  • I have had my fair share of frustration with the Sonos S2 app refresh. But after a few months and multiple updates later, things are looking brighter and Sonos CEO, Patrick Spence, is committed to making the app better. Personally, I have no doubt that they will make things right. And when the new product launches, it should signal that the S2 app is ready and up to speed.

I appreciate your passion for Sonos. I have been a fan and buyer for years but they have made critical mistakes. Some of their employees from behind the scenes have come out and shared that they were aware of the issues but rushed out the update so they could launch the Ace cans. The CEO is the person that is responsible for making the call to launch or wait. He makes the most money to take on the responsibility. The buck stops with him. He blew it. He should be fired. Time to promote or bring in someone that will make the right call now and in the future. It will send the message to current and future customers that things will change. Rock on.

Sonos should pause all there product launches until they get these problems solved. What was once a great sounding product with a simple easy and reliable app control is no longer. I’m heavily invested in Sonos kit and have been pulling my hair out with all these bugs, speakers dropping out and sound and reliability issues. Enough to consider selling all my kit on, should the CEO be sacked.. No he needs to make the changes to get Sonos back to were it once was and consider how he wins back the support of all us customers who spent a lot of hard earned cash on their products only to be let down very badly when the new app launched several months ago. Haven't been keeping up with each and every update so far since the big bad app update released, but I've found recently I need to bring the volume up to like 65 for it to feel "room-filling", I used to barely go over 50 because of how loud it was (on Arc with Era 300s).. Was this something in a previous update? I wish they would be more clear about how things are changing with your system with each update, but I guess that's a lot to ask for a company who is still struggling to add back in basic functionality from the old app version.

Make no mistake, the senior leadership team were certainly informed of all the problems with the new app, but made the decision to push ahead regardless - they thought they could manage the fallout later, or were just too incompetent to understand what the fallout would be. This is a management failure, not a technical failure. IMO, it's a symptom of our times, where DEI trumps merit in the hiring process.

12:11 to be honest with you the first thing that can come to mind that I think a large number of people would probably agree with, all your pre-existing customers send them an individual promo code of perhaps 40 to 45% off discount of the total price for any Sonos products. Now you know they may have to play with that percentage so instead of 45% it could be 50% or even 40%, but I do believe that this would temper your customers and clients issues with these ridiculous updates as of late.

Sonos, you really need to get your shit together⁉️🤬‼️ After 20 years of owning 18 Sonos units, I am ready to abandon the entire ecosystem. In my opinion, they have been going down hill for years. First signs they were headed in the wrong direction came with their very first update of their original AMP that stripped it of RCA outputs to force you to buy additional Connect Units. But they rebounded with a nice selection of small, medium and large dedicated speakers. But then when they stopped supporting all their early generation products and eliminated their mid sized speakers all without adding and new features to their newer generation of speakers⁉️. Instead they offered a portable speaker with a built in, non removable battery which equates to built in planned obsolescence and a freaking headphone⁉️.

Sometimes still, when waking the phone back up, I find the app has crashed and again have to reload it. Compared to the iOS version, it's slow to open, slow to find my devices, slow to load playlists - and the iOS version isn't exactly snappy anymore either. Sonos is facing a lot of competition in the soundbar market. One easy way to counter some of that competition is to all the Arc to pair with a set of front speakers. Now, all you can do is group them. I’d like to be able to pair them and then do TruePlay for the entire system. And yes, I am talking about 4 Era 300s (2 front, 2 rear), 2 subs and the Arc.

I definitely think they should empower customers to do this type of setup if they choose. I personally would just love a center channel setting to tweak. Or the ability to turn on the main front speaker in the surround Era 300s.. Before the Sonos brand kind of fell apart, I think there was a blanket assumption that their sound engineers were calibrating this stuff so professionally and intently, it would be blasphemous for the at-home consumer to be toying around with greater control settings. Now these control limits just feel unnecessary and are locking their consumers out of basic controls and setup options that their competitors offer, and seems as though there just isn't enough time and attention being placed on making sure their existing products have extremely high quality consumer experiences.

    It’s quite simple.
A CEO is responsible for the customer experience. SONOS failed. He failed.
CEOs routinely get fired and for less than this boondoggle. Look at it this way:
If Tesla released a half-baked app that essentially bricked every Tesla because they were trying to release the Cybertruck , Elon would be sacked like a rookie QB, hard.
True, a sound system is not a means of transportation but in principle, it is a comparable scenario.
The CEO has done nothing more than say “I’m sorry” and weeks after this self-inflicted calamity happened. Smart CEOs would have offered something in the way of rebates, inducements for new products and in general, would have shown the customers that the massive screw up was acknowledged and that some sort of compensation for loss of product function was offered.
He bungled the rollout of the app but worse than that, he bungled the aftermath which was an opportunity to increase brand equity and he has done little to acknowledge the loss of product use.

I rarely feel sympathy for retailers, given their markup, but brick-and-mortar SONOS resellers must be fuming. Assuming everything from the May fiasco is fixed by October, resellers have had 6 months of dealing with irate customers. You questioned why anyone would want to go back to the S1 software - surely that would be preferable to dealing with the botched app ? As mentioned earlier in this thread, beta acceptance testing is a thing - apparently not when you have a new pair of headphones to flog.

Rushing this garbage to the public boils down to greed. Yes, the CEO is ultimately responsible, he made the decision and should be held accountable. Fortunately I am not a shareholder, but those who are probably want his head on a platter. The Ace headphones were not going to make or break the company, before launch anyway, they are just another overpriced product that offer nothing more than their competitors, other than a higher price. They may have the distinction of going down as the product that killed the company. Was it worth it?
The ONLY way to fix this is to roll back the app. They are losing long time customers every day that this continues and their market share has dwindled to a fraction of what it was.
I already have a Sony HT-A9 system and am in the process of replacing my Sonos system with the new Sony HT Quad system. It is far superior in every way except versatility. However, I’ve never added to or upgraded my Sonos system, so that’s moot anyway.

I Thais for your update. I bought this week a Sonos Arc. After installing my new system - Sonos Arc and two Sonos one 2Gen speakers - I calibrated the system with Trueplay. But to be honest I find the sound of the system dramatic. The system sounds horrible, white or without Trueplay.
I did follow the instructions on you’r Trueplay RUclips vid. But the sound didn’t improve. My old system -Canadian company- sounded without calibrating a lot better. My room size is 32 m². Could this be also a software issue?

The Ones are probably a bit small for your room as surrounds - also a room that size should probably have a sub. My TV room is about 35 m2, I have 2 Era 300's, one Sub Gen 3, and the Arc, it's pretty good, but I still think it needs a bit more bass, so at some stage I will add another sub. My other room has a Beam gen 2, two Ones, and a Sub Mini - and I actually think it sounds better for most TV shows and definitely for music - but it's in a much smaller area.

ok, this situation is very confusing. May I ask a very short and simple question? if I buy Sonos Arc or Beam Gen 2, Sub, and two Era 100 for my home theater system will they all work fine without any problem? I do not need to mix and match other Sonos speakers in different rooms with my home theater system. Besides that, I do not have any other Sonos products at all. if I buy all that I mentioned above it will be my first Sonos product in my home. As I understood correctly all these disasters about the newly introduced app have to do with new products that they were trying to bring to the market and the new app update idea was to make all their products plus newly introduced products mix and match together how you want

Hmmm. I'm not calling for firings, I don't care and will vote with my feet (or ears) and I am looking at Apple speakers very seriously. I was loyal to Sonos and always excited about new developments, but I'm not convinced that customer satisfaction is a priority above profit margins! I think Sonos have had a captive audience and I am not convinced they care. I am sick of my speakers not working when I turn to the system. I don't want "fixes" I just want it to work seamlessly, I am not a "techhead" why should I be? I go back in time to proper wi-fi with wires, the good old days, still better! It "will be fixed' how do you know that? BTW Peter your postings are excellent.

Hi Pete and all the community :)
I really think that the Era 300 lacks more punch and deeper bass when playing as as single speaker. And that could be achieved raising the 150 hz and the 60 hz.
Also a solution I think is making feature with an extra bass/party mode in the app that you can turn on/off or making the bass eq more punchy/kick when you crank it up, could be a solution.
And is not going to bother anyone that likes more neutral sound.
Happens that people seems to like that punch in a speaker, making think that has a more robust woofer and most of all fun.
Pd: And also could be a useful feature to the headphones that according to the reviews, lacks of bass/punch/kick.
    What do you think?

Firstly those app guys probably was under pressure to come out with something extraordinary and they probably are not users, god knows maybe they don’t even have Sonos at home, second the CEO thinks the app with this complexity, it has to be good and people like complexity and the more rubbish and navigation steps it must be good and stands out from competitors, competitors? We are the only app that is this complex and comprehensive, we are good. Honestly for me as a Sonos user in my home with multiple system, yes the app plays a plart but I think they need to improve connectivity too. Till date it’s better but paying for premium why is it still having connections issues. Even cheaper products have more stable connections.

9:54 I will say that what is the point of someone emitting their faults if there's no punishments or repercussion? Anyone will admit that they've done something wrong and even gone as far as to say they take accountability if there's no punishment or repercussions. When you don't have skin in the game and you don't have to worry about losing skin in that game you'll say whatever you need to say to the audience to calm them down, because at the end of the day there's no repercussions, loss, or punishment towards you because you're the CEO.

I'm so over the Sonos app debacle. I have over 10 Sonos speakers and have absolutely loved them ever since they jacked up the app 😒. 1k updates later the app still sucks. I have 10+ very expensive paper weights. Patrick Spence (whatever he says, does etc) I'm agnostic to what they "plan" to do. If he stays, quotes, gets fired or whatever. Your right, I'm sure he's well off and money isn't a thing to him. This is more so for any future opportunities for him. Whatever, the doesn't concern me. I've waited for them to roll back the app. They haven't and probably won't. They will probably push out 1k more "updates". I'm planning to swap out my speaker system at some point. I'm debating on selling my system or smashing my speakers on RUclips as a statement. (Probably a dumb statement, because they are expensive paperweights) but we'll see. I appreciate Peter's Sonos reviews, videos, thoughts etc. Sonos has lost my trust. When paying hundreds of 💰 for something, I expect to be able to use the item with minimal to negative impact. Sonos now is a pain in 🍑 now. I'm over it. How can a company mess up something the was so good by destroying an app⁉️ like how⁉️🤦🏽‍♂️😮‍💨

Spense needs to stick around until all the issues are fixed - then he should take his golden parachute and leave - maybe early next year some time. The level of managerial incompetence that would see the new Sonos app released in the state it was in, it's just unacceptable. As for firing the software engineers - I bet a lot of those engineers were the ones pointing out all the problems and asking for more time to fix them before the release - I'm a software engineer myself - been in similar situations where management will not listen because they don't want to upset the shareholders by delaying a release, and seem to think they can bluff their way through a bad release instead - easier to get rid of the "trouble maker" engineers just pointing out the truth (I've never personally been fired for it, but I've been censured - now days I just keep my head down).
This kind of behaviour from SLT's MUST be punished, or business leaders will not learn that they must listen to their subject matter experts.

Sonos need their fans to throw money at them (and then get some new ones too), they need to fix the app and release those 2 products ASAP or this could become the beginning of the end.

I will say that with the Sonos products and the issues with the updates as of late if this was a medication and all of these updates and glitches with side effects they would more than likely pull the medication Off the Shelf at this point. I believe to try to remedy this issues that they've been having lately they should offer extended warranties to pre-existing customers regardless of if their warranty is currently active or has already expired, also I do believe that they should give each customer an individual promo code of 40 to 50% off of their products. Disappears to be a problem and an issue that's going to take quite some time to fix and require additional updates and I'm pretty sure with each update is going to come with its own bugs so this is at least at the minimum what Sonos should do for their customers.

I have a bad feeling when you are dependent on the whim of a company whether the system still works or not. If greed wins, I would be surprised if they deliberately paralyzed the system and then told you to buy a new one because your old one is no longer supported. I hope it doesn't go in that direction and Sonos ensures satisfied customers. They should now simply restore the gone functions and eliminate bugs.
