well done, if my memory serves me correctly the K series engine was notoriously bad for gaskets, there was a recall at Rover for these engines. The reason why is did not start was the primer hand pump needs to be pumped around 30 times, I used to give it to the junior soldier in my section to do. When did it myself I used a broom handle lots of zip ties and used the edge of the engine bay as a fulcrum and pumped it that way, far easier, you need to warm the plugs prior to turning over even on a hot day. For the turbo, let it sit for 30 seconds before moving, at idle, then when you park up let it sit for a minute, it enables the oil to get round and settle, if you look at the engine, some had a ancillary bracket fitted for another alternator, its for a 90 amp alternator to charge a secondary circuit on the vehicle, its a good investment, on the water pump, put a screwdiver on it when running, and your forehead on the screwdriver, you should feel the water pump, if its continuous its fine, if its pulsey/or going to beat that's a sign its on its way out, these water pumps are really bad. The second problem child is the thermostat, its an old wax style thermostat these go all the time, and your engine can get to temperature too quick and overheat leading to the gasket issue. The new version of the engine is now built by BMW and they have solved the problems, if it has sat for a while I would consider draining the fuel tank, and doing an inspection, condensate build up is notoriously bad as well, its not a lemon, just not maintained by its previous owner, these were a full time job in the army, and you have bought a lovely vehicle and you will soon fall in love with it,
Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to share some of your wisdom. Your kind support is greatly appreciated. Im hoping to address all those issues you mentioned in the coming video and upgrade a few parts too like the alternator. It's an ugly child at the moment but I am falling in love with it the more I work on it and get my hands dirty. Keep watching and sharing your advice, its hugely welcomed 😃🙌
Shame it's a 200tdi Disco engine in the vehicle! K series is a petrol too.
@@overlandready thanks
@@overlandready I agree, but if it was a 200TDI Defender it would have been £1000-£2000 more expensive.
@ I think you missed my point, the K series is a Freelander petrol engine... The vehicle has a common conversion to a D1/RRC 200tdi version of the Gemini engines. I think the simple reason for the D1 engine conversion is they are more plentiful and thus cheaper to source, maybe £1000 more in total to do the conversion as 200tdi Def hold their money fairly well, but they don't need specialist exhausts and a faff of inlet workings...
I have a gen Def 200tdi here at the moment for a rebuild, but it's not on the most important jobs list... nice engine, just a little noisy for my liking.
I still proper a proper 300tdi. 🙂 quieter, smoother and generally nicer all round.
@6:20 as you struggle with the old starter, you say something very prophetic about Land Rovers. "This definitely isn't meant to come out easily". Keep that in mind from now on!
I am trying so hard not to reply with 'thats what she said". 🤐. Haha thank you so much for watching and leaving a comment. I think you are right, I am in for a battle 🫣 but hopefully it will be entertaining to watch 😃
It's nothing to do with Landrover. It's because it's a Discovery 200TDI in a Defender - it was never designed for that engine bay.
Congratulations on getting it running, looking forward to seeing its rebuild. ✌️
Thanks for your support buddy, lots more to come 🙌😃
The sound you hear from the back of the engine near the exhaust is probably the exhaust manifold warped, quite a known issue, it will need a straight edge putting across it to check. If it's warped you'll need to get the face where it fastens to the head skimmed so it's flat again. Once done you'll need new manifold gaskets to reassemble 👍
Hey thanks for the advice, I will check that out. Thanks again so much for watching and taking the time to leave a comment 😃🙌
Watching this for inspiration. I've had a Series2 SWB with deisel Disco engine, sat in my parking area for 25 years as I got pissed off with simple bits breaking and I needed it for work. I tried selling it for £1500 just a few years back, and a tyre-kicker turned up FOUR times with his dad or a mate before offering me £1k straight. Told him to fk off. Now roads are so bloody bad and I've retired, I'm going to work it back to roadworthy and bulletproof, as my current little runaround is getting shaken to bits.
Hey thanks so much for watching. It's great to hear that my videos are giving you some new motivation to pick back up where you left off. It's always fun once you get going. You might regret the motivation once all the parts bill start coming though lol. Keep me posted on how you get on. 😃🙌
It's great to see the old Landy receiving the love it deserves to stay on the road.
She is gonna need a lot of love.....just like the wife, but she will be saved and back on the road soon💪. Thanks so much for watching 😀
@@InDadsGarage My wife hates mine lol she askes if im spending the weekend with her or Trevor (the defender).
Cracking volg and great to see that the engine bay is now spotless and we are seeing progress. Keep sharing buddy.
Thank you so much for the support and kind comments. Lots more to come 😃🙌.
Can't wait for next video been liking the defender content 🙂
Thanks so much for watching and supporting 💪. So pleased you’re enjoying it 😃
Well done lad....... A running vehicle makes it all the better. Happy for you.😊
Thanks for your support mate 😃. Now we can crack on with the restoration 💪
word of advice; as soon as it runs sell it
Haha, you sound like my wife 😂. I'm gonna see how much further down the rabbit hole I can go. Thanks so much for watching 😃
Hes right, sell it run away.
Haha 😂, you guy are scaring me now
@@InDadsGarage no, just been there. Go buy a finished one and enjoy it they are great vehicles but you’ll spend forever sorting that.
Don’t be scared ignore the negative comments and keep going with what you’re doing, that will end up a top job and you will end up with something to be proud of!
If these guys have been there and done this properly then they should know better then to sh*t on peoples dreams!
Doubt it's the head gasket, check if there is water in the oil or oil in the water, could be exhaust manifold gasket
I got mine about 2019 for 2600 with 12months mot. Think I got lucky, keep the videos coming!
Sounds like a bargain if the chassis was good 🙌. Thanks so much for watching and supporting the channel 😃
Enjoyed watching this mate , it makes my decision never to buy another Landrover the right decision ..My Landcruiser 4.2 will see any 4x4 off road & towing needs sorted for the remainder of my lifetime …the bloody money I’ve spent / wasted on Landrovers leaves me cold ! …subscribed 👍😂
Haha this makes me feel like I definitely made the right decision buying it 😂. Thank you so much for your support....Legend 🙌
Great video, It's good that you got it started and running. I'm sure there's plenty more to do 😜
Thanks for watching dude. LOT’S more to do but a early win 🙌 so I’ll take it lol 😃
Nice job getting it running, sweet!!
Thanks dude, a small victory 🤓👌. Just need to restore it now lol
may the rust gods be in your favour
😂🤞
Awesome to see it running👍🏻
Thanks for watching dude, there is life in the old girl yet 😃
Timing cover and rear main seal, all doable once out. Simple engines with bags of torque but do not sparkle so great for laneing.
Hey thanks for watching and leaving a comment, hopefully the engine will be buggered and then I can put a V8 in it 😆
This defender should have the 300TDI engine in , one of the best one's ever fitted. They very rarely go wrong
Mind you Looking at where the water pump is fitted it's 200TDI, which wasn't bullet proof like the 300, but still a reasonable engine. I'm a retired mechanic and worked on Land Rovers since the beginning of my trade, even on Series 1 's
Well done on getting it running. 😊
I had cylinder 4 leak before on an early 200 TDI I had. It often goes between the cylinder and push rod hole.
Thankfully they’re super easy to do on the TDI engines 😃
Thanks for watching ands supporting dude. I'm gonna get my hands dirty soon and tackle the gasket I think. I'm pretty sure it's the gasket and not the exhaust. I hope it goes as easy as your experience lol. RUclips will soon find out anyway lol
@ amazing! Keep pushing 💪🏻 great videos, they’re doing fantastically, well deserved! 😃
Been looking forward to this update 👍. Well done getting it running, different engine to mine but still looks familiar under the bonnet 😅
Thanks for tuning in again dude. It's a 200tdi from a Discovery apparently. Getting to know my way around it and all the part numbers for literally everything that need replacing lol. Big engine referb video coming soon 🤓 🙌
I'm pleased you can this time identify what is the starter motor and what is the alternator. You had me worried for a while there in the last video.
Haha, we all get there in the end. Thanks again for watching 😃🙌
Well if you don't have enough spanners when you start you will have before you finish
Keeps vids coming mate. Great little channel. Don’t listen to the negative comments. Get it up together and keep it!
I can see her looking lovely back to the original red colour later on!
I have a 59 reg 110. And there’s drips everywhere outside. I’m banned from the driveway 🤭
Hey thanks so much for the support and kind words 😃. 95% of comments are amazing but you always get the odd one that knows better 😂 . Lots more videos to come as the work progresses. Haha so its safe to say I can't expect a leak free lany the its all done then 😆
My defender 200tdi is 35 years old run just fine also had to change the starter motor check out all things defender
Hey thanks for watching and leaving a comments. I will check them out. Great to hear your Defender is running strong. Hopefully I will get another one back on the road soon that will last another 35 years 🤓👌
Sounded like a injector seal leak to start with but certainly looks like a head gasket failure, fairly easy job on a TDI though.
Worth getting the head skimmmed if needed and get the injector seats refinished at the same time .
I've had a few TDIs and the head gaskets have failed on them all and the heads havenever had any warping , they are prone to cracking though so worth getting pressure tested.
Have fun .
Hey thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment. This is really helpful to know, I think a new head gasket will be on the cards for an upcoming video soon. Even if its just for the learning experience 😃👌
Sounds like you’ve got a leaky injector. Top video, once again!
Good thinking, I am pretty sure it's the head gasket but that's also worth checking as it's an easier fix 😃. Thanks for watching dude
@@InDadsGarageor you've bought a landrover with a steam engine? Haha
1:05 😂 p diddlein with baby oil lmao
Congrats mate well done
Thanks buddy, really appreciate the support 😃🙌. Challenge one.....complete! lol
Get used to putting new parts on your 110 lol😊
By the time it's finished I think everything will be a new part at this rate haha. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to leave a comment 😃🙌
Good work fella. It would be good to see that engine out. Are you taking the body off the chassis which might give you a chance to tackle everything including running gear.
Thanks buddy, yeah the engine will 100% be coming out in a future video. I can't stand the fact it's Sooooo dirty lol. I will be fitting a new chassis so it will all come off and then I can give it a good seeing to!! Thanks so much for your support, its hugely appreciated 😃🙌
I think it’s an awesome and interesting project, I can’t wait to see the journey of this. Im so glad I stumbled upon your channel.
Hi thats is great to hear, I am so pleased you are enjoying the content. Thank you so much for the support and kind comment 😃🙌
8:00 It’s a tdi you don’t have an electric fuel pump, you will never hear a fuel pump when you turn the ignition on.
Only have a lift pump that runs off a crank lobe, and the injection pump that runs off the timing belt.
Well that explains it then lol. Thanks for the info, I'm so used to working on Audi's and hearing the prime when I open the door. Back to basics with this, which is great 🤓. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment 🙌
would love to get my hands on this to fix it
At least someone else can see the potential 😜🙌 Top Man, thanks for watching dude
@InDadsGarage I've built 3 of these from bare chassis it's all good fun those 200 TDI starters are a pain to get out too
good job mate. Please wear safety specs when under the car. I got a rust particle in my eye once which had to be dug out by an opthamolagist. not pleasant.
Me too. Used a magnet ;)
Hey thanks so much watching and leaving a comment. OMG that sounds horrendous! I try my best to wear PPE but often forget. You are 100% right though, the underneath is full of dripping fluids and crusty metal. I'll be sure to kit up properly in the coming videos 😎. Thanks again for your kind support😃🙌
Doesn’t need head gasket, just exhaust manifold gasket sorting 😂
Get this man a lift and some overalls 😂
😂
Head gasket gone at the back of the engine gets my vote 100%
You are the first person to 100% agree with my diagnosis. Thanks so much for watching, stay tuned for the upcoming episodes to see if we are both right 😉
We had a land rover defender X reg and a Vauxhall Cavalier 52 plate that covered a rural area , guess what car was frequently of the road for repairs , the land rover
But which one put a bigger smile on your face, that is the question? Thanks so much for watching and leaving a comments 😃 really appreciate your support 🙌
@ haha
Got a new starter recently for my “opel” motor. Not common in US.
03:15 it’s cleaner than it was before , but I wouldn’t call that spotless.
Clean enough to ear my breakfast off it at least 😜. Haha thanks for watching 🙌
Great video! But that frame rate feels like stop go animation… nice work on this beast, good luck
Hey thanks for watching and supporting. Im still testing different cameras and other bits and bobs so will hopefully iron out that in the coming videos. Really appreciate the feedback though as I want the quality to be the best it can be for you guys since you are investing your time in watching the video 😃
I watched a video of a fellow labouring away on a Land Rover nut somewhere. It was reverse thread! Not lefty-loosey, righty-tighty. Beware!
Thats basically all my mechanical knowledge screwed right there 👨🔧😬
The wire that that goes to the injection pump turns the fuel flow off and stops the engine
Hey thanks for watching and leaving a comment. Yeah I think that was a key issue right there, no power to the pump. Such simple little wires on the engine, I love it! 🤣
Please dont die we want more vids❤
Haha I will try me best not to 😂. Lots more content to come. Thanks so much for watching and your kind support 😃
It’s a landie if you don’t have an oil leak you have run out of oil.
Literally the best advice I have had so far 😂🙌. Thanks for watching buddy
Nice one mate, like n sub.
Amazing thanks dude, really appreciate the support and taking the time to comment...Legend 🙌
Hopefully someone on the estate doesn't start a petition because you've soiled the stretch of pristine block paving.
Haha this is going to be a real life concern now I have become a Land Rover owner. It’s going to be like a breadcrumb trail back to my house 🫣. Thanks again for watching 😃🙌
It's not leaking oil, it's marking it's territory. good to see the tractor is running though.
Well said, I would prefer it did it on the grass like the dog though! haha thanks for watching and leaving a comment. 😃🙌
@InDadsGarage Landrovers have a little place in my heart....or I'm a glutton for punishment, I've played with these beasts a good portion of my life from the old series 3 right up to the Wolf series. As you will find they are a love hate relationship............You'll love to hate it 😁😁😁
Your neighbours must love you!?!
Well they used to..... will see how our relationship developed over the series 😬. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment 😃🙌
OK, your spurious wire was on the OIL PRESSURE SWICH, not the fuel pump. as the connection there is actually on the fuel pump! From the last video exerpt, starter was possible ok, battery was definitely flat.
Fuel pump is totally mechanical, so you won't hear one...
Definitely head gasket failure, in the usual place too, off and on in a day.
No learn about them before going any further... fix things like the electrics as somethings are not working as they should, and maybe invest in a 110 roof and sides and sell the 90 parts. Make it look better.
Also probably not good to let the parts wash go into the drive/soil/watercourse as it's not nice stuff and kills fish... The wife would be the least of your worries if EA traces anything back to you.
Hey thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comments with advice and words of wisdom. Sounds like you know your stuff. Please keep the comments and advice coming. Heaven knows I need it 🤓 🙌
That’s not the original engine mate, that’s a 200tdi from a discovery which was a common conversion. The head gaskets are prone to go on the rear but it’s not that common. I’ve owned my 200tdi defender for 25 years now and it’s covered 325,000 miles and I’ve done the head gasket once!
Stay away from parts which comes in blue box’s and you’ll be fine!!
Thanks so much for watching and leaving a comment. Wow thats some millage, but great to hear they will run that long with proper maintenance. Hopefully after a new head gasket, proper service and maintenance I can get many good years out of it. Tax and MOT exempt soon swell which will be a bonus.
@ yes, I’ve seen all the experts commenting about how bad they are and you need to get shot of it.. in all honesty, it will cost you money as it’s an old landy and from the looks of it it’s not been that well cared for.
But if you Keep them clean and the chassis and bulkhead protected and drive them like a Land Rover should be driven and they will last a lifetime… and use good quality parts is a must!
If it comes up for sale let me know fella
You might change your mind when you see all the sketchy DIY mechanics as the series progresses lol 😂. Thanks so much for watching and leaving a comment.
I like a challenge That’ll be a good thing Wes done 👍
That leak could be from the exhaust manifold gasket, fairly common on 200/300 tdi engines
It’s probably leaking from there too. I’m pretty sure it’s the head gasket. I’m filming the replacement of it tomorrow, so it’s getting one regardless now 😂. Thanks for following buddy. Please keep the comments and suggestions coming. Help a novice out 🙌
@ look forward to seeing it! Welcome to LR ownership, Sometimes I think a drug addiction would be cheaper!
Thanks mate, well hopefully it’s a healthy addiction, maybe not for the mental heath though lol Time will tell 🤣
@@InDadsGarageonly use the genuine parts manifold gasket the aluminium looking ones just blow even sooner , the aftermarket head gaskets are ok though , even the Britpart ones , just check the copper washers with a magnet to make sure they're copper.
However bad this Lanny may or may not be it's still 1000x better than it's present day counterparts. Engine still running after 35 years and today's versions barely survive their initial warranty. Yes it was by no means perfect but at least you can work on it yourself (though difficult) without having to dismantle half of the engine bay first.
Totally agree with this. Having recently taken a modern Audi V8 apart, this is a dream. All be it a very rusty dream 🤣. Thanks so much for watching and leaving a comment. Lots more videos to come on my progress 😃🙌
And yet in Germany you cannot even wash your car bodywork at home.
They don't allow plain soapy water into the sewer system let alone engine decreasing fluid.
Wow, what is the world coming to lol. Don't worry, I disposed of that fluid correclty 🤓. Well the stuff that collected in the buckets anyway 💁♂️. Thanks for watching an leaving a comment 🙌
It’s a 110 not a defender, defenders started being made in 1990, yours is 1989…..
Also the wrong engine as that would have been a 19j 2.5td originally
I think you are spot on in both account there 👌. Thanks for watching
There is no such thing as a cheap landrover, if you buy it cheap it will cost you as much or maybe more than a good one to put right … trust me I have restored a fair few series, light weights and defenders with new galvanised chassis, if this is just for content then knock yourself out, I just hope you have deep pockets and a lot of time ❤
Are you going to weld the chasis repair
Full new chassis and bulk head is on the cards for this restoration project I think buddy. I will be attempting some welding at somepoint in this series hopefully. The chassis is too far gone and fill of bodge repairs. Thanks so much for watching and leaving a comment 🙌
New sub, cool car cool video
Hey thanks so much of watching and supporting the channel, you legend 😃🙌. Lots more content to come.
just saw a "non Running" defender and the fool on fleabay wanted £12,000 for it with it needing a new engine lol
It wasn’t my advert you were looking at was it 😜. Haha thanks so much for watching 😃🙌
Om606 engine swap it mate , 300hp . All parts are available as bolt on swap
Ohhh this sounds interesting mate, I'll look in to this 🤓👌. Thanks so much for watching and leaving a comments.
Great vid mate, loving the land rover content. Can always sell the Audi to get her running properly 😂. Now she's fired up you need the full on 4x4 Barbour wax ... and double barrel shotgun.
Full chassis swap imo, id also awap the rear cab to a 90 cab so it looks more like the landie in james bond spectre.
Thanks dude, I might need to sell one Audi once it’s fully fixed. The wife isn’t happy about me having 3 cars 🙄. Haha Barbour and Land Rover go hand in hand I guess. I’ll have to update my wardrobe 🙌. Thanks for watching
This is not a truck, just off-road vehicle. Truck is Scania or DAF.
Fair enough, point taken 😃. Thanks so much for watching 🙌
it's a 110 (pre defender) i have a F plated one
The problem is it is discovery 200 tdi the turbo is under the inlet and cooked the starter motor in the defender the turbo was on top you need to put sum heat proofing around the starter for protection
I did wonder about how close these two were together!!! There’s a great shout, I will defo put some kind of heat shield there now or a turbo blanket. Great advice 🙌. Thanks so much for watching
Bet your neighbours love you !
It's a love, hate relationship at the moment lol. Thanks for watching 😃🙌
Make sure you check the chassis for rot before spending too much time and effort on the engine now!
Hey thanks for watching and leaving a comment. I think I have decided on a new chassis anyway so I am gonna go full send on this restoration. The current chassis is made from polostyreen lol. 😂
@ check the bulkhead too! You may need to do some work on that or replace when swapping out the chassis
Sounds like an injector leaking. Not worked on those engines but guessing it’s just a crush washer.
Thanks for watching buddy, I will check that out. I think I need to service the injectors anyway to be on the safe side. 👌
Creased at the ‘saxamaphone’
Haha thanks for watching dude 🙌
You wont believe me but fact that here in Indonesia, any models defender would easily cost 50k usd (prod 91-97) up to 150k latest prod 2012-2016.
WOW.... maybe I need to import mine to Indonesia when it's finished and sell it there 🤣. Thank you so much for watching and leaving a comment 😃🙌
Same in South America, around 30k for a Defender 300 tdi in average condition up to 100 k for a limited edition in mint condition. The reason the prices skyrocket is that 3rd world countries usually have way higher taxes on imported goods, so in order to pay lower taxes for classic vehicles you sell it at a pre arranged extremely low price ( just on paper ) then when the vehicles reach its destination on 3rd world the 60 up to 90% taxes applied to the vehicle + the transportation won’t kill your profits as you pre arranged your profits previously outside the country of destination.
Keep going they are shit but soo good! My 84 landrover 90 hardly gives me and trouble and if it does normally fixable with a hammer!!
Haha thanks mate. really appreciate the support. I might invest in a new hammer just for this project 😂
She lives! Just about anyway... Remember to top up oil before any job, even changing the starter!
It’s Alive!!!! Full engine overhaul coming soon including fresh oil, obviously. I’m all about the fresh oil 😂. Thank again for watching buddy 💪
Don’t you mean NON RUNNER in the header?
Known runner perhaps?!
Sounds like a manifold leak
ULmachine oil, stafford solvent , propane
I bet your neighbours love you

Can't you spell non?
Non...
NEVER pressure spray an engine. You force water past o-rings! Did you cover the alternator? 🙈😵💫🤷♂️🤔🙅♂️
Hints: 1. Buy overalls. 2. Drive/jack the LR up onto spare wheels or bricks and chock a wheel.
It's an ode knackered 300tdi. They can run under water if needs be. Bit of jet spray ain't going to do nothing. I do mine all the time, it's fine.
None...........
its non, actually but good try 😜
@@InDadsGarage Yes you nearly managed it, maybe a few English classes instead of English glasses
Why why would you buy a land rover sorry waste of time and money really not even worth washing any way it's ALL yours

Well my neighbors of course 💁♂️. Thanks so much for watching and leaving a comment 🙌
You have a 300tdi not a 200tdi
Is it’s? How can you tell? Help!!
At a glance 200tdi has 2 fanbelts. 300tdi has one multiv belt which goes round everythiong. 200tdi belts are a swine to adjust!! My 200tdi blew the headgasket at the rear like yours has.Only once in 15 years of ownership. I have rebuilt several series landrovers and found Paddock spares very good but be cautious of parts in blue boxes some are ok some not.
dosnt wonna get his finger's dirty 🤣🤣🤣what's wrong with you ya girl.
