It always depends on how he handles it. Sometimes it's great, "you may have thought this was the obvious choice, bit here's why this option fits better in my opinion and here's why this other option doesn't", but other times it's just snarkily responding to future complainers by thrashing their likely objection, which may or may not be as engaging (not to mention probably emotionally taxing for Tulok).

A neat feature of this build Tulok didn’t really bring up is that whenever your Int score goes up you can prepare an additional Artificer spell, and you can swap those around on a long rest. So by level 20 you can have any six first level spells from the Artificer list prepared, kinda like how the Doctor will often prepare plans or gadgets that he uses to fix whatever situation he finds himself in.
If you’re expecting a big fight build a personal force field generator and some medpacks (False Life and Cure Wounds), if you’re breaking into a tower to rescue someone make a hologram projector and an anti-gravity device (Disguise Self and Feather Fall, maybe Jump as well) Even just the first level Artificer give you a good amount of versatility, and you could use your higher level Bard spell slots to upcast some spells like Cure Wounds

Theoretically speaking, having the doctor in the party is a good failsafe to keep the campaign going if there's a TPK.
The doctor cannot die, he can reincarnate, and he can bring along whatever critical knowledge with him to the new party immediately and without issue, maybe even including the location of the last party's now fallen gear.
Also, the doctor will never be a true threat to any of your BBEGs, he's a pacifist, so in addition to keeping the campaign going and helping keep your party alive he's not going to unexpectedly murder your main villains in a bar fight.
Unless you're not careful enough to give them some resistances or comparable stats... then the doctor could, theoretically, talk his way into being the new emperor and derail absolutely everything..

I was going to object that while you're right about the Doctor barely ever chosing to resort to violence he is in fact shown to be an excellent fencer, swordsman and martial artist (Venusian Aikido iirc, despite having significantly fewer limbs than the creators of the fighting style). And an Artificer/Wizard might technically make for a more powerful character. But all of that is nitpicking. This might be my favourite video of yours and the Doctor is the quintessential bard - half rogue, half wizard, all Charisma. Everyone who encounters the Doctor loves him or is annoyed to death, quite often literally. From the choice of Race to the spell selection I did not expect such an accurate build was possible. (Tennant's Transformation even fixes my silly first complaint ^^) The only actual change I would like to recommend is taking Vicious Mockery at Bard 1, it is the Doctor's signature move after all.
While I don't want to start an argument about favourite Doctors, I just can't stop myself from also sharing that I am, against all odds, hoping to see Tilda Swinton take on the role. That would be a dream come true!

    • @robertwinslade3104

I LOVE Discworld but i don't think D&D is the right system for building characters from that world; most Discworld characters would probably be pretty low level in D&D terms except maybe the wizards, but their magic works very differently to d&d magic; on the Disc magic is extremely dangerous and can go wrong in spectacular ways; d&d doesn't really have rules for that.
If I were to try to make Rincewind though I would probably go for straight Wild Magic Sorcerer; only taking spells to enhance his ability to run fast and escape people like Expeditious Retreat, Haste, Feather Fall etc. and just reflavour them as either his natural ability to run fast or The Spell interfering. Eventually you would want to take Wish. Also he would be varient human with the Lucky feat

    • @The_Crimson_Witch
      @The_Crimson_Witch 3 года назад +4

@@robertwinslade3104 Also focus on constitution and dexterity heavily. I know it seems odd as he can't actually take a hit much, but there is another way to look at constitution. Hitpoints don't just represent how much punishment you can take, but also how lucky you are. As such, high constitution=higher hp= higher amount of luck. Rincewind is lucky as hell XD
Sorcerer fits him perfectly due to its limited spell options. However, I wouldn't say *straight* wild magic sorcerer. I will not admit my memory of the discworld books is shakey as it's been around a decade since I last read one, buuuuut IIRC the biggest spells rincewind can cast he got by reading a forbidden book that planted itself in his head (which is partially why he's such a shit wizard, the spell he got from the book was so big he couldn't fit anything else in his head). Now this is admittedly hard to mimick, and does fit into the sorcerer flavour perfectly, but mechanically warlock might actually be better. What patron he'd be is hard to nail down exactly, as I can see arguments for hexblade, undead and undying (my spine shivers in mention of the last), but I actually think great old one (or ones in this case) will be the closest we're gonna get. The collective voices of mages past speaking to you from the tome you read. Pact of the tome for your pact boon. I'd argue for at most 3 levels sorcerer and 9 levels warlock.
Invocations are tricky, but book of ancient secrets helps you still feel like a wizard without actually being one.
Gift of the protectors lets you get just that little bit of extra luck (seeing as nothing says you can't write your own name in the book)
Trickster's escape will explain how Rincewind somehow seems to keep getting out of deep shit
Armor of ~~plot~~ Ahem, sorry shadows lets you get lady luck on your side yet again to duck out of another spiral towards doom.
Beguiling Presence shows how Rincewind learns to fast talk as time goes on, (I'm stretching a bit but let's be honest there's not a fantastic amount Rincewind is good at XD)
Finally Aspect of the Moon. Given how often he's just running away, I doubt he gets much time to sleep. Living like that for so long doesn't make you crazy, that'd be ridiculous, no it obviously makes you no longer need sleep!
No, what about the other 8 levels? Good question nobody asked, I'll happily answer it! Honestly, rogue fits him the best I think. Either thief or swashbuckler. I can see an argument for a full rogue with magic initiate given just how little spellcasting Rincewind actually does. But that's up to personal preference, I can't actually remember which would be more accurate. Anyway, expertise in arcana and history, he may not be able to cast a lot of spells, but he's not an idiot and is actually often the one giving exposition. At 6th level expertise in deception and persuasion. Again, gotta talk fast! For the extra skill take stealth or slight of hand (that's right, we're not starting with rogue because Rincewind doesn't deserve 4 skills :D)
And that's the best I can think of. For ABI's, focus on DEX CHA and CON, really only picking up the tough feat (for luck on top of luck on top of luck). You could use point buy and put CON and DEX at 15 (using variant human to get them both to 16), 14 CHA, 10 WIS, and 8 in INT and STR. Luck, luck and more luck. Using ABI's, you could cap off CON and get DEX to 18 with the last one going to tough. Or just get both to 20. It hurts not capping off your casting modifier when 12 levels are caster levels, but as has been established rincewind is shit with spells XD
Sorry for the essay, I really like this sort of stuff.

    • @TheRawrnstuff
      @TheRawrnstuff 3 года назад

No class feature that I'm aware of gives you a ship. Paladins get to summon a steed, though.
The phaser-esque weapon could be an artillerist artificer's wand, the Sacred Flame cantrip to ignore enemy cover with radiant damage, or the ol' reliable Fire Bolt cantrip.
The eldritch blast requires several attack rolls as you gain more bolts, so it feels a bit too much like "fanning the hammer" to feel like Kirk to me.
My first instinct would be a Fighter/Cleric multiclass; Sacred Flame for the ranged attack, and unarmed fighting as the fighting style.
Despite being a bit of a disappointment, I think Purple Dragon Knight subclass would suit Kirk in terms of flavor beautifully.
For the cleric, I'm leaning towards the Order domain, but those benefits also have several that overlap with the PDK fighter.
Maybe one can convince the DM to give the character an airship on the basis that they're losing out on so many levels, compared to smarter builds. 🤔

    Rise of the Guardians
Now that The Wild Beyond the Witchwilds is out, we have Fairies and Harengons, as well as MiM recruitment in the Feylost background.
_Nicholas St. North,_ Guardian of Wonder: Mark of Passage Human, Cavalier Fighter and Celestial Blade Warlock. He needs mounted combat on flying reindeer, teleportation snow-globes, and the Feylost background so that Fey Yeti-substitutes will come to his aid. Note: even if a Steel Defender can serve as a Mount and use Winged Boots Infusion, I don’t think the multiclass into Cavalier allows enough spell levels to get Teleportation Circle.
_Toothiana,_ Guardian of Memories: Hummingbird Fairy (Fey Characteristic 1, 2, and maybe 7), College of Eloquence Bard and either Circle of the Shepherd Druid or Soulknife Rogue. A normally gentle and excitable being, Tooth protects the memories of childhood joy, and returns them in times of self doubt. She either fights alongside her MiniFairies, or as a Rogue with memory enhanced abilities.
_Sanderson Mansnoozie,_ Guardian of Dreams: Halfling, Swarmkeeper Ranger and Arcane Trickster Rogue. A master with the whip, Sandy prefers to give everyone pleasant dreams and speak through his Sand Swarm shapes.
_E. Aster Bunnymund,_ Guardian of Hope: Harengon, Shadow Monk and Bladesinger Wizard, with a Feat for Heroism. An Aussie Hugh Jackman with a tight ship to run, Bunnymund is near impossible to catch, fighting with his Boomerangs and Earth Elementals.
_Jack Frost,_ Guardian of Fun: Protector Aasimar (he needs flight), Arctic Druid and Trickery Domain Cleric. Master of the north wind and lover of pranks, Jack brings the school-canceling snow day. With his charm, he can turn even the biggest of bullies into new friends, and your greatest fears into something funny.
    And of course:
_Pitch Black,_ The Boogeyman: Kalashtar, College of Whispers Bard, and I want to say either Vengeance Paladin or Illusionist Wizard. Master of manipulation and the silver tongue, Pitch prefers to strike using Nightmares and fear. Without fear, he is weak.

@@dracowolf3212 In the film, he was mobile, really hard to hit, proficient with simple weapons and unarmed strikes, took no damage from high falls… That’s Monk. Also, while Shepherds can summon his little eggs and giant Stone Elemental eggs, he can’t take Protection from Evil and Good, Haste, and Banishment (burrow trap substitute).
I couldn’t give him his burrowing speed, so I found a Monk subclass that gave Pass without Trace, Invisibility (adults can’t see him), and a 60’ teleport (replace burrows with shadows).
Tooth could be a Swarmkeeper. But it made more sense for Sandy, since his body and projections are his own sand for a Swarm, which gives him flight and hover. Also, she is gentle mother of the group, which leans Shepherd. Finally, I didn’t want to overlap subclasses, or classes if I could avoid it.

@@LocalMaple Pitch Black would definitely be a College of Whispers Bard, but if you're going for fear, I think Conquest Paladin would work better than Vengeance if you want Pally levels. Since Aura of Conquest is pretty good.

    • @LocalMaple
      @LocalMaple 3 года назад

@@krimsonkarma8412 I chose Vengeance for several reasons.
      Their Channel Divinity causes Fear.
Bane is basically an unnerving spell.
Misty Step is his shadow fading ability substitute.
And we hit our goals within the subclass at a lower level, allowing more Bard levels.
But I will admit, I looked into Conquest. It is in line with his goals as well, if he considers Vengeance against Good an acceptable vow.
It also gets Fear, a fear divinity, and a Spiritual Weapon (a sub for his Nightmare Scythe), and Dominate Beast if we want a Nightmare mount.
Conquest is a more Paladin Pitch, while Vengeance is a more Bard Pitch. And I wanted him to be more of the frail backliner he is; hence my consideration of Illusionist Wizard.

I'm surprised you went bard. I shouldn't be at this point, but I was. I thought there would be a level of Warlock so the T.A.R.D.I.S. could be his Great Old Ones patron (she sends him where he /needs/ to go, after all, not where he /wants/ to go), and this helps out with the telepathic powers and the pact of the chain familiar - K9! I was definitely right on my assumption that the Doctor was going to be a bard (more specifically, an eloquence bard, I was even right with that), but instead of having him take that one level of artificer, I thought he was going to multiclass into wizard (I would've chosen the school of divination over the chronologist), but I was also shamefully debating over sorcerer (either wild mage or clockwork soul). The Doctor's main shtick is to persuade and on several occasions BS his way out of risky situations without getting his hands dirty. A sorcerer or wizard would have some support spells, sure, but they also have a vast array of destructive spells, and the last thing we want to do is cause a butterfly effect.

My most beloved character was inspired by the Doctor. I'm not even a huge Doctor Who fan, a casual watcher at best, but I was watching at thevtine I started this character (10 years ago now) and the personality of a clever, playful pacifist bled in.
He's just a Half-Elf illusionist wizard named Aulin that tries to resolve thing without killed (he doesn't always succeed though.) Favourite spells include Mirror Image, Colour Spray, Hold Person, Confusion, Alter Memory, Sleep, Haste and any 'image' spell that lets him falsify reality. He also commonly employs a wide array of barrier and protection spells. There is not a single damage dealing spell in his book and he's gone on to become the most renowned of all heroes in my regular DM's world. His story is long over, but he regularly pops up other games as a mentor, teacher and quest giver.
One time my DM nesrly crushed my heart by making us fight an insane, evil version of my beloved character. I was legitimately sad that the LG, wholesome, try to save everyone and do the right thing hero had fallen. Joyously, it was revealed after his defeat that he was actually a Simulacrum of Aulin that he put in place to protect the realm should anything ever happen to the original. The copy had been corrupted by a nemesis of Aulin's, imprisoned his creator n a magical demiplane and sought to purify the land by genocide, and starting fresh under his perfect leadership. The best part was, Aulin had always had an arrogant streak so it was a believable fall from grace for him. And Aulin returned at the last minute to beg us not to kill his evil copy. Because he was a victim, a thinking being created to be a servant and corrupted by the true villain.

Another route to ensuring you never fail a Charisma check is to swap out that single level of Artificer with 3 levels of Fey Wanderer Ranger. It's still an 18th level caster, gives a handful of great low level utility spells, more expertise, more skills, and you add Wis to all Cha checks on top of all the other nonsense Eloquence Bard gives you. If you're willing to forego 9th level spells all together 3 levels of Inquisitive Rogue is a great way to symbolize the intelligence of the Doctor in game mechanics terms.
All of these, and taking Martial Adept for the Commanding Presence and tactical Assessment maneuvers stack really nicely on top of the skill check chicanery Reborn starts off with.
Really the main thing Artificer gives you is using a tool as an arcane focus. If your DM is open to generous interpretations of the proficiency swap rules in the first 2 pages of Tasha's there's no reason why you can't trade out the 3 instrument proficiencies Bard gives you for other tool proficiencies and use the Bard's spellcasting focus trait on them instead.

I 100% AGREE WITH BARD! The Doctor is a Wizard with words, talks his way through almost everything, and is f***ing brilliant! I love this build!

Thank you! I've been hoping for this build for a while now. And, yes, I was thinking wizard. This is so much better!

I think the only way you could kinda get a Tardis in the loosest sense would be through Genie Warlock or by getting Magnificent Mansion.
