I got it after 10 (yes, ten) years and I have this video to thank. It's because this video starts out from the basic sound everyone is capable of making as opposed to a halfway finished sound. Forever in your debt, Mr Callum Howle
Finally! This is honestly the best Fry Scream Tutorial that i was able to find on youtube. I was always able to do the Groak but could never get to project it. I'll keep practicing it and maybe write a little update on my 'journey' to Fry Screams!
@@ConstructBand i do have a question. if im 17 and my voice isnt fully developed or matured, can i still scream? i mean i have a really deep voice but it tends to be quiet
@@kolbycheeze7607 Yes, of course! You can learn to do this at any age, just like singing. The pitches you're able to hit might change as your voice breaks more is all. I don't think not being able to project your voice well is anything to do with your voice developing though. Anyone at any age with any kind of voice can learn to project! You just need to practise and figure out the right technique. Power and projection all comes from your diaphragm, whether you're singing or screaming. You also need to figure out what your vocal range is and practise at pitches that are suited to you. You can figure out your range easily - just get a piano or keyboard, start somewhere comfortable and work your way up, singing along to each note. Then do the same but going down to the lower notes. The lowest note to the highest note you can hit in your chest registration (which is essentially your talking voice) is your range! Hope this helps.

Been lifting weights for years and we call it 'bracing' when you tighten up your guts, 'you should feel the spot above your belly button lift' is a great explanation!
I posted a comment there like a week ago. I practiced very hard for the last few days and today I finally managed to 'unlock' my fry scream. This was like the only video that gave me a hint on how to scream properly, thank you!
It's been around a month i am trying to do "fry screaming". Watched many tutorials but i never felt like i was getting any progress. I never even get to first step in any of them but for the first time i actually got a close sound to "fry screaming". Your tutorial restored my faith man. Thank you.

Currently stucked with projection, but man has this been useful for just a couple months messing around with it. It's great how it feels to finally be in control of your diaphragm and folds compression, even to just a basic level. Been attempting false cords for years, wich might have helped me with this, but never knowing so much of whats going on in there and never feeling it to be this adecuate and safe. I wish my body interiorised things faster to start singing ASAP, but you gotta give yourself time and keep practicing. Thank you so much for this vid!
False cord screaming will develop good breathing technique and diaphragmatic control for sure. Hope you continue to progress my dude. Happy screaming! 👍
After watching 6 different videos with 6 failed attempts, this one video helped me get it first time ...I guess i was born natural considering i was doing it when i was younger before even realizing what is was or how i done it, thanks dude :D

And ive been singing this whole time too, and in 5 years i've gotten pretty solid and i do know all the techniques and muscles youre talking about, i just never knew what to build the scream around. That groak sound really made it click in my head. Thanks man!
Honestly dude, you have helped me a huge deal. Couldn't find any decent people to learn from, I think I understood you cause we are both from UK 😂 Thank you so much brother and if you could do a growl tut that would be great. Keep on going lad
Got my lows and mids and a decent tunnel throat vocal, haven’t been able to do highs and I’ve been doing vocals for 5+ years this tutorial was badass I really got a lot from it
Thanks man! Yeah, fry screams aren't like super high like those gut wrenching ones that Dani Filth can do but you can get them high enough to sound good in most circumstances and they're safe. That's the great thing about them. Minimal risk of vocal damage or injury. Plus, I don't really like super high screams anyway. 😋
Construct if you know who Phil Bozeman is I wanna achieve his level of highs not super high but are on nonetheless a high scream, I got the first 2 steps down today and I’m gonna keep watching this over and over until I’m able to fry scream and again thanks for the tutorial

Btw, I was scared, but it actually took me less than a month to get it right.. thank you so much, I would not have done it without your advice :D
Not gonna bullshit man this video ACTUALLY helped me! As a teen I messed up my vocal cords in bands and at shows, not properly doing it without pain. I went the Pantera route and screamed like Phil Anselmo. I took his advice for instance… drink a lot of alcohol, smoke cigarettes, and never warm up. So I turned to beatboxing because I have a deep raspy voice from all the abuse. But I decided to give metal vocals another shot watching vids of the younger guys like yourself. A++ on this tutorial. 🤘
Dude...Don't know how I just found this video. The only video that has only help me by the end of your video I was screaming....wtf. Thank you for putting this out.
I've always thought It never sounded loud in person without a mic and I thought I could never do it and then i tried a mic and damn it was decent I thought it was yelling and screaming like when your pissed off but obviously not 🤣
After seeing your video, I have been attempting to do some screaming. After a few weeks of intermittent practice, I managed to actually get a bit of a scream last night. It was kind of irritating to my throat, but nothing hurt. Will keep practicing. Thanks for the vid!
Dude thank you so much. This by far is the easiest to follow video. One getting there slowly. My goal is to resemble something of Chester Bennington and now because of you I’m determined to get there. Thanks!
Fatality Tyrael Don't worry man, just try to be patient and persistent. It always starts off quiet, it takes time and practice to be able to project it.
Nailed it on first try! LOL i know how to growl tho and "black metal scream". But what i did to do it was doing the groak to crackle then you have to think about pushing all the muscles around the throat and push with the belly, and then PUSH MORE :D i started with aioue vovels. Now its just practicing.
Dude, I didn't want to watch this tut cause this video "was to long" for me. It is by now the best tut I've ever seen. I watched severel videos but I couln't get the scream. I will practice it and I hope it will work! Thx m8 4 the video
I tried to make it as short as possible but I feel like 90% of it is important! There are no shortcuts when learning vocal techniques. Thanks for watching!
This is the best video I've honestly watched among all the tutorials so far, the thing is I'm having some trouble doing the crackle and my throat is getting ticklish and a little itchy. Hope I get to do this fry scream soon :>
The gurgly tip gave me an excellent idea how to perform screams. I can control it much easier and I can also find the technique much easier and I don't feel even a tickle
Mate, thanks so much for the tips! I've been trying to scream for about a month and then I found your video around 1 month ago and i just did my first scream last week! Now I just need to practice the projection and control for years i guess haha.. Cheers mate!
As you're activating your diaphragm and holding the groak, try to push the airflow further to the back of your throat and contract the muscles around your vocal cords. Hopefully this helps!
so many bs videos out there telling useless and unprecise information… might not be the best tutorial ever ^^’ but definitely the one that helped me the most thanks a bunch, really
Definitely not the best but I tried! Haha. I have a lot more knowledge on it now and have come up with what I think is a better teaching method. I should revisit this video and do more tutorials at some point. Thanks for the comment dude. 🙂
Volume is not a thing you should aim for. You should focus on making your scream sound good. You get your volume once you record your screams or use a mic on stage :D, other than that you can try to push your air out with more force ( dont overdo it ! ). What a lot of singers do is change the way they speak to get better at certain ranges, so mb if you try to speak louder in in general you could get louder screams ?! I dont know if it works, but could be worth a try ^^
That's the "projection" part, homie. You want to push from your diaphragm (NOT your chest) and gradually build up the volume/projection. I've known a lot of vocalists through the years and have been at it for a long ass time myself but on and off and not consistently for a while now. I've known cats that could blow your ear drums out with fry or false chord vocals, others that sounded dope but weren't very loud and everything in between. I was able to get very loud back in my teens when I first started, my highs were higher and my lows were lower and they were all loud. But as I've gotten older my range has actually narrowed despite my technique improving. Everyone is different and capable of different things but it largely comes down to practice and patience. It's not easy to pick up on the first place and doing it wrong will set ya back severely. Some people can get very loud while others don't get much volume at all but it's actually not a big deal. But like the other person said, volume isn't everything. You'd be shocked how much of the sound ya hear on records is post production and not at all what the person actually sounds like when they're doing it. I personally know of people who on their records sound like they're ripping their throats screaming but in person it's not even close lol And live you'll notice a lot of people cup the mic or hold it specifically so that it's very close to their mouth and often palmed in their hand in a way that is like a less intense cupping. Plus it's turned waaay up 😂 Very minimal example of post production clean up: m.ruclips.net/video/IuV5pt7PXHw/видео.html Examples of mic techniques: m.ruclips.net/video/wtyY5htRlKQ/видео.html Hope that helps some. Just practice and don't rush. Sometimes something just clicks and you're able to do more than ya were quickly but most of the time it's like working out, small, almost unnoticeable improvements that add up a lot over time. ✌
oh hi there my name is net I watched this video one year ago today and I have learned to scream from this video and I've practiced and sound amazing 10/10
i've watched so many other videos of fry screaming but i can't get past the 'groak' stage, i can false chord and would say i'm pretty proficient at it but my throat doesn't understand the tightening bit. any tips?
TheMaximusprime09 You're probably going to think this is pretty useless but honestly, the only advice I can give for getting through that stage is keep trying. Perseverance is key. Keep listening to how it should sound and keep trying to replicate it by tightening up in different ways and shifting your larynx around. It's not easy to get the hang of it but you will eventually. You just have to keep playing around with it man. If you can false chord scream, you're already at an advantage to people who can't do any kind of screaming techniques.
I also can false chord, but this fry screaming is really making it hard for people to understand. So am I clenching my throat? There's two ways of making the grudge noise when the pitch is low. You can either let more air out or clench your throat. Once I try to bring the grudge noise higher and higher, the grudge noise starts to fade and my singing voice comes in. If I clench hard enough, the grudge noise will still be there. So the real question is... how hard are we to clench our throats?
Jane Doe Hmmmm, it's not really clenching your throat as such. It's more tensing the muscles around your vocal folds. The aim is to create less room for your vocal folds to move so that they are vibrating very fast, thus creating a fry scream. This shouldn't feel overly tense. Try to relax. Then the projection comes from pushing with your diaphragm. As for pitching, try to change the airflow rather than lift the pitch up with your voice. To pitch higher, you want to aim the air towards the roof of your mouth and tighten the muscles around your vocal folds a little more. To go lower, aim the air towards your bottom teeth, open your throat a bit more and push your bottom jaw forward a little. Honestly though, I wouldn't even bother trying to pitch it until you can project it properly. Make sure you can get it nice and loud and you're comfortable at a moderate pitch first. Hope this helps!
I like your bro science approach, very realist. if you can please make a video showing you practicing normal low voice vocal fry. just you practicing so I can see how to develop it
Thanks man! It's been about 2 and a half years since I made this video and I have a much better understanding of the anatomy now. I can't imagine I'll make the video you're suggesting but if you want one to one tuition over Skype, I don't charge much. Hit me up on insta - @colourlesscal.
Great video! \m/ Been looking for ways to improve my fry sound and your explanations actually make sense to me. Most of the "properly" trained vocal coaches waste way too much time talking about anatomy, it's actually kinda useless coz I dunno what that anatomy feels like! and then they have exercises that don't make sense, like they're skipping steps in their instructions. Whereas you use non-technical methods I can actually understand :D it's like when I learned to false chord growl, I only figured it out after watching Angela Gossow tell a guy to pretend to be a big dog and do star jumps. I like dogs! I can do that haha! And I love my growls now but the limitations are starting to bug me so I'll try your tips to get my fry scream going ^_^ adding this video to my favourites :D P.S. thanks for those bookmarks!
I think a lot of vocal coaches talk about the anatomy because they don't know how to explain it in layman's terms! It's a bit of a cop out. Learning about the anatomy is definitely important but I don't consider it to be a valid method of teaching techniques. I prefer a more contemporary approach, showing people what I'm doing and explaining it with sound effects that can be imitated and will push you in the right direction. Thanks for checking out the video man!
I found this even with learning regular singing tbh! It's interesting to learn about the anatomy, but that doesn't help me work out how to sing better. I think your approach is much more practical. ^_^ I also love that you also have things in a solid step-by-step format. Thanks again for posting it, gives me something to work on while I'm between bands :D
finally. see, i can easily false chord scream but i wanted to fry scream to match some of my favorite artists. because when Matt shadows screams its obvious that im false chord screaming and that hes fry screaming when i do my covers of avenged sevenfold
Just keep trying bro. I promise you, it WILL come soon. Just keep toying with it and the more comfortable you get with the actual fry technique, the easier projection and pitching will be!
It's not an easy technique to grasp. I might be able to help via a vocal lesson on Skype if you have a webcam and a fairly decent microphone. I don't charge much so drop me a message on Instagram if you're interested - @colourlesscal
Yeah, what Zig The3rd says is right. You push with your diaphragm to increase the power. It feels like you're lifting something really heavy from the ground, pushing with your core. However, bear in mind that it's not something that will magically happen the second you start pushing with your diaphragm. It's a very gradual thing and can take a lot of practise. You should start to notice it getting slightly louder day by day.
Sounds like you're pushing a little too hard. Try to keep it light and controlled. It's very easy to bring your vocal cords into the mix when you're starting out so practise this sparingly.
Thanks man! You don't open up your throat when you're fry screaming. You do the opposite if anything! You create a lot of compression around your vocal folds so that they only have a tiny amount of room to move and they have no choice but to move rapidly and sort of vibrate. For singing, I would say yes but I wouldn't advise emulating a yawn while you sing. It should feel as natural as talking, with added power from your diaphragm, then you need to focus on retaining the position of your throat and diaphragm to hold out the required note. This can differ with other techniques though, such as head voice and falsetto. There is no diaphragm power involved with those techniques. Hope this helps!
That's pretty normal. It's gonna be super irritating at first so try to take it easy, keep it light and don't overdo it when you're just starting out. Really focus on how it feels and if you think it's causing some damage, take a break and see how you feel the next day.
I got it after 10 (yes, ten) years and I have this video to thank.
It's because this video starts out from the basic sound everyone is capable of making as opposed to a halfway finished sound.

no other video has helped me the most more than this one
I cant build from groak to crackle..but I can find the crackle somewhere 😂 But my Fry is too quiet damn
Fatality Tyrael Don't worry man, just try to be patient and persistent. It always starts off quiet, it takes time and practice to be able to project it.
me neither....I try to tighten up but then it starts to hurt ^^
@@pipigogerl don't push it too much, try using your false chords
that´s where it starts. I don´t know how they feel or how to get to use them D:
Perfect! This helped a lot. I’m using this tutorial to help me with my A-Level music tech composition
Awesome! You'll be a lot more qualified than me by the sound of it haha
This is the best video I've honestly watched among all the tutorials so far, the thing is I'm having some trouble doing the crackle and my throat is getting ticklish and a little itchy. Hope I get to do this fry scream soon :>
This is the best tutorial by far in my opinion. Good job dude.
Thanks dude! :)
The gurgly tip gave me an excellent idea how to perform screams. I can control it much easier and I can also find the technique much easier and I don't feel even a tickle
Watched a bunch of fry scream videos but gotta say that this one was the best of all... Thnx
Thanks buddy, glad to hear it :D
😄
Finally someone who made me understand how to progress from the groak thing! Its all about getting the muscles tighter! Thanks dude
Happy days! Glad I could help bro 😁
Mate, thanks so much for the tips! I've been trying to scream for about a month and then I found your video around 1 month ago and i just did my first scream last week! Now I just need to practice the projection and control for years i guess haha.. Cheers mate!
Awesome! Nice to hear that you're progressing well 😊
Thank you! One of the very few well-explained videos. Very helpful :D
Got the groak down, got the crackle down, Im going crazy trying to figure out how to project it :(
sounds sick dude - never really been too interested in trying it but saw your fb link and here i am
Thanks man! Give it a go if you get bored or something 😆
tbh, this video has the clearest explanation, even thought I stil cant do a crackle properly
As you're activating your diaphragm and holding the groak, try to push the airflow further to the back of your throat and contract the muscles around your vocal cords. Hopefully this helps!
Thanks very much for the reply. I'll try my best to improve. Cheers!
so many bs videos out there telling useless and unprecise information…
might not be the best tutorial ever ^^’ but definitely the one that helped me the most
thanks a bunch, really
Definitely not the best but I tried! Haha. I have a lot more knowledge on it now and have come up with what I think is a better teaching method. I should revisit this video and do more tutorials at some point. Thanks for the comment dude. 🙂
You taught me to fry scream bruh❣🤘 Respect from Nepal🇳🇵🇳🇵
🙌🙌🙌
watched so many videos. finally i can do it. thank you.
Awesome!
I can do the voice but the volume is slightly higher than a whisper. How can I get it louder?
Plus it's turned waaay up 😂
Very minimal example of post production clean up:

Examples of mic techniques:
m.ruclips.net/video/wtyY5htRlKQ/видео.html
Hope that helps some. Just practice and don't rush. Sometimes something just clicks and you're able to do more than ya were quickly but most of the time it's like working out, small, almost unnoticeable improvements that add up a lot over time. ✌
good tutorial. To be honest the best one around. thanks!
Thanks Peter! Glad you dig it
oh hi there my name is net I watched this video one year ago today and I have learned to scream from this video and I've practiced and sound amazing 10/10
Thank you, thank you and thank you. I finally got it down after watching this tutorial.
Amazing! Glad to have helped 🙌
Could you help me going from groak to crackling....? I can't understand how to do that
Michael Donini same
@Thomas Radford thank you man. I had the same question and it worked.
i've watched so many other videos of fry screaming but i can't get past the 'groak' stage, i can false chord and would say i'm pretty proficient at it but my throat doesn't understand the tightening bit.
Construct thanks man, I'll keep trying
try my tutorial if you are still struggling.
I've been a death metal vocalist for 10 years. Never really could get this down until now, Killer tutorial man.
Awesome, thanks man! Always helps to have some prior experience so no doubt you picked it up pretty quickly.
Nice vid and great explanations, thank you!
Thanks for the comment! 🙏
One of the best videos I've come across tnxx
Thank you!
Excellent vid! I actually made progress, thank you!
Thanks bud for the input into vocal fry
Thanks for your comment Karl!
I found this enormously helpful! Thank you for sharing.
Great demo!
And I love my growls now but the limitations are starting to bug me so I'll try your tips to get my fry scream going ^_^ adding this video to my favourites :D
P.S. thanks for those bookmarks!
Most helpfull tutorial out there!! Honestly, thanks so much!
No problem, thank you for the appreciation!
Would love to see a tutorial on adding voice from you!
Awesome! Gonna start trying to do this!
joeyconscript Let me know how it goes dude!
finally. see, i can easily false chord scream but i wanted to fry scream to match some of my favorite artists. because when Matt shadows screams its obvious that im false chord screaming and that hes fry screaming when i do my covers of avenged sevenfold
Awesome! Glad I could help mate :)
well i cant add my voice man. ive been trying everything and i dont know where im going wrong
Just keep trying bro. I promise you, it WILL come soon. Just keep toying with it and the more comfortable you get with the actual fry technique, the easier projection and pitching will be!
Awesome tutorial!
Thanks! 😁
You explain it well what other fail to say is the tensing of your throat while doing the fry. I can kinda do it but tense up to much
Thanks man! Hope you get the hang of it soon
I'm really having trouble turning that groak into the crackle and i've been trying to learn fry for about a year now lmao
It's not an easy technique to grasp. I might be able to help via a vocal lesson on Skype if you have a webcam and a fairly decent microphone. I don't charge much so drop me a message on Instagram if you're interested - @colourlesscal
This helps me a little
I'm doing it right but it's a little quiet. Any tips on how I can get the volume higher?
afifa haque, Push harder using your dihafram
Yeah, what Zig The3rd says is right. You push with your diaphragm to increase the power. It feels like you're lifting something really heavy from the ground, pushing with your core. However, bear in mind that it's not something that will magically happen the second you start pushing with your diaphragm. It's a very gradual thing and can take a lot of practise. You should start to notice it getting slightly louder day by day.
This helped me so much thank you!💖
I lileraly watched the video and started doing it
Wicked! Thanks for watching mate :)
I can do the croak thin but I am not sure if I'm doing it the right way
thank you so so so much for sharing this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank YOU for commenting!
Everytime I try to project my throat starts to tickle so much that I have to stop and I never know why.
nice review. but i wonder what is behind the hanging cloth?
A door! 😊
I'm already getting the hang of this! Sometimes I'll feel something catch in my throat and I'll cough.
That's pretty normal man, it's a very tickly technique! Keep going at it, you'll soon smooth it out. 😊
I feel pressure in my vocal cords while doing this. Am I doing it wrong?
Sounds like you're pushing a little too hard. Try to keep it light and controlled. It's very easy to bring your vocal cords into the mix when you're starting out so practise this sparingly.
Best video on the web for fry screaming. Do you open your throat while singing, like when you yawn, or not?
Is it normal to feel the need to cough afterward or am I straining myself
That's pretty normal. It's gonna be super irritating at first so try to take it easy, keep it light and don't overdo it when you're just starting out. Really focus on how it feels and if you think it's causing some damage, take a break and see how you feel the next day.
@@ConstructBand Thank you so much I was pretty worried 😁
Sick video dude!
Cheers guys! Hope to play a show with you guys again soon ❤
Definitely 👊
I can do It but very silent can I have some advice?
Thanks a lot dude
It helped a lot
Glad to hear it brother. Thanks for the comment!
I can croak but I can get the crackle or raspy sound thing
So...why do I always cough after the tickling...?
It will irritate you a little at first for sure. Keep going and you'll soon get used to it!
Is this what I need for thrash metal vocals?
This is an amazing tutorial, please do one for false cord!
I may just do that mate! If I do, it'll be on my personal channel so make sure you subscribe preemptively. ✌

cheers for this
