It satirizes Ronald Reagan and Wild West fiction. "Whip it into shape" is an intentionally meaningless and cliche phrase that doesn't offer a solution to anything. The passive woman being whipped is an imaginary issue being "whipped" by Reagan.

“Whip it”...about Skating?....lol. Devo wrote this song as a “motivational pep song” for Jimmy Carter to win the presidential race against Reagan. But because the lyrics are so goofy, people can make it about whatever they want, which usually is masturbating or sadomasochism.
@@Boogieplex Not to confuse you, the "This refers to" part of my comment referred to the previous statement and not the song itself. This song was used for speed skating because it was so fast tempo.
I am so glad I saw them live in Stockholm 1990. They started the show by showing this with an analog projector. One of the best conserts I have ever seen. At the last song, the singer only had underpants, which was full of cigarettes. A great band!
The first time I ever heard this song back in 1980 I was like, "Wha????" But before long I realized that this was actually brilliant. With the hindsight of 44 years, I believe that it proved to be a very apt introduction to a decade gave us some amazing music.
sharon 1661, By "the technology we have today" you mean those shitty computer animations that we see in ever big bloated-budgeted movie "blockbuster" coming out of Hollywood today right? . .. I watched last American virgin today for the first time, I wasn't expecting much, but I loved it, and the soundtrack is great throughout , every single song matched the scene.
If DEVO weren't so damn cool and the RNR HoF so fuckin' lame, I'd be far more inclined to push for their inclusion. But DEVO were too rad in '78 and still are to the present. Maybe some bands are better off remaining outsiders...

Great group I remember in1980was14, im53 now still love this group.
@@lisaparsons2544 my friends tease me for listening to this and other 80s song
@@diamondmax5141 some just don't know good music, even the singer, Kurt liked this group.
This was the ultimate speed skating song. This refers to roller skating that was so popular in the late '70s and early '80s.
It referring to whipping something else into shape lol
It’s making a comeback
“Whip it”...about Skating?....lol.
Devo wrote this song as a “motivational pep song” for Jimmy Carter to win the presidential race against Reagan. But because the lyrics are so goofy, people can make it about whatever they want, which usually is masturbating or sadomasochism.
@@Boogieplex Not to confuse you, the "This refers to" part of my comment referred to the previous statement and not the song itself. This song was used for speed skating because it was so fast tempo.
lol That's precious.
The most iconic, perversely brilliant music video ever made. Long live those boys Devo.
Agree!
Back when bizarre creativity was channeled into the analog arts...
BRILLIANT
This video instilled a love of S&M kink in me at 7 years old.😅
DEVO RULES
AND DEVO HAS RULES
DUTY NOW FOR THE FUTURE 😊
I am so glad I saw them live in Stockholm 1990. They started the show by showing this with an analog projector. One of the best conserts I have ever seen. At the last song, the singer only had underpants, which was full of cigarettes. A great band!
The 80s are forever.
Nah, only for 10 years each century.
Devo were true new wave pioneers, they set the tone for so much music.
Happy "Whip It" day, fellow Spuds!
Remember when video recommendations didn't cover the screen for the last few seconds? Those were the days...
I really miss THOSE days! It ruins the end of most videos, why must they do that?
@@bigdaddydiesel5520You can block it on PC, at least.
I’m so glad to have lived throughout the 80’s. Great decade when we had these classics.
I agree 💯%
2005. Power of the memes
in the 1970's DEVO was a pioneer of American punk rock! By 1980, they morphed into New Wave and were a pioneer of the New Wave! Amazing band!
The first time I ever heard this song back in 1980 I was like, "Wha????" But before long I realized that this was actually brilliant. With the hindsight of 44 years, I believe that it proved to be a very apt introduction to a decade gave us some amazing music.
43 YEARS AND IS A CLASSIC FOR SURE , SOUNDS GREAT/FRESH/INNOVATIVE.
the 80s were a magical time that can never be recreated.

Crack that WHIP!!!
sharon 1661, By "the technology we have today" you mean those shitty computer animations that we see in ever big bloated-budgeted movie "blockbuster" coming out of Hollywood today right? . .. Fuck THAT! The only movie in which THAT impressed me was Terminator 2 - with that liquid metal cyborg. THAT was the ONLY time it ever really wowed me over. After THAT I got sick of it real fast!
Ian Findly and it came out in the 90s too😂
Being a millennial, I would've loved to live as a teen back then
Ahhhhhh. The 80's. They'll never have a decade of music like that ever again
Never again....sad
I'm ok with that, I would've skipped th 80s and went straight to the 90s if I had had that option.
You just have to search farther.
You Can't Front On That
Nowadays generation hardly has someone who gets our music from the 80ies
this song is a meadow of gems 💎💎💎
I absolutely love this. Videos today r boring, this is far from boring. . I miss the 80s.
No one will ever think this is normal; we will watch it forever.
Love this group and the "Whip It" song, reminds me of my youth! Can hardly believe it's been 43 years...
I watched last American virgin today for the first time, I wasn't expecting much, but I loved it, and the soundtrack is great throughout , every single song matched the scene.
I love the 80s. When the music videos, didn't make sense. This song was awesome, and the videos was hilarious.😂
Devo was probably the most misunderstood band in history
You, obviously, have never heard of Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band
At least our favorite Slavic funnyman Weird Al Yankovic loves them
Isn't: Weird Al Yankovic Jewish ?
This is the true true

Good News 👍
DEVO has now over 100000 Votes for the class of 2021 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Vote DEVO in !!!
Thanks
If DEVO weren't so damn cool and the RNR HoF so fuckin' lame, I'd be far more inclined to push for their inclusion. But DEVO were too rad in '78 and still are to the present. Maybe some bands are better off remaining outsiders...

Hi I want to recommend a song called 'LifeChanges' By Robert Nix
Children, this is what life was like in the 1980's.
0:24 This ultrasmooth head movement was foundational to my character
Yeah, the 80’s were pretty fun! Saw a a lot of these bands live! Unfortunately I was high or drunk or both most of the time! Glad I’m clean and sober now!
Me too , we survived the 80's and lived to tell the tales.
Devi was genius AF! The 80’s was the absolute best time growing up! Simple times, excellent music, no tech & rad AF! 🫡
There was something weird and amazing about be a teenager in the 80's. I'm glad that was my time
They were so adorably old at Cruel World fest this past weekend. Their set was perfect though and probably my favorite from the whole festival
Devo are the true pre-internet meme-masters.
+sndrgrd: Add Shephard Fairey to the list, since he created the "Andre the Giant Has a Posse" meme back in 1989.
Well part of it. Richard Dawkins coined the phrase "meme" back in the late 1970s. But hey this song and video was made in 1980, so they just improved it.
devo are church of the subgenius, that's the pre internet meme master: bob dobbs. you also want negativland, and i'm pretty sure dawkins was late 80s on that since lynn margulis was all excited about it in 1990. but this is only a hint of cultures you dont see.
Just saw these guys live in Melbourne. Great Fun. Didn’t see any other band on the lineup with costumes changes.
This song is too good. Nothing about it makes sense, but it’s just excellent.
Agreed! You have to be genius to pull that off hahaha
NO Question
When a problem comes along you must whip it. How does that not make sense?
This video covers all the basics
My dad showed me this as one of his favorite songs as a kid, that made it my favorite song as a kid, I’m almost 17 now and still replaying
Congrats on being inducted into the Rock -N- Roll Hall Of Fame!!!
They were only nominated unfortunately.
HOW ABOUT ABC?
'Step on a crack, break your mama`s back'. I LOVE it!
1980 WAS ANOTHER HOT YEAR FOR MUSIC OF ALL KINDS.
R.I.P. Alan and Bob, thanks for all the years of entertainment
Lo mejor de las bandas de los 80 es que sonaban auténticas, usaban medios menos "sofisticados": y sonaban mejor que muchas de hoy en día. Aquello era ARTE.
Well said! I agree totally
Amén hermano, es verdad lo que dices.
Du rock 🎸pur et dur de la décennie 1980 !!!
This is life forward momentum to guys like me in their 60s lol I Love It!!
