When Brandon referred to this as one of Bruce Willis's old roles, I had one of those horrible moments when I suddenly realise how old and out of touch I am.
Chris Tucker's character was a stroke of genius as since then we have seen a rise of these sort of hyper energetic over the top hosts (especially on social media). So today you see him as parodying them, while back when I don't think people appreciated what he was portraying.
I loved Chris Tucker in this movie which is one of my favorites. He was just so far out there and really put everything into that Character. It's just a complete 180 of who he is. I can't picture anyone trying to do that role.
The whole movie pays an homage to the French sci-fi scene in visual arts and storytelling, with comics like the Heavy Metal / Metal Hurlant magazines and the Les Humanoïdes Associés, creative circle of renowned artists that rocked the world in the late 60s and revolutionizes the sci-fi scenes throughout the world. Pretty much any media after that owes something to these artists for inspiring their works, from Hollywood movies to illustration, even Japanese mangas. This movie has so much references to those old scene and legends. Moebius' works such as The Long Tomorrow pretty much inspired the Blade Runner series, and The Incal inspired the Fifth Element. Characters like Ruby Rhod, the overacting hyperactive host is a dime a dozen in these comics.
"The "Divine Language", spoken by Leeloo, was invented by co-writer and director Luc Besson, and further refined by Milla Jovovich, who had little trouble learning and developing it, as she was already fluent in four languages. The language had only four hundred words. He and Milla Jovovich held conversations, and wrote letters to each other in the language as practice. By the end of filming, they were able to have full conversations in this language."
Theres a hint of Aramaic weaved into it to flesh out the Lilith theme, the film is loosely based around. She's the left hand ,gevurah, the fifth sephirah, the orange hair represents the fire of God. Sardonyx is also the fifth gemstone in Revelations 21.20 ,seen as a stone of courage and protection against evil.
Btw, I´m pretty sure, the way Brandon always pronounced "Besson" the first time around actually is the correct one! With the stress on the last syllable......
@@trevorjames1030 I don't think thats what Besson based his movie on... He said he created a basic version of it when he was younger, he was super influenced by French Sci fi comics. I mean it's your interpretation, but it's certainly not the actual case.
funny you mention the made up language in the taxi. Bruce Willis wasn't told she'd be speaking another language, his reaction to her jibberish is completely genuine :)
@@BrandonLikesMovies about the design of the movie the production contacted and hired renouned french comic book artist Jean Giraud Moebius to design the art for the film which most of his artwork made it into the final product, especially the beehive aliens and the city landscape if i remember it correctly.
The song in the opera scene "The Diva Dance" is edited and was written in a way that was deemed impossible for humans because you couldn't hit the notes in such quick succession. It fits the movie though because it's an alien singer. They recorded the notes of the singer (Inva Mula) individually and then digitally arranged it. Well... and then there is Jane Zhang in a live performance of the song: ruclips.net/video/kJl2uPNsJEk/видео.html
That's what I was going to comment! One of my favourite scenes, and I love that it took another 20-odd years before someone was actually able to recreate it
The singer's who have done it live all did it great however they all fudged the notes in the impossible part a bit but they are so close it's hardly worth mentioning.
@@Pinkielover Not really. I have seen tons of women with better or equal body and i have no crush on them. It's mostly her personality...and looks yes. It's the combination of good looks, innocence, weirdness and being a badass all at the same time.
@@tommikoistinen2321 Not to be crushing on her but when this movie came out I just wanted to be her . I always thought she has the kindest eyes . When she tells Corbin that she doesn't know love.... I still tear up .
The design of this movie is by the famous french comic artist Moebius, Luc Besson incorporated it as a homage to him as he's a huge fan. He later made a movie directly based on a comic by Moebius called 'Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets'. Besson wrote the story himself when he was young and always imagined it as a Moebius comic. Moebius has inspired the design of many movies, some of the most well known are Ridley Scott's 'Blade Runner' and (parts of) 'Alien'. The language Leeloo speaks was invented by Jovovic and Besson, it's actually just a combination of german and serbo-croatic if i remember correctly. :)
yeah even tho they are the Main Protagonist and Antagonist of the movie, at no point in the movie they met or even hear of each other, wich now that you point that out, is really weird and like unexpected.
They briefly meet in the Novelisation, onboard the Cruise Ship. Korben tricks Zorg with the same move he used on the robber earlier, with the difference that the ZF-1 is *actually* out of ammo.
No one is going to mention that Corbin's friend, the General, is Leon from the original Blade Runner? Whenever i see him in a film that is how i reference him, for obvious reasons. I love The Fifth Element, it's so rewatchable and quotable. One of my favourite scenes is when Corbin is being robbed by the crazy guy, steals his gun then he breaks out into a shuffle dance while clapping his hands. Bizarre stuff, but i love it. GIMME THE CASH!! Take it! I don't need it! And that laugh he gives, it's all great stuff. I still to this day use these phrases as part of my lingo. Also of course, Aziz! Light! Thank you Aziz.
“Gimme the cash” is a one of a kind moment that has nothing to do with the movie, but let’s you know immediately this movie is for you. Top 3 ALLTIME movie in any genre for me
My favourite romance film of all time. Yeah I said romance...It's in the title and it makes me weep. One of first films I saw as kid that made me realise what love is. (Probably why I'm so messed up) Especially when I realised Gary Oldman was Drexel. The cast includes Oscar winners performing Oscar worthy scenes with Oscar worthy dialogue. When a girl says to me "you don't like romance?"...I say "i LOVE True Romance". If a girl ever says "that's an awesome movie" instead of "what?"...then she's a keeper.
As a film composer I just have to say I love the work Eric Serra did in this movie. Diva Dance is beautiful. Trying to create something that can only be sung mechanically (though it was later proven people can sing Diva Dance) was cool. To take an already known opera song and add that too it is awesome. The song Little Light of Love is also another good song. Loved his score. The movie all together was fascinating. The monster work, the set design, the acting, editing, all was beautiful. Glad you finally watched this movie. :D
I never did research how Tricky came to be in this film. Also saw this today, might be of interest to a fellow fan: www.billboard.com/articles/news/dance/9445044/tricky-interview-20-questions-billie-eilish
Oh this is my favorite movie of ALL TIME! Oh man I love being a part in any capacity of someone's first time watching it :D btw I dig your channel dude. Keep it up.
He also was saved by Tarzan and helped get him back to civilization in "Greystoke: The legend of Tarzan". Ian Holm has a very interesting resume. He IS missed.
That language is Mondoshawan, a tongue usually called "the Divine Language." actually a completely made up language. The director Luc Besson fashioned this 400 word language himself and only he and Milla Jovovich could speak it when the film was released.
Luc Besson wrote the 5th Element story when was 16. Luc Besson first approached Demi Moore about the 5th Element, I am not sure if he tried to pitch the Leeloo role to her or if it was a way to connect with Bruce Willis. In Besson's words : Everyone in L.A. was saying, “Oh, if you don’t have a star, you can’t make the film.” But we didn’t even try to go to Bruce Willis, because he was too expensive. And then I have lunch with [Willis’ then wife] Demi Moore, and Bruce shows up at the dessert and he just says, “Hey, my man, what about me?” [laughs] and I tell him [about the money]. He said this very sweet line: “If I like it, we will make an arrangement.” Bruce Willis : He [Besson] came out to our house in Malibu. I just liked Luc - I liked the story, I liked the idea. I thought it would be fun to go to France and make a movie. Milla Jovovich married director Luc Besson seven months after this movie premiered. Edit : the actress playing the Diva is Besson's ex-wife.
what i found out after a quick google, she was 12 when she met him, while he was 29. they started dating when she was 15 and she gave birth to their first kid at 16. the french, ladies and gentlemen.
@@Hide_Me Obviously I cannot know you nationality, but I present information about Child Marriage in the US. In the US, there is not much federal legislation concerning child marriages. Each state, territory and federal district sets the marriage age in its jurisdiction. Between 2000 and 2015, at least 200,000 minors were legally married in the United States. 86% of those marriages were between that minor and an adult. About 5% of the minors were aged 15 or younger, meaning they would be under the age of consent in all United States territories. 29% of the children were aged 16. 4% of the children were aged 15.
@@gazorbo. Holy shit. That seems so crazy. So many questions..how could they possibly justify any of that? How did you find that info? Can you do the Aussie stats (if you know em) please.
@@probswontcurreply8182 Yes, so many questions. How can it still be this way? A mix of people's overall ignorance on the topic, and political will to change the status quo which could risk an senator/governor (...etc...) to be re-elected, even at Presidential level I guess they don't want to be involved with this, unless public opinion changes, but going back to my first point the public opinion is missing so far I guess. These laws will be updated slowly I guess. I found the information and aggregated from Wikipedia (Ah the internets! It must be true then) and some reference links. As for Australia, under Australian law, children under 18 cannot give their permission to marry. Children aged 16 and 17 years old can only marry if they have the permission of the Court and their parents. No person under 16 can legally marry in Australia under any circumstance. Australia seems to want to avoid force under-aged marriage and will involve a judge to legally grant the marriage if 17 or 16. This is a way, I guess, for the underage person to complain (if able to control their fear) or maybe someone else can intervene, or as last resort the judge can detect that something is not right. Still, some religious practices might decide to marry underage people but the religious ceremony is not a legal ceremony. Even under such circumstances I suspect that the age of consent (16 to 17 depending on the state) would have to respected, but unsure how one being trapped in a forced marriage would be able to report the offence.
@@gazorbo. I am relieved that Australian laws regarding this matter are more sane. As to being able to report the offence...spouses/ children are allowed to report against anyone no matter the connection is my understanding going by what I’ve heard and seen. I imagine most people assume like I did that the law would not allow children to marry in first world countries. This is definitely an eye opener. Thank you for taking the time to reply.
Chris Tucker as "Ruby Rhod" seems to be divisive. For the life of me I can't understand why. He was perfect in that role, and one of the most entertaining parts of the movie. For my money, The Fifth Element is one of the best sci-fi movies ever made. It's so funny and playful, and makes light fun of the Sci-Fi genre. Chris Tucker's performance was a work of art, and one of many strong aspects to that film.
@@Justanotherconsumer Some people can't stand this particular character. Ruby is Chris Tucker x100. But I agree with you though, he's one of my favorite movie characters.
@@Concreteowl God damn it... One of THOSE types of replies again? Like, IMMEDIATELY?? Shall I just stop sharing any information about what I don´t like in the future whatsoever and start living in a cookie-cutter, purple world of rainbows and roses?? How about you people just stop instantly attacking just some random guy on the internet, almost nobody knows any shit about personally, JUST because he said, that he doesn´t like a person, literally almost the entire world knows like a bunch of things about!??? How about that?? That would be much more like the type of world, I would wanna like to live in! Sorry, but I have been facing a few other of these stupid kind of initial replies in recent past, that really come across like some reactionary arguments you would hear in kindergarten. By children fighting over trivial stuff like the toys they wanna use. *I* obviously didn´t wanna hear that! And I bet nobody gained anything positive by the fact that you just HAD TO spew this stupid personal insult within an instant to me! Believe it or not, I am actually generally a very nice and polite person in real life. I just also wanna feel free to share some opinions once in a while about stuff, that I don´t like! And not having to be afraid all the time to get attacked by some pissed off children again, JUST CAUSE! You´re lucky, that I don´t even care enough about Prince to have even developed some strong opinion! I just don´t give a fuck about him and I´m totally cool with everyone who absolutely love him! Heck, I just remembered, on eof my best friends told me, he does! Just try to be at least a little bit more sensitive in the future! I mean, what do you think, the situation would have been like, if I actually wanted to criticise something specific? Like trying to make an argument on something I just happen to have strong opinions about? I can tell you right now, I would have probably reacted a lot more offended. You just have to realize at some point: NONE of us really gains ANYTHING positive EVER by your just stupid, reactionary type of replies like "Oh yeah? Well I´m sure YOU suck, too!", except for maybe you feeling that small bit of relief inside like "Ha! NOW I showed him!" And honestly at this point, I´m really so over this shit, that I´m actually either really going to stop sharing any more of this. And probably stop caring at some point after that, too and become a robot, like all the others before me, too. OR Next time someone yells at me for not liking something they like, like "Oh yeah? Well, I´m sure, you suck, too!" I´m gonna ask in return: "Oh yeah?? *BASED ON WHAT????* " Because that´s also the common thread that I found with these conflicts and arguments with those people! They always base their insults and negative opinion about me ON FUCKING *NOTHING!!!!* ......

The Fifth Element is one of those movies that, when my girlfriend sees it airing on TV, she HAS to stop and watch it. She freaked out when I came home with the DVD one day.
Hi Brandon : ) I am very happy you liked this movie for what it is , accepting to it , for you enjoyed it . This although is an unusual film I found the contrasts in it pulled me in and got me invested so much. I love her character and her interactions with Corbin and the Priest . Thank you Brandon for your reaction here .
I saw this 5 times at the movie theatre when it came out. And once at the movie theatre a few years ago during the 20th Anniversary. I still have all those movie stubs. I've kept about 90% of my stubs since 1996.
This is legit my favorite film of all time, at least in terms of rewatchability and overall sense of “fun”. If I see this showing on TV, as long as I wasn’t doing something urgent, I will literally stop what I was doing and watch. The editing, as you noted, is incredible.
I love hearing your commentary on the making of the movie, like the sound, cinematography, dialogue. But I admit I think you sometimes get caught up in trying to "decode" the plot, and it was really entertaining to see you just... absorb, and enjoy the hell out of it lol. Love your reactions!
Ahhh...the days when Bruce Willis still acted a part and cared about it instead of phoning in "performances" like he has done for years now. I miss those old days.

I love this film and think at the time and even today, it's considered kind of goofball sci-fi. I think it touches a lot of different styles of sci-fi and has some incredible casting. The Mondoshawan ship is also one of my favorite ship designs.
The visuals and production is superb here. And the whole movie is really well written and you can notice a lot more fun details if you watch it again. This was a great Japanese RPG storyline. Girl from another world drops out of the sky into the arms of the main character, they meet up with a Priest and a Bard to save the world against an ultimate evil. Always loved the film, nothing really like it and nothing like it has been made yet. Hope he stays on the 90s funny sci-fi action, Demolition man and such.
Jesus. There's nothing "Japanese" about this movie. If anything it's the other way around. It was Western influences that shaped most of your favorite Japanese Manga and Anime. It was the German Metropolis movie on the 1920s that inspired the cartoony boom of Mechas and Robot media in Japan in the 50s. It was the French's Art Deco visuals that inspired the movie. Throughout the late 60's and 70's, the French powerhouse Les Humanoides Associes rocked the world with their visionary ways of combining Sci-Fi and High Fantasy visuals into an unorthodox narrative and unconventional sequential art in their comics, compiled and published in Metal Hurlant or Heavy Metal magazines. Everything you see thus far, everything, has been inspired by their visions in the 70s, all your favorite iconic Hollywood movies from Aliens, Blade Runner, to the Matrix, Avatar etc Japanese artists were still doing cartoony manga ala Osamu Tezuka's artstyle in the 70s. The Japanese magazine, the Starlog magazine was responsible for bringing in Western influences to the Japanese masses, bridging the gap between the world pre-internet era in the late 70's, localizing the wonderful world of Western Sci-Fi pop culture like Star Trek, and later republished works from the MH/HM magazines. Suddenly in the 80s and the 90s there's a sudden influx of cool Japanese illustration, from Akira to Appleseed and Ghost in the Shell. All of this are inspired by those massively influential circle of French artists. This movie is an homage to the Les Humanoides Associes, Luc Besson's inspiration from when he was a child. How many other things in Japan were borrowed from the French? All those sailorfukus, sailor hats, your favorite maid outfit, French cafe, bakery, patisserie etc Les Humanoïdes Associés is massively influential and has shaped everything you see in movies, comics, video games you see nowadays. Jean 'Moebius' Giraud is probably the single most influential artist in modern times. This is fact, you can find articles and interviews from famous Mangakas and how the Starlog magazine, Moebius influenced their creative industry in the late 70s. It was a paradigm shift.
5:55 - "Is that guy from Dark Knight?...From the inmate boat at the end of the movie." Us - "No he was Debo in Friday (1995) first with Chris Tucker." Speaking of which, add Demolition Man (1993), Friday and Rush Hour (and its sequels) to your reaction flicks.
I think it's great that you can create something that maybe isn't the most AMAZING thing ever but it is still loved enough that it sticks with a lot of people. Whenever I hear someone use the word "bizarre", I have to say "It's not BIZARRE, it's the divine _____"

Well... and then there is Jane Zhang in a live performance of the song: ruclips.net/video/kJl2uPNsJEk/видео.html
Telris86 Check out this dude Dimash who smashed the Diva Dance live: ruclips.net/video/o5zMupUOgQo/видео.html
its also the ex wife of Luc Besson who play the blue diva in the movie !
That's what I was going to comment! One of my favourite scenes, and I love that it took another 20-odd years before someone was actually able to recreate it
The singer's who have done it live all did it great however they all fudged the notes in the impossible part a bit but they are so close it's hardly worth mentioning.
Dimash did a better job. He really is an alien.

Also most of star wars is inspired (or more) from Möbius and metal hurlant work.
I hate to correct you but Moebius didn't do Valerian. That was the writer Pierre Christin and artist Jean-Claude Mézières.
@@Renfield97 You're right, i don't know how i could mix them up, could have sworn i saw a documentary about it faturing Jean Giraud. :P
Yeah... Shame Valerian was pretty bad.

One thing I didn't realize until I had seen this movie several times is that Bruce Willis and Gary Oldman never meet.
And Gary Oldman was Bruce's boss and was 1 of the Million he fired when Zorg told his henchmen to fire a million instead of 500 thousand
yeah even tho they are the Main Protagonist and Antagonist of the movie, at no point in the movie they met or even hear of each other, wich now that you point that out, is really weird and like unexpected.
They briefly meet in the Novelisation, onboard the Cruise Ship. Korben tricks Zorg with the same move he used on the robber earlier, with the difference that the ZF-1 is *actually* out of ammo.
Gary Oldman is a chameleon. Even in movies like Batman begins, I'm always halfway through before I'm like "hey, that's Gary Oldman"
Want to see Gary Oldman go as chameleon as you can get? His Mason Verger in Hannibal is chilling!
For me, the General is most recognizable as the British thug from 'Tango and Cash.'

Definitely a good suggestion, in fact we need waaay more tony Scott. Great vid once again👍
My favourite romance film of all time. Yeah I said romance...It's in the title and it makes me weep. One of first films I saw as kid that made me realise what love is. (Probably why I'm so messed up)
Especially when I realised Gary Oldman was Drexel.
God i love this movie.
Edit: Also, one of the few movies where the protagonist and antagonist don't have a single interaction with one another.
This movie is like “visual potpourri.” Definitely unique and impossible to put in only one genre.
The main henchman to Gary Oldman is played by Tricky, an incredible musician who is also a part of Massive Attack.

Well, the last time Bilbo was in space with a guy named Dallas it didn't end well for either of them...
He also was saved by Tarzan and helped get him back to civilization in "Greystoke: The legend of Tarzan". Ian Holm has a very interesting resume. He IS missed.
That language is Mondoshawan, a tongue usually called "the Divine Language." actually a completely made up language.

He said this very sweet line: “If I like it, we will make an arrangement.”
Bruce Willis : He [Besson] came out to our house in Malibu. I just liked Luc - I liked the story, I liked the idea. I thought it would be fun to go to France and make a movie.
Milla Jovovich married director Luc Besson seven months after this movie premiered.
Edit : the actress playing the Diva is Besson's ex-wife.

Obviously I cannot know you nationality, but I present information about Child Marriage in the US.
NOW I showed him!"
And honestly at this point, I´m really so over this shit, that I´m actually either really going to stop sharing any more of this. And probably stop caring at some point after that, too and become a robot, like all the others before me, too.
OR
Next time someone yells at me for not liking something they like, like "Oh yeah? Well, I´m sure, you suck, too!" I´m gonna ask in return: "Oh yeah?? *BASED ON WHAT????* "
Because that´s also the common thread that I found with these conflicts and arguments with those people! They always base their insults and negative opinion about me ON FUCKING *NOTHING!!!!* ......

@meaturama Funny enough, I meet people all the time who have never seen Stargate, even some who've never *heard* of it.
Fuck no Stargate is lame
@@goonymiami no point in trying to interact with someone that talks like that online cuz they can't get attention in real life.
Pretty good reaction mate, at least you were far more appreciative than some other reaction channels!
Everything you see thus far, everything, has been inspired by their visions in the 70s, all your favorite iconic Hollywood movies from Aliens, Blade Runner, to the Matrix, Avatar etc
Japanese artists were still doing cartoony manga ala Osamu Tezuka's artstyle in the 70s.
All those sailorfukus, sailor hats, your favorite maid outfit, French cafe, bakery, patisserie etc
Les Humanoïdes Associés is massively influential and has shaped everything you see in movies, comics, video games you see nowadays.
Jean 'Moebius' Giraud is probably the single most influential artist in modern times.
This is fact, you can find articles and interviews from famous Mangakas and how the Starlog magazine, Moebius influenced their creative industry in the late 70s. It was a paradigm shift.
And besides, Bruce Willis wasn't an angsty teen that multiple female characters are competing for.
Dude, idk if it's Patrons, but you're picking some incredible movies/shows to watch. Keep up the great work
5:55 - "Is that guy from Dark Knight?...From the inmate boat at the end of the movie."
Us - "No he was Debo in Friday (1995) first with Chris Tucker."
Speaking of which, add Demolition Man (1993), Friday and Rush Hour (and its sequels) to your reaction flicks.
Zeus in No Holds Barred
I think it's great that you can create something that maybe isn't the most AMAZING thing ever but it is still loved enough that it sticks with a lot of people.
Whenever I hear someone use the word "bizarre", I have to say "It's not BIZARRE, it's the divine _____"
"That glass was not unbreakable"
I'm split on your visual pun there....
