- We invited Xyla Foxlin to Narwhal Labs to use our makerspace to make a project! Xyla is an Ohio based Aviatrix, and chose to make an epoxy inlaid stained glass panel of the "Spirit of Columbus". The Spirit of Columbus is a Cessna 180 piloted by Geraldine Fredritz Mock - the first woman to circumnavigate the world during a series of solo flights over the course of 29 days in 1964. The Spirit of Columbus can now be found on display at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, VA.

I love, Xyla! She is so smart, funny and pretty. Completely AWESOME!
And so easy to buy presents for. Clamps for Xmas, clamps for birthdays, clamps for just surprises...
Very cool video, thanks Xyla!
Great project and nifty history lesson. Thank you for covering the clear pour to ensure all the divided areas stay separate. I would have definitely tried to go straight to color and made a fugly mess.
I do have both. Already cut out two small designs from acrylic. I prefer that over wood. Now just find the rest of my resin
This was such a beautiful piece, but more importantly, I liked what it represented and what it meant to Ms. Foxlin. It's always a pleasure to learn from her.
Super cool project and up beat. I like where this is going and look forward to more videos.
Ms. Foxlin, I saw your Ted Talks. I wanted to tell you how much I admire you.
Awesome work Xyla! 😃👍🏻🛩️👊🏻
Absolutely incredible!!! My favorite is how the black from the char against the white made it look like marble almost. Loved it!!!
great job and great fun to hang out and make cool stuff with Xyla and the Narwhal Team!
Awesome! Like the tip for the UV resistance
I see a new direction for future Xyla - another RUclips star is born! Fun video, nice job.
You always get me with that mixing face. XD it's truly your signature thing. That aside, this show is so refreshing and educational. Keep doing what you do. :)
That's just beautiful!
That's freaking awesome. Great job.
This is pretty darned cool! Now if I only had time for all the ideas constantly running in my head.
very beautifully done, with a small amount of entertaining wackiness!
Beautiful work.
Wow I never new ! Beautiful ♥️
Excellent project!
My Dad taught me about holding a bottle sort of backward to pour cleaner than the other way. I didn’t know why it was done this way! Thanks for the explanation as to why!!
A really neat project and a great history lesson!
Ugh I Love stained glass..beautiful colors
*GREAT WORK, XYLA!*
Nice work bless
That turned out really nice.
What a cool project!
Hey! I'm an actual stained glass artist and contractor here in pennsylvania! I would love to come down and make a real leaded stained glass panel for your channel some time!
That looks super neat. I am surprised at how good the epoxy looks. Now all I need is a laser cutter...
You could always cut it out on a scroll saw!
@@NarwhalLabs Now all I need is a scroll saw...
Awesome!
Very cool!
Beautiful project!
Painting the frame may add little touch to a great project.
That looks really nice great job. You have a nice collection of clamps.
No mater how many clamps you have you always need just one more.
Wow, it came out looking pretty damn awesome!
Great editing!
This girl's energy is infectious!😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
I didn't know that about Geraldine Mock. I always admire anyone who lives a adventurous life
That is a rather cool way to do a stained glass look. I think I would of added just a hint of blue / grey for the windscreen, just for a little contrast.
Looks great, the background colors are nice. Your announcement guy is pretty good.
Thanks Dave!
Yet another good build. You really like epoxy.
There are so many things that you can do to modify them. You are just started. Keep it up. You are entertaining.
That pouring trick is a game changerrr
very cool.....thank you
Great project, with attention to detail. Should you do another one like this, you can get solvent-proof polypropylene pipettes from lab supply companies. These could possibly make the filling of the fine spots easier than pouring. They allow dispensing of fine volumes much more smoothly than syringes as well.
I noticed that your "I love Mixing Face" looks very similar to the "Deer in the Headlights" face. LOLOL I love your sense of humor. Nice project. You need to make the the Beatles Yellow Submarine next.
Beautiful ❤️🥰
Great video. I subscribed and clicked the bell. I want to watch what other interesting projects you come up with. Thank you for sharing XXX
thanks Xyla
Sweet clamp collection back there, on the French cleat wall, back there
Love the Derek cameo!
24 Houahs Latah!
Pretty good overall, white colour I thought could be a bit more opaque to make it look nicer.
Saw some bubbles in the finished window so not sure when they got introduced.
Another channel suggested using a heat gun to force the bubbles out of the epoxy before it dries.
"what would you make with access to lasers?"
DEATHSTARS
that was the first thing that popped into my head.
A sharpener for my knives
Have you ever used one of those stirring machines, the 3D printed ones on Etsy work quite well for small quantities (not the vertical ones, but the slanted ones) but for slightly larger batches and for folks without budget concerns, a planetary centrifugal dental alginate mixer is a dream come true, they mix extremely thoroughly and don’t create any bubbles.
Cool! Thanks for the suggestions. We haven't used either, but we'll check them out.
What was the wood you used? Killer video! THANKS!
amazing
The actual airplane is at the Udvar-Hazy Center. It is the other Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. I think it is actually better than the museum on the Mall. Incredible place and I was lucky enough to go to a Christmas party there.
Yooooo. From mansfield ohio! I actually knew about this. You went super nerd and I love it! Here for it
This is so Dope and awesome. are there any other finishers that could be used?
First time watching. Soo jealous..btw.. but funny cute hilarious..informative. that was such a great idea.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Fun piece , stirring like sanding are part of the necessary evils of being a maker. I think Smaug in his golden chamber would be interesting. In some stained glass you paint in details. What paints would not be affected by the second pour?
Very impressive, also creative. I'm tempted to have a go at the bell x-1.
Hi Xyla - I haven't seen anyone else think to use Halcyon for UV protection and I think it's a brilliant idea. I have been doing some resin design on new windows that will be installed when I'm finished. The resin side will be on the inside. I'd like to protect it from yellowing. Does it make sense to use the Halcyon on the glass side that will actually be on the outside and the part that the sun hits first?
Hi, might want to look into a sand blaster. Put your laser cut oil stained and burnt tems in remove clean crisp laser cut items....works like a charm and no more mess!
Thanks for the tip!
@@NarwhalLabs You're gonna be so happy. Harbor freight $110 with an extension hose, I can do larger items in a makeshift painters plastic booth.
That was awesome, did you cover/varnish both sides?
We did! Thanks!
You should try real stained glass or actually lead light! It's pretty easy and fun
Just wanted to say, I absolutely love your videos!
Cool project, thanks for sharing! I am wondering though, why you didn't apply the Halcyon on both sides? Or will it absolutely block the UV rays and prevent them from penetrating the unprotected resin? I'm thinking reflection and heat could still cause yellowing if both sides aren't covered, but I am not a UV ray expert...just wondering. 😋
Halcyon was applied to the back off-camera :)
Great project! Please do where safety glasses and gloves when handling epoxy.
Thanks! Narwhal Labs is a venture of TotalBoat - we're VERY aware of epoxy use and safety. Xyla wore gloves through the project, and safety glasses are particularly important when doing large pours with very low viscosity epoxies where splashing is a risk. Safety is your own responsibility and we trust you'll make the safety decisions that are right for you.
Wicked!!!
Xyla, that's amazing, a great project to remember a significant aviation event
Very nice. I'm wondering how much it would cost for all the materials for this project.
Did you varnish the back (clear side) too?
Th frame border magically increased at the 5:00 mark… Hmmmm…
Great project as always though Xyla!
Good catch!! You are correct, I wonder what happened there, did her initial clear pour fail? There is a reason why a whole new wood pattern was made, conveniently left out.
I've got nothing to do with stained glass, so no clue why this video showed up, but it was interesting. :) I had only one question: Don't you have to protect both sides with halcyon??? I would do that, because it's really frusrtrating, when your artpiece's colors disappear over time, due to sunshine :/
The back side was varnished off camera! Thanks for watching.
Did you varnish the back side off-screen? You said it would be in a window, seems like the back will see UV too.
We did!
The eagle! hahaha
Super
_"I love mixing face"_
😊😊😊😊😊
Look at all those clamps!
#clampchamp
That is nice. My grandmother flys a plane just like that. If you had a picture of it could you make one for sale? We live in vt also she flys out of btv airport.
nice job i would do the st.of maine hi from maine
Do you have to use epoxy to seal the wood or can you just use wood sealer? Wood sealer in a spray can would be much faster. I would also stain the wood before sealing it to give it the look of the lead solder typically used in stained glass.
Wood sealer or spray varnish Dona great job sealing the wood grain itself, but air can still escape and leave behind bubbles in your final epoxy pours. Sealing with epoxy resin is a sure fire way to completely seal it.
Thank you for this video. mmm not everyone has access to a laser-cutter. You did do a very good job.
Thanks! Nothing wrong with cutting it out on a scroll saw!
Interesting
I would want to make a ZPM lamp light from Stargate if I have tools and skill like you :D
Man, check out that wall of clamps and batteries and chargers!
what kind of wood and thickness did you use?
6mm Baltic Birch plywood, thanks for watching!
You can experiment with thinning the epoxy with a small quantity of acetone. Makes it easier to paint. There are thousands of types of epoxy so just experiment in small quantities of what you have
YAY! maker tips and instuctions. Learned a butt ton in just the first 4 mins about epoxy. Lol Narwhale labs trolling Xyla. Also, poly pro.. what tape?! (is this the generic term for duct tape? :D
Glad you enjoyed. The tape we used is like tuck tape. The big sheet of white plastic is polypropylene, you can get it from plastic suppliers. It's kinda pricey but epoxy doesn't stick to it at all.
You can call your mixing segments Halo Halo it’s a Filipino Desert Which means mix mix.
Super 👍 🇦🇹
Actually to pour from the opposite end of the big container is about not having the glug glug because of the air flow
Shouldn't you have uv lacquered it on both sides?
She has her own YT channel now
And now you got a plane exectlly like this
I need to find a laser cutting for hire. Would you varnish both sides?
OK, Xyla - which is worse: mixing time or sanding time?
Excellent video and project. It would be cool if you could do a collaboration with Amy Shira Teitel given you both share an interest in aviation and in particular the important role of female aviators. Really enjoy your other channel as well. Thanks!
Cute and talented
I would make beautiful butterflies and hummingbirds and flowers
That's a pretty thick Boston accent on the guy that did the time lapse cuts
