This comment section gives me hope. True hoop fans know that Pau needs to be recognized for the greatness he displayed especially during his multiple championship runs. I don't care how it's done but give the man his flowers.
The fact that Keyshawn a suppose laker fan had to think about if Pau Gasol deserves his jersey to be retired just shows he doesn’t watch basketball
He’s made because he isn’t black 😅
His takes are so bad. Painful to listen to
@@danielchyko1654 He is the worst, why is he even talking hoops? He doesn’t watch the NBA! Let him talk NFL only!
I have just come across this video & it honesty hurts. If you have to think, as a Lakers fan, if Pau Gasol deserve's his number retired, you aren't a Lakers fan. #16
I‘m so glad he‘s finally getting his jersey retired. It was long overdue
Well not long overdue I mean the guy JUST retired lol but yeah it's a no-brainer despite what some ignorant fans are saying
Well deserved, thanks pau for helping Kobe win those 2 rings b being a great god father to his family, we love you dawg 🙏🏿🫶🏿👏🏿
Kobe always said theres no two championships without Pau Gasol.
He deserves it. Pau was always underrated due to his scoring stats because Kobe scored so much, but he was the perfect partner for Kobe after Shaq left.
He deserves to be in the hall of fame!!!
I think this has more to do with how close he was to Kobe and him passing away. People forget they were trying to make Bynum the 2nd option and pushing Gasol to 3rd and that's actually when the team started going downhill.
@@solzocarter540 no he dont
Hall of fame. He couldn't make the top 75 line up stop it. I'm a laker fan and he ain't that.
@@chucktee8088 I never said HOF. We're talking about a retired number, do try and keep up. 🤦
Pau had a very deep understanding of the game and that allowed him to connect with Kobe better than Shaq ever could. He was nowhere near as talented but was one of the most skilled bigs up to that point. Great footwork, a very good spot up midrange, insane handle and passing ability for his size, great positioning for rebounds, knew how to set screens and work from the pick and roll / pick and pop and he made his freethrows. Definitely got the most out of his physical abilities, just like Kobe.

Well deserved thank u Pau u saved lakers legacy u kobe,Odom, and Bynum were so clutch for us 06-2010💛💜
Pau deserves it. He was the man for us. So vital to our two championships during that run. Congrats to Gasol. I would probably say D-Fish is next.
Derek Fisher? Lakers do not retire just any jersey. If you want Fisher, let's just retire Horry, Fox, Odom, Van Exel, Divac ... and heck let's throw in Kwame Brown.
@@thekububeach I’d be down for Harry, Fox and Odom. They were vital to our championship runs. Van Exel, Divac and Brown didn’t win anything. Just my personal opinion. D-Fish was there for all of Kobe’s title runs. 5 rings, all with Lakers. He’d have a jersey in the rafters in my book.
@@lboog081284 are you serious dude? Do you know which jersey that the Lakers hang up there? Do you really believe those players are on the same level with the likes of Kareem, Wilt, Magic, Kobe, Shaq, Worthy, West? And do you know that Lakers will only retire the jersey of players who are Hall of Famers too?
@@lboog081284 you can't just say someone was vital to a run and than retire their jersey. It ain't that easy
Only All time Laker greats allowed.

Pau definitely deserves this. Lamar Odom was a BIG time role player for those teams as well. Doesn't get a jersey retired but should be remembered on those teams.

Yes Pau was a top 10 player during the championship seasons.
I’m from Massachusetts and Pau Gasol is one of my favorite basketball players
Pau’s passing and ability to read defense was perfect for that system
He deserves it.
For everybody that says he doesnt:
Without him the Lakers where a 50/50 team. Just a bad team. 8th seed, 1st round sweeept team. Pau joins. 3 straight finals with 2 titles. Thats because of Pau. Of course Kobe was the best player of that team. But he was the copilot of a REPEAT. Not the 3rd option, not a contributor. But the second best player and the piece that turned that team from a trash team into a 2 time champions.....
He deserves it.
They got more then just pau at that time ,Artest and Odem weren't scrubs
That’s not what he’s saying. Everyone knows that you need roll players .
Though I definitely agree he's an easy hall of famer and jersey retirement candidate, your statement does need a bit of context and correction. The Lakers didn't get swept before Pau and right before he joined they were 30-16 (65% win percentage.. 53 win pace). Bynum especially was getting better until he got injured like mid January when the Lakers were either the #1 or #2 seed. No need to play down the Lakers to credit Pau because his career speaks for itself.
It wasnt that black and white. Bynum became at the time a great center, being conpared to dwight howard, phil jackson was back, lamar odom.
I remember the season Pau arrived, the Lakers dynamic totally changed. No wonder they went to 3 finals straight. His jersey deserves to be right next to 24.
I was so happy to hear this news because Pau Definitely deserves it. Look no player is perfect I get that and I’m glad he’s getting his flowers now. I think there was a time where people were being too hard on him and they were focusing on the negatives and no one looked at all the Great stuff you brought to the Lakers. If you go back and watch the Lakers in the 2009 and 2010 playoffs there were games in different series where Kobe was having an off night but it didn’t matter if the Lakers didn’t skip a beat because if Kobe had an off night every single time in those two playoff seasons Pau stepped up and was the best player of the game. If you were watching the Lakers before they got him on the team and after it was like night and day difference. Now you had two threats on the team were before Kobe was getting doubled and triple teamed because Kobe was the only option. The great Kobe Bryant said it himself “ without Pau we don’t get those last two championships”. If he was an important enough player on the team that his contributions lead to two championships then it’s a no-brainer this guy deserves to be listed and respected like the rest of the Laker greats .
Him and Tim Duncan were the best passing PF’s I’ve seen
Pau was the forerunner to Jokic for sure. He was always so well rounded and under appreciated by a lot of people

Super underated and also they were nothing without pau Bynum was injured and a huge piece of those titles
We beat 08 Boston if Bynum was atleast 75% healthy in my opinion. That 20+ pt lead lost in LA still hurts lol
@@me3ksdagoat279 hmm no they were too soft and Celtics were on it.
Pau was tough!!! You could tell in those finals he wanted it as much as Kobe
I see ABSOLUTELY NOTHING wrong with it. Well deserved 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
It's about time he's very deserving 👏
Definitely deserves it, kinda long overdue. 💯💯He is on the Mount Rushmore of all time great Grizzles for sure. Grizzles need to gone retire his jersey, if they already have.🤔🤔
They haven't and probably won't tbh. His brother played here longer and won more. Pau had most of his success in a Lakers uni
He was drafted by the Grizzles and made an all star appearance(s) before he was traded to the Lake show, so I don't see why not. Big mistake if the Grizzles don't retire his jersey.
So deserving. Love Pau. Wish he’d work with Zubac from the Clippers, plays a lot like him.
A lot of people kinda dismiss Pau off. Arguably, he was the perfect second foil for that 2009-10 Championship Lakers behind Kobe. Silent, low key yet efficient and effective.
Pau averaged 1.6 blocks a game for his career. Max gotta do better research. He wasn’t the defender AD is but he was always a rim protector and solid rebounder.
He also averages 2 blocks a game at 35 on the bulls when they made the playoffs
Absolutely deserved. Laker legend
SHAQ & Pau 💜💛🏀 Kobe had a special dynamic wit these 2 on the court. 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆💯
The Gasol trade was the momentum the Lakers needed and they rode that momentum to back to back championships.
Pau was a beast !!
It’s been a long time coming!!!
Love that he’s getting his jersey retired. Next year the lakers should consider Derek Fisher #2. Kobe and Shaq had a solid PG that played a huge role in those 5 championship.
he was definitely a shot blocker Max.
There’s been a few great centers for the Lakers, but not as many power forwards. Could it be argued Pau is the best Laker power forward?
AD career aint done
james worthy my guy is the best and anthony davis shouldnt even be talked about lol
@@thehollistichealthmonster5993 stop it Worthy was always hidden behind Magic and Kareem we all seen what was Worthy when he had to carry the Lakers on his own he's very over rated
@@thehollistichealthmonster5993 Wasn’t James Worthy a small forward? AD might have the better skill set, but not as effective nor successful. But I’ll be fair and say that’s due to availability
So far he got them 2 but I’d take a prime a.d over him.
Pau was the Peyton manning of big men, one of the most brilliant minds to ever grace the court
That man Keyshawn said he had to think about 😂😂😂 he couldn’t have watched the lakers when they went to 3 straight finals 🤡🤡🤡

Pau had a collection of skill, finesse and intelligence which was rare back in the day.
Yes! It’s only fitting that they do it at the game here in Memphis. We love him and Marc here. This is the type of person Pau is: when he was 11 and Magic Johnson announced his diagnosis, he wanted to become a doctor and find a cure for AIDS. He actually went to medical school, but dropped out for FC Barcelona.
Is it at Memphis are in La ???

We love you Pau!!!!!!!!!! ❤
Idk man as soon as they traded for him they made the finals lol he was that good
he was just a perfect fit, their pick and roll with Kobe and Pau made alot of mismatches that freed up other players like Artest etc. not only Pau can roll he can also do pick and pop coz he can shoot from the outside.
What was he doing in Memphis again?? Right couldn't get out of the first round. He fit the system. That is all. He wasn't top 10 player at any point during his time in the league.
@@chucktee8088 lol what? Where was Kobe before pau? That’s right blowing 3-1 lead against the suns and getting booted out the first round as well. Individually Kobe went out there and a did his thing no doubt but if you haven’t noticed he didn’t win any rings by himself
@@jonathanmayorga6760 and we got Pau getting swept 3 times in Memphis. It takes a team to win. He was a solid number 2 not some superstar player. Calm down with that.
@@chucktee8088 point being neither of them accomplished anything until they joined forces what’s hard to understand? And you just reiterated my other point that Kobe didn’t advance to the finals until the right pieces were put together so he actually had a team. He couldn’t do it by himself. No one is slandering the greatness of Kobe. I just said individually that dude ate the league up there’s no denying that. It’s not hard to RUclips Kobe saying he wouldn’t win those 2 rings without Gasol and he wants his number 16 retired next to his. And it’s not say he Gasol was this legendary guy, but why would the lakers make that move if they felt he wouldn’t have made a huge impact?
The disrespect to Lamar Odom
Pau was soooooo good.
Dude played so smart and hard
Gasol deserves this I’m happy for him
I use his left baseline spin when I go hoop
Pau announced his retirement from professional basketball last year. For a team to retire your jersey, you can't be an active player. I think the Lakers Org.'s timing is fine.
The thing is that league had a massive shift towards 2011-2015. More athletic players like Deandre Jordan, Blake Griffin, and Anthony Davis were coming along and as Pau aged, it was harder to keep up.
Pau was a center who had a great perimeter game, could shoot threes, and was an incredible passer! That's why the Lakers were so good. The triangle offense from Phil Jackson was amazing with the Lakers from 2007 to 2010.
Great player! He’s the Spanish Tim Duncan.
Pau was so fundamental, underrated. I prefer him over AD any day of the week.
he was great but not like AD..If AD is healthy Pau cant even sniff his socks
@@redconsciousness2090 see that's the thing, hes never healthy. I rather have a player like pau that plays then having a top 10 player that's ALWAYS HURT and don't play. No playing means no points no rebounds no blocks assist exc. exc.

pau literally took over in the finals when kobe was struggling.

Pau is the most accomplished European player ever! Dirk was nice but Pau had the biggest impact.
NBA-wise, Dirk is a step above tbh, but overall, adding international FIBA play, Gasol's career is more well-rounded so to speak. Two best European players ever retired, with Parker a close third. Jokic , Antentokounmpo and Doncic are already at that level too, tho.
The PER stat speaks for itself. Of course he wasn’t gonna have the shot blocking numbers because he played with Bynum and later Dwight.
Pau deserves it...that being said I can see why Max got booted from first take. At no point in time was Pau a top 5 player in the league.

Top 10 at his position all-time? Yeah I would probably agree.
The Lakers don’t win those titles without Pau Gasol . He’s one of four players with 20,000 points, 11,000 rebounds, 3,500 assist and 1,500 blocks, joining Kareem , Kevin Garnett, and Tim Duncan. Pau Gasol deserves this.
The reason Pau was forgotten was because of the rise of Lob City with the Clippers. DeAndre Jordan and Blake Griffin changed the 4 & 5 position from that 2012-2018 era. They were just so athletic.
It is wild because back then, we would have thought that DeAndre and Blake would have won championships and had higher accolades at this point of their careers, but Pau is getting his jersey retired by one of the most historic sports franchises.
That was pretty much their time when CP3 was around ... no CP they fell off the face of the planet .

2010 Lakers = 1st in WC, NBA Champs
In 2009 Pau led Lakers in Win Shares, WS/48, Offensive AND Defensive Win Shares, Offensive Rating, Rebounds and FG%.
In 2010 Pau again led the Lakers in Win Shares, WS/48, Offensive Win Shares, Offensive Rating, while also leading in Blocks, Box Plus Minus and PER.
Pau was also a much closer 1B to Kobe's 1A in the NBA Finals than Kobe was to Shaq during the Three-Peat.

If you are referring to his Memphis numbers then you forgot to mention the 3apg and 2bpg... The league was also signficantly slower paced and less efficient back then compared to now. Their high action screen n roll and 2 man give n go game vs the 09 magic was a force. Adding odom to that to make a trifecta was something of high skillset and IQ on court. They seemingly fouled DWIGHT out of that series and attacked him every inch of the way Per PJ and KOBES order of course why not...and pau HAD already earned the love of lakerland GOING at it with KG in 08. The level of continuity really PAVED the way for the future/modern era IMO....high action screen roll cutting screens for kobe to shoot an open 3. Or both doing an active 2 man give and go screen roll into the elbow AS pau would ask for a re-post so kobe could re-establish an iso. To just outright go to work in the post himself as a big. I feel like KG really brought a lot ouf ot PAU in 08 Same with kobe....they helped him realize that he deserved to be at that level play at that stage to prove himself. He was as finesse as he was fury in that post Not to mention his ability to move the ball and without it for his size Paired with KOB what a blessing for all ball heads to enjoy. Some of the plays pau would execute with odom as bigs really reminds me of the current play between BI and JONAS in NOR....were really in for something SPECIAL if they manage to keep that talent intact alongside zion.
