How Paradigm's New Founder 40B Standmounter Bridges the US:UK Loudspeaker Divide

  • In this episode, David argues that this unusually shaped new standmount speaker is 'the thinking man's US speaker' - the reason being that it's actually made in Canada! It's a kind of halfway house between punchy and loud USA voicing and the more genteel and neutral sound that the UK prefers.
Mike isn't completely convinced, but being [a] nice and [b] a Rush fan, he's as generous as he can be to this baby Paradigm. The guys sort-of agree to disagree, but certainly David comes away impressed.
Each episode of Hi-Fi Riff features Mike and David's unedited, unexpurgated views about all manner of weird and wonderful hi-fi designs. Business executive Mike has a wealth of knowledge from previous hi-fi retail experience, and David has written about hi-fi for thirty years. Now Editor-in-Chief of StereoNET, he's picked up a few things along the way.

Amongst all the hifi chattering on RUclips, your channel stands apart as a cozy 20 or so minutes of fascinating anecdotes, unique insights, and warm humor. The pace and tone is relaxing, the information trusted, and the friendly banter is a true pleasure. Above all, your videos have heart, if such a thing is possible in a short chat about audio. Thank you from an older hippie girl in Seattle, USA!

My first ‘proper’ hifi had JBL 4333’s and they were all that for sure except you need two men to move them!

Yes I did enjoy the riff, just like perusing a hifi mag looking at interesting things but not wanting to buy. It’s nice to build one’s knowledge of what is available in the market place just incase the buying bug bites!

I've not traditionally been into the 'North American sound', although the new Martin Logan Motion XT100's are turning my head..
These sound interesting to me and I'd like to hear them! I should imagine that with that rear facing porting they would need to be well away from walls to avoid bass boom though...

The Martin Logans (f200) and Paradigms (100f) are both fantastic for music. But if you're going to use them for home theater, the Founder 90c center blows away Martin logans center channel. And I'm an amt lover, so that's saying something.

Paradigm are of course in Mississauga not Toronto, which although next to Toronto is not Toronto. Much the same as Hove is not Brighton. I am aware that if you said Mississauga the viewers would have been baffled as to where that is. Paradigm used to be a customer of mine years ago, nice bunch of people.

I love British speakers, as well as speakers from many other parts of Europe. Regarding American speakers (and amps for that matter), I guess they have a reputation for big and bold sound. But I hate to think that Klipsch and JBL are viewed as the standard for North American speakers. I think both are good, but only in their upper ranges. It would be great if you could try out some speakers from Joseph Audio, DeVore Fidelity and Sonner Audio, among other high end brands, to appreciate the breadth of diversity and quality in North American loudspeakers.

What these (and most) non-N. American semi-literate "audiophiles" don't understand is that our houses are built entirely differently than anywhere else (exc Australia).

Each speaker weighs 11.3kg, pretty heavy for a small stand mounter - not that weight is an automatic guarantor of quality, of course...

    • @selo8050
      @selo8050 Год назад +1

@@MrVinylista but it guarantees your upper body fitness levels considering each speaker weighs 11kg. My comment wasn't actually serious one. They are heavier than I had expected. I personally have to keep fit if I want to experiment on the positioning of my ATC 19's. Each weighs 19kg.

Having to explain a joke is a little but like trying to convince someone that there is, or was, a good power trio out of Toronto, something you shouldn't rush into or even be into.

Audiophiles fall into two categories. Detail, which tend to be forward and energetic like klipsch, focal, B&W and others. OR the gentle and polite/smooth ranging from Harbeth and dynaudio to quad. One camp usually dismisses the other. There is, however only so far one can go with softening transients before a speakers sound dull, lifeless and unrealistic.

Every house in N. America is wood construction with hollow walls. That eats bass and a lot of everything else.
Outside North America, houses are masonry. That reinforces bass and a lot of everything else.
Euro speakers come to Canada and they sound anemic. No power, no dynamic range, no bass, no detail. A bland porridge.
