Bring the Future – Why NAD's Masters Series M33 Amplifier is Tomorrow's Integrated, Today
In this episode, the boys continue their recent long run of integrated amplifier reviews with this big, technology-packed marvel - one that comes with everything except the kitchen sink. The guys are beguiled by its massive power output and smooth, Class D sound - along with its myriad other positives - but being 1980s throwbacks, it's just a little too far from their comfort zone!
Every episode of Hi-Fi Riff features Mike Evans' and David Price's unedited, unexpurgated views about all manner of weird and wonderful hi-fi designs. Business executive Mike has a wealth of knowledge from previous hi-fi retail experience, and David has written about hi-fi for thirty years. Now Editor-in-Chief o...

Simply Years Ahead: Thanks to its Ingenious 16-bit DAC, the Philips CD960 Is a Cult 1980s CD Player

Mike and David pay homage to this aristocrat of late eighties CD players, arguing that its Philips TDA1541A S2 DAC and digital filter chips give it an exceptionally musical and engaging sound. Don't be fooled by its generic 'black box' looks, this is a really special digital disc player, the guys decide! Every episode of Hi-Fi Riff features Mike and David's unedited, unexpurgated views about al...

Don't Be Fooled by the Retro Styling: Hi Fi Rose's RA280 is a State of the Art Integrated Amp
Просмотров 6 тыс.Месяц назад
Mike and David go a little 'off piste' in this episode, to review a South Korean-designed and made, mid-price integrated amplifier that's actually quite purist in its design. Look beyond its seventies-tastic styling, and you'll find a hugely powerful and highly advanced implementation of Class D. The guys agree that it sounds surprisingly good - so if you're as deaf as a post or have speakers a...

After two years at the top with its CXN (v2), Cambridge Audio has tweaked its best-seller to make the new CXN 100. Mike and David agree that it's a better all-round product - with improved sound, functionality and display - but Mike misses the older model's slightly romantic voicing. He would say that though, wouldn't he? Every episode of Hi-Fi Riff features Mike and David's unedited, unexpurga...

This week Mike and David get their flares flapped by this striking, in-your-face retro standmounting loudspeaker. As you'd expect from any JBL Classic series design, it wins no prizes for delicacy - but it can certainly do dynamics. Super-fast and punchy sounding, it's very different to most modern loudspeakers. Not long after they decided that the full Class A Sugden A21SE is the best thing since sliced bread, Mike and David finally set ears upon its Class AB Rega rival - and get a serious surprise! Hi the majistra are 88db not 86 db , i have the ministra 86db , not really knowing much about sensitivity and amp matching , would these be a significant upgrade over my ministras which i feel need a lot of volume to get the best out of them with my roksan attessa streaming amp , should i stick with the ministra and swap my amp out ,or with the 2db increase be a better match for my amp . Great review as always , thanks

I like the music you listen to. I don't own any Depeche Mode albums after Violator, but I found a remix of one of their songs accidentally on a Kruder & Dorfmeister compilation CD. It's their remix of Depeche Mode - Useless (K&D Session TM), and I like to test it out on my new gear. Thanks for the videos, they are great.

Hi fellas! This time it took you a bit less to get to the actual review - what were you thinking?! Now, don’t disappoint me now!! Joking aside, I actually had a good listen to this amplifier. In one word - stunning! To expand on the definition, it was as clear as a bell, very wide stereo image that expanded beyond the confines of a very good sounding room. Detail resolution was excellent too. It also does everything you can ask from an amplifier - lots of power, lots of connections - lots of everything actually! It also aligns itself to the room it is in. Very clever stuff. Build, too, is exemplary. All of that being said, I was actually quite stunned by how good and actually better in some areas the Denon that I own sounded. The NAD has more than twice the power output, at least on paper, but in real-world condition, Denon seems to be the more powerful amplifier. More tightness, more grip and yes, more evocative midrange. It just goes to show how important an actual audition is. Also, what a brilliant MM/MC phono section in the Denon! I think it’s interesting but if I were ten years younger, I am certain the NAD would appeal to me more. But since I am not, I am a bit tired of touchscreen interfaces and sometimes just prefer the feel of metal buttons and knobs. HIFI gear can look great and it certainly doesn’t do it any harm. It can also sound good but ultimately, if it doesn’t ‘feel’ good, then I know it isn’t for me. Still waiting for that MiniDisc review, though! Cheers!

Over 40 years of CD development (as well as Grace Jones' bad mood) and somehow some of the earliest ones (Marantz, Aiwa, Philips) still sound the best. Unlike Gerry Rafferty very few CD players got it (tone and texture) right next time. Interesting that bitstream is now seen as a backwards step. It was all the rage back then.

I have an original Saturn (14 yr old with new transport just fitted) feeding the first Rega DAC. Amp is the Rega Elex-R which is superb for the money. Speakers are 24 yr old Celestion A1 stand mounts. I absolutely love this set up. Detailed, warm with deep controlled bass and huge scale. Holographic imaging is the icing on the cake. I find it hard to believe things could get any better but do wonder what the Aethos would bring to the party. Sorely tempted to give it a go. Just don't want to upset the lovely balance I have at present. Sometimes bigger is not always better.

All I can say is Audiophool and I'd spend 5K on speakers, just not these. I love everything about the with the exception of Price. No freaking way and went all the ay to Memphis to hear the with Twin MAC mono blocks and was impressed, just not $5K impressed. I know each person perceives sound differently. No way in hell these come close in anyway to the Klipsch Cornwall or any Old school speakers half that price. But if that profile fits the Listener More power to them. One man's Trash is another man's Bliss! That goes for all and any Sex BTW!

Having been an M33 owner for getting on 2 years (and an M10 for longer) I would have liked a discussion of sound quality of phono inputs, built-in streamer and headphone socket. Still you can't have everything and it was good to hear your views. One thing that annoys me about the M33, which has been on the market for a few years now, is the lack of upgrades for the MDC sockets. NAD touted this as future proofing but has not really done any and there is no sign that it will do. Otherwise a very entertaining video as always. Looking forward to the next one.
