    Especially awesome video: “I resent trimming”; “I got a bit too reapy”!!!!! 😂😂😂 Cathy, I am a ruler person: if you get a 16.5” square ruler you can align the goose leg on the 45 degree line, the point on the 4.25” line and trim from there. Likely more precise (see how I’m selling the idea to you!? 🤣) and way quicker! Also, FYI you just made a controlled scrappy quilt! I will bring you to the scrappy side yet! XOX Happy Thanksgiving and if this is the last video before your break - enjoy your time with the fam! 😘

    • @TheCatBirdQuilts
      @TheCatBirdQuilts  8 месяцев назад +5

      Thank you, Anne!❤️ Yes, I do feel the selling, but I don't mind--it's a friend sharing something they love, not a door-to-door salesman selling! 😂😘 I doubt I'll ever be a ruler person, but you never know! And yes, "controlled scrappy" LOL. Maybe one day I'll graduate to uncontrolled scrappy! 🤩
      This is the last video before the break, so happy holidays to you and yours!

    I just had to pause the video to comment... I just love your videos! Your comments are so relatable from the 'oopsie' moment of over aggressive seam reaping (😂), to not ever really checking to see what all those lines on a favorite ruler are meant to do (🧐). Thank you Cathy. To help a person not clip off the top point of the goose by sewing too close, one should really start trimming the TOP or point of the goose instead of the bottom as you demonstrated. Check to make sure there's 1/4" from the top to the edge. If there is then you trim more from the bottom (wide) edge to trim. If there isn't 1/4" then you can note that (I put a pin on the top) if you need to take less than 1/4" at the top.along the entire seam so it will lay flat.

    Another great video! I have yet to enter the world of thrifting shirts for fabric because I have too much quilting cotton and the only thrift store in my large rural county thinks its used clothing should cost as much as the neighboring retail shops. However, I buy a lot of estate sale fabric. Saving fabric from the landfill, either way. Your videos always give me great ideas and frankly I just like listening to you. I have made close to 200 quilts (foster kids and grandkids mostly) but somehow managed to mostly avoid flying geese. I have no idea why. I don’t think it was intentional. I will have to put this quilt on my list for another way to use up some of another quilter’s stash that has somehow worked its way into my stash. Thank you for another fun and informative video.

      Where did you find the chart? Do I can go get one. I'd like to change up the size for a table runner or bed footy thingy. I also like miniatures. Yeah, it is still a lot of work. It is fussy. I am an exacting eye - I'll redo should I have missed something. "I am the daughter of an engineer!". Love the craft.!!!! Thank you.

    Ok, friends..you must watch Carol Thelen..a professional quilting instructor teach 4 at time flying geese! Not that Cathy is not giving good instructions, it’s just that this lady is so good. She has several videos on this subject. Also, I trim my geese with a square ruler just a little bigger than I need and use painter’s to mark my geese size and away I go! I’m careful to check all sides, but the tape helps your eyes target that geese size. And..also..the invention of trimming to size..thank goodness! (KH)

    I’m thinking that a single flying geese block is just that - one flying geese block. I’m thinking the block represents a single flight of geese. In the fall and spring in goose country, the sky sometimes contains several V’s of geese; that is several groups of geese flying in the V formation. One V = one flight of geese. Thus each block shows a V of geese, flying. Geese only form a V when flying, after all.

    It's gorgeous and it's on my 'make that' list, but I want to make it bigger (king size) and this is an easy pattern to do that without breaking my brain doing the maths 😅
    I came across another quilt pattern recently on the Missouri Star channel called the Secret garden quilt and thought it would be a good shirt quilt pattern....letme know what you think???

    Hi. This is my first time watching and I love Kaffe fabrics! Thanks for bringing this pattern to our attention. I haven't used thrifted shirts yet for quilting, but I have unraveled sweaters for crocheting and knitting. So yay for thrifting! I wonder if you have figured out how much per yard thrifted shirts cost? They are usually $3.50 each around these parts (unless they up the price in the new year), so I was just wondering how economical it is. Of course, recycling fabric is a great idea in itself. Just an FYI: I have bad astigmatism , so "staying in the road" ain't easy. So I draw lines! Thanks!

    I have had the same
    experience this last time around. I loved the quilt pattern, and I knew the recipient would love the quilt pattern. As I assembled the top, it never quite hit the sweet spot. After staring at the finished top for about a week, I realized I had chosen the wrong pattern, and that was the issue.
    I would love to send you a picture to discuss. What is your business email?

    My daughter's husband passed away about 5 years ago, and we saved a lot of his shirts to hopefully one day make a quilt for her son out of his first Daddy's shirts. The problem is they are a mixture of T-shirts, work shirts, and dress shirts. I can sew and I have put together quilts before, but this feels out of my league and I don't want to mess it up. Can you give me some advice? How do I look for a person who could possibly put this quilt top together?

    • @TheCatBirdQuilts
      @TheCatBirdQuilts  6 месяцев назад +1

      Darlene, I'm so sorry that I'm just now responding---somehow I missed this comment! It does seem like it would be tricky to put together t-shirts, work shirts AND dress shirts! 😱 And since you have an emotional connection, I think it might be even more challenging to make it yourself. I wish I knew someone who made these types of quilts, but I bet if you Google "memory shirt quilts" or go on Etsy and search memory quilts, you can find a great maker to put your son-in-law's clothes into a beautiful quilt for your daughter!
