Factory Five Build Introduction

  • When viewer Malcolm Marsh reached out and asked me to build his Factory Five Cobra replica, I was a bit reluctant at first, but the more I thought about it, the more I wanted to do it.
Eventually we worked things out, and Malcolm brought me this Factory Five Mk II that was partially completed by its previous owner that passed away. To say I have my work cut out for me is something of an understatement. It’s one thing to build a kit car when it’s new, it’s something else entirely to take on the project after it was half completed and sitting in a garage for several years, but I’m up for the challenge, and looking forward to it.
I’m going to start by getting the body off the car and having a closer look at what I’m dealing with. After that, I’ll make a parts list and a plan, then, present it to Malcolm. Once I get that sorted, I’ll start making videos of the project.
I hope you stick around to see the progress as I bring this kit car to life. Stay tuned.

YES YES YES!!!!! I had a co-worker that did a Factory 5 Cobra 427...I wanted one ever since. I know it will never happen, but now I can live vicariously through you.
Yes, Shelby did file suit, mainly because they didn't ask him for permission. He even said in an old interview "I love that they made this, but instead of asking for permission, they begged for forgiveness"...or something to that effect...

Many years ago, Ferrari’s owner said something about the Jaguar E type within these lines: “This is the most beautiful car I have seen or ever made” or something within those lines. Well, I think the cobra was introduced about the same time. To me, and it is just my opinion, the Cobra was the most beautiful thing at the time. And it is still a stunning car to look at. Just look at that car. If you are in UK and if you know Beaulieu National Motor Museum, they have a blue AC cobra on display. Every time I visit Beaulieu Museum I take a few minutes to look at this car. Absolutely stunning. Really look forward for this project.

Vintage Air -- they will *definitely* be able to get you something that fits in that car. Jay Leno uses it for all of his cars that he puts A/C into, and I almost put one into my '68 Galaxie. The only reason I didn't is that I ran out of money and A/C was the first thing I had to cut from the build. They ain't cheap, but they're damn good from everything I've read and heard about them.

I'm going to add another comment in regards to the cracked fiberglass you pointed out. That part is one of the mold parting lines and yes, as you mentioned it should be filled with a fiberglass mix. These bodies were made of vinyl ester and should be filled with a vinyl ester fiberglass mix. 3M does make a marine mix that most of us have used. Lots of history on those parting lines on ffcars.com.

The original factory five boxes were packed to go along with the instruction manual for the build. So you open box #1 and build. You get to a point where box #1 is empty and move to box #2. Be VERY, VERY, VERY, VERY careful with the screws for the wind wings and visors or you will crack the windshield. I have a cracked one along with the nice styrofoam holder you can have.....I'm one state from you. The Mark 2 has a dropped driver side foot box and adjustable door hinges. If you don't know, Factory Five is in Wareham, MA, so only a day drive from you. I built a Mark 1.5 back in 1999, so this car is very familiar to me. It's like building a lego.

This will be great. I have been watching your videos for some time and used your help to rebuild my t5 and 8.8 for my FFR!

This looks like it's going to be very interesting and fun. Good choice for a video series.

I hope a company comes along and donates parts for this project to help the owner out. That would be sweet!
