    Bassit: Howie Epstein again
I've always enjoyed Tom Petty's music. It would always be on the radio as a kid, so I grew up with it. I can remember very well when he died. I was in the servery of my college and my freshman year roommate and I were chatting (he was a big petty fan too, and actually saw him in concert) and he brought it up. I hadn't heard the news before then, so I remember it clearly
The kick drum is very deceptive on making you often think that it's not tied, but it comes up once or twicein the song where it's not, but for the most part it's tied over the middle of the bar throughout the song.
also, the first 3 notes and then when they come back right after the solo and before the verse (the dropout), those notes are there and soft in the recording, but live they are never played in any recordings I saw or heard
    • Video
1:48 - Howie is using his thumb, no pick
2:47 - position is middle of the neck
3:01 - 7-5? He doesn't play those pitches in the studio version. There, they go down instead of up at the end of the phrase
This is one of two live videos I could find where Howie was still alive. The other was a benefit concert that didn't show Howie at all.
Actually, I found this live concert:
    • Tom Petty & the Heartb...
2:02:25 howie's playing chords on the guitar. Not sure why though. He was the recording bassit according to wikipedia, and so there are 4 people on guitar for the song in this performance.
    • TOM PETTY & THE HEARTB...
not howie, but pick and no open strings
    • Tom Petty - Learning T...
again, not Howie, but you can see the same fingering that I tabbed out
    Thanks for watching! Enjoy :)

I don’t I’ve seen a more authentic smile in quite some time. I hope this young man has the true qualities of gratitude and love that he exudes while playing this simple bass line.

I seem to remember not so long ago someone asking about the role of Jeff Lynne in a Tom Petty recording. This song was co-written by Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne and he is part of the backing vocals. Although not officially a Heartbreaker I feel he is more than entitled to be an honorary sixth member. I watched a documentary about The Travelling Wilburys and the musical genius JL is regarded to be. Now you have to remember the song writing talent there was in the TW’s but if they were struggling to complete a song it is said that JL would stay up all night if needed, and when the others returned the next day the song would be complete. Fact or fiction I don’t know but I’m happy to believe it’s true! Now I’ve just read a comment to another YT video that says that on the recording it is actually JL playing bass and must never forget that amongst all his other talents Tom Petty was also a superb bassist.

Jeff Lynne is amazingly accomplished. I was surprised he played the bass on this instead of Howie, but it’s true

I didn't understand why bass players always seem to have more fun than others. In April I bought a bass and I understood.
