Japan's Streets are Better...
The land of the rising sun is know for many things. Mount Fuji, Samurai, Anime, Sushi and wacky game shows. But what it isn't widely known for is its incredibly safe streets. Not just for drivers, but for people on bikes or just simply walking. I hope I can convey the simple safety of Japanese streets and the importance of incorporating their essence into our own streets here in North America.

What Happened to Bicycle License Plates?

I regularly see calls for cyclists to get registered and licensed. But the truth is, that is actually an antiquated idea that has been abolished long ago. Lived in montreal they just make the street a one way
Pedestrian signals are usually on major arteries & the side streets that face them have 🛑 Stop Signs!!! If there's a stop sign on any approach to the signalled crossing, then you must stop before proceeding, even though the light may be red & you have the right of way with the pedestrians.
Reported
It can also mean that opposing traffic is facing a stop sign not a stop light and can drive right in front of you if they think they have a hole big enough to make it to the other side.
as someone who lives on Vancouver Island in B.C. ive never seen this before.. or just never noticed
No one cares
Rolls eyes
To me its funny how when the cyclists leave downtown they want to drive on the roads but not follow any fucking rules, blowing through stop signs and red lights. In vancouver cyclicts are the worst on par with vermin
Haha your lucky ypu have your own lane making traffic worse in vancouver now you want the car lights to work around you also?
You mentioned the cost of Citi-biking a few times, but that's the "tourist rate".... I pay ~$200 per year for a membership and get free regular bikes or ~$4 ebikes (depending on the distance)
you bikes never pay attention anyways take the lanes out
Lived here forever and never knew this (but also don't drive)
we get these people in alberta. i will be 10 feet away from the road with my body turned around and they'll still be waiting there. then when i go wtf?! they've given me the finger. this has happened twice...
I still don't know how it works.
Terrible! But I do wonder how we survived for a hundred years without bike lanes.
When I was young riding my bike my parents always said stay on the SIDEWALKS .. now bikes are all over the roads
Not to mention that Heather Street leads up to a Highschool, and an Elementary school. So don't be surprised that there will be a lot of cars going to and from to drop off/pick up kids. It's not as simple as that. Bike route does not equate to bike lane... definitely a shared space considering. In this scenario, it's almost better to be on Cambie Street as it is wider.
Figures this channel is run by a cyclist now all makes sense😂😂😂
Nice
Ontario doesn’t have advance arrows?? Just flashing lights? I’m glad I saw this before ever driving there lmao
I drove to BC from California last year. This was confusing to me & hesitated making left turns.
I refuse to go when people break the rules of the road to let me go like that. Your enabeling bad driving habbits.
How many drivers actually stop as opposed to doing a California roll....
The lack of police presence has emboldened drivers to act with impunity
today i learned not everyone else does this lmao
Incorrect info. It means that it will constantly be green unless a pedestrian pushes the button. Side streets are controled by stop signs.
Why would that information be relevant to motorists? It’s kinda silly
As someone who’s lived in BC my whole life, I didn’t actually know this 😂
So whats the point? Does it make a difference if it was solid?
Better fix would be to remove the bike routes and bring the cars back in
Wow, what a bad idea.
I love the fact that you can own a good ebike, a good regular bike, a decent cargo bike, and a good electric scooter for less money than a shitty car
You are clearly in the wrong here
No Granville island will never be car free you were clearly in the way i have been there before bikers aren’t supposed to be on that road there is an entire path dedicated to bikes. This is why no one likes cyclists because they ask for paths dedicated to them AND THEN THEY IGNORE THEM LIKE WHY DID U WANT THE PATH FOR BIKES IF U WERNT GONNA USE IT. Cyclists are the worst
"And all it takes is one press of a button to turn it red." That sounds like a threat
*Doesn’t everyone know this? And if they don’t then HOW DID THEY PASS THEIR DRIVERS LICENSE TEST????*
Some people aren't from there Einstein. "IF you've ever been to British Colombia"
+ I actually ride my bike on Heather from Marpole to Broadway. That particular section where this video was filmed has a High School on one the North side of 57th and an Elementary School on the South side of 57th and those vehicles are parents either picking up or dropping off their teenagers and/or children. Heather, outside of 8:30--09:30 and 2:30-3:00 is actually quite pleasant! I just try to avoid the area when school is starting or ending. The video is somewhat misleading!
I still have no idea what to do with these even after watching this.
downtown vancouver should ban the cars
This is a rainy, hilly city. Bicycles are a niche for the urban rich and the desparate poor. We’ve pissed away hundreds of millions of dollars on bike lanes that go (rightfully) unused in the predominately cold, wet, dark weather. Perfect example of giving an inch and they’ll take a mile.
*Hello sir, i am intrested in that red house*
would love to see your thoughts on Portland
Don't be Nice. Be Predictable.
Put concrete posts in either end of road.
I don't know might have something to do with on street parking down a two-lane road with no spacing and then shoving a "bike"? laying in there.
This drives me nuts as a bicyclist in Austin. There is a spot I ride through every day where a dedicated bike lane crosses under the interstate but across the two-lane access road on either side. Cars in a 45 mile an hour zone will come to a stop while I'm waiting to cross, but they fail to recognize that a)I don't know what they are actually doing and b) cars in the other lane don't know what they are doing and are not slowing or stopping. It just creates confusion and makes everyone, most of all me, less safe. Often too, it allows a safe gap behind them through which I could have safely crossed to close up, and then I'm waiting even longer for a safe opportunity to cross. Just follow the law, if you have the right of way take it when I'm obviously at a full stop waiting. It's bad enough dealing with motorists who don't yield when required, I don't want to also navigate people unpredictably slowing or stopping when it's not.
Fuck bike lanes in BC ……………
Im from BC and my driving school did not say that's what they were, it means it won't be going yellow soon, so u caj accelerate through intersection, solid green means it's prone to go yellow and you need to cover your brake through the intersection
LOL... always complaining. Cars emit pollution. The quicker the cars are through the city, the cleaner the air... for bicyclists. If the lights were not matched / no green wave. It would be even worse for bike riders.
Can you cover the topic of e-bikes with higher speed limits and licensing for those, like s-pedelec e-bikes abroad? My e-bike is speed unlocked and I'm technically not allowed to do that, but it's extremely important for me that I don't have the 32 km/h limit because it doesn't make sense for where I am in a rural place. I would like it if it was more accessible for other people to not have a speed limit on their e-bike.
I think Vancouver has a pretty good cycling infrastructure. You're expecting too much. Vancouverites prefer driving. This is not Europe
