Pau was the NBA Rookie of the Year in 2002, being the first non-American player to have won that award. Internationally, Gasol has won a FIBA World Cup title, three EuroBasket titles, two Olympic silver medals, and an Olympic bronze medal with the Spanish national basketball team. Gasol was named MVP of the 2006 FIBA World Cup, and MVP of the 2009 and 2015 FIBA EuroBasket. Pau Gasol shares with Krešimir Ćosić the record for most EuroBasket MVP awards, with two each. Gasol is also the all-time leading scorer in the EuroBasket. All this gives him a career that no other European basketball player has had in the NBA. He is a Hall of Fame player without any discussion.
hearing perk respect pau after those battles from 08 on talk GAME etc is very bittersweet and heartfelt Pau was going in the paint and finishing strong vs perk and KG which rarely gets brought up as much as i feel it should....add dwight too to the equation.
Pau Gasol was already a great player when he played for the Grizzlies, but he became the perfect match with Kobe in Los Angeles. We should not overlook the enormous influence Pau on those Lakers teams; getting him transformed an already rising team into a legit Championship contender *immediately,* with three straight finals appearances and two titles to validate Pau's presence. It's also clear that the brotherly love between the two players was genuine and strong, and it brings tears to see Pau still in pain over Kobe's tragic passing, as it shows the bond the two men had and, as Pau expressed, the unfairness of that bond being broken so suddenly. As Perk and Shelburne rightly said, Gasol's a no-brainer as a first-ballot HOF inductee, and I believe that both the Lakers and Grizzlies organizations should recognize his excellence by retiring his jersey. A splendid career!
Pau is so underrated . Honestly I think that Lakers team that they had from 2008 through 2011 is drastically underrated. They went to the finals three years in a row and walked away with back-to-back championships. And all people covering the NBA could talk about was LeBron James going to the Miami Heat. I’m glad that people are giving that team their props now and I am so glad to hear that Pau’s Jersey is being retired at the staple center because it’s deserved. Kobe said that years ago that he deserves to have his number retired because without him they don’t win those two championships. Kobe without a doubt was the MVP of those two championships but Pau just as important. The only thing that I think kind of sucks is that it took Kobe dying for people to start looking at that team because I remember as a Lakers fan watching ESPN the next day and it was kind of just like a footnote that each show would maybe spend 2 to 3 minutes on talking about and you would think they were talking about a college wrestler that had just won a match. that’s how much sports media didn’t care and they were just ready to crown a new king without even understanding that the Lakers were happening right then and they are in the present.
Thank you Pau. You brought trophies to the city of Los Angeles. You will be remembered as the Unstoppable Spaniard of the Lakers. It was great watching him play with the great late Kobe Bryant
