampus.
Bradd Bezaire Hey Bradd, when you get the inset 7 Chris King headset, it comes with a 1.5” Baseplate for a tapered steerer tube. If you are using the stock fork with a straight steerer tube at 1 1/8”, then you will need a Chris King Devolution Baseplate. Here’s one I found online for reference. Hope that helps! www.worldwidecyclery.com/collections/chris-king/products/chris-king-base-plate-30-0mm-id-devo
Bradd Bezaire Yes! This will be the crown race that you need to use on straight steerer forks. As you can see if you have photo pulled up of it, it basically just makes it so the baseplate uses up the extra space that a 1.5” baseplate would take. This Inset 7 headset can be used for both a tapered steerer (common on suspension forks) as well as the stock straight steerer as long as you use the right baseplate. That way you don’t need to ever replace the headset if you decide to switch out forks for some squish!
Beautiful bike! And really interesting video to see, since I'm currently planning a very similar build! I was wondering if you had to do use any spacers with the Chris King BB and the WI cranks? or did it all just fit together?
john whiles Thanks John! So, I had to get the chris king bottom bracket conversion kit for the 30mm spindle. Honestly - its a bit of a trial and error and just have to make sure chainline and q-factor is within your liking. If you want more details around it, I could do a quick video on it as well. Lol
I see! It would be interesting to see a more detailed look at the cranks if you are able. I find it quite hard to understand how this stuff fits together without seeing it!
love the build, i see you got the medium size. how tall are you and how does it fit. Thanks im looking to get one also love the White Industries crank, sweet build
Carravagio16 thanks! I’m a little over 5’9” tall, with a shorter inseam around 30”. I have a longer torso, so stand over height is something I like to watch out for. The medium feels like it is perfect as the sloping tube helps with that issue. I knew I was going to put a short stem - so the reach is very comfortable for me. Hope that helps!
@@anthonysbike wow thanks for the fast reply, I am 6'0 , 32inseem, i really want to get a steel hardtail that i can grow with but ive been nervous doing the whole online ordering without trying first maybe its my age im probably older than you (42) and i want a bike that i can hit the single track with as well as go pick up something from the store and tool around town on. Carravagio16 You could probably fit either sizes large or medium in my opinion. The medium will be easier for you to handle, but with your height and inseam, the Large will be good too. The benefit of the large size is you get a second pair of bottle cages within the frame on the seat tube. I wish the medium had it, but there just isn’t enough space. Obviously fit is super tough, but just look at the geo on the surly site and see how it compares with something similar. That is what I did to compare it with my gravel bike. It’s going to be different obviously, but you can see how the stand over height is and effective top tube looks like. Also, I will get a vid together of the assembly with chris king bb and white industries, just need to plan it out! Stay tuned!
