0:37 starting update.
2:24 update complete first go successful... second time in a row it hasn’t said unable to update please try again.... but update says no update needed. Arc ,gen 3 sub, 2 x era 300's and 1 x one sl.
I feel like the system has gotten quieter (which some people on Reddit noticed). Bass is less pronounced and treble is more pronounced. Surround seems more pronounced too...
Want to love Sonos, but I’m done. Selling all my Sonos kit. Too frustrating every time it loses the connection. 🤬🤬🤬
Ouch. This is one update NOBODY should proceed with!
You must be lucky Pete. I spent time on the phone with Sonos support because my 20 Sonos products were a nightmare! I had to resort to turning most devices off and using a combination of turning one on at a time for the update and using a long network cable directly connected to some devices from the router. Even then in some cases it took multiple updates. I lost a few hours of my life faffing with this update.
What you need to know is that Sonos support is aware of an avalanche of complaints about this firmware update and support believes there will be more bug fix updates in the near future.
BTW I have a mixture of old Play One, Play5 and newer Era and Arc/beam products in the UK and none of them worked properly. Perhaps it’s a problem only affecting certain regions. Support has no answer at this time… 🤷♂️
…and now I’ve gone to use my Sonos today and it’s broken all over the place, connecting, disconnecting, groups not working.
16.1 is a joke and only upgrade knowing it’s risky, doesn’t give you any new features of benefit and may in fact break your Sonos solution 😤
If I don't perform the Update...I notice my Roams get very glitchy. More than usual. That's my clue that an Update has been released. I feel your pain because I was at the same point of doing what you mentioned...next step was hurling everything over the fence & into the woods. Pad included.
@@jazzpunk Based on my naff experience of this update I suggest…
Turn off power to all the other devices that don’t benefit from 16.1. Just try to update the Roam or whatever devices you want to attempt and fingers crossed it works for them. Leave the other devices on 16.0 until Sonos releases a further update. The Sonos support engineer suggested this next update will be interim bug fixes to stop the problems 16.1 is causing a large enough customer base to warn people off the 16.1 update.
Ouch
That sucks. I am thinking about how to set up a community page where people can share their experience. Maybe let me set up a poll first.
The famous words "Good to go" thanks Peter!
Still get that silly bug about update failed despite It actually updating. Sonos are aware of this I believe, surprised they still haven't fixed it, been happening for the last 4-5 Sonos updates.
It knocked a bunch of devices out of my system. I spent a half hour going around unplugging stuff to get it to reconnect
It has affected me for the past 2 years. I have not known how it feels like to update successfully anymore.
@@PeterPee Possibly the same length of time then for me, time fly's by.
I'm SO DAMN TIRED of Sonos - it's unbelivable! I've had it and I'm going to switch the system ASAP (I have the ARC, Sub, 2x Ones). I've spent a fortune on these "premium" products. Every time they want to put out these "updates" they mess with something that is working already and always F it up!!! The engineers & company act like reckless monkeys with ADHD and never test their updates thoroughly before launching it to everyone. How about forcing every employee to test the update on their own systems 1 week before actually launching it to the customers? This is not the first time they F us over... Remember the update that destroyed the sub and they didn't fix for MONTHS? These people NEVER learn and don't care about customer service!!!
It's a big NO from me Peter..... Why did they release such an update is beyond me.....well done Peter for an in depth
Anyone else noticing significant difference in Dolby atmos performance since the update 16.1/16.1.1? Before the updates I had amazing sound isolation and sound placement, now everything seems less located at a certain point. I watched gravity (Dolby) and im westen nichts neues on netflix. Before I was so satisfied with the sound but now I can’t follow the objects and sounds moving around me… so disappointing. Also did the Dolby demos on my Xbox. Before I could clearly hear the ball moving behind my head, now not anymore. I didn’t change the location of my speakers. Did true play again but doesn’t change. Before I used to switch off true play and even than it was just amazing. Sonos engineers really give me a headache.
Hi Peter I have the Sonos Arc and Sub connected to a Samsung Tv QN85 and I’m having cutting out issues lately… any help would be much appreciated 🙏🙏🙏 love your Channel
Saldy I've downloaded this on my ipad......aaaahhhh no no no for me bring s2 back
Hello all, im looking for this Dolby Atmos Demo file which Peter is using. Where can i find it? Thanks.
This is for me, the first update that does not work. My One SL is disconnected and the app struggles updating.
Mine is set to automatically update overnight it is saying it’s 16.1 and no update is needed does that mean everything has gone smoothly? Sub and bass seem a lot quieter since update
The update unpaired all my speakers so I had to reset each speaker and then it didn’t work and had to do it again. Took over an hour
This update didn’t complete and also knocked out my sub gen 3. I had to completely add it again to the system. Others have also reported this.
I had exactly the same issue. Thankfully easy to fix but definately a point that needs highlighting
Gonna start a poll to have people warned.
Had the same problem as the above people.
I couldn’t control individual volumes on my speakers and had a warning from Sonos that my system, needed to be updated.
Why don’t they test it at their headquarters with a few setups and realize these issues, before releasing the update and waiting for us to complain?
It’s just common sense!
Not smart on their part!
My era 300s started popping. Anyone else getting this?
Hey Peter - have you updated to 16.1.1 yet? Believe it came out today.
The recent updates always display “update problem” for me but the update has never actually failed. Just like you mentioned, when I click try again, it always says system up to date. Annoying but not the end of the world.
Thanks Peter! I always check your posts before updating.
My pleasure!
This video can be done in less than a min if you take out the bloat
Will Sonos headphones have the capability to listen to a movie that you're either streaming or playing on physical media.
I would expect so but it might require that you have a Sonos soundbar or the upcoming Sonos stream box
I would really think they need to implement that! Bose has a solution for that already and it works like a charm.
@@PeterPee Fingers crossed. That way, I can stop volume managing movies at night. I have the settings as per your recommendations, I never use night mode, though..... would there be any logic in utilising the sub in conjunction with headphones for that bass feeling, or is the sub redundant when using headphones??
Does it fix the surrounds , I noticed in the last update my surrounds are very loud vs how they were on the previous versions . I had to turned them down . I have eras 300 as my surround
Feels like my bass has gone quieter and atmos works better. I only have the arc and gen 3
I have another system with the Beam 1 without sub and just surrounds. Bass seems unaffected. But that system is not Atmos capable.
Mine updated smoothly 😅
Thanks Peter! Always appreciate your efforts to keep us in the know on these system updates, and impressed by the work you put into them.
Love your channel. How you immediately put the summary up front and let us decide if we want to watch the whole video or not.
Thanks for the heads up Peter!

Amazing video Peter, in my case it failed on the first try, but when I exited the app and re-entered, it already told me that it didn't need updating. What I have noticed is more clarity in the voices, but my Sub Gen 3 seems to not achieve deep bass. Before, I felt my room vibrating, now I don't. I've calibrated with Trueplay around 9 times (Sonos Arc, Sub Gen 3, and dual era 300 as surrounds) and it's still the same. Is there any way to force deeper bass? Thank you.
Updates usually take me one try, with auto-fail, then RE-TRY says "no update needed".
16.1 took me three tries across two days before finally "working" after the last complete+auto-fail.
Arc + ERA300's + Sub3 x 2
My Beam Gen1 cannot update (error code 30) , others were successfully, including 1x Sub mini, 2x One . Beam still at 16.0 and is not able to pair to other Sonos 😢 tried many times , frustrating…
Pair of Era100s and a submini, updated smooth as silk. My only complaint is the ongoing inaccuracy of Alexa on the Eras…I had to plug in my Dot again which I did not expect.
I Updated the Alexa App two weeks ago. Since then the Era 100s works perfectly Fine. On the Same Level as my Echo dot in another room.
@@jingiskahn3466 thanks for the advice, I’ve re-enabled Alexa, and it does appear to be behaving itself…..will monitor over the next few days. Thanks again👍
What I noticed with 2 stereo paired 5 's after the update is that I m half way up the volume bar now to get something satisfactory out... As one reddit user noted, "It seems all speakers got quieter with this update" and the quality of the music feels downgraded... Any thoughts about this? I am wondering if there is any way to roll back the update?
16.1 update ran smoothly for me... Setup: Arc + 2xSub Gen 3 + 2xEra 300
This was the first time I was able to update without errors, and it is the first time I updated after adding a pair of One SL to my Beam Gen2 and Sub Gen 3. All have 16.1, and it was done very quickly.
3:39 My 16.1 update failed first time I tried with only Arc showing connection. I simply reset the S2 app and everything connected just fine, Sub gen 3 and two One SL’s and of course the Arc which was already connected.
Thanks Peter, I love my arc, era 300’s and dual subs (gen 3) were worth it for me! With dual subs the bass doesn’t originate from one area of the room, it is more universal. I appreciate your channel and videos.
16.1 updated successfully first try. The last 2 or 3 updates have taken a couple of attempts to finish.
Thank you, Peter - It’s a pleasure you always give a go or no go in the start of your videos! 👍🏻
However, I always seem to stick around after the intro anyways. 😀
Hi Peter! Hope all is well! Is a refurbished ARC SL still a good buy?
Hello Peter! I stay watching longer because you make it so that I don't have to! Please don't ever change your format. Thank you for all the efforts you put into your SOnos channel.
I’m 3rd or maybe 2nd I guess lol anyways love your videos Peter keep up the great work!
Thank Peter, again! You think it’s wise for me to update to those cables? Ever since I had the Sonos, I have problems with losing sound on the LG C2 when tv tv is switching from Dolby atmos to Stereo sound. This doesn’t always happen, only occasionally. I have the Sonos connected by two short cables which I made longer by connecting them with a small connecter. You think that’s the problem for me?
Sounds like you’re gonna have to try a single cable without a join. It’s the only logical thing to do and most likely the cause of the issue 🤷♂️
Always use HDMI 2 meters cables and never short ones
tx for your reply! Im going to try it.@@djt6546
I support djt6546's answer. connectors are usually iffy in quality.
@PeterPee @djt6546 so I bought certified urgreen cables as you guys suggested. I re-ran tv setup in the app. Unfortunately the issue still exists. It seems that there is an issue between switching from Dolby atmos to stereo.. switching ps5 to internal app like RUclips seems the trigger the problem the most often. Xbox does it occasionally. All setting on tv are correct. Simplink + earc + passthrough on.
Center channel slider! Returned sonos vocals are low
My sub mini always seem to take ages to connect to my system
After 16.1, sonos voice control stop working, so I delete, and restart voice control configuration, and its ok now. Also, I see, update failed first time. I restart, and update completed successfully.
Sonos needs to improve the update process man.
Update failed on me then after 2-3 tries it finished
I’ve been having reconnect issues but this might be due to doing power off cycles based on Samsung cec, eARC issues I’ve been having 🤣
The CEC controls does not power off the Sonos.
Big failure only updated arc now states no update available. No working to reconnect left and right surround including sub. This sucks!
I wonder if it goes away after a while.
This update caused some of my speakers to unlink. My Arc+Sub kept disconnecting from my Amp surrounds until I did a hard reset.
Sometimes you give it an hour and it all comes back.
I had to retry twice before it said completed. (ARC + Sub + 2x Era300)
Same case as mine.
Peter when will Sonos fix insufficient dialog issues? They need to add Mid vocal control in Arc EQ. Please help!
I have no idea but that is a frequently requested for feature.
Great Job as usual...cant you please add if a new trueplay is required to your videos? I have to borrow an iphone. Tanks so much.
Oh, that's a good point. I will remind myself to test that next time. I have very seldom been using Trueplay and not paying much attention to it. Note taken.
I got the error message, but clicked out of it and all was, in fact, well: Arc / Sub 3 / Pair One SL
Sometimes I get that.
I love my Sonos ray and sub mini it’s very powerful in my small bedroom but im wanting to upgrade to the arc for Dolby atmos as I don’t have room for rear surround speakers
I support! You will get good simulated surrounds from the Arc.
I want to start with thanks to peter pee ❤ i did update but didn't work for me i noticed change of volume dropped miss-and-hit update. Good luck to others..
I didn't want to confuse anyone but there is a small little issue everytime Sonos updates... From a fresh update, the volume will drop just a very tiny bit. But the moment you adjust the volume any amount, the levels will come back again.
Very helpful, thank you!
I thought I was the only having this issue...
Also, if I don't do the Update, I notice streaming audio issues with my Roams. Typically, outside on my deck, they perform OK at about 80%. When all the burps & hiccups start...I know there's an Update awaiting. This last Update really had me P'd off.
When you say 80%, it means volume?
@@PeterPee I mean "Drop outs". No audio. Sometimes the Pad/App shows the time of the track moving (as if still playing the track)...but no audio. Sometimes the App shows the Roam is "off" even though I have the white "On" light. Any ideas? My network failing? That's about where I'm at...
Great info as usual Peter.
Looks like you are buying a Skoda Superb L&C. A fantastic car, and highly recommended. I have the combi version and have just ordered a new Scala Monte Carlo.
Sharp eye. I love that car. I am actually parting with the car and not selling it. I have been driving it for 5 years and it's the version with the EA888 engine and no other version before or after it got the same engine.
I had the same engine in my Golf GTI. The Gen 3 version is very good. The Superb is just that, Superb! I have the estate version and it’s a tardis inside. Got a 1.5 TSI with DSG coming on the Scala Monte Carlo. Going to put a RaceChip XLR5 throttle response unit on that to remove the dead zone on the DSG when accelerating. Its also got an anti theft mode which kills the accelerator pedal when you leave the car. Pity Sonos don’t do car speakers. Good luck with the car.
How much bass can Sonos subs take before they blowout?
I put in 25Hz before. At 100 percent volume. It survived.
Strange, usually it takes at least a few attempts as it has in the past, this time, smooth as silk.
Envious!
Thanks for yor reviews! I suppose that I'm Sonos fun, cause I've bougt about 25 Sonos Items, 12 of them were presented for my family and friends. Your reviews are so detailed that I enjoy watching everything. It’s very interesting which car you chose, because it will be very conscious. I drive an MB GLE and am very pleased. I'm looking forward to hearing about the car. You go so deep into the details that any review becomes a great source of knowledge.
That's a lovely car which I don't think I can afford because of where I live. If you are at all interested, I might do a video to explain why a lot of people cannot afford that level of car in Singapore.
@@PeterPee For sure it will be very interesting for many of your subscribers!
Re: update 16.1 - may be I'm wrong for determinate the true reason, but I had to turn off the loudness on my Arc to improve speech intelligibility due to mumbling. My current configuration for Home Cinema is Arc+Sub Mini+One*2 pcs through Sonos Boost . Recalibration by Trueplae did not improve speech quality. Have you had a similar observation?
Thank you for the video. If you need ideas, may I suggest you prepare another best settings video for Arc + Dual Sub + era 300? Also a refresh on the Arc tilting/positioning given we now have Era 300 (tilting still needed?) but also best TV for eARC audio passthrough or review or eARC switchers. For example Samsung TV have issues with Sonos Arc. Thank you!
Funny, I took the tilt off my Arc considering the front atmos are more for front heights and I actually tilted my era 300s an inch up since my era 300s are about 9 feet behind and a bit higher than ear level off the ground. I think my atmos bubble is quite a bit better! I'd like more confirmation though, ha ha.
@@johnnydo22it makes sense that you might need to tilt the Era 300 if they are so far away. My Sonos Arc sits on a low stand and that’s why I tilted but cannot feel much difference. Ideally I would like to be able the strength of the front height channels (7feet distance) separately from the Era 300 (just behind the couch )
I remember the days I had time to do those testing and videos. The last time I did the tilt videos, I spent days on end testing and moving and testing and it literally made me physiologically tired. :D
I might do another but I needed to drill holes into my new walls in order to get brackets that will allow the angling of the ERA 300 and that's a whole new project altogether.
@@PeterPeethank you - my request was simpler, about just tilting Sonos Arc in presence of Era 300. That might be easier to implement as video. But I agree when I test as home I go a bit crazy for days …
Thanks man!
One of the only recent updates that’s completely updated. Recently (past 6 months or so) my updates never finish even after a 2nd try. This one did take a 2nd attempt but the 2nd try was fast and finished completely. 👍
Goes to show you never know. I used to think Pete’s firmware review was solid, but I can testify that one brilliant set of results means nothing. I have typically avoided problems in the past that have plagued Pete and other users, but 16.1 was a complete disaster for my setup and continues to be causing issues with basic functionality and intermittent connectivity following the update. There I was thinking 16.0 is the best stable platform I’ve experienced in the last couple of years and now I’ve got into a mess. I have 20 devices ranging from the latest Era’s to the original “Ones” and it was a flop across the board. Once I’d put some hours in to force the 16.1 updates through I thought I was good…. Following day basic functionality and connectivity is failing. So I am just one of the unlucky ones this time round. But having been bitten, I will now call Sonos support before each update to find out if a significant number of complaints have been registered or not. Hope your solution continues to perform well. 👍
You got me worried and I went to check my setup again. It seems to be stable now. But for me, I have never gotten through an update smoothly ever within the last 2 years.
@@djt6546 I only have half of the speakers you have but I do have a pair of original ones all the way up to era 300s as surrounds. This update seems to sound just as good if not better than 16.0. This is the first update in a long time that has completely finished. Sorry you’re having issues, I just finished doing trueplay on my living room set up, all is good. Best of luck.
I got an error. I have 8 speakers
I think anything more than 1 speaker has that issue.
Disaster for me as it now says my phone OS is outdated & wont let me set up Trueplay!
Which OS/Phone are you on? From 16.0 onwards they took away support from iPhone 6 and 7.
I have the I phone XS, Only reason i got it was so i could setup Trueplay with it, It worked until this latest update! @@PeterPee
@@PeterPee I have the i phone XS, Worked fine up to this new update! Has OS 12
Great to see you Peter, hope you’re well.
I love producing videos and getting in touch but I have so little precious time nowadays. I know my pace of content has come down quite a bit but I hope to be able to pick it up.
First
Peter…your channel has totally changed my view on Sonos sound!! Thanks for continuing to take your time to explore and test these products to help end users like myself achieve the best sound possible out of these products.
My 16.1 update went perfectly smooth. Is there any chance you can give us fresh sound setting recommendations for the latest 16.1 update? If you could show settings for those of us that don’t have the Era 300s as well?
Thanks again for all you do!! 🙌
Thank you Peter👍
First
And second. :D
@peterpee from an audiophile perspective yes one sub will be enough… but if there is an opportunity for two subs…. When in Rome!
We are in Rome!
Thank you for always giving us a very detailed review! I appreciate you!
