What a great riff! You two are a joy to watch with your good-natured banter, ribbing and lifetime friendship. While I have long known of the TDA 1541A S2, I wasn't sure in which specific products it was implemented. The Philips CD960 looks to have been extremely well-manufactured, and IMO its quirky outward design only add to its charm 37 years later. FWIW, if you can find this unit for sale anywhere, you can still find the rubber belts on ebay which need to be replaced from time to time. Love your channel and thank you!

Late to the CD game, I bought one of these new in 1990 as my first CD player. If I had not found a dealer offering them on sale, I likely would have bought a Philips-made Magnavox unit instead. All these years (and a few belt changes) later, the CD960 still going strong. Unlike all of my friends I elected to hang on to my vinyl (my CD player purchase was actually delayed by a turntable upgrade). These days I still enjoy both LPs and CDs in addition to my other sources.

Hi I had a Suzuki TC100 two stroke in the early seventies. I also have a Phillips CDP-CD620 which has the TDA1541A DAC chip in it and the CDM4 transport. It is an R1 and not an S1 chip, however I had this modified with a Tricord clock and updated power supplies and filter by Joe Rasmussen in Sydney Australia when it was purchased and it still sounds amazing today. He has also done mods to my Oppo 105 which is to this day my reference CD player in my main system. The Oppo is more detailed and analytical compared to the Philips which is more analogue sounding. I wish I could attach a photo of the innards of this as it’s an incredible amount of work that Joe has done to this player. The Philips CDP CD620 is also a bargain and a great performer.

  • @barrettwbenton
    @barrettwbenton 5 дней назад

Cool bit of parallel-play for me here:
    - I was dealing in new and used high-end audio when I got hold of a CD960 we took in on trade, then managed to get hold of Phillips' S2 chipped and (very nervously) hot-rodded the 960 by desoldering the original S1 chip and soldering the S2 in: memory serves that there was a *bit* (pun unintended) of overall improvement, but I'm not entirely sure it was worth the rather nerve-racking effort of souping-up the player, especially given that the laser would eventually fail on me after about two years. Certainly the second-best Phillips player made (the two-box transport/DAC, of which there were apparently several examples). Fun while it lasted, though.
    - Music: Grace Jones' *Island Life* is fantastic, but my fave track is her cover of Piaf's "La Vie en Rose", which fir me is far-and-away the best contemporary take on that classic. Also agree on Thomas Dolby's *The Flat Earth* as being as good in its own way as his debut *TGAOW* . I certainly gave all the above albums lots of play on the 960, pre- and post-mod.

Mine cost 20 euros at a thrift store in Amsterdam. Philips made some fantastic players. After getting this I went on a CDM1 binge. Most indeed have the TDA1540 dac. Downside is you cant use an external dac. Marantz (cd 84) probably offers the best build quality, B&0's CDX also great but fragile in areas. The CD960 is very nice but imo some of the Sony ES players are even nicer. SONY CDP-337ESD has dual TDA1541's and has beautiful build quality.

It is my "go to" budget power amp.
Pound for pound it takes a lot to better it, and there are few speakers which David and I review which it cannot drive.
Admittedly it's not in the same class as the 1v, but it's a quality amp.
Hats off again to John Farlowe

The battleship build Marantz CD80 is aesthetically more pleasing to the eye and sonically superior, in my opinion. Great riff.... CD rules!

In the 80s to 2000s I insisted that all cd players sounded the same, as a pompous mrknowitall Yank.
These days I know better, as my audio gear IQ has leapt off the charts, and I'm also now a flaterther, chaps.

It's funny how when we're young we know everything, but nothing. Age certainly makes one a more rounded human being - and that applies just as much with hi-fi as anything else.

Thomas Dolby. Splashed out 7 grand on a new wig, recently. Tempted? Would link the video but it would just be removed.

I imagine so, sporting the fine mop you have. I do sometimes wonder, though, if Mike doesn't harbour some eny every time he's confronted with it?

      I love TD's Barnet.
I'm secretly hoping that Karl Pilkington watches Riff and he discards his one in my direction.

I don't honestly think it's as impressive as Dave's. Have to say, a goodly portion of my attention watching you both, is, looking at the hair - and the lack of it. I do, myself, fall into the latter camp, sadly.

@@davidwilliams2840 You are stating it, but it's your judgement based on your gear, ears, environment, state of mind and so on. There are so many variables that might not be identical in everyone else's life. I've got a CD version of "Slave To The Rhythm" which sounds amazing but I cannot say that it is absolutely better than vinyl.

I'll happily buy it on vinyl to double check in that case 👍
