Love the videos. Kirk got a question for you…. I’m going to be building a house on the Mendocino Coast in Gualala (border of Sonoma County). Would you even consider doing a project that far away from the Bay Area? It’s a Spanish revival style with stucco exterior and plaster interior. Not much stucco up there so not a plethora of experts in that area like yourself.
Hello my friend, I have been in that area a few times, but to work there would take 8 hours a day to and from. There'd be no time to work. Guys like us are a dime a dozen, google plastering contractors in your area.👨🏼🎨
No sorry, going back over 40 years, Larsons and Quikrete bonding agents were sold at all the professional plastering years, and still sold today. I have to stick with what's been tried and tested for longer than I've been alive, as I am responsible for the results or longevity.👨🏼🎨
@@pattypage9543 I recommend a boding agent for applying plaster over any substrate including all Sheetrock’s regardless of their skins. Home Depot or Lowe’s both sell Quikrete for about 15 bucks for a pint. Look at it as cheap insurance.
It doesn't matter what color the sheetrock or drywall is as long as it's prepared properly with an interior bonding agent painted on to the board such as Quikrete or Plaster-weld. Yes there are some boards that don't need bonding agents but that's another story.👨🏻🔬
Excellent question its volcanic ash, it's impervious to the elements like moisture, but still should not be applied outside where it can get rained on.Structo-Lite® Basecoat Plaster is USG's lightest and most highly insulated basecoat plaster and is ideal for locations where an aggregate is unavailable. Structo-Lite® Basecoat Plaster is mill-mixed, perlite-aggregate gypsum that weighs half as much as sanded basecoat plaster and provides thermal conductivity.👨🏫
I got a question: if someone screwed up and installed two different thicknesses of drywall, and removing the other size isnt possible, what would be the best way to bring the other part up to be flush, would mesh be recommended?
I’ve repaired different depths in sheet rock many times. On the hollow area, apply a bonding agent such as plaster-Weld and add more plaster. I’d recommend 20-minute joint compound to make both surfaces flush. It’s really easy, in fact I have videos showing how to.
Hello, no such thing as a silly question, primer is used before painting , to ensure the paint job last as long as possible. Stucco bonding agent are applied to the sheetrocked walls before any plastering or applied to exterior painted surfaces to ensure stucco finishes are permanent. Cheers.👨🏫
yes got that but referring to the primer stopping the water in plaster being sucked into the substrate to quickly not making good adhesion so wondering if you didn't have the plaster weld would priming do relatively the same thing hope that makes sense thanks@@StuccoPlastering
Kirk, Have you ever used Xypex in the cement mix? It's supposed to react with moisture to continuously fill out cracks in cement. One version comes as an additive to mix in. Curious if that could be used in a cementitious stucco or that Ekoplast 50.
Kirk on a different subject When mixing color into cementious smooth coat finish even after mixing Pigment into Water first It still doesn't fully desolve into the Finish is there a trick to get the color to fully desolve ?
Howdy numbers Dude, sounds to me like your paddle or speed is off. As I have not had this issue. Our technique for getting the accelerators or retardants to flow evenly throughout our mix is the same as yours, add it to water then pore evenly into the mixer as it spins.🕵️♂️
The trouble with Structolite and even Gypsolite is that they can have coarse perlite in one batch and very fine in another. Also will suck up the primer. You can show the texture on your sample boards by titling it a little for the light to glance across. If inside use a strong flashlight.
Howdy Eric, my fellow plasterer friend. I've not noticed this, however when as a rule I'm applying Structo-Lite, I'm going an inch or more thick. Next time brother, we will get the lighting just right. 🕵🏼
I have gone through a ton of your videos looking for veneer plaster on blue board. Very popular wall finish in parts of New England. Have you done it ?

I really like Structo-lite. I do historic lime plaster restoration in pre-Civil War homes in New York State. But whenever it comes to overhead plastering on wood lath, I switch to light weight Structo lite. Also if a relatively small area needs to dry fast, I use it. It looks very much like lime sand plaster when done as well complete with blemishes and tone. The fact that you can float/slurry the surface and then finish trowel extra smooth is nice too. I once worked for an architect who promised me Structo lite for the ceiling, and he delivered "Not Exactly Structo Lite" brand. Disappointing.....
USG like other big corps doctored structolite to render it useless. I remember you could by 98# bags and store them for use for at least a couple of years. Then they took 1/3 of the material quintupled the price and voila...here we are. Disgusting really. But us old timers know wtf is going on. Keep up the good work Kirk
Hi Gary, my fellow plasterer, The jury still out for me. I had a lot stored past the 6 month date, I used it, it accelerated too fast and was weak. But I forgot the disadvantages of keeping plasters too long. Thanks for your opinion, as us old timers do indeed know whats up.🕵🏼

I would like to know how to install the lap siding step bead and apply the stucco to mimic real siding on my masonry exterior walls (I currently have light texture stucco directly apply on blocks -no mesh). Any help or information on how to do it would be appreciated. Thank you :)
Hello Jessica, no, I have not applied stucco to give the look of shiplap siding. Nor have I been asked to do this, Sorry. This guy does it, try calling him. Raymond Seijas Plaster Inc. Cheers.🕵🏼
Thanks for the mention, Kirk! I didn't hear you say how long after the born-on date that the Structo-Lite or even the Diamond veneer is good for, but I wanted the folks to know. When you see the born-on date, just know that it's good for SIX MONTHS. After that, it's not going to perform as intended. So glad you did that video! Thanks again for the mention!
Hello Military girl, you should be a journalist. Excellenta tips.👨🏼🎨
Back again, I did mention, ‘the born o n date,’ perhaps not as clear as I should have, but included it. On another note, I see your in a location called, Fallbrook, I googled that area and feel my family and I should relocate to this pleasant area. Cheers.😉
@@StuccoPlastering yes! Get here! One of the ONLY true Mediterranean climates in California. We were the "Avocado Capital of the World" until water restrictions jacked up many of our groves. But I still have them in my yard! LOL! Housing is much cheaper than anywhere in CA (we're about 11 miles from the ocean - as the crow flies). LOTS of stucco work for you guys! We are part of San Diego County, so our rules are less restrictive than the City of San Diego and we have REALLY low property taxes. (our 3,100 Sq ft house on just under 1/2 acre) is about $5,800 per year. Fallbrook allows for ocean breezes so it never stays too hot or too cold. Right now you can get a house between 2,500 sq ft - 3,000 sq ft for around $850K and it includes about a 1/2 acre of land or more. People are nice, many of us are over 50 yrs old, so it's pretty quiet. Great restaurants. It's the place to be! Maybe at least buy a vacation house here! You won't be sorry Kirk!
Howdy again military girl, it’s about a year later, I notice you don’t post much these days. Or I would have found you sooner. My wife and I have decided on your area for our final destination. It took a year of visiting places near and far.
Any how you mentioned you may know folks selling, my personal e- mail is kirkgiordano@gmail.com. We would like the opportunity to talk with you again if you have time. My home phone is 510 521-954. I know you’re a busy person, but if you have the time call or write. I’ll provide my cell number but can’t hear for many reasons. We are contacting some realtors also, however who we pay a commission too is not important to us, I’d rather it be you as you were very kind and caring. Best wishes to you. Kirk giordano plastering.
Great video. How is structolite different than regular thin set plaster? Will thin set plaster take that same sponge finish intstead of trowel?
Good question, Structo-Lite is volcanic ash or perlite, Lime plaster is crushed lime, that when water is added, it becomes limestone again🕵🏼
@@StuccoPlastering Thanks! Now I see that it is the perlite grains that get dragged with the float to create the "worm" texture.
Ever use Tammsweld bonding agent? It is my new favorite!
No sorry, going back over 40 years, Larsons and Quikrete bonding agents were sold at all the professional plastering years, and still sold today. I have to stick with what's been tried and tested for longer than I've been alive, as I am responsible for the results or longevity.👨🏼🎨
Can I use structo lite directly on the wood, for venetian plaster
Not really, as wood expands in the heat. Thus, any taping mud or plaster will pop right off. I learned this the hard way about 35 years ago. Cheers
You don't wanna get your girl up against the wall Mexican style with this finish, she'll never forgive you. 😁 howdy Kirk.
Yea, she would remember that day for sure.🕺🏽
Good stuff.
Glad you enjoyed it
I always learn something
Howdy Jeff, excellenta.👨🏼🎨
Will the plaster stick to a painted wall.I need to make the wall flat to use roman clay. Basically get rid of the texture
@@pattypage9543 I recommend a boding agent for applying plaster over any substrate including all Sheetrock’s regardless of their skins. Home Depot or Lowe’s both sell Quikrete for about 15 bucks for a pint. Look at it as cheap insurance.
How about exterior brown board as the base on exterior, or you have another alternative ❤
It doesn't matter what color the sheetrock or drywall is as long as it's prepared properly with an interior bonding agent painted on to the board such as Quikrete or Plaster-weld. Yes there are some boards that don't need bonding agents but that's another story.👨🏻🔬
Why is it used in high humidity environments?
@@StuccoPlastering thanks, I'll try to find the video
Do you tape the joints first
Yes,👨🏻🔬
sorry for the silly question but primer would suffice without the bondeing agent or does the bonding agent act as a primer as well? thanks🖖
Kirk,
Have you ever used Xypex in the cement mix? It's supposed to react with moisture to continuously fill out cracks in cement. One version comes as an additive to mix in.
Curious if that could be used in a cementitious stucco or that Ekoplast 50.
Hello sorry, I have not used it, thus can't comment on it.👨
Kirk on a different subject When mixing color into cementious smooth coat finish even after mixing Pigment into Water first It still doesn't fully desolve into the Finish is there a trick to get the color to fully desolve ?
Mainly I'm using it for it's sound and fireproofing abilities. Now that folks know, this method of providing walls that are cool looking and maintenance free. We may get called to do this finish.🕵🏼
It really helps to see things with light.Like move your truck a bit so the sun is on the subject? Ah light? Nice slang lingo but light would help to see. That's how people see things.
Good point, however sometimes one has to use a bit of imagination. We're stucco guys first, not professional videographers. I guess I could hire professionals out for about a couple thousand dollars a day! No wait, my jet plane has payments that are too high to spend that kind of dough on. Next time brother, we will get the lighting just right. 🕵🏼
I have a? What would be the best product for inside my house iwant to do a Santa Barbara type finish your feed back would be greatly appreciated
Hi Jamie, I'd recommend, "Image," by la Habra, it's an acrylic stucco that works well for interior or exterior smooth finishes.
Greatly appreciate the info y'all are truly professional craftsman you and your family me and my son's are big fans
I have gone through a ton of your videos looking for veneer plaster on blue board. Very popular wall finish in parts of New England. Have you done it ?
I just apply the lime plaster; if there is blueboard I go over it. If it's just regular sheetrock, we apply a bonding agent over the sheetrock to apply the Lime Plaster. ruclips.net/video/P-MYIWu6hLg/видео.html/ Lime plastering over Blueboard sheetrock or drywall.

Correctomundo, Jason, you must be a plasterer or a detective?🕵🏼
Noted: Don’t wrestle near the worm finish Structolite 😄
At least not naked, or you'll end up with road rash.👨🏼⚕️
Same reason the trade has gotten away from knockdown on the walls not ideal for residential
Good evening Doug, I know a lot of plasterers that have this finish in their homes, for the reason that it's simple to apply, It's cool looking, and never needs to be redone. It is rough to the touch and difficult to clean, but we are not supposed to be cleaning walls. 🕵️♂️
I can never see the texture in your videos. New camera might help.
Thank you for videos. Amaxing knowledge, just wish the new videos didnt look as grainy as 15 years ago.
Good evening, Turbo Dude. I haven't heard this before. Are you sure it's not something to do with your computer's settings? Are there others out there with this same experience? 🤔
Lack of detail except for the moments where the camera dude zooms in.
I am showing 720p on this video.
@@turboflush My son Jay films our work at 1080. I’m not sure what that means but is supposed to be clear. 🤔
@@StuccoPlastering maybe the upload is lower? Maybe another youtuber can check theirs. It also seems to be the lighting. Like the camera can't adjust correctly.
@@turboflush your the first to say so, perhaps it’s your computer? Either way I’m just an applicator.
Its hard to find unless your at a plastering yard such as "Westside Building Materials"
@@StuccoPlastering Attention Westside Building Materials- Kirk just gave you guys a plug !
I an going to buy some fresh stuff this week and experiment on video to test again as USG, is a major player that wouldn't benefit from milking their name in the long run. Thanks for your opinion, as us old timers do indeed know whats up.🕵🏼
What happens if you take the P’ out of a pirate...?
He becomes irate!
Arg, just don't get on the Pirate Ship while in Puerto Vallarta, I'm still having bathroom issues.😉
Hey man, I don’t care about the plaster I just want to go to PV-lol!!
Uncle Steve, My baby and I went there last month but only for 5 days,. Thus the innards of this video. We are looking in the San Pancho or what is called the San Fransisco area at this time, When we have time, good hearing from you, my friend. 👨🏫
Thick paint softens some of the sharpnes.
Raw.. it does hurt. Lol
Howdy Turbo Dude, that is what I tell folks also. Cheers.

Cool beans, Daddieo👨🏼🎨
I used to buy a product called "interior fast finish" and it was all i had used and when it was discontinued i was like Noooooooo
@@lostpony4885 that’s a bummer all right, like the Red Devil Lime patching. It was like speading butter, perfect for interior crack repairs and it flexed.
Actually fell out of bed in Mexico, skinned my forehead right on that wall so can confirm, it will take the skin right off you.
Hi Matthew, I have applied this to my own home on the ceilings as one can't get scratched from it up there. I had too many kids who like to wrestle so couldn't do my walls.👨🏼🎨
Would not want this finish in a kitchen or bathroom.
We all have choices.
I think it's a horrible finish. Why would anyone want that versus a nice smooth surface. Anyway good skills and plastering and presentation, just don't know why that type of style would be popular.
Hello, my friend from Ireland; in the description, I added a video that shows what this worm finish looks like up close, as this sample and the walls at the Condo didn't do it justice. ruclips.net/video/nP5BBkxM8v0/видео.html/
Also, as far as textures, there’s no limit to textures, except with someone’s lack of imagination.👨🏫
Super popular finish in Australia
Good evening Breny Boy, it's extremely popular all over the world. When I go places, I notice it on most hotels, high-rises and other monster building as its easy, and gives a really cool looking unique look, and never needs painting, What developer does not want that?🕵️♂️
In mexico they call it "Duroplas" its a mexican brand but almost the same as Structo-lite, but the timing has to be in a running mode.
@@user-ly1ty8hy8q Sounds like an excellent material.
Rough as hell 😂😂
It's not so rough, unless you fall on it with bareskin, then it's the boss🕵️♂️
