Starting at 2:48 is one of my favorite scenes in the movie because it shows just how much Norman cares about Peter. The goblin living in his mind no doubt wants to reach out and kill Peter right then and there but Norman makes a quick exit, hyper aware of what could very well happen if he sticks around. The internal power struggle is subtle but highly effective. And it’s one of if not the only time we see Norman’s heart and humanity overpower the goblin long enough to keep his friends and family safe.
Willem Dafoe's acting in this scene is absolutely on point in the way he shows Norman's persona constantly shifting between his and GG's. Never get in the way of Norman Osbourne & his pies. Its still one of the funniest things in this movie for me. If no one else was there, Aunt May would've been murdered
Willem Dafoe and James Franco have such chemistry in this movie. They really do a fantastic job at portraying the estranged father and son who love each other and admire one another but who have absolutely no communication of healthy relationship with one another.
4:06 : Harry : “You’re wrong about her Dad.” 4:25 MJ: (Sarcastically) “Thanks for sticking up for me Harry “ WOMAN WHAT DO YOU MEAN? HE JUST STOOD UP FOR YOU!

His father was *insulting her very bad* and basically called her a golddigger or wh*re! He was clearly a creep looking at her like that in front of his son (not only is he disrespecting Mary Jane also Harry as well). So MJ propably excepted more of a reaction (which is natural), because she felt embarrassed in front of Peter and his auntn. But she should have understand that Harry has an unhealthy relationship with his father, so expecting a strong reaction by him would be to much.
Norman's most offensive comment about MJ came after 4:06. Within the context of the scene, this is supposed to be where Norman and MJ meet for the first time, and within mere minutes Norman rudely walks out. He shutdowns Harry with insults about both his mother and MJ- effectively ruining the dinner. This along, with the rapidly escalating tension, leaves Harry aghast. MJ (having been within earshot of Norman's words) is both mortified and disgusted. She decides to leave, knowing that the situation cannot possibly get any more uncomfortable. The sarcasm that she directs at Harry is her way of taking out the anger she feels towards Norman.
@@paulgraves1392 I agree that Mary Jane is terrible written and only there for being eye candy. But people should not blame her in this scene, she had every right to be mad at an arrogant creepy man who basically called her a wh**e in front of her best friend and his aunt. She felt asshamed and Harry should understand that. And Mary Jane should have understand that expecting a strong reaction by Harry would be too much because he obviously has an unhealthy relationship with his father (who is supposed to be his role model).
Did anyone else notice that Norman creepily checks out MJ at 0:47, MJ notices and gives him a disgustful look, and Norman returns the look with a creepy smirk?
That was DEFINITELY intentional, they made sure to have several different shots for that. Norman WAS described as arrogant and egoistic in the newspaper he was reading, so he may have been a creep too?
Seen this movie millions of times and I never noticed that. I think I was always distracted by Aunt May in the background calling for Peter. That just goes to show there are so many little details in these movies I still have yet to notice.
I can tell Norman was genuinely upset when he founds out that Peter is Spider-Man as he sincerely loved and cared for Peter as he consider him a son.🥺😭😔

Rewatched this movie recently and i really saw how subtly they built the relationship between Peter and Norman with Norman respecting Peters love of science both when meeting him and when he won the science award at graduation and when peter turned down his job offer respecting peters desire to "make it on his own steam" then to have Norman loose it when he realized who peter was great build up by Raimi without explicitly stating anything
I just love how nervous Harry is in this scene. He cares so much about his father's approval and could hear nothing about him even though he knows Norman is wrong about mj. I mean the power he just pulls in his words defending his father, one moment he is all low and nervous, heart heavy about what his father just said and the second moment he goes all ballistic, "that creep is my father! And I'll be lucky to become half the man he is". Really solidifys how much Harry looked up to his father and this is really essential for him to become the hob goblin.
I actually love that in this scene they’re wearing clothes of the opposite colours than their suits. Norman is wearing blue and red while Peter green and purple
You do realize the film implies how people who shame women like this are assholes right? You somehow managed to be an incel, a classist, and misunderstand the film all at the same time.
Damn, I just realized at 3:40 how Norman's tone in voice and attitude change as he leaves the apartment. From being nervous and unsure to being cocky and angry. So when Harry speaks to Norman around 3:45.. he was speaking to the Goblin.
Yep. Same with the situation when Harry had his accident where he forgot his memory, he was so polite and happy but after he remembered what happened he literally changed his attitude instantly and had this angry vibe/facial expressions and talked different.
Bruh Norman is so weird in this scene. Who’s a guest in someone’s house and calls him a slob to his aunt and then sneaks a taste of the turkey before giving the blessing and licks their fingers sensually while staring at her?!
Calls Peter a slob, snoops around the bedroom, stares at MJ creepily, digs his fingers into the food and licks them, creeps out Aunt May, leaves abruptly, and calls MJ a hoe before doing so.
@@missyummy1040 Sandman felt more...underused than tragic. He definitely felt sympathetic, but he didn't do anything noteworthy other than become sandman, reveal that he was Uncle Ben's accidental murderer, and find forgiveness. If Sam Reimi could do over the third Spider Man, with more freedom, I feel like Sandman would have been more impactful because he wouldn't need to be compared to Venom but instead by the original main antagonist Kurt Connors, AKA The Lizard. Maybe he could even have his own movie, because he doesn't even necessarily have to be a second antagonist
Norman was 100% right about MJ, she had just kissed Spider-Man(who she had no clue was Peter), didn’t even wanna kiss Harry at the parade, not to mention she planned a dinner date with Peter and agreed with Peter when he said “don’t tell Harry”. It was obvious she wasn’t interested and lead him on.
Yeah but Norman could not know this, and at least at the beginning she was interested in Harry, but slowly changed his mind because of his awkwardness, heaviness and care of what his father could think. Anyway, Norman just looked for a reason to go away, to be an unwanted guest so he could leave
She basically cheated on everyone in the movies. In Spider-Man 2 she cheated on John Jameson and in Spider-Man 3 she cheated on Peter lol. This is from a short I watched.
Norman isn't wholly right about MJ. She is leading him on, but I don't think it's for money. Moreso she's probably flattered by the attention. But still, MJ doesn't love Harry.
He was right about MJ all along. She hops around from one guy to another more times than a female rabbit in heat. First Harry, then Spider-Man (upside down kiss), then Peter, then that other guy she was supposed to marry, then Peter again, then Harry again (cheats on peter) and then finally back to Peter. Safe to say, she's been passed around more times than a blunt.
“They're all beautiful...until they're snarling after your trust fund like a pack of ravening wolves!" The best thing about the insult was Norman was never wrong here. MJ ditched every boy she met in the trilogy one movie after the other
What are you talking about lol? MJ left Harry and Jameson’s astronaut son to be with broke ass Peter Parker. And she wanted to be with him even before she knew he was Spiderman. So it’s not cause he’s a super hero. Peter was being a piece of shit to her in the the third movie: never asking about her, kissing Gwen, making everything about himself and Spiderman. How can you say MJ was a gold digging whore?
Every character in this scene has a clear relationship or interaction with each other. There’s some amount of conflict within each. Really incredible stuff in such a short scene
The acting was great here, especially Defoe and Dunst. You see MJ's facial expressions show that she was offended and disappointed that Norman was so critical of her- especially since MJ has a poor relationship with her father, while Harry deeply admires his to the point he couldn't stand up to him.
You can’t really blame MJ and Harry for having daddy issues. MJ’s dad verbally abused her, Harry’s dad always neglects him for his company and secretly talks to his darker half. Peter is at least lucky that he never had to go through all that with his father before he died.
I can only imagine how hurt I would feel if I met my significant other's parents for the first time and they tell him that I'd only like them for shallow reasons. Also I love how Norman is being a hypocrite telling Harry MJ is into him for shallow reasons then tells him to be just as shallow and use her.
,@@hassanmasood186, infact Norman likes Peter more than his own son Harry, before becoming the goblin,he used to appreciate Peter for being a topper in the class and in science(I'm also a scientist by myself)as Harry was a stupid failure, dropout brat 😂
Has to do with its director. Sam Raimi is pretty good at making these kinds of vibes. He's also directing the next Doctor Strange so look for something similar.

@@YTWarrior100 nah I wouldn't take it that far. Andrew did a good job as spiderman. The problem with his movies is not him but the bad script and bad story.
I don't think she said that sarcastically. Although it did sort of sound like it, I don't think she was actually blaming Harry. He *did* stick up for her and she could clearly hear it. She was more mad at Norman.
I mean, Norman was right. Mary-Jane was off kissing Spiderman when she was with Harry and was dropping hints to Peter at the same time (who at the time she thought was a seperate person)
Now this is the comment I've been waiting for. Tobey and Andrew are the co stars in this movie. Its all about Aunt May. That shot of The Lizard getting roundhouse kicked by a ghost? Thats Aunt May swinging her purse. You go Auntie May, unleash the beast.
But that’s why he made a quick exit someone else mentioned in the comments saying he knew exactly what would happen if the goblin took over so he acted fast and made a quick exit
I like that they’re wearing each other’s colors Peter: Green (goblin) Norman: Blue and Red (spiderman) Harry: Red and Green (spiderman and goblin) Idk why they did this but it’s just cool to notice

@@paulgraves1392
I agree that Mary Jane is terrible written and only there for being eye candy.

I just love how nervous Harry is in this scene. He cares so much about his father's approval and could hear nothing about him even though he knows Norman is wrong about mj. You can’t really blame MJ and Harry for having daddy issues. MJ’s dad verbally abused her, Harry’s dad always neglects him for his company and secretly talks to his darker half. Peter is at least lucky that he never had to go through all that with his father before he died.
