As a CFII flight instructor with thousands of hours flight time, I have seen so many of these types of pilots. They have lots of money, want to fly expensive, high performance airplanes, but don't have the experience or flight time needed to fly them safely. I came close to being fired more than once for refusing to sign off customers not qualified to fly the plane they wanted to rent. Sadly, I have seen other instructors sign off pilots who were no where close to being qualified because the customer gave them a few hundred bucks on the side. I always took my instructor rating very seriously and got dozens of people their private, commercial, instrument, and flight instructor ratings. All were ready and well trained, got their ratings, and I do not know of a single one having an aircraft accident. Flying is not a rich person's game, it is very serious and should always be taken that way. You can be serious about safety and still have fun. I treasure my flying memories.
It's good there are checks & balances such as you to reduce the number of accidents.

You are absolutely correct, I applaud you and your judgment which is excellent. People don’t take flying seriously especially those who are rich and wealthy thinking a small plane is a “toy” when they are not because there will always be serious consequences when they take unnecessary risks by flying out of control. And these pilots should think twice about the people on the ground that can perish because of their irrational and selfish behavior. Congratulations Sir, you seem to be a very intelligent, caring, and experienced pilot who has a high degree of knowledge. I am afraid of flying but I would fly with you with my eyes closed knowing I would be safe. Kudos to you 👍👍🙌🙌👏👏👏🙂

I treasure my memories in the air too. My father was an instrument-rated flight instructor and I used to go up with him. I got taught at a VERY early age how to handle a plane safely and it was a lot of fun for me as a kid to be his co-pilot, reading checklists and helping prep the plane for startup (at his instruction). One of the things he taught me right from the get go is "Respect the airplane, and it'll respect you." Plenty of rich folks make good, responsible (and a few amazingly talented) pilots, but these two yobbos weren't among them. I'm sorry you had to deal with employers that put dollars above the safety of their own planes, not to mention you!!
That Lidle crash was the most bizarre. An inexperienced pilot with a flight instructor on board, flying into areas he shouldn't have been.
Cory Lidle's plane crashed into the Belaire Apartments on October 11th 2006. A fire soon engulfed several apartments. In addition to the death of Cory and his flight instructor Tyler Stangler, 21 people were injured including 11 firefighters. The most serious injuries were to a woman named Ilana Benhuri, who's 30th floor apartment Lidle's plane crashed nose first into. She was in the hospital until November 10th 2006 being treated for severe burns.

@@paulkoza8652 more people knew who he was obviously but we all were wondering about the residents of the apartment. People care for all souls involved but you need to know names and faces first. Most people knew of Lidle but that doesn't make his loss more tragic than the others.

What I remember most about Cory Lidle's crash was, I admit, feeling a slight sense of relief when investigators determined the crash was not intentional. I lived in NYC (a Yankees fan), the crash was a plane going into a building, it was only 5 years after 9/11, and I was a senior in high school.

The Lidle crash must have been terrifying for the two passengers. Turning as hard as you can and seeing that building looming up in front of you with no escape.
Simply understanding your surroundings and climbing a little bit before doing the turn wouldve been enough.

They had the capability to fly higher than any of the buildings, so why not?

Another NY Yankee baseball player that also died in a plane crash was Thurman Munson on August 2, 1979. He was practicing landings and takeoffs. He also had limited experience overall and was operating a newer, larger plane.
I remember it well. I was just shy of 12 years old when it happened. I hope TFC covers his accident one of these days.
I was a die hard Phillies fan. I watched both Cory Lidle and Roy Halladay pitch for the Phillies. Sat down left field line when he pitched a 2005 game home vs the Dodgers. On a side note, Cory Lidle was shown studying weather maps towards attaining his pilot’s license in a 2005 Phillies yearbook video documentary. Also saw Doc throw 8 shutout innings against the Mets at Citi Field in 2010. Both were shocking and terribly sad days.

The thing that stands out to me personally is the shockingly few hours on the aircraft types.
Every pilot, learning a new type, starts with zero hours on that type. The only way to increase that is to fly the plane, initially with an instructor but eventually on his own. Why do you find that shocking?

I was at Cory Lidle's final game: a Detroit fan booing him loudly as he entered the game and then cheering myself hoarse as he gave up three runs in one inning to seal the deal on my Tigers' 2006 ALDS victory. I definitely felt a bit bad in retrospect when I learned he was dead only 72 hours later.

How either of the two pilots ever got their PPL is somewhat a mystery to me.
I remember the first accident on 72nd Street well; I was practically rund the corner on 65th - it was horribly reminiscent of 9/11 at first when we did not know what had actually happened. Looking back I remember being amazed that that small plane crash caused so much dense black smoke and fire...!

Halladay had a reputation for being more than a little more than a risk taker. That combination of drugs, wow. By the way, Zolpiden is Ambien, and one of the others, is a serious antidepressant. And then amphetamine? This guy should have never gotten into this plane. Also, alot of these meds have long half lifes, so he was just adding more fuel to his pharmaceutical fire.

I don't know, but damn, that was some high level crazy, especially with so little time in that plane.
It's certainly possible, whenever one of these celebrities die in circumstances where a death wish is a possibility, my paycheck to paycheck mind says "what does it take to make you happy to be alive" but that isn't fair either I guess. I sure feel bad for his family.

I don't think people like that realize they are suicidal, but yes I agree with you.
Halladay was definitely a suicide. Given the super-dangerous mix of drugs he was on, he was on a track to kill himself one way or another and his decided method was in keeping with his tremendous narcissism and need to present high-impact moments to others. This one was literally "high impact", so his suicide was a 100 percent success.
The amphetamine could be Adderall. The Ambien brought him down, and the Adderall boosted him back up too high, and them more Ambien, then...........rinse repeat.
It's a roller coaster....much like his flight maneuvers.

As a pilot myself, with no agenda, I have to say I think these kinds of crashes can only be explained by impaired judgment, i.e., drugs or alcohol. Small planes are very predictable unless there are mechanical problems. Every pilot learns that winds and weather are highly unpredictable, so you always need to have an altitude cushion when flying over mountains or skyscrapers. The wind can grab and bounce you around as if you were a toy. These pilots would have been fine with 1,500 extra feet of altitude. Very tragic lapses of judgment.
Halladay's was drugs. Lidle's was str8 inexperience.
Re the Lidle case: I am not familiar with NYC airspace, but with 3 major airports close by, I would bet that it was not legal to operate VFR at a higher altitude.
@@pac1261 If not 1,500 ft. maybe 1,000 ft? Perhaps it wouldn't be legal, but it would save their lives and the bill for huge property damage of the condos that burned.

The CFI was crazy for not knowing their altitude was VERY insufficient for the city skyscraper terrain.

I was in a GA emergency situation w/ my student pilot friend that COULD have turned deadly.
Praise God, he showed far better judgement that Cory Lidles CFI, or I'd be dead right now.
The Halliday crash reminded me of Colin McRae helicopter crash. He was also thrill seeking and flying too low with hardly any flight time, and I don’t think he even had a valid pilot’s license.
These guys have very high self confidence from being an all time great rally driver or pitcher that seemed to lead to overconfidence in their flying skills.
Theres another rally driver that died in 2001 by flying his helicopter into IMC named Bertie Fisher, the front seats or the helicopter bottom were fiberglass and came loose in his crashing helicopter. If the seats hadn’t have broken loose he and the other front passenger might have survived.
Among the substances found in the second pilot's system are an anti-depressant and a sleep aid. It's possible he was having a manic episode and was improperly diagnosed or medicated. If he was depressed, a doctor might prescribe him an anti-depressant, which in Bipolar people can trigger a manic episode. If he was having a manic episode, he would have trouble sleeping, which he would have been prescribed the sleep aid for. Now, why he still had it in his system is probably an indicator that he was trying to get high, but I don't know how long Zolpidem stays in your system.
Either way, among the symptoms of mania is risky behavior. That sure looked like risky behavior to me.
But this is just speculation. I just recognized those drugs because I used to take them myself before I was properly diagnosed.

Shouldn't any diagnosis of the sort prevent him from being licensed? Medications?
@@getmeouttatennessee4473 I've heard they can, and he might have hid those diagnoses from his bosses. I've heard of other pilots hiding their mental status out of fear of being fired, but I'm no expert.

I remember both of these.
There was just... zero excuse for either of these crashes. The Lidle crash was particularly tragic; he smashed the plane into a high rise apartment complex and terribly injured a number of people, including firefighters. Where on Earth was his flight instructor when he was zooming toward controlled airspace in the middle of the East River? He should have been on the horn with Kennedy ATC asking permission to execute a balloon turn or climb into controlled airspace before they reached the Brooklyn Bridge!
There's a sense that both of these were young dudes that thought they were invincible (especially Halladay and his drug cocktail). But Mother Nature and the laws of physics always bat last, and their batting average is 1.000. Being a pilot myself I understand the urge to stretch your wings and test the envelope of your aircraft, or go and see some of the sights in places like the East River. But airplanes, particularly small ones, are absolutely unforgiving if you push them past their safe envelopes of operation. A little light sport job like the A5 is *NOT* a "jet fighter." It's a low altitude, low-speed plane that lets you puddle-jump and go backpacking somewhere, not do vertical climb-outs.
The really sad irony? The Icon A5 has a bailout parachute system in case you get in over your head. IIRC, Halladay's plane had the chute, but he never even tried to deploy it.

The pilot didn't have good spatial awareness, judgement, to try to complete a turn like that. All he had to do was straighten it out, and climb. It could've been easy to prevent, to not hit a skyscraper.
Agree, it was preventable furthermore, what if he overflew a restricted area, it would be better to deal with the FAA than the mortician.
Halladay was high as a kite and thought he was Maverick. He wasn't...
A5 is a jet ski not a fighter jet. And you have be aware that jet skis are not intended to fly, so you have to pay attention!

I think Halladay decided to crash deliberately. The drugs were to give him courage and numb him out, and the erratic flying was warm-up attempts. Just my opinion based on the sequence of events.
I'm sorry about Lidle and the instructor. It seems as though they should have been able to find a way out of that.
I think Halladay blacked out. He was known to use drugs and have erratic behavior when not pitching. The drugs and flying were part of his adrenaline rush. I think the multiple dolphin movements were him getting and adrenaline rush from the drugs and hypoxia and he simply blacked out on the last upward movement.
That's what I was wondering, if it were a suicide.

It happens a lot. I don't think most citizens of NYC cared. Hell...I was at work in lower Manhattan on September 11, 2001. That was a big incident because of the prominence of the buildings that were struck and the carnage afterwards but as @rstidman has pointed out...airplanes have hit buildings in NYC many times.

So let's see (first incident): A wealthy baseball player who is a rookie pilot, along with his idiot flight instructor, neither of whom understand the flight envelope of the Cirrhus, are supposed to fly WEST from Teterboro but instead decide to sightsee around New York City. They are surrounded by super-tall buildings, have no ATC clearance and then crash the airplane. On top of that, New York City is a zoo: you have La Guardia Airport often seeing planes landing every minute (when I worked at La Guardia Hospital in Queens, I once saw planes passing my window every 30 seconds); you have Kennedy, with lots of international and cross country flights, and a busy cargo schedule; and you have Newark International. An air traffic controller has his hands full trying to keep everything straight at La Guardia; somebody at Kennedy is doing same. What do these controllers think of a sight-seeing pilot deciding to take a joyride up the East River? Do you think they will tell him "We're bored; thanks for flying by," or do you think they want to tell him "Get your dumb ass out of my airspace before you kill yourself or 150 other people on a 737 trying to land?" What the pilot and his instructor should have done is take off from Teterboro, head WEST and go straight to their intended intermediate stop, and stay away from high traffic corridors. second incident (Florida): A pilot taking drugs proven to have psychoactive effects and incompatible with safely operating an aircraft, ship or motor vehicle decided he was a fighter pilot, crashed and killed himself. I can only be grateful he didn't kill anyone else.
I remember a previous report / video on this. What amazed me was that anyone could fly VFR in that particular East River corridor. I live in London and never been to the East Coast.
They SHOULD have known about the abrupt (though widened)180 needed at the end if no clearance was given to go further. I'm not clear if they requested ATC clearance to continue further or if it would ever be allowed.
Two experienced pilots as passengers, surely one of them knew, but didn't think to warn him until too late.
Sorry for them all on board (whoever started that manouvre) and the lady who was severely burned in her apartment, as well as the countless (well countable) injuries mentioned by others here.
Has this East River zone changed, anyone? I think it was alluded to previously.
@@pomerau Fixed wing aircraft that aren't seaplanes going to/from the seaplane base have been prohibited from the East River exclusion. It was only ever useful for helicopters and seaplanes anyway, so nothing has really changed from a practical point of view.
As for why it wasn't set up this way to begin with, I guess nobody thought anyone would be stupid enough to fly a fixed wing aircraft in there at too high an airspeed to turn around. So they just used the same general rules for the East River and Hudson River exclusions, and figured that fixed wing traffic would stick to the Hudson exclusion where it actually made sense for them to be.

Curious if there were any rule changes over New York? Would it have been so bad to just let them fly straight through? Why couldnt you fly past the river? Why make planes turn in a tight area over the city? I am not a pilot so go easy if these seem like dumb questions.
Your questions aren't dumb. That airspace is extremely congested, with several major and other airports sharing it, and so the restrictions are very sensible. But airspace rules weren’t a part of the problem here, because a competent pilot researches them, plans for them, and flies by them except during an emergency. The pilot here wasn’t competent.

In the second airplane accident, and with so many medicines in his system, no wonder Roy Halladay’s judgment was impaired. Gosh, he should have not been flying at all. Perhaps he wanted to crash that plane deliberately as in suicide??? Who knows, nothing was said about that but it is a possibility.
And in the first accident, I remember it very well being that day my birthday when that small aircraft hit that building in Manhattan. Cory Lidle should have been more careful flying a plane in that narrow corridor……maybe he would be alive today. Very sad and tragic when these small planes are involved in accidents. They are very

I wouldn't say stupid. These guys didn't have the aptitude to be pilots. Taking aviation for granted, and not seeing you don't have what it takes to pilot an aircraft, can get you killed. It's easy to get in over your head, when flying a plane, if you don't know what you're doing.
Munson was high on power when he killed himself.
