    So what was the bad instructions on the brakes?
    Running the same on my XL KM, which was used as a gravel touring ride from Spain to Norway. Definitely KM or Krampus is a good choice for tall riders….its top tube is very long, a bit too long for me even with my 25” arms unless I use bars with a good degree of back sweep.

    • @MulksBikes

      I was wrong in the video. I said "Shimano", it was Fox's error. The problem was that Fox had the incorrect information on their website (it was changed after Jon called and they confirmed they'd published it incorrectly) so we had the wrong size adapter on it initially. When the brake was applied it was only hitting part of the rotor, and one of the pistons got cocked sideways. Wouldn't retract no matter what was tried. We had to wait a week for the wrong adapter to show up and had the correct one in stock the entire time. Precisely why I had someone other than me build it 😅

      Thanks for watching - I called Surly a dozen times over the years with those questions, they're always extremely helpful. It's spec'd at 140, you can also verify a lot of those details in the FAQ on their site. It's mentioned a half dozen times. It's been very helpful in all my builds. Good luck with your KM conversion - I'm sure it'll be sweet!

    Why does it look like their is little to no drop in the top tube, but others look a little more aggressive with a little more drop. is it because it's xl and I've been looking at Ls or all with angle of the photo I'm just confused

    • @MulksBikes
      @MulksBikes  Год назад

      I'm assuming that's a question. The top tube doesn't drop on an XL frame like it does on the little frames. Logically the angles would be too obtuse for strength and still accomplish the required reach. If that's what you're asking. Thanks for watching!

    Nice build! I am curious as to why your mechanic had trouble with the XT brakes. They come ready to just trim the lines and install, pretty easy for an amateur, let alone a mechanic. Has he never installed brakes before? Was there a part missing or something?

    • @shakedown4769
      @shakedown4769 Год назад +3

      The problem was with Fox's shitty specs for the fork. A lot of forks have been going to 180 post mount and this was the just-released 34 for 2022, so I double-checked the spec and sure enough it was still 160 post mount. Ordered the appropriate adapter, threw it on there without a second thought, and started doing the partial bleed after shortening the hose. Long story short one of the pistons got cocked sideways because it WAS actually 180 post mount and just the bottom edge of the pad was touching the rotor. It wouldn't retract no matter what I tried so I bought Mulk a new caliper and then called Fox to bitch them out. They changed the specs on the website later that day. To add to the frustration, I remember it took something like a week to get what turned out to be the wrong adapter, and I had the right one in stock the whole time.

      @@myfreakyvalentine I'll be generous with myself and say I had a 50/50 chance of catching it. If I'd had the wheel on first and then mounted the caliper, I would have obviously seen it sitting high. Instead, I installed the brake first and of course the wheel went right in, never even occurred to me to check clearance since I'd already done the legwork to figure out what was needed. All's well in the end though.

    I’m sorry but if a “mechanic” can’t figure out whether it’s 160 vs 180 post mount when installing brakes then they probably don’t have any business working on bikes, that’s ridiculous.
