  • I have been asked too many times 'What Is Micromobility?' In this video I attempt to come up with a concise answer to that question.

"In 2019, we updated the spec to 1000 kg. Easiest framework to understand it is, anything smaller than a car." - James Gross, Micromobility.io

Thanks for mentioning roller skates! They often get overlooked as toys instead of transportation.

I hold reservations and differ with the idea of including vehicles weighing less than 1000KG or 500KG within the ambit of micro-mobility. This concept strikes me as counterintuitive and raises questions about the precise meaning of "Mini-Mobility."
From my standpoint, I firmly believe that micro-mobility should pertain exclusively to personal vehicles of genuinely compact dimensions, designed for effortless lifting and placement within small spaces. This criterion is in line with the fundamental essence of being "micro." In contrast, labeling vehicles with weights of 1000KG or 500KG as micro seems incongruous and runs counter to the core definition. Such vehicles may perhaps belong to the "Mini-Mobility" category. Nevertheless, my perspective remains unswerving - the term "micro" should distinctly embody its authentic meaning of compactness and easy portability.
My standpoint is pertinent and mirrors the core principle of micro-mobility, which revolves around compact, lightweight vehicles that offer convenience for personal use. The distinction, emphasizing the easy portability of genuinely micro vehicles, is crucial - they should ideally be liftable and stowable. The differentiation between micro and mini-mobility underscores the necessity for precise definitions and categories that accurately reflect the size and portability of these vehicles.

Thanks for the message. I agree and I believe the nomenclature will of course change as time goes on.
Not sure if I mentioned in the video, but I once heard it said that Micro mobility is personal mobility, using the smallest possible vehicle necessary. Or something to that effect.
      I personally wouldn't classify a 500KG+ vehicle as micro.

I fully agree with your sentiment. I wrote my comment before reading yours but we’re on the same page. In crowded areas, I don’t want micro cars clogging up the multi use path, but in the suburbs, perhaps. While specific definitions could be helpful, I think recognizing where localization of rules is further helpful is important, as I’ve described above. I even dislike allowing e-bikes that don’t need to be pedaled on our limited paths designed for use by human-powered or speed-limited devices as behavior is inconsistent with the design & limitations of the slower devices.

I think of it as a means to access areas that are too far to walk (>15 minutes) but too close for infrequent transit to be efficient. Typically going from one end of a neighborhood to the other, to the next neighborhood or maybe 2 away.
I think including items that can’t be easily transported via transit should be allowed by statute, not by concept: micro cars using heavily used bike/mixed use paths should be an exception, not a rule, thus better to be controlled by rules per area.

Idiotic madness if 500kg is travelling at 45km/h!

If micromobility refers to vehicles up to 500kg, we need another category for vehicles up to, say, 50kg. Why? It seems to make no sense to put a 15kg bicycle and a 500kg car in the very same category of transportation just because they are both not "typical cars".

500 kilograms seems a bit high to be micro, I wouldn't classify anything you can't hoist onto your shoulder and climb down the stairs into the subway with to be micro.

True and it will evolve. But consider some people will NEED something like a micro car. Not too uncommon in the Netherlands for example.
Though that doesn't mean the definitions can't be changed.
I like the idea that Micromobility is basically the most efficient device you can ride for your needs.

@@nicthedoorthis is where localization of rules is appropriate. By allowing a so-called microcar into the category & allowing the category to be specified, in densely active to crowded places, they can interfere more than assist in the effort. Streets should be comfortable for microcar/minicars in high use areas with permission in areas of lesser use. This is a concept that gets little attention & thus not appreciated in its application potential.

It just seems to me like a lot of these things are more just high tech toys for lazy hipsters to fix a problem that didn't exist in the first place! We've had nearly contemporarily bicycles throughout the entire 20th Century, but somehow that's not good enough now? Why? Not hip enough for the woke grunge crowd? Too much effort for the lazy, unshaved bun boys? I've seen some really funny fatties riding the e-scooters and that's a reflection of the slob factor in all of this. For me it's an awful lot like "needing" cell phones when there was always the ubiquitous coin pay phones and therefore no need. Now we've created more problems in making people addicts where they can't pull their little heads out of the things to breath, live, and in particular drive correctly or ride a bike at all. Which brings me to the other consequence. That is everyone becoming a softy both in school and later. The kids are couch potato mobile phone addicts, and they stay that way forever. Then they pass that on.
