It took a while but Marc Gasol has arrived as a player in the NBA. His numbers this season are making this trade better and better for the Grizz. Its not the same deal anymore, Marc has brought balance to it with his developing skills.
Seems like we got a bunch of dumb "hype" analysts these days. I think e as a whole NBA has too much"hype" these days but I'll probably be looked at as an old head even though I'm only 31.
Best day of my young life when this happened. I was 10 years old and I remember being so happy when this trade went down cause I knew we had a shot now.
When I first heard the rumors for this trade I remember laughing and turning off the TV. I thought it was a miss print or something, b/c I couldn't believe any GM would be dumb enough to trade their best player, a Rookie of the Year, and a high IQ 7 footer who could catch, dribble, run, pass and THINK for Kwame Brown. Later that night when I got home and saw it actually went through I dropped the remote and screamed with excitement!
it wasn't necessarily a bad trade at the time. they needed a big man, and butler was on his last year of his contract. plus, without the trade, the lakers would've never had the miracle of obtaining gasol.
Nothing to do with Jerry West hooking LA up, because he retired from GM in 2007. And it isn't as lopsided as people think, as Lakers gave up Marc Gasol.
@@CraigMcGuinn In fact, Marc was dominating spanish league like no one before at that moment, much more than Pau ever did. That year he took the all time record for most player of the week in a season in spanish league that was holded at the time by the one an only Arvydas Sabonis and won season MVP playing in a bottom half team. He also had already won a world championship with spanish national team performing a defensive clinic at the final at only 18yo. Peolple who had seen him play knew he would become a terrific player. Most americans don't know how many great players have come out of spanish league and how hard is for young players to shine there. People like Porzingis, Doncic, Calderón, Ibaka, Domantas Sabonis, etc. started their carreers there and only Doncic came close to the individual impact of Marc Gasol.
I also wanna say that trading Javaris and Mark could haunt LAL down the line. Two very talented guys. But as said before, LAL wanna win now. And I think they will. I'm guessing three titles the next five years.
@Conduit Memphis got a bigger tougher version of Pau with less offensive skills yes, but only makes 3.4M this coming season. For a small market team, thats a steal
Dear Hater, You're right about one thing....I was calling for Mitch's head. He was overdue for putting the right pieces around Kobe. In my opinion, he has redeemed himself by landing Gasol. Better late than never. Sincerely, Moron(with a championship in 08)
@MISAMEscobar lets ignore the 3 finals (2 championships) they couldn't have won without Pau. This idea Marc Gasol is better skill-wise at this point than Pau is still not true. Pau still averages more points, more rebounds, more assists and shoots from a further range. And Lakers have a better record than Memphis so its not like pau's padding his stats.
@Y2JTO well thats true, but hes starting to show that he can shoot the ball alittle more efficently. Hes hitting threes alittle better, hes hitting his free throws. give him alittle more playing time and he will get better
firstly, alston was on the magic not the rockets when they took the lakers to 7. yao was not present for 3 games. battier and artest were there but they relied heavily on 2nd year-3rd year guys to carry the load. battier was a defensive presence so they only had about 2 lethal offensive weapons (artest and a 3 year guard, first year starting guard aaron brooks).
Pierce was deservedly honored as the finals MVP, but if Pierce was all the Lakers had to worry about, there would have been a championship parade in Los Angeles. (Look at PP's shooting and scoring totals in Game 5 and 6.) Indeed, the real difference in the series was the Lakers' inability to combat the speed, quickness and decision-making of Rajon Rondo. ------------------------------------------- Wow. But what about his lack of experience.
@Zeke4TV the reason that small market teams dont land the big stars in trades is simple. Small market teams dont have scrub players making 9 mil a year that they can offer teams as an expiring contract and they wont give up salary cap or their core players to get somebody else. Look at OKC Thunder, i live outside OKC by the way. They didnt try to get any big free ageents when they had a lot of cap room b/c they knew they had to resign durant and now westbrook next year.
This is the only trade that I felt truly benefitted both teams, Marc Gasol will be a HOFer like this older brother soon and the Grizzlies were title contenders through the 2010s because of this trade. And of course, the lakers got two more titles.
Haha, hell yeah! I mean, they gave up a complete bust in kwame (Oh how happy I was when I saw that), Critter, a couple draft picks they don't really need, and amongst other stuff. This was an absolute steal! And hey! This trade, in my opinion, was what brought the title back to Los Angeles! Go Lakers!
this trade i think is very underrated you consider thee fact that memphis is restarting trying to get salary cap space and the lakers on the other hand wanted to win NOW to keep kobe happy.and to me the x factor of this trade is Marc Gasol who will soon be very good.So all i am trying to say is when ever i hear this trade i hear that memphis got ripped of. NO! they did not want talent they just wanted salary cap and expiriering contracts.
The NBA and its owners/players/GM’s were all pissed off about this trade and basically forced Stern’s hand in 2011 to veto the Chris Paul trade because they did not want a repeat of this trade.
the refs didnt make aaron brooks drop 30 in game 6, the hawks only show up on their home court... the pistons were the same in only showing up every now and again... The Rockets just play hard every game
Those writers don't have to make "excuses" for the lakers because guys like you will do that for them. Keep fighting the "good" fight Lloydx4 and enjoy your summer.
What we learned in the NBA Finals by Charley Rosen But the biggest lesson to be learned from the series is actually the reprise of an old one: Defense wins championships. It's a lesson that too many players, coaches and general managers still haven't grasped. That's because offense is more glamorous, more easily appreciated by both advertisers and casual fans, more financially rewarding to all participants, more ego satisfying and much easier to play and coach.
The reason they picked the lakers was because of their home record and offense. They forgot about the Hawks series after they beat the Pistons in 6 right before the finals.
@Teb0w15 well actually Gasol wanted out too, and the Grizzlies saved 49 millions of dollars!!! 49!!!. so thats why they did it. they were be able to save a lot of money.... and look them now. in the future it actually helped them out. they were in a rebuilding mode
I remember them talking about about Pao and Odom's being absolute NO-SHOWS for long periods during the game. Please don't talk about Superstars when comparing Phil and Doc. Doc had NOTHING to work with until last season. Phil had Shaq and Kobe during the Lakers run. He had Jordan and Pippen during the Bulls run. To have such high accomplishments and be outcoached by Doc Rivers is the ultimate CHOKE job.
@GreatkingAlexander they werent going anywhere with pau and didnt want to pay him that much money. They are rebuilding, but i think giving Gay that much money was kinda crazy, but not as crazy as how much ATL gave Joe Johnson.
Memphis is strange. Mayo, Gay, Randolf, and now Gasol all can be all star worthy, and yet they're still an average team. The new Gasol is going to be great if not even greater than Pau. Pau's main help is that he's more experienced and has Phil Jackson as a coach. If Marc can work himself to do better, he'll be great.
this is so nice man other 29 teams should just quit kobe best player in the world pau gasol bomb ass player lamor odom versital scorer big man andrew bynum good bench and greatest coach ever phil jackson please
This trade was great for both. For lakers you got a great center/power forward. For memphis you lower the salary meaning in the future you are able to afford someone else. They got a first round pick and they got marc. Look at them now. They are in the semI finals for west.
Jack McCallum > INSIDE THE NBA Lakers have issues to address There are almost as many reasons to flash caution flags about the 2008-09 Lakers as there are to start sewing championship banners. Let's begin with the obvious -- the way they played Tuesday night against the Celtics. Yes, it is extremely tough to win two elimination games in a row, particularly after flying cross-country to play the second in enemy territory. But tough shouldn't add up to mailing it in.
Let's also not forget about the "Zen Master's" finals experience. He should've out-coached Doc instead of the other way around. So stop with that weak argument.
wat the hell are you talking about? Teams made trade because they want to, nobody force them to do anything, and did you say the Celtics get Garnett for nothing? They GAVE UP 7 young talented player and some draft pick, for god sake.
